Foley’s

F amilyT ree

Last year, when actor and Hidden Hills resident Scott Foley was asked to participate in the Lisa Kudrow produced TLC network genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are, he guessed there was nothing noteworthy in his family heritage or anything even traceable.

“All I really knew is that on my father’s paternal side of the family, we immigrated from Ireland a couple of generations ago,” says Foley,

who currently stars on ABC’s Scandal. “I was sure they were going to do a little digging and then come back and say, ‘You come from a potato farmer in Ireland. Thank you very much. Now go away.’”

So imagine Foley’s surprise when, shortly after his initial interview with WDYTYA researchers, he received an excited call from the producers: “You won’t believe what we found!” they said.

“It’s just amazing!”

HIDDENHISTORY

Foley, who had spent part of his childhood in Japan and Australia due to the career demands of his banker father Hugh, had an inkling that his family history was not a complete blank page. Through vague family word of mouth he’d sometimes heard that his father’s maternal roots might run deep in America, even back to the Revolutionary War. Among the sparse information he had given the show’s researchers was his grandmother’s maiden name— Wadsworth—though Foley wasn’t even sure if that was correct. “The Revolutionary War connection was sort of a family tale,” says Scott.

“But we had no facts to back it up. I just assumed that there would be nothing there.” Could this be the

family line the show’s producers had traced and were referring to when they spoke of a fascinating discovery? Scott really had no idea. And, at first, WDYTYA wouldn’t tell. Scott was eager to find out.

“Because I grew up traveling around, I never really had the foundation most people have,” says Scott, who is married to actress Marika Dominczyk (with whom he has three young children). “For that reason, it was important for me to know a little bit about my history and background. There was this sort of hole, which I sort of glossed over saying, ‘Oh, it doesn’t matter,’ and I’d rush on to the next subject. More importantly, I’m also a father now and I wanted to be able to share something with my children about their family background.”

The entertaining impact of Who Do You Think You Are comes from watching each episode’s subject in the act of discovery, so instead of revealing what it had found, the show flew Scott to Washington, D.C. and the headquarters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a national organization requiring direct lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution for its

membership. There, Scott met with genealogist Kyle Betit, who had dug into records and compiled a family tree for Scott. And there it was, not the name “Wadsworth”, but rather Simon Wardwell, Scott’s five times great-grandfather and a recognized Patriot in America’s Revolutionary War.

But how was Scott’s ancestor-born in 1752--associated with the Revolutionary War? Simon Wardwell’s pension file revealed that he enlisted as a private for a term of eight months in the American army in 1776, serving honorably. When Wardwell’s term ended, he re-enlisted, whereupon he was given a prestigious and important appointment. It was as one of General George Washington’s “Life Guard,” an elite unit not unlike the Secret Service of today, whose mission was to protect the future first president of the United States. “I was blown away,” says Scott of the discovery. “It was amazing!”

Anxious to learn more, Scott and a camera crew then flew to Cambridge, Massachusetts and to Gen. George Washington’s Revolutionary War headquarters, The Longfellow House. “I was able to stand on the same steps as my five times great grandfather Simon Wardwell,” says Scott. “I walked on the same floors and roamed around the property where he would have been. They told me that Simon would have been at the first reading of the Declaration of Independence. Not just there, but standing up with Washington, possibly at his side. For me, someone who didn’t have a large family, it was surprisingly emotional. I can’t really say why. Just the fact that I had family here

in the U.S. so long ago that were a part of something as interesting and important as this.”

Now that the Wardwell lineage had been confirmed, Scott was curious to know how far his family’s roots went back in America and what else could be known about them. To this end, he traveled to the New England Historic Genealogical Society to do some more digging. At the NEHGS in Boston, Scott met with historian Mary Beth Norton, who presented him with a large

family tree, where it is shown that the first Wardwell in America was his nine times great-grandfather, Thomas Wardwell, born in England in 1603. Little is known about Thomas, but his son, Samuel is a name known in American annals, as one of nineteen people to be hanged as a witch during part of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692.

“I was absolutely shocked,” says Scott. “I’m almost 44 years old, and to spend my entire life not knowing

As described on the show by historian Margo Burns of “The Witch House” in Salem, Massachusetts, the witch crisis started when two young girls from Salem began suffering from bizarre fits. Soon a local doctor declared they were under the influence of evil. This sparked great fear and hysteria; accusations of witchcraft exploded. The mainly Puritan community felt God was punishing them and sought to reaffirm their religious beliefs by going after those they believed in league with the devil. They aggressively pursued anyone accused, including Samuel Wardwell.

Though Samuel Wardwell denied the allegations against him, he was tried and convicted. On

September 22, 1692, along with seven female “witches,” Scott’s ancestor was taken to the outskirts of Salem and hanged in front of a large crowd.

“It is so sad,” says Scott. “My daughter was a witch for Halloween last year and we thought it was cute, but Samuel’s death was a terrible tragedy. Samuel was the father of eight children. I’m a father. So that’s the connection I feel the most. At the same time, I understand that this was 300 years ago. It’s such an interesting story. Something I’m fascinated to be a part of. There have been many books written about it. Someone told me that one of the characters in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible is based on Samuel Wardwell. For

me, being an actor, knowing that such a seminal play is based on one of my ancestors is pretty cool.” Scott says his experience researching his ancestry was both exciting and rewarding and, ultimately, “a really big deal for me,” something he is thrilled to be able to share with his own three children. “I told my kids everything,” he says. “Of course, my eldest is six so what they understood is practically nothing. But I’m excited for them to get to the age where

they can appreciate what this is a part of their family and to get to the point in school where they are learning about these moments in history. To be able to directly connect to it and to me. That will be wonderful.”

QUIET ON THE

SET!

Though Marc and Anne Kolbe work in one of the entertainment industry’s most dynamic sectors, their family embraces Hidden Hills’ simple, timeless charms.

Throughout the history of Hollywood, well-written motion pictures and television shows have had the power to transport their viewers to another place and time. The visual effects arm of the industry, born in the late 80’s and coming of age in this decade, subtly yet exponentially enhances the viewers’ ability to travel through time.

The irony of this paradox is not lost on Marc and Anne Kolbe. They both got in to the visual effects industry on the ground floor in the 1990s, yet adhere to the values and freedom they enjoyed in their childhoods when they are not at work. He is the founder of Kolbeco, a visual effects production company. She is Senior Vice President of Visual Effects at Warner Brothers, where she is in charge of visual effects for the studio’s feature film division.

“In the early days, [visual effects] was just a few shots here or there, or something done to just enhance a shot,” Marc muses. “Today, visual effects are critical components of the film. A third of a film’s budget will be dedicated to visual effects. We have more creative say in the production process and we play a much larger role in the finished product. It has been an incredible ride just watching this field grow in front of us and not just on a technology level.”

Anne recalls her career after graduation from UCLA as a series of entry-level and freelance positions in the entertainment industry that led her to the talent desk at Creative Artists Agency (CAA) (Might want to confirm this is the agency, pretty positive) and a family foundation in San Francisco. Ultimately, she returned

Photography by Anne Sherwood

to Los Angeles to work for Robert Greenberg & Associates (RGA), one of the pioneering companies of the visual effects industry, known back then for their innovative title sequences on films like Braveheart.

“This was an industry that was both growing and challenging,” she recalls. “That said, I found the challenges within this job really matched up well with my personality. I loved the constant flow of change, innovation, learning and adapting to different people, projects and environments.”

Today, like a well-written script-turnedproduction, the Kolbe’s home and community in Hidden Hills transport them into a world blissfully removed—and yet easily accessible—to the worlds they inhabit in their careers. The couple’s introduction back in the 90’s was a “meet cute” at a friend’s birthday party where most of the guests were employees of RGA. Though there was a lot of back-and-forth setting up dates, their personal and professional common ground formed the perfect foundation for a marriage still going strong.

According to the couple, their world beyond the set and studio has a nostalgic air reminiscent of their own childhoods, yet perfectly attuned to their 21st century careers and outdoorsy lifestyle. It includes sons Maxwell, 17, and William, 15, and daughter Lauren, 11, as well as horse Fred, pony Bowie, donkey Fanny, a couple of dogs and a cat.

“What I love about Hidden Hills is that the moment we walk through this gate, we are somewhere else, not at work, the city or Hollywood,” explains Marc, who is the son of director Winrich “Rick” Kolbe and godson of actor Dennis Weaver. “No matter what kind of day I have had, I suddenly become more relaxed once I cross over into this rural area with horse trails and parkland. You know that when the kids go out to meet up with neighbors or ride bikes, you don’t have to worry about them the way a parent would elsewhere.”

Although the Kolbes lived in other enclaves favored by “industry couples” in Santa Monica and the Palisades after marrying nearly two

decades ago, Anne fell in love with the area near where the Calabasas-bred Marc grew up. Hidden Hills reminded her of her own childhood community near Walnut Creek in the San Francisco Bay area, save for a golf course that ran through her back yard. Though it took time, patience and a little house flipping, they settled into their ranch-style home where the entire family connects and recharges on weekends.

“I wanted to give to my children what I had as a child…a lot of freedom, a lot of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and the ability to play until it is time to come in,” says Anne, who shares her passion for equestrian sports with Lauren, who in turn is doing her first horse shows.

“I did not want to raise my kids in the city, because this is not who I am. Owning horses is important to me, as I grew up riding and taking care of them. Sometimes you don’t know what you’re missing in your life until you fall back into it. By then, you’re so appreciative that you are able to find and embrace that part of yourself again, especially when you have kids.”

and I am 6’2”! We’re very proud of his achievements playing on his school’s varsity lacrosse team and in other sports. However, we really come together as a family at our summer vacation home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where we do pretty much anything—skiing, fishing, water skiing, salmon-fishing and so on.”

Anne also points out that Hidden Hills provided a supportive community during the early years of their family. When Marc was away on longer business trips and she was still building her career at Warner Brothers, she became close friends with other families who always were there to lend her a hand. She also remarks that beloved figures like Coach Tim Kenney (?need to confirm name?), football coach at Oak Park high school, as well as the father figure of the local summer day camp, provided her children

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HIDDEN HILLS IS THAT THE MOMENT WE WALK THROUGH THIS GATE, WE ARE SOMEWHERE ELSE, NOT AT WORK, THE CITY OR HOLLYWOOD

an extra layer of stability.

“There’s no question we love the outdoors,” concurs Marc. “As Max is into cars and motorcycles, we love to work on the dirt bikes and our racecar, and we enjoy racing together on a racetrack near our home. William is the sporty one and at 15, he’s already taller than me—

“It is true that it takes a village to raise kids and our community is a big part of why we raised our children here,” adds Anne. “Our best friends are primarily from Hidden Hills because our kids were best friends with their kids. We got along so well and it has become the foundation of our family and social life.”

Even though the Kolbe’s make the most of their spare time, they are not exactly riding off into the sunset in their professional lives just yet. In fact,

As someone who has dedicated her career to bringing buyers and sellers together I believe successful marketing is more than just about being online, it’s also about being there, in the community, engaging and understanding the needs and aspirations of the neighbors I represent. That’s why for nearly 15 years my team and I have been right there outside the Long Valley gate making that most important connection.

both Marc and Anne are at the peak of their respective careers. Marc’s resume includes the television series Last Ship as well as Cloud Atlas and Dream House, while Anne oversees a major aspect of Warner Brothers’ production activities. Two years ago, their professional paths crossed during the productions Where the Wild Things Are and Jupiter Ascending, though most of the time they both assert they like working in parallel orbits.

“It can get challenging when you are working on the same project and find yourself getting into heated discussions,” Marc points out, though Anne counters, “Because we are able to understand each other’s struggles, we can compartmentalize our work lives separately from our personal lives. However, when our jobs do blend together, we can empathize with one another. We also have a lot of friends in common in the businesses. I will be on a work call with Germany and the people on the other end will ask me to say hello to Marc for them.”

When visual affects are done properly, they create this wonderful effect of bringing a scenario into multiple dimensions in real time, seamlessly and very believably. The Kolbes could say they have maintained their own personal production in a similar, well thought out fashion. However, their good fortune is no special effect…it’s the real thing, accomplished with good communication and a firm grasp of timeless values that don’t change no matter what new technologies come their way.

Model Citizen

While making a career for herself in a sometimes harsh industry, donna feldman has kept herself grounded upon her hidden hills roots.

Summer 2016 | Hidden Hills Magazine 25

Over the last 15 years, model, actress and former Hidden Hills resident, Donna Feldman, has been featured on almost 100 magazine covers including Esquire and GQ, she’s traveled the world representing brands like Visa Black Card and Revlon, and she’s worked as a spokesmodel on the hit show Deal or No Deal, which starred another well known Hidden Hills resident, Howie Mandel. Donna has appeared on television and in film, both acting and hosting. Yet, there’s a lot more to her than what people see on the surface. Donna is down to earth and credits her ability to stay anchored to her loving family, her friends and her childhood experiences in Hidden Hills.

“Looking back, I don’t now how I could have survived the industry I’m in, had it not been for the upbringing and community I’ve had around me since childhood,” Donna explains. She has fond memories of riding her bike to Round Meadow school, running on the horse trails with her brother and golden retriever, selling home made potpourri to her neighbors and playing Marco Polo in the community center pool. She asks, “How fortunate am I to have grown up in a place where you can leave your front door unlocked and roam around freely on Halloween without feeling any sense of danger?” When her friends visit the community they tell her that with the white fences, beautiful trees, horses and fresh air, Hidden Hills seems like a movie set. When looking back on her childhood home Donna says, “I’m so appreciative for the environment and the experience.”

Donna’s parents, who have been married 42 years, still live inside the gates of Hidden Hills. She gets great life advice on her weekly visits with them. “They always told me that as long as you love what you’re doing and work hard at it, that you will be successful. They’ve also taught me to stay true to myself and at the end

26 Hidden Hills Magazine | Summer 2016

While Donna may have grown up in an idyllic and safe community, the same is not always true for the industry that now employs her. “I see it more than ever in the harsh business I’m in. When you’re being judged and critiqued for a living, it’s challenging to ever truly feel good enough,” Donna explains. When she first started modeling, one of the things she loved about it was that it gave her an opportunity to pretend to be something she didn’t feel like she was in real life—sexy and confident. In time, she came to realize that she already had those qualities inside her or she wouldn’t have been able to project them in front of the camera. “This was a turning point for me; a real eye opening experience that made me want to share this empowering message to other women. within yourself. Rather than focusing on your supposed flaws, love all the parts that make you unique and beautiful,” Donna says.

Her desire to empower other women was inspired by others who like Donna, have the brains to go with the beauty. Kathy Ireland, Cindy Crawford and Jessica Alba are a few of the successful businesswomen she looks up to. Now Donna is hoping to inspire women herself with a new blog called Secrets of a Model that will cater to women who want the inside tips and tricks of the modeling trade. “It’s something I’ve secretly wanted to do for quite some time now,” Donna says. “I’m excited to start this new venture that will hopefully help to inspire other women to feel beautiful and comfortable in their own skin.”

DRUM DOCTOR

When someone tells me that they are lucky to live where they live and to do what they love for a living, the cynical part of me waits for the ‘gotcha’ chuckle that negates the statement, but as I speak to longtime Hidden Hills resident, Ross Garfield a.k.a. the “Drum Doctor,” I believe him. I did not know that there is someone who supplies drums that enhance the sound of artists’ recordings. With over 400 drum kits in his shop, “Drum Doctors,” and an ear for the variety of sounds, Ross has a specialized skill set that helps recording projects achieve a sound that enriches their music. His drums are also used in many video shoots, television commercials and film sound tracks. Ross sets up, tunes up, and supplies drums to musicians like Paul McCartney,

He joined his first band at thirteen, played drums with several bands through high school and spent his first two years at college majoring in music. He was practicing one evening in his house when a man knocked on his door. He had been hiking on the trail behind Ross’ house and heard him playing. He was the manager for a reggae band and he asked Ross to audition for the band. Ross got the gig and spent the next five years touring with the band. They played four to five nights a week; touring from the Bay Area north to Vancouver, BC, opening for some name acts and headlining as well.

While Ross loves touring with the band, he decides he wants to settle down with his wife. In 1981, he takes his gift for tuning drums and turns it into a career where he can be home with the family in the evenings. He has an ear and the artistry to work on drums so that musicians can draw the right sounds out of each drum. He approaches his work as an art form, helping drummers nail down the sound by providing the appropriate instruments. He uses the analogy that you can’t get a Led Zeppelin drum sound with a Beatles drum set. He starts with an idea of which drum will make the coolest sound for a project. Then, he selects the shells, changes the heads and fine tunes each drum until the sound is perfect.

If someone describes what they want, he brings the right gear for their sound. He tells me the story about Paul McCartney’s drummer, Abe Laboriel Jr., who called and said that Paul wanted drums that sounded like ‘early James Brown.” Abe warned Ross not to be offended if Paul asked him to make changes on the drums when he arrived. Ross set up the drums he had selected for Abe, and when Paul arrived, Abe began to play. Paul turned to Ross and said, “That’s pretty good. Do you have a snare drum that’s higher?” Ross made the change and Paul shook his head

and said, “No, no you were right the first time.” When Paul came into the control room later, he high-fived Ross and said, “Nailed it!”

Ross works in private recording studios as well. Sometimes he is hired to build a drum set that stays in an individual’s studio. He usually builds what he calls a “meat and potatoes” set; a vintage drum set that has been modified to be highly versatile so it can cover a variety of styles. Some days, he will be working on a recording session for up to 12 hours and other days, he will set up a set for a session and then move on to the next. If there are no sessions, Ross finds himself at his warehouse working on drum sets, experimenting with combinations of drums and modifying the sounds of his drums, getting them ready for the next project.

His first year in business, he actually made a profit. Business doubled every year for a while. Ross acknowledges that he may work too much, but he says that it doesn’t feel like work. He likes to be around creative, successful people. It’s a great environment and he feels lucky to be a part of it. He does have hobbies outside of his work. He is in the ocean every chance he gets, collects hot rods and spends the rest of his free time with his wife and children. He describes his wife of thirty years as a ‘saint’ and says that they work as a team and help each other.

When they were on their honeymoon, they were planning to spend three nights in Montecito and then they were to head off to Maui. During their time in Montecito, Ross received a call from the guy who was running his shop while he was out, who said that Jefferson Airplane wanted to book him. Ross knew he had to go because it was a great connection and he didn’t want to lose it. His wife readily agreed, and she and Ross were flown to the Bay Area. While Ross worked with the band, she spent the days shopping and as Ross explained to her, “Hopefully, this would allow them to take more trips later on.”

shopping and as Ross explained to her, “Hopefully, this would allow them to take more trips later on.”

At the urging of his now-deceased friend, Jeff Porcaro, a Hidden Hills resident and first-class session drummer who started the band Toto among other top bands, Ross and his wife began to look for a home in Hidden Hills. It took them two years to find the right home, but as they are now celebrating their 25th year of living in Hidden Hills, the wait was worth it. They moved to Hidden Hills when their boys were very young and love living in the peaceful community. When they first bought their home, the woman who owned the house had only one condition. She needed to live there another 6 months until her son graduated from high school. Ross and his wife agreed to the stipulation and moved into the home in July. They knew they had found the right place when they experienced their first Halloween in Hidden Hills. Rivers of children covered the streets and the sense of community was strong. Ross knew they were staying. A while later they demolished the home and built a home that reflected their lifestyle. It is built with big stones, rough timbers and big fireplaces. When I ask Ross if he has a drum room, he replies, “The whole house is a drum room.” He adds, “This is the house that drums built.”

“Each drum set is a community,” Ross says. “They can’t be at odds with each other. They have to resonate in harmony.” As Ross changes drum heads and tunes the drums daily, it is obvious that not only does he create a community with his drums, he creates a vibrant, harmonious community in his home and in his life.

PINEAPPLE PARADISE

As the temperature heats up and we begin to trade in our jeans for shorts and sweaters for tank tops, a litany of cocktails come out of hibernation to celebrate the return of summer. Long days spent lingering in the sun call for bright, fruity, refreshing libations meant to be sipped over smoky BBQ dinners or hot afternoons on the beach.

With a relatively brief window of time available to enjoy such frosty beverages, I’m always frantically trying to fit them all in. From frozen daiquiris to margaritas to piña coladas, there’s no shortage of amazing sippers to savor on a warm summer evening. One classic and one riff on a favorite, these two pineapple-filled libations should keep you quenched well into the dog days of summer.

Pineapple Jalapeño Sangria

What better way to spend a summer afternoon than sharing a pitcher of sangria among friends? This recipe is a riff on the classic. The combination of sparkling wine, pineapple and jalapeño makes for a refreshing sipper with a bit of heat on the back end. Feel free to tinker with the spice level by adding extra jalapeño syrup (just remember this will also result in a sweeter final product). • ¾ cup of sugar • ¾ cup of water

• 1 jalapeño, sliced

• 1 cup fresh pineapple juice

• 1 bottle of dry sparkling wine

Place water in a sauce pan over high heat and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat and add sugar and jalapeño slices. Stir until sugar is dissolved and strain into a jar.

Combine sparkling wine, jalapeño syrup and pineapple juice. Stir and chill in the fridge. Serve in a pitcher with pineapple and jalapeño slices for garnish.

The Piña Colada

Nothing says summer like a frosty Piña Colada. It may be kitschy, but it is downright delicious and begs to be enjoyed on white sands, lounging in front of the ocean. The perfect combination of rum, coconut and pineapple. • 2 ½ oz rum

2 oz fresh pineapple juice

1 ½ oz coconut cream (Coco Lopez) • ½ cup crushed ice

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Serve in a chilled glass. Garnish with a cherry and a pineapple wedge.

EN ROUTE TO A SWEET, CHOCOLATE-MAKING EXPERIENCE IN THE HEART OF GHENT, BELGIUM.

Three days before my friend and I departed for Europe to board a river cruise traversing the waterways of the Netherlands and Belgium, we woke up to the news that two suicide bombers detonated explosives at Brussels’ airport and one of the city’s metro stations.

An inevitable discussion about whether to stay home or ship out followed.

When we checked in with AMA Waterways, the Thousand Oaks-based cruise line we were traveling with, to see how the cruise would be affected, we were told there would be more Netherlands and a little less Belgium for security reasons. Within five minutes, we decided that if we stayed home, the forces of evil in the world would win and would miss out on something special.

That said, we were also a little concerned that a cruise would be a bit stodgy given the travel formats long-standing reputation for drawing mostly retirees. However, Peter Whitehead, the AMA Serena’s Australian-born cruise director, promptly put our concerns to rest with his boisterous delivery of passenger instructions, announcements and off-the-cuff remarks about what to expect at the various stops. If we tuned on the Travel Channel a year from now and found Whitehead hosting a show, we would not be surprised.

I had previously visited Amsterdam, which lives up to its reputation as a city that is at once historically refined, unabashedly modern and a touch decadent. However, I was interested

in exploring cities and towns beyond the country’s pulsating hub. My friend, Derek, a first time visitor, and I were somewhat disappointed with less time in Belgium, but figured we would make the most of our limited time in Antwerp and Ghent. What ended up being the highlight, however, was the discovery of small cities and story-bookstyle towns that were on the river, yet also a little bit off the beaten track.

Amsterdam was the first and last stop on the journey, and the perfect place to bookend the trip. The cities and towns we visited in between provided rich insight into how the Dutch made a profound impact on the world through its history--from its maritime, architectural and technological contributions to its role in shaping the world’s great trade routes in the 17th century.

While champagne traditionally kicks off a cruise, we kicked off ours with pre-shipboard visit to the House of Bols, which turns the traditional distillery tour on its head. The museum not only features rooms with historic distillation equipment and marketing paraphernalia, but also an aromatics hall showcasing their prolific liqueur range. The tour culminates with a visit to the Mirror Bar, where the visitor picks a recipe for a cocktail from a computer touch screen, based on his or her favorite flavor profiles and preferred strength of spirits.

HIDDENDESTINATIONS

The first morning, we joined our fellow travelers on a canal cruise and walking tour, which drives home the fact that the Dutch are masters at bridging practicality with beauty and artistry. The slender, iconic row houses, for example, were born out of the owners’ interest in paying lower taxes on their properties by building up rather than out. Picturesque canals, which can also be found in towns throughout the country, underscore the ways the Dutch coped with much of their land being below sea level and how they used their geographic location to become one of Europe’s great empires.

That afternoon, we got out of Amsterdam and our urban comfort zone in the Netherlands’ north. Edam has the feel of a village one may find in neighboring Germany, with many of its homes spread and flanked with lush yards. It is known for its eponymous cheese, and just try not to go into a cheese shop for sampling and succumbing to buying a kilo or two. Volendam has a delightfully maritime flavor, with a boardwalk lined with several seafood shacks proffering fresh caught herring and an impressive array of deep fried seafood indulgences. We could not resist checking out the local bars with regular patrons young enough to be our children encouraging us to join the party.

Although several sites in Amsterdam underscore the cultural importance of its royal past and present, a trip by bus out into the country on the second day put this national pride into context. We passed Audrey Hepburn’s childhood home en route to the Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn. Though less ostentatious than many of France’s chateaux and Britain’s manor houses, the stately expanse (built for Dutch king William III and Mary II of England between 16841686) captures the collective Dutch passion for travel, landscaping and fine arts cultivated by the descendants. The tearoom itself is a royally satisfying experience, offering the most flavorful orangetinged carrot cake in our recent memory along with sophisticated custom tea blends that warded off the end-of-winter chill.

After Het Loo, we embarked on the modified itinerary, which started with Nijmegen. The city center is divided between a wide boulevard with chain stores and a grid of ritzy, funky narrow streets with arty one-off boutiques. Unlike Amsterdam, you have to make an effort to find hidden monuments and historic sites (including a historic synagogue and tribute to “Kitty,” regarded as that city’s Anne Frank). What made this stop magical, besides an unexpected sun shower that brought out a rainbow, was walking amid locals going about everyday life rather than rushing to a museum or play.

During our day in Antwerp, Belgium, we savored the Cathedral of Our Lady and the master works of Peter Paul Rubens in the morning. We took an afternoon bike tour through its thriving Jewish quarter and Zurenborg, an adjoining neighborhood distinguished with Art Nouveau architecture. In between, we refueled with hand-cut frites and sauce at Frituur Suikerrui and apple beignets (the coquettish Belgian cousin of Dutch apple pie) at Désiré de Lille. Even with extra security forces installed all over town, we were moved by the way locals carried on and remained friendly.

We spent a half day crafting chocolate at Ghent’s Chocolaterie Van Hecke, then doubled back to Netherlands territory for walking and biking around Middelburg, which has architecture, history and food that blends Dutch and Belgian sensibilities. We decided to abandon ship (food wise) to nibble at their farmer’s market and take in an early supper at deHuifkar, known for its mussels, but serving excellent salmon and white asparagus off season. While Amsterdam is always a fantastic place to visit, I could actually visualize myself living in Middelburg, or at least spending a full month there.

A bike tour around the fortified city of Willemstad not only took us through more storybook cheerful streets, but also an eccentric anti-

Summer 2016 | Hidden Hills Magazine 53

war art installation outside the city walls, anchored with a funky bar built into a hill. We found the tiny and sweetly melancholy Kinderdijk to live up to its reputation as an essential stop for a historic appreciation of the country’s iconic windmills (which still keep the land above water), as well as a simpler way of life captured in the works of Rembrandt and Van Gogh that still goes strong today.

While most of our waking hours were spent off the ship, we had to admit that the lush amenities aboard the AMA Serena made it enticing to sit out a few of the tours. In addition to generous boutique hotel-inspired staterooms, the on-board experience incorporated such old-school touches in its nightly entertainment (from a peppy pop singer, to a classical string quartet to a game night). Food in the restaurant was generally excellent as was the service. We also took advantage of the “chef’s table” (though my food sensitivities resulted in a meal less spectacular than my shipmates’). Chunky, home-style soups served daily were highlights, as was the Chaine de Rotisseurs dinner on the second to last night.

Derek and I planned two extra days in Amsterdam to get some quality time at The Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, two of Europe’s most essential museums. Though I had visited them on the previous trips, it was impossible not to have a greater appreciation for the paintings after having visited their real life inspirations. We also glimpsed into Amsterdam’s cultural future with a stay at the INK Hotel (a posh boutique property built into former newspaper offices, with fantastic breakfast and cocktails) and an evening at the original Supper Club, a quirky marriage of

culinary and performance art, with pre-dinner drinks at its adjoining Apt. Bar.

Eating Amsterdam Tours expanded our appreciation of the Netherlands’ seemingly simple diet via a more in-depth exploration of the eclectic Jordaan quarter. Stops include historic “brown cafes” (one with Dutch apple pie so good, Bill Clinton regularly orders it) and various food specialty shops. The area is also home to the Noordermarkt organic market (arty and popular with tourists) and the Boerenmarkt, where locals do a lot of their regular grocery shopping, and close to the Nine Streets, a fashionista’s paradise packed to the brim with wonderful one-off shops stocking everything from vintage and vintage-inspired frocks to haute couture and home décor.

Hidden Hills Mommy and Me

Over 15 years ago a group of moms came together to create the Hidden Hills Mommy and Me group. It was the beginning of a lasting tradition that has become one of the many reasons families flock to this community. You might think you know all there is to know about Mommy and Me just from the name, but there’s more to this group than you might think. For starters, you don’t actually have to be a mom to get involved! They say it takes a village, and when that village is Hidden Hills, you know that there will be fun, friendship, and so much more. The group is a tight knit circle of moms and kids who are there for each other through good times and bad. Sure, other communities have programs designed to get moms and kids together. But like so many other things about Hidden Hills, this particular group is especially amazing. They don’t just meet for play-dates, they celebrate life’s milestones together, like baby showers, birthdays and holiday. And, they show up for each other during challenging times, too, with meals and help with errands when anyone is sick or just going through a difficult time. Read on for a Q and A with Mommy and Me’s current chairwoman, Eniko Gold, to learn all about this incredible group of women and children.

A. We ask our members to host a play date and we meet at the host’s home for two hours. The host serves light refreshments and moms can come and go, we eat, chat, and watch the children play. It’s very non-formatted!

Q. What are some of the fun traditions the group takes part in in the community?

A. We organize the Hidden Hills Egg Hunt on the Friday before Easter that has become a tradition and is loved by so many in the community. This event is open to all residents and we get a large turnout every year. We

meet at the Spring Valley Arena, eat, drink, and have a “surprise” visit from the Easter Bunny. Then the kids go on the egg hunt around the tennis court. This year we had about 150 people come out for the event. It’s not only for moms and their children but also for dads, grandparents, really the whole family. Even out of town visitors join us for this fun event. In September our group builds a float and participates in the parade for Hidden Hills Fiesta. Last year we sat on piles of hay and wore matching t-shirts and cowboy hats. It was such a fun experience! The kids loved riding on the trailer and waiving and throwing candy to the residents.”

Q. Do the moms ever socialize sans kids? “Mommys without Me”? I’ve heard about some type of moms-only holiday party with, well, let’s just call it a “naughty” gift exchange?

A. We do have an event, “Dirty Santa”, in December where moms get together in the evening and exchange fun gifts! Dirty Santa is always a potluck hosted at a group member’s home. It’s a super fun night for us. We really let loose and laugh at the outrageously funny gifts and enjoy each other’s company. We also organize other social groups that are made up of members of Mommy and Me. One example is The Hidden Hills Birthday Club, which I’m proud to be organizing. The Hungry Wives’ Club is another group that meets for dinner at a member’s house to eat and learn quick new recipes—a must for busy moms. There is also a Hidden Hills Running Club and Hidden Hills Bunco, which is a monthly game night that members trade off hosting. There are also Book Clubs and more Recipe Clubs. We’ve had lectures, guest speakers, and recently, a member hosted a CPR Class at her home. I look forward to bringing having more speakers and educational events in the future.

Q What about when the kids get older? Can moms with older kids still be involved with Mommy and Me?

A. The group is mainly for moms of children between the ages of 0-5, but if the kids are older, we have an alumni list that moms can join. Alumni are invited to participate in all of the events. If you aren’t a mom, you can support the group by helping the moms and taking part in meal trains, birthday parties and other celebrations.

A. The best thing about being a part of this group is meeting and becoming friends with incredible women. The support moms give each other in this group is unparalleled. We organize meal trains when someone has a baby or has surgery. We organize baby showers, and give each other rides to doctor’s appointments. We watch each other’s children when we are in a pinch. We reach out during difficult times. We care. Another great thing is finding friends who are in the same phase in life and sharing the ups and downs that come with this territory.

Fitwall

Ten months ago Hidden Hills resident, Michael Penner-Chacon, opened Fitwall on Agoura Road. It’s an entirely new approach to a total body workout that combines both engineering innovation and a

deep understanding of body mechanics to create an efficient training method that works for all ages and ability levels. Fitwall was the brainchild of founder Doug Brendle, a high level athlete with a background in mechanical engineering. The Fitwall itself is a vertical steel wall with four ridges for grabbing onto and four shallow platforms for foot placement. The physical experience is similar to that of rock climbing and keeps the user’s muscles in a constant state of en-

gagement. Businessman Ethan Penner (Michael’s father) and startup entrepreneur, Josh Weinstein, partnered with Brendle to create Fitwall Ventures, LLC, in 2013. Michael’s mother, a life long fitness enthusiast, was also a driving force. Headquartered in Irvine, Fitwall now has locations in Solana Beach, Newport and Calabasas in California, as well as Michigan, Colorado and Arizona. Fitwall has already garnered major attention in the fitness world, making Fast Company’s

Workouts utilizing the Fitwall are designed to give an efficient full body workout in 40 minutes. Small class sizes allow the highly trained coaches to carefully monitor the form of participants and implement modifications so that everyone can get the most benefit out of every session in a safe and healthy environment, regardless of any injury they may be working around. “Our goal is to make you move better,” explains Michael. “It’s important that people have mobility and flexibility as they age. We work with athletes—we call everyone who trains with us athletes—from age 12 (with adult supervision) on up to improve strength, flexibility, cardiovascular capacity, and coordination.” Michael is also especially passionate about introducing Fitwal to those who have never worked out in their lives. “We are careful not to exhaust people or push them past their capacity, but rather to help them increase it over time,” says Michael. A proprietary software system tracks results. A chest strap monitor is worn during every workout, tracking each athlete’s performance in real time on an iPad mounted on each Fitwall. Athletes can log on from anywhere to check their progress. Fitwall combines the fun social appeal of group exercise with the results one would expect from the attention of a personal trainer and is designed for all ages and all abilities. “People as young as 12 years old work out here with adult supervision, so we can have three generations of a family together in one class,” Michael explains. “The more effort that’s put in, the greater the results,” Michael says. “Three to five times a week is ideal to get in shape fast and see significant effects. It’s the athlete’s level of commitment that makes the difference.” At the end of each class, athletes are treated to a shot of coconut water and a cold towel soaked in peppermint and lavender.

For those who want to get into shape quickly, Fitwall offers a Six Week Challenge every quarter that provides athletes with unlimited sessions, a nutrition plan to follow and a private Facebook group. The results speak for themselves: improved energy, increased strength and rapid fat loss all in six weeks. Everyone is encouraged to try Fitwall. The first class is free and additional individual “drop in” classes are $30 each. Five and ten class punch cards are available as well as unlimited membership packages for $189 per month.

Thai with a Twist

Thai food that satisfies cravings and gives a jolt to the taste buds is something people are in constant pursuance of. Those who consider themselves to be connoisseurs of the rich tasting, Asian cuisine need to look no further than Thai Fusion Bistro located in West Hills. Hidden Hills residents will be overjoyed to know that delivery is free within two miles of the gates, which means dinner not only should always be served, but also served deliciously.

The owner, Keith Miller, has been a general contractor in the community for over 43 years, building in predominately residential areas. He was vacationing in Thailand when he met

his current wife, Nok who is originally from there. The two enjoyed eating at a quaint Thai restaurant near the hair salon Nok owns. The food was so superb and carefully crafted that they befriended the chef, Lak Nikhomkhet.

Later, when Lak left that job as a chef, Nok took Lak to consult with a renowned and respected budhist monk about what her next step should be. His divine inspiration was that the two should open a restaurant together Keith and his wife valued Lak’s cuisine so much that they decided to take the advice and go for it. The plan, open a restaurant that offeres generous portions, delectable food and top notch

service to each customer. From there, the concept of Thai Fusion Bistro was born. Although his background in general contracting is seemingly opposite of owning a Thai bistro, he describes it as remarkably similar work. “You’re always managing employees, managing client expectations and serving people with a smile on your face,” said Miller. “Now I’m serving great Thai food to people who love the food.”

Many of the dishes on the menu are traditional Thai dishes, from the chicken satay to the pad thai (which they sell 300 per week on average). The dishes that add fusion to the traditional meals include duck tacos and a curried chicken pizza. The filet mignon with green beans stir fry is known to “melt in your mouth” according to Miller. The restaurant also offers a wide selection of beer and wine, which pairs with the food in an ultimate matrimony of flavor. The bistro offers gluten free, vegan and kosher dishes as well..

“People ask what my connection to a Thai restaurant is and I say, ‘My wife is Thai and I’m fusion,’” said Miller.

The woman behind the flavor, Chef Nikhomkhet, treats each task in the kitchen as though it is an art piece in need of careful curation. Even when she makes the cucumber salad from the menu, she spends hours deseeding each cucumber cube one by one so the juice is not compromised. “She’s not willing to cut corners to get something done faster, she wants the quality there,” said Miller. “The key to this whole restaurant is Lak.”

Thai Fusion Bistro offers a fresh perspective on the Thai dining experience as a whole. Both Miller and his wife strive to make the restaurant not only a place to dine, but also a unique experience for both the taste buds and for the people sharing meals with one another. They go beyond the plate to provide the customer with a dining experience worth sharing.

“The people are genuinely enthusiastic about the quality and presentation of the food and that makes me feel like a proud father, said Miller. “It makes this whole thing worthwhile.”

Skin Renaissance

In 2001, Dr. Celia Brown opened Skin Renaissance, located on Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills. Dr. Brown is a distinguished graduate of Cornell University and UCLA School of Medicine. With a background in both emergency and family medicine, Dr. Brown is known not only for her artistry and technique in the treatment of cosmetic skin concerns, but also for her empathetic approach to patient care. “The office is more of an intimate setting. I see fewer patients

so I can really take the time necessary to understand both their physical concerns, as well as how those physical issues are affecting them on an emotional level.” Patients have even joked that what they do at Skin Renaissance is better than Xanax because often times it’s exactly what’s needed to boost their self esteem, confidence and over all outlook on life.

The most common treatments include Botox, filler and peels, and when done artfully

and skillfully, the overall improvements are natural and dramatic. “People will know you look amazing, but won’t be able to put their finger on what’s changed,” Dr. Brown says.

For being a medical practice, Skin Renaissance certainly has a homey feel. Dr. Brown has carefully decorated her space so that patients are comfortable and relaxed. Oriental rugs, artwork and comfortable furnishings combined with the friendly staff, ensure that the experience is both welcoming and

supportive. Instead of feeling like they’re in a sterile doctor’s office, patients feel like they’re in a good friend’s living room.

Dr. Brown treats women and men of all ages and recommends taking preventive measures prior to the common signs of aging. “The day you look in the mirror and feel you appear deflated, come and see me. If there’s anything you don’t like about the way your skin is looking, come in and we’ll talk about it.” Dr. Brown honestly assesses what’s possible and what isn’t, so that her patients will have a positive outcome. “I help patients be realistic about what they can hope to achieve. If it’s beyond what I can do here, if they need surgery to get the results they’re after, then I refer them to someone,” Dr. Brown explains.

At Skin Renaissance they utilize all the latest techniques and products available to ensure that the patients get the very best results possible. Bellafill, a FDA approved filler for correction of facial wrinkles and acne scars, is the only collagen filler with microspheres. “The same particles that have been used for years to surround medical devices like pacemakers is what’s contained in Bellafill, so it’s very safe,” Dr. Brown explains. “These particles create a sort of lattice that your body’s own collagen grows like a vine. The results are very long lasting.”

Another popular treatment is Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for the reduction of fullness beneath the chin. Winner of the prestigious 2015 Allure Best of Beauty Breakthrough Award, Kybella is a non-surgical method of effectively reducing the fat under the chin and tightening the skin so that there’s no sagging. Additional procedures performed at Skin Renaissance include body contouring, laser hair removal, the treatment of veins and skin resurfacing. Dr. Brown also carries the highest quality skin care line, PCA Skin, for daily cleansing, moisturizing, and overall maintenance and sun protection. Dr. Brown’s goal is for her patients to be completely satisfied with their results. If you are ready for a more proactive approach to anti aging, but want to avoid invasive surgery, visit Skin Renaissance and have a consultation with Dr. Celia Brown.

Architecturally Sound

Structures should be sound and stable in order for them to stand. Rarely do people think of how these magnificent structures stand so effortlessly. Yet, they place their trust in them not to collapse upon entry and to withstand the outside elements no matter how dire they may be. The careful thought and planning that is dedicated to each structure, whether it be your next-door neighbor’s home or your doctor’s office building is both immense and complicated.

Ryan Levis, a Hidden Hills resident, not only knows the type of careful planning required on

each job, but also how the careful attentiveness to each client is key to building the ultimate home. Transforming the blue print into a livable residence is a task any licensed architect can perform. However, Levis is set apart from the rest because of his ability to dissect each want and need of the client and to bring to fruition a structure that isn’t just stable, but a personal statement of the client’s vision themselves.

“Part of being an architect is that you wear many hats, one of those hats is like a therapist” said Levis. “I want to listen to the client and give them what they want, yet gently direct when

the other hats of budget, regulations or good design would dictate otherwise.”

Levis took an affinity towards the building process while he was working as a framing carpenter in Whistler, Canada throughout his years attending the University of British Columbia. Through this invaluable experience of a hands-on learning environment, Levis decided to work towards a Masters degree in architecture.

Levis specializes in creating high end residences and is flexible with all different stylistic preferences from traditional to modern

homes. Along with his work in residential areas, Levis was an integral part of the Trancas Country Market project in Malibu and has worked on several other projects in Malibu, including beachfront properties. One of his most notable works was featured in the October 2011 issue of Gentry Magazine, which included a spectacular Balinese inspired home he built on the waterfront in Maui, Hawaii.

“I tend to have a very Japanese mentality with some of my design work, especially considering my experience in Japan and Hawaii, I think I am very adept at inside-outside design with large openings and an integral interior-exterior flow,” said Levis.

Levis dedicates a large portion of his architectural influence to the places he has lived in, such as Japan, Southern California, Vancouver and lastly, Hawaii where he met his wife, Carrie, who works as a realtor in the community, in addition to being the co-founder of the Three Sisters Foundation.

“If one of Carrie’s clients wants an architectural opinion, I am happy to provide that and Carrie is always good if I have an architecture client. She will give them an estimate of how much their home is worth and how much it will be worth after improvements; we’re a duo,” said Levis.

Having a wide array of experience and a breadth of knowledge about not only architecture, but also about general contracting truly separates Levis from the rest.

“I have a carpentry background, which makes me well versed in how buildings go together so I can relate very well to contractors and subcontractors because I speak their language, which is important,” said Levis.

Levis has been known to draw a 3D detail right on the plywood of the house under construction so the carpenters can understand the intent of how something is supposed to be pieced together. Skilled in both hand drawing and computer, Levis is an architect who is proficient in all types of graphic media.

Levis is someone who is continuously inspired by his work. He is the type of architect who will infuse the client’s wishes into each incredible residence he builds, but more importantly will always ensure his work is not only structurally beautiful, but also characteristically breathtaking

Green Thumb Nursery

You can find almost any variety of plant or tree that you might want to include in your landscape design within five miles of Hidden Hills, at Green Thumb Nursery. Green Thumb is a family owned business since 1946. The location on Sherman Way is the flagship store, and offers everything anyone could possibly dream of to create their own personal oasis. They have patio furniture, umbrellas, grills, outdoor décor, bird feeders, seeds (organic and GMOfree even!), pots, fountains, fertilizers, hydroponics equipment, hardware supplies, landscape lighting, irrigation systems, and of course, plants and trees. They even have garden gnomes and an entire room dedicated to fairies. They always have a seasonal section and come holiday season, the store turns into a winter

wonderland rivaling the North Pole.

Green Thumb offers an amazing selection of plants (they work with outside vendors, but also have their own growing grounds), and unmatched service as well. Nancy Newton Lee, who co-owns the nursery with her siblings, Harold Dale Jr., Steve, and Suzye Bergquist, explains that her family’s desire to be the best in the business has driven them to seek out employees who share their passion for horticulture. For some that passion began decades ago. Cal Wright for example, started working at Green Thumb in the 1950s. When asked about the knowledge he’s gained from all of his years of experience, Cal humbly says, “I know what I know.” Suffice it to say, it’s a lot. When nearby Orchard Supply Hardware and Sperling Nursery closed,

Nancy was quick to offer positions to quite a few of the experts who are now happily part of the family at Green Thumb. Diana herself was one of these additions, having worked at Orchard Supply Hardware. Sperling alum, Karine Freligh, was thrilled to have the opportunity to work closer to home, and enjoys seeing many friendly faces including her neighbors as well as former customers from Sperling. “Any time I’m out anywhere wearing my Green Thumb shirt, people come and talk to me about their landscaping. Even my doctor asks for my professional advice,” says Karine.

The company encourages and pays for employees to take the necessary training to become California Certified Nursery Professionals. The staff has extensive knowledge of plants, soil, climate, irrigation, and design. Diana Bustamante, store manager, explains, “We have over 40 employees here, and they are all plant people. Greg and I are both Advanced California Certified Nursery Professionals, and Dallas is a Master.” They are all happy to answer any question you can throw at them about what to plant, where to plant it, what will work with the type of sun exposure, and soil you have, and what type of irrigation system you’ll need to make your selections thrive. “We even offer seminars about once a month to help educate customers,” says Diana. When asked about what sets Green Thumb apart from other nurseries, she quickly responds, “We have the best plant selection. We always have whatever is new and unique, and of course, what’s available and popular. Our staff is extremely knowledgeable, and being a family-owned business, we offer a personal level of service that big box stores can’t compete with.” All of this and reasonable pricing to boot, is what keeps customers—both landscape contractors and DIY folks alike, coming back to Green Thumb time and time again.

For more helpful hints and the latest trends in gardening, visit Green Thumb online at www.greenthumb.com, on Instagram @ greenthumbnursery, and Facebook www. facebook.com/greenthumb.canogapark, and don’t forget to sign up for their complimentary weekly newsletter for interesting articles about landscape design, seasonal planting, events at the nursery, and special money saving offers.

Becoming Aware

74 Hidden Hills Magazine | Summer 2016
HIDDEN HILLS RESIDENT LISA GARR IS THE HOST OF “THE AWARE SHOW” ON KPFK 90.7 FM

Hidden Hills resident Lisa Garr’s name may be familiar to you for a number of reasons. She comes from a “show biz” family (her grandmother was an original Radio City Music Hall Rockette and her aunt is actress Terri Garr who starred in movies like Tootsie, Young Frankenstein, Mr. Mom, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind to name a few. Lisa has made a name for herself as the host and producer of The Aware Show (KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles) and the host of Gaiam Inspirations on Gaiam TV. She also has a show on Hay House Radio called Being Aware and is a weekend host on Coast to Coast AM, syndicated on 500 stations globally. Millions of listeners tune in every month to hear Lisa’s message of awareness and how instrumental it is to healing.

This is a subject Lisa is intimately familiar with. In 1999 Lisa was a competitive mountain cyclist in a championship race in scenic Castaic Lake, California. A severely dehydrated, but highly competitive, Lisa was about to take the lead on a decent when she suddenly lost consciousness and literally fell down a steep hill. What followed was an experience Lisa describes as the most important thing to

ever happen to her. In her book, Becoming Aware, she explains, “The place I was in was magical. It was vast and pure, with a type of expanded consciousness that I had never experienced before in my life. It was beyond words.”

It was in this state of vat consciousness that Lisa saw a silver cord connecting her to her then ex-boyfriend Jon, who had agreed to do the race with her, and recognized the significance of their relationship. Ultimately, Jon became her husband and together they have a daughter, Kayla. But that didn’t happen for quite some time. Lisa floated above her injured body and while she felt drawn to beautiful place of expanded consciousness, she knew she had work to do in this dimension. And so, Lisa reentered her physical body and the long road to recovery began.

Lisa suffered brain damage from hitting her head several times on her fall (her helmet which saved her life, was cracked in 13 places), and the process of regaining speech and short term memory was a long and arduous one. She utilized innovative EEG treatments at a center in Woodland Hills that works with people suffering from brain injuries, ADHD, and seizure disorders. The weakened areas of

Which bus are you on? The fear bus or the possibility bus? Get on the possibility bus to go forward. It is a choice.

her brain, the prefrontal cortex and memory center, were improved over many sessions where electrodes were adhered to her scalp to measure her brain’s response to images that she watched on a screen.

During the healing process Lisa had a recurring dream about a train where joyful people who seemed to be scientists, thought leaders, and teachers were in front of audio panels in a control room, sitting in high backed swivel chairs. In her dream, Lisa always saw the word “Aware” on the side of the train. Lisa says, “I remembered a sentence that came through every time I had this dream: ‘Communicating messages that inspire positive growth and change.’ I decided that this was a direct download from Spirit or whatever dimension was attempting to communicate with me because the message was so clear and it made an indelible imprint on my mind. One morning, I woke up suddenly and said to myself out loud, ‘You have to do this.’” Shortly thereafter an opportunity became available for her to do show on a personal-development radio station. She began having inspiring on-air conversations with healers on what she named The Aware Show after the train in her dream.

76 Hidden Hills Magazine | Summer 2016

This was the beginning of Lisa’s fulfilling her life’s purpose, which is to communicate messages that inspire positive growth and change. Lisa has made this purpose her life’s passion and also, her work, although she is quick to explain that it doesn’t feel like work to her at all. She has been helping others with their own personal journeys and healing processes by hosting radio and television shows as well as speaking and writing. Her book, Becoming Aware: How to Repattern Your Brain and Revitalize Your Life, was published by Hay House, Inc. in 2015 and has garnered tremendous praise from some very well known spiritual leaders including Dr. Wayne W. Dyer (Lisa’s mentor who wrote the foreword), Marianne Williamson (author of A Return to Love), and Jack Canfield (originator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series).

In Becoming Aware Lisa discusses shares the many lessons she has learned through her own near death experience and recovery, as well as her countless interviews through the years with amazing new-thought leaders. She covers “brain-nastics”, a way to help you increase your brain function, how to become a Conscious Catalyst for change, how to overcome stress so that you can be the best partner, parent and friend possible, and how to get back on track when life throws you a detour as it does for all of us at one time or another.

Lisa encourages her listeners and followers to become aware, to practice mindfulness every day in order to create a habit of change not just for those recovering from injury, but for everyone. “It applies to anyone going through anything that leads them to need to establish new habits, recalibrate and be in the now, in the moment,” Lisa says. Lisa herself is always striving to balance between being in the moment, “in the now” as she says, with planning for the future. “As a busy woman, wife, and mom, it’s necessary to find that balance in order to live fully,” Lisa explains.

And what does the future hold for Lisa Garr? She is always evolving her radio show as she is a firm believer that if you don’t reinvent yourself constantly, you will become obsolete in six months to a year, regardless of your field. She’d love to create a Netflix series to help people lighten up and learn how to transform their lives beyond any personal physical or emotional trauma. “We all have the power to heal self,” Lisa says, “Reality may show you a set of circumstances, but it’s how you look at it, how you reframe your mindset around the possibilities.”

Lisa is a living example of this. Her cycling accident in 1999 could have left her stuck in a victim mentality, but instead, she decided to use it as a catalyst to help not just herself, but others to experience a more joyful and healthy way to live life. You can learn more about Lisa Garr and listen to past episodes of The Aware Show on theawareshow.com and tune in to Coast to Coast on 90.7 FM KPFK on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1 pm for more of Lisa’s inspirational conversations.

When you change the way you look at things the things you look at change.

To auto enthusiasts Simon Rubin’s collection is practically the stuff of urban legend. Istherereally a home in Hidden Hills with six garages and scores of jaw dropping automobiles?

When it was suggested to me that Hidden Hills Magazine feature the auto collection of Simon Rubin, the way it was described didn’t add up. “He has six garages filled with all kinds of amazing cars at his house,” I was told. It took a few attempts to connect with Rubin, through his wife, Minette, and I have to admit I was a bit intimidated before our call. I was expecting to engage some kind of captain of industry with a cigar between his teeth and a booming voice. But instead I found a humble, charming gentleman with a colorful South African accent who casually confirmed that he indeed “had some cars at his house.”

A couple Saturdays later, I, along with photographer Malcolm Van Halen, ventured to Rubin’s beautiful estate. Malcolm was excited, saying he had heard

about the collection but didn’t believe it was real. Even Malcolm’s parents, Stine and Alex tagged along because, as Alex put it, ‘they couldn’t resist.’

Tucked away and almost unnoticable, the sprawling assortment spaning decades of models is surreal to behold. Perfectly polished, tethered to trickle chargers, and all (save some restorations in progress) road ready,

The only other thing as impressive as the collection was Rubin himself. An electrician by trade, at 74-years-old, he still “straps on the bags” and goes to work at the electrical contracting company he has owned for a good part of his life. He can convey every detail of each car, down to who may have stitched the leather seats. It quickly becomes clear that this collection is pretty much for him, it’s something that he loves. It’s not really intended to be a showpiece and it is not for investment either. Collecting cars is simply his passion, one that was sparked at the age of 15 in South Africa. “I grew up in the 50’s and I had no money,” recalls Rubin. “I started work at 15 earning 10 dollars a week and I saved 50 bucks after six months and I bought my first car. It was just something I was driven by.”

His other passion, almost surpassing that of collecting is cycling. He is a climber, riding 3 - 5 times per week at about 65 miles a clip climbing a total of 8,000 feet... each ride. “The only reason I go down is to get to the next up,” he says plainly. What better proof than Simon Rubin that those are words to live by?
