FROM BEAUTY PRODUCTS, TO COFFEE, TO PLANT-BASED TACOS, ACTRESS DANIELLA MONET AND HUSBAND, ANDREW GARDNER BRING AN ETHICAL AND PLANET-FRIENDLY

APPROACH TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP

While you may recognize Daniella Monet from her ten-year stretch on various nickelodeon shows—with Victorious as the most notable—she and her beautiful family have since been building an empire of unique brands and investments focused around living a vegan lifestyle for the past

several years and they are excited to bring their efforts to the Calabasas and Agoura community. Daniella and her husband, Andrew, met over ten years ago during the peak of her acting career and have been navigating life together ever since. Together they have each founded their own sustainable brands in hopes of providing clean, cruelty free and ethically sourced products to consumers.

Written by Elle Rama | Photos by Samantha Montgomery

Sharing Daniella’s love for the planet with the desire to grow their family in the coming years, Andrew decided to leave his job in finance and establish Drew Coffee, allowing him to design a product he loves from scratch while prioritizing raising a family. Working with small coffee farmers from across the globe, he has been able to source his coffee in a way that supports local agriculture in small communities without sacrificing the quality. Using biodegradable and compostable packaging

made vegan skincare, haircare, and makeup products at an affordable price. After 20+ years of struggling to find cruelty free, vegan beauty products they could trust from brands that prioritize health and sustainability, Daniella and Evanna dedicated Kinder Beauty to providing a solution bundled in one purchase that ships to your door every month. Their platform strives to educate their community and advocate for a lifestyle that benefits all people, animals, and the earth through purchasing habits.

BEING ETHICAL ENTREPRENEURS HAS ALLOWED THEM TO DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO CREATING PRODUCTS THAT WILL MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE AND CREATE SPACE FOR IMPORTANT TOPICS THEIR COMMUNITIES CARE ABOUT.

as well as air roasting as a cleaner alternative to traditional drum roasting, Drew Coffee continues to seek out ways in which they can minimize their carbon footprint.

Daniella also set out on her first entrepreneurial endeavor as a founder, working alongside her partners and co-founders, Evanna Lynch and Andrew Bernstein to create Kinder Beauty. Subscription based, Kinder Beauty is a bundle that includes ethically

While both Daniella and Andrew have always prioritized living a more conscious lifestyle, their passion took on a new meaning when they welcomed their first child, Gio, in 2019. Now, their mission was magnified under the lens of building a healthy and safe future for their family. Being ethical entrepreneurs has allowed them to dedicate themselves to creating products that will make the world a better place and create space for important topics their

communities care about. After dating for six years, their roles drastically changed within their relationship as they tackled marriage, new business endeavors, and parenthood. With new territory came new challenges, but also a new perspective on life and thus, the podcast Adulting Like a Mother Father was born. Talking about everything that comes with “adulting” from finances and fitness to childbirth and relationships, their podcast served as an honest and relatable conversation for anyone going through the trials and tribulations that come with being an adult. Their weekly discussions became therapeutic for the couple and gave them the opportunity to meet many new people who were willing to share their own stories about parenting and life.

As their family continued to grow and their daughter, Ivry, was born, they decided to uproot their life in Sherman Oaks and move to Agoura. Though they are excited to begin raising their family in such a beautiful neighborhood, they are equally as thrilled to see what

Spring 2022 | Hidden Hills Magazine 21

they can do for their new community. Andrew dreams of opening a coffee shop and Daniella hopes to bring a vegan restaurant to town. As founders and parents, they have also taken the title of investor and continue to seek out new brands to support that align with their values.

With a previous connection to Chef Dave Anderson working as a waitress at one of his restaurants when she was 16 years old, Daniella was already invested in his journey of creating delicious, vegan recipes. So when Dave and his co-founder Bill Glaser established Outstanding Foods, Daniella jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it with the goal of providing tasty, yet guilt free options to the masses. With their truly outstanding product in the hands of so many people, their dream of starting a vegan restaurant to serve the Los Angeles area quickly became a reality. Sugar Taco now has two locations and is living out their belief that great food and great ethics go hand in hand as they have refined authentic Mexican cuisine using only clean, vegan ingredients. Daniella is actively working to open a new location to serve the Calabasas and Agoura communities so they can regularly indulge in the incredible vegan food experience that Sugar Taco has created.

Andrew and Daniella’s most recent investment in PlantBaby is another endeavor they are especially enthusiastic about. Dedicated to developing a portfolio of organic, plant-based foods and beverages that are pediatrician-approved, PlantBaby has launched their first product, Kiki Milk, and is currently formulating their next, Toddler Milk. Working with a team of pediatricians and change-makers to continue introducing products to the market that are not only safe, but healthy, for children, Kiki Milk boasts an ingredient list that parents could easily make at home. PlantBaby even encourages customers to use their recipes themselves, but are dedicated to supporting their community by supplying a product that is free of dairy, gum, soy, and gluten so that parents can confidently give their kids milk they love.

The passion projects that have blossomed within the past years as Andrew and Daniella have embraced their path as ethical entrepreneurs are inspiring and are only the beginning of this new chapter in their lives. The power couple will be on the hunt for new opportunities and eager to grow their communities in the Agoura and Calabasas area. You can follow along on their journey as business owners and parents on Instagram and on Spotify or Apple music by subscribing to Adulting Like a Mother Father.

SUPER TUSCAN

Art-forward boutique hotels infuse new energy and excitement into one of Italy’s “go-to” regions for food, wine, fashion, and culture.
Hotel Le Fontanelle, just beyond Siena, offers guests a picture perfect Tuscan dusk among other luxury amenities.

When it comes to a destination offering the best of all things Italian, you just can’t go wrong with Tuscany, including its art and fashion hub Florence, its fabled wine country and its many historic towns dotting the countryside all the way up to the Atlantic coastline. And for those just planning their first European vacations since early 2020, there’s

something to be said for choosing a place that’s familiar, whether it’s a first or a fifteenth visit. On the other hand, experienced travelers are going to want to experience a region like Tuscany with a fresh pair of eyes.

Over the past two years, independent hoteliers in Florence, the wine country and elsewhere intuited travelers to Tuscany would want an experience combining old world luxury and a more forward-thinking

perspective of this perennially popular region of Italy. Whether your idea of la dolce vita is a fiveday jaunt to culture capital Florence, two weeks in the cinematic splendor of the Tuscan interior, or a stay in a coastal town that’s not yet been overrun by the masses, they have you covered. And if you want a little bit of everything, you can have it (and book it) as well.

The intimate DIMORA PALANCA, opened in Florence during Summer 2021, began its existence as a private 19th Century home-turned-salon, as the Palanca family were patrons of the arts. To transform the structure into an urban retreat very different from other five-star Florence properties, hotelier Laura Stopani enlisted the talents of architect Stefano Viviani, local artist Paolo Dovichi, executive chef

Giovanni Cerroni, and others to put their statement-making stamps onto this canvas.

According to Stopani, her collaborations with these talents showcase the property’s past glories while elevating it to an impressive new level of “artfully presented hospitality.” Dovichi’s conversation-starting pieces are offset with a clean backdrop of whites, ivories

and grays. Viviani, meanwhile, took care to ensure key architectural features remained prominent, including exquisite frescoes and ornate parquet floors.

Dimora Palanca’s 18 private rooms are outfitted with curated Italian furnishings, state-of-the-art soundproofing, ensuite bathrooms with marble interiors, whirlpool bathtubs and chromatography rain shower heads; covetable bed and bath linens; and bathroom amenities by Florence perfumer Lorenzo Villoresi.

The Orangery (where the Palanca family preserved their garden’s plants during the winter) opens the experience out to those traveling with kids. The private courtyard garden between the buildings brings a touch of the Tuscan countryside to the city with its aromatic climbing jasmine, manicured lawn and stone beds filled with seasonal flowers.

Restaurant Mimesi, located in the villa's original subterranean kitchen, completes Dimora Palanca's sensory concept with a tasting menu of inventive dishes uniting locally sourced ingredients, a mix of Northern and Southern Italian techniques, and pure showmanship. Cerroni’s mission as a chef is clearly to push Tuscan cuisine forward in a way that’s informed by his past experiences around Italy, Spain and elsewhere. The bar, which flanks the casual dining room (where breakfast and informal meals are served), is stocked with exquisite smallbatch craft gins and other spirits, as well as cocktails with regional culinary flair.

28 Hidden Hills Magazine | Spring 2022
Dimora Palanca's 21st Century vision of Florentine luxury is brought to life by hotelier Laura Stopani, architect Stefano Viviani and local artist Paolo Dovichi in the sunlit lobby (top), courtyard garden (bottom left) and private suites (bottom right).

Other amenities and conveniences include the Santa Maria Novella train station (10 minutes away by foot) and concierge-curated tours of Florence's great museums and architectural marvels, a Ferrari driving experience, bespoke luxury shopping tours (based on what you’re shopping for, be it leather goods, high fashion, or antiques), and others based in wine tasting, cooking, local restaurants, wellness and more.

ANTICA

TORRE DI VIA

TORNABUONI 1, meanwhile, is all but guaranteed to satisfy the desires of those who either want to be steps from Florence’s destination museums and shopping (right across the Salvatore Ferragamo flagship store/museum!) or luxuriate in a landmark setting originally home to one of Florence's great renaissance merchant families. The thoroughly revamped 13th Century villa offers a full-on Florentine immersion where cozy co-exists with opulence.

During the hotel’s most recent remodeling in 2021, interior designer Angelica Frescobaldi configured the private rooms and public areas to perfectly mesh with the urban setting, from high ceilings and a trend-defying color scheme of dark pastels to fresh flowers interspersed with artfully assembled items from Italy and other parts of the globe--as one could imagine original and earlier owners would have had it.

The full-service restaurant, opened this Spring, is just as meticulously thought out. Time-tested Florentine dishes are elegantly prepared yet subtly updated with the still-important “farm-to-table” touches people crave when they plan a visit to Tuscany. Breakfast, meanwhile, is all about simple pleasures such as fresh cheeses, fruit, egg dishes and cappuccino served on or adjoining the

roof terrace with some of the city’s best views.

Ponte Santa Trinita, Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo, several architecturally significant churches and museums (Uffuzi Gallery, Accademia Gallery and the Pitti Palace), are practically at the property’s doorstep, as are less touristy areas such as Santo Spirito and the Jewish Quarter. This hotel also offers its own “experience” tours and workshops, such as mixology, olive oil tasting, shopping (of course!) and a tour of the area focused on the Tornabuoni family.

Once you’re outside of Florence, it’s easy to see why Tuscany’s wine country is the stuff of dreams, inspiring countless movies and television shows and begetting many five-star resorts with impressive family pedigrees or multi-generational histories. It can play as a Travel Chanel fever dream—especially when you’ve enjoyed a glass or two of prime Chianti or Super Tuscan. However, when HOTEL LE FONTANELLE reopened in late 2021, there was more going on than refreshing its original 34-room lodging built into the remnants of an entire medieval village. Even when Hotel Le Fontanelle reopened to guests, an even-more-exclusive Club House was being completed.

The inspiration for the property is guided by family matriarch

Giuseppina Bolfo and informed by her multi-decade career in fashion, décor and hospitality. To take the resort to the next level, she commissioned niece/ architect Margherita Gozzi to design the Club House, which fuses cutting-edge building design techniques with stone and other locally-sourced materials resulting in a space harmonious with the original property. While the Club House interiors have a roomier, more minimalist sensibility than the original buildings’ country home setting, impeccable landscaping, gardens, and 360 degrees of rolling vineyards unify the entire resort.

The main restaurant, “La Colonna,” as devised by executive chef Daniele Canella, remains the property’s culinary nucleus. From there, shuttles are available to whisk guests off to Siena, Vallepicciola Winery (also owned by the family), and nearby attractions like

the Farm Le Pietre Vive di Montaperti (home of the “Cooking Class with Nonna Ciana”). Canella describes La Colonna’s menu as “revival of traditional Tuscan and Chianti dishes” that he updates with a careful selection of raw ingredients and also unexpected techniques, like mixing roasted and chilled vegetables to create a memorable root vegetable salad.

Noted chef Giuseppe Lannotti (a.k.a. “the volcanic starred chef of the Kresios di Telese in Benevento”), brought in to design Club House’s dining program, promises to make Hotel Le Fontanelle’s gastronomic landscape even more interesting.

Below, De Russie's art-forward/retro-chic appointments are carried through every guest-room.

Any traveler on the hunt for “the real Tuscany” beyond obvious tourist draws will appreciate what the Atlantic Ocean beach town Viareggio has to offer: A stylish, but non-touristy setting and close proximity to Lucca, Pisa, Cinque Terre and other popular destinations by bus, train or a rented car. THE HOTEL PLAZA E DE RUSSIE, the city’s oldest hotel (founded in 1871 and a popular hangout for literary figures and Russian royalty by 1900) is now a fresh, stylish spot that also happens to be a Relais & Chateau property operated by Salvatore Madonna, who is at once the embodiment of Italian chic and a downto-earth guy who offers useful tips and honest advice on what’s worth checking out.

Spring 2022 | Hidden Hills Magazine 31
Le Fontanelle's clean, modern pool lies in stunning contrast to the ancient villa and 360 degree, rolling vineyard views. Below, the impeccable balance of modern and traditional spans every space and experience, from the exterior, to the cuisine to the inviting and captivating clubhouse. Above, the rooftop terrace/restaurant at Hotel Plaza E De Russie, Viareggio, Italy.

To bring the hotel fully into the 21st Century beyond renovations alone, Madonna collaborated with local art galleries and artists to create a playful ambiance and moved the restaurant (now Ristorante Lunasia) from the top floor to street level to encourage locals to enjoy the work of Michelin-starred chef Luca Landi. As the word “Asia” is embedded in it, it is worth noting that Landi and his international crew turn out several thoroughly unique, globallyinspired items balancing Western and Eastern flavor profiles and presentation. While booking a tasting meal at the chef’s table in the kitchen is a fine idea for a birthday, anniversary or another special occasion, the main restaurant offers a most colorful menu as well.

Ristorante Lunasia and some of the public areas are set off with fresh leaf green and jade furnishings. Brilliant turquoise and ruby are punctuated with black, white and metallic accents in the 33 rooms and 11 suites, with dark woods offsetting the sharp overall look. The hotel also offers penthouse suites with private terraces and stunning views of the sea, Cinque Terre and Apuan Alps along with artisan chocolate and champagne for all guests after check-in, locally crafted organic bathroom amenities, and free Wi-Fi.

PEDALERS FORK IN OLD TOWN CALABASAS

SITS SQUARELY AT THE HUB OF SOME EPIC RIDES.

NOW, WITH THE POPULARITY OF ELECTRIC BIKES, NOVICE RIDERS CAN REACH DESTINATIONS THAT BRING TOGETHER THE BEST INDULGENCES OUR COMMUNITIES HAVE TO OFFER.

STRAP ON YOUR HELMET AND LET'S TAKE A RIDE!

The electric bike scene in Calabasas has grown a cult following in the past years as Pedalers Fork has served the community as a restaurant, coffee shop and bike store, all in one. Acting as a hub for locals with a passion for the environment, good eats, and exercising outdoors, Pedalers Fork has an extensive collection of electric bikes that are perfect for exploring the neighborhood.

Starting at the Calabasas Farmers Market that opens at eight every Saturday morning, grab a latte at the 10 Speed coffee shop and a savory avocado toast breakfast to build up your energy for a day packed with sightseeing. Lined with booths of organic produce, handmade clothing, and unique art, be sure to bring a backpack that has room for a few knickknacks. Once you’ve finished perusing the market and the quaint surrounding shops, Gideon and the team at Pedalers will fit you with the perfect bike and gear for your journey. From there, you can decide which direction to take your adventure. While there is no limit to where an electric bike will take you, as long as you keep a round-trip distance under 20 miles, there are three great options that will allow you to discover the Calabasas surroundings.

The Topanga Trek - About eight miles south lies a pocket of charming antique shops and restaurants that you’ve probably passed by hundreds of times when traveling to the beach. The eccentric character of TOPANGA

CANYON is a refreshing taste of artistic quirk that boasts a string of high-quality vintage stores tucked just off the road. The first, Moona Star, is a woman-owned artist collective and fashion brand that is filled with stunning hand-made jewelry, clothing, decor, and more. Though it is one of the pricier locations in the area, its offerings are of the highest quality and have a minimal carbon footprint. Across the street in the small plaza, the Well Refill has over 80 refillable products providing low waste essentials to all who bring in their own containers. Striving to promote sustainable living, the boutique has handpicked second-hand clothing, accessories, decor, beauty products, and more so that customers can easily practice conscientious buying without sacrificing quality.

Though on theme with vintage clothing, the experience at Hidden Treasures Vintage couldn’t be more different. Everywhere you turn there is a new display of vibrant ancient novelties or a

collection of unique dolls and the eclectic decor will make you feel like you’re in an old theme park. After fawning over endless hordes of memorabilia, you’ll want to grab some lunch before making the trek back home. Upon walking through the vine-covered entrance at the Inn of the Seventh Ray you are greeted by a fairytale-like garden known for being one of the most romantic spots in Los Angeles. Creekside lunch prepared with the freshest local ingredients is the perfect ending to your tour of Topanga Canyon’s best-hidden gem. After 16 miles of riding through the stunning Santa Monica Mountains, vintage shopping at the local small businesses, and an unforgettable creekside meal, you’ll be left dreaming of your next electric bike rendezvous.

Head West to Whizin's - Another alternative that includes many of the same activities, but is a straight shot on more open roads, is the 7.5-mile

ride through Agoura to the Whizin’s Center. With countless antique shops filled to the brim with trinkets from across the globe, you are sure to be occupied for a while looking through their massive selection of decor, art, vintage clothing and more. The Chandeliers and Tulips store is one of the more refined shops in the plaza, adorned with a modern gallery wall and anything you might need when designing the interior of your home.

After browsing antiques, there are several highly rated options for lunch within the mall. Starting with Basta, Italian chef Saverio Posarelli has worked since their opening in 2019 to create masterpieces that reflect the dishes he was served as a child growing up in Florence. With plenty of authentic cuisine secrets under his belt, his restaurant is known as the best Italian food in the area. If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, the Blue

Table Wine and Cheese Bar treats their charcuterie boards as an art form. Loaded with various meats, cheeses, pickles and crackers, their boards are the perfect shared snack before hitting the road again, or you can snag one of their boxed lunches with premade sandwiches and salads to take to a nearby trail. However, you may want to make a final stop to satisfy your sweet tooth at Carrara’s bakery. Their divine pastries are detailed in decadent icings and jams, reminiscent of traditional French and Italian desserts crafted to look as beautiful as they taste.

Northward to Victory - Heading in the opposite direction, the Victory Trailhead 4.5 miles east is the perfect choice for those who want to get in some exercise. The Victory trails extend through five miles of rolling grass hills and meadows of sagebrush and poppies with various routes to choose from based on desired elevation and views. Depending on the loop you take, you can pass through some of the most renowned pastures in

Southern California serving as the setting for movies like Gone With the Wind, The Charge of the Light Brigade, and They Died with Their Boots On. A summer day’s excursion through these stunning trails will leave you hungry for more of the area’s history and probably some pizza too. Three miles down the road you can ride to the Malibu Wines and Beer Garden. Reimagined, old, red brick welcomes you into their beautiful grounds of picnic tables to host a delicious lunch of salty pizza pies, deckedout charcuterie boards, and some refreshing lemonade. Formerly the stables of 1930’s

actor Francis Lederer, this historic landmark is a great addition to the itinerary so you can relax, eat and appreciate some more local history prior to concluding your trip.

The sales and rental team at Pedalers is extremely knowledgeable about their bike options and will highly exceed your needs for various terrain, roads and distances. The bike shop at Pedalers Fork may not have been on your radar previously, but with the ability to ride up to 50 miles on their extraordinary electric bikes you have the perfect excuse to take a joyride around town and discover those shops and restaurants you pass by every day.

WE ALL HAVE OUR DIFFERENCES. WHAT’S YOURS ?

NATIONAL CEREBRAL PALSY AWARENESS MONTH IS CELEBRATED EVERY YEAR IN MARCH TO BRING AWARENESS & SUPPORT TO THOSE LIVING WITH THIS CHALLENGING CONDITION.

After many years away from horses, Bethany Bookin connected with her friends on the Hidden Hills Equestrian Services Committee to arrange to spend a morning at the Spring Valley Arena riding Linda Yallen’s large stallion named King. Frustrated after a shorter ride than expected, Bethany dismounted from the horse and slid into her wheelchair. Familiar with finding gifts buried in every challenge, Bethany immediately pivoted and started a conversation with me. One of the first questions she posed was if I had read the books Out of My Mind and Out of My Heart by Sharon Draper. She soon explained that Sharon Draper is not only a fellow educator and friend, but also a personal hero to Bethany for writing books that shine a light

on what it is to live with Cerebral Palsy, a condition that affects a person’s movement, coordination, muscle tone and control, reflexes, posture, and balance.

Every hour a baby is born with Cerebral Palsy, making it the most common yet complex childhood motor disability affecting approximately 1 million people in the United States and 18 million people worldwide. Out of My Mind is a bestselling New York Times young adult fictional novel narrated by a brilliant ten year old named Melody who was born with severe cerebral palsy (CP). She has a great inner strength and finds delight in most of her observations, although she gets frustrated by the misunderstandings of doctors, teachers, and students since her case of CP limits her physical movement

and ability to speak. Melody is an extremely insightful and intellectual nonverbal fifth grader whose goal is to convey that CP does not restrict intelligence. Eventually with the support of those who love her and a life changing communication device, she finds her voice and advocates that “a person is so much more than the name of a diagnosis on a chart.”

Cerebral Palsy has influenced many aspects of Melody and Bethany’s lives; however, it does not define them. Cerebral means having to do with the brain and Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles. The brain injury that leads to CP is not a contagious disease, rather a condition that can happen before birth, during birth, within a month after birth,

Spring 2022 | Hidden Hills Magazine 41

or during the first years of a child’s life. Being born four months premature was the factor that caused Bethany’s nervous system not to fully develop, leading to her mild CP. Symptoms and conditions vary from person to person, and Bethany differences include issues with physical mobility, muscle stiffness, anxiety, and a sensitivity to sudden loud noises. There are many disparities among symptoms; however, there is little argument as to how individuals with CP are honed by their adversities.

Bethany had many friends in her mainstream classrooms in the Los Angeles Unified School District; however her fellow classmates couldn’t comprehend what it was like to live in a wheelchair. Enlightening others about this effort first opened a door that would bring Bethany closer to her destiny as a motivational speaker. She credits finding her voice to a 3rd grade Calabash Elementary School teacher and incredibly supportive parents who saw that she had a gift for speaking and connecting to individuals who also felt isolated by their differences. Bethany realizes some people haven’t had the

chance to know someone with a disability, so she hopes her open dialogue and answering questions will demonstrate how many struggle with forms of different-abilities, inequality, or diversity, not just those in wheelchairs.

For over three decades, Bethany has transformed the perspective of differentabilities. After graduating college with honors she began working in the school system to continue impressing upon others to “look beyond the physical and start to see one's heart.” This compelled her to create a program called BethAbility, which emphasizes kindness, anti-bullying, compassion, and disability. Bethany shares her golden rule for interacting with someone who has a disability is the same as interacting with anyone else - treat the person with kindness and respect. Her program is a fun cultural discussion on understanding and acceptance that targets middle school, with the first presentation occurring at Round Meadow Elementary School when she was only sixteen years old. Over two decades, she has reworked the format and content of BethAbility, most recently adding a Zoom component to academically engage with students nationwide in districts whose reading curriculum includes her favorite book Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper.

Bethany meaningfully redefines outdated points of view on how one lives with different-abilities. In addition to being an educator, motivational

speaker, and athlete, she is also the only different-abled member of LA Unbound, a dance company founded by dancers and choreographers seeking a non-competitive setting in which to continue their training and satisfy their performance aspirations. Bethany’s mission is to take the fear out of difference, therefore she encourages others to find activities and groups where they find acceptance, since inclusion in a community can bring us closer to who we are and move us in the direction of our destiny.

Sometimes what appears to be a setback can clear the way for transformation with acceptance and gratitude. Bethany wants people to understand that “we all have differences. Mine happens to be sitting down in a wheelchair, needing a little extra assistance with things, but I have dreams like everybody else and if you take the time to listen and talk with me, you might learn something. Take the time to talk with someone who is different instead of assuming or being afraid of people who look or sound different. It’s because we are not used to it so our first reaction is ‘oh my gosh” instead of learning from this opportunity and possibly making a friend.” It is indisputable that Bethany has positively shifted the definition of what it is like to be different and there is nobody else quite like her.

Serving as the only live music space on the West Side, the founders of the Supper Club, located in the heart of Venice, have created a “home away from home for anyone who loves music” just underneath the infamous Venice sign. During the summer of 2015, Corey McGuire decided he wanted to give back to his Venice community by opening his home to young artists who were

new to the area because “‘helping’ started with giving couches, food and advice. Soon it turned into hosting shows where they could share their music and make friends.” Just a few months later, Corey established Winston House, which would serve as the birthplace for emerging artists and a destination for live music and art. Jaden Smith, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Kelly Clarkson, Billie Eilish, Weezer, A$AP Ferg, Janelle Monae, Hozier,

and many more have graced the Winston House stage, making it one of the most desirable confluences of creatives every weekend.

Marta Trapella, Winston House’s Brand Director, met Corey in 2016 after she moved from Europe. He was the first person she met in Los Angeles and he immediately invited her to the shows they put on every

Thursday night. She described Corey’s original loft on Electric Ave just off of Abbott Kinney as “the most eclectic, weird, fun, creative space I had ever seen. Whenever you went there was something new; someone had come in and painted a wall, someone had built a new stage, Corey had thrifted a new ‘grandma’ couch, the paintings hanging on the walls were different every time, new people were living in the house/ crashing on the couches etc. It was the best place, hidden right behind the most popular street in Venice.” When it came time to move Winston House into a

commercial space, they knew they needed to incorporate the incredibly unique decor and warmth of the loft as well as respect the immense history of the building they were moving into. 23 Windward Ave is the oldest commercial building in Venice and was previously home to the iconic St. Mark’s Jazz club. Marta explained, “It was very important when we took over the building that we brought back the same style and look of the building and street that St. Mark’s had. It was an ode to the old Jazz club and Venice’s history that we didn’t want to lose.” They even curated their own house band to recreate the Jazz experience and preserve the soul of the historical music house.

At the same time that Corey was building his community at Winston House, Jake Mathews was at The Waterfront in Venice, pioneering a culture and community down

on the Venice boardwalk. The two brands shared the same mission of creating hospitality brands focused around building community, a great food and beverage experience, a safe space for people to be authentic, and celebrating the arts and culture of Venice. In 2019, Corey partnered with Jake Mathews, the principal owner of the Californian Beer Garden, The Waterfront, to create their hospitality, events and creative services brand, Local Los Angeles. Winston House’s success is based around music and sense of community, but the experience as a whole would be incomplete without the food and beverage program. Maintaining the authenticity of the original House and pairing it with the deep experience in hospitality of Waterfront’s team was the final puzzle piece in realizing the vision for Winston House. Local LA reflects the partnership of both teams, and is a company that owns and operates a portfolio of hospitality, event and media brands focused on influencing where West LA consumers spend their time, money and attention

on a weekly basis, one of which is Winston House.

Driven by the power of music to create community and connection, Local LA is quickly expanding and uses its influence very intentionally. Marta promises “at Winston House we like to have stories with meaningful intentions behind everything - this is a Corey classic. Every event that we do is part of a bigger series.” The Thursday ‘House Show’ at Corey’s old loft carried over to the Winston House everyone knows and loves today, featuring the best new artists and established names. Fridays are dedicated to their very own Winston House band, a collective of some of the best young instrumentalists providing the revered Jazz sound to the house. Their resume includes performing for Toto, Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, The Eagles, Beyonce, Herbie Hancock, and many more. Guests can enjoy the show from the booths accompanied by their renowned menu of eclectic, American

eats that has won them “hottest new restaurant” three months in a row according to Eater LA. Saturdays include events like their Latin Music series “Tambores,” a late-night dance series called “Afters,” a tropical house live band series “ShangriLa” in partnership with local Venice band Paco Versailles, and other Artists they partner with to throw their release parties. They also include mini series that tend to stand out from the rest of their programming that focus on seasonally and culturally relevant artists and brands with weeklong themed events.

And finally, at their biggest one-night events of the year, Winston House partners with trendy, up-andcoming brands, decorates the entire house with a specific theme, and books the biggest artists to perform.

Though the house is an amazing event space that brings communities together every weekend, more than anything, Winston House cherishes the magic of Corey’s original sentiments at his Electric Ave loft. Curating a list of friends, friends of friends, and artists and execs in the music industry, the internal Winston community is given special access to the house and access to their resources and network to help them advance in their careers.

Community members have access to the house on off days to take important meetings, use the house as a workspace, and have the ability to work with the team to create launch events and release parties.

The impact that Corey and the community that grew out of his loft have had on Venice is inspiring to anyone who appreciates art and music. Now, Winston House, under the Local LA empire, will continue its search for young artists and trending brands, as well as dedication to serving the Venice community.

VIRTUAL VIN

DAOU WINES AND GELSONS PARTNER TO STREAM A 21ST CENTURY WINE, CHEESE AND CHARCUTERIE TASTING

Georges and Daniel Daou first conceived a life including wine after emigrating to the South of France during the Lebanese Civil War. Their humble family developed the passion as they rebuilt their lives surrounded by rural vineyards and centuries of winemaking culture. In the early 1980’s, Georges and Daniel Daou moved to Southern California to pursue their American dream. After succeeding at other professions, they began a long search for soil mineralities similar to what they grew up with in France. The vision that their family might create a wine that would joyfully engage the senses of people around the world was realized in 2005 when they discovered Paso Robles.

and explains the local winery was chosen for the launch of the first online tasting event of the year since “Daou is a well sought after brand for our customers who enjoy really good quality ‘Napa Valley-style' wines in Paso Robles. Our customers are very vocal and we’ve gotten a few requests.” Jake has conducted over 20 wine tastings and virtual programs attracting hundreds of customers over Gelson’s 27 chain-wide stores. He has a deep understanding of wine quality and hospitality thanks to his Level 2 Certification in the Wine Experience Education Trust (WEET).

Paso Robles is one of the fastest growing wine regions providing the perfect location for Gelson’s customers to expand their knowledge of wines. Jake Cheung is Gelson’s Director of Marketing

The evening began with a presentation from Lisa Ali, Gelson's American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professional (ACS CCP). The varietals were sipped in harmony with a custom curated cheese and charcuterie platter that included bites of Brillat-Savarin Triple Cream, Old Chatham Three-Milk Gouda, Westminster Rustic Red Cheddar, Kerrygold Irish Cashel Blue, Il Porcelllino Salumi with Truffles, dried apricots and cherries, Raincoast Crisps, and fresh grapes.

Both beginner and intermediate level wine enthusiasts enjoyed a younger Daou Discovery Rosé in addition to appreciating having access to the rare Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

Proprietor and Winemaker Daniel Daou enlightened the participants on the “disrupted innovation” of their collection of red wine. They have been able to produce a standard for Bordeaux varieties due to discovering an ideal environmental climate on what they have named Daou Mountain, located in the northwest portion of the Paso Robles Adelaida District in San Luis Obispo County. Jake Cheung’s goal to enjoy an hour of casual wine education while imbibing and savoring Lisa Ali’s appropriately paired delicacies was achieved and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. The hour-long virtual wine tasting event took place in the comfort of one's own home, so the dress code was casual (pajamas welcome!) and there was no danger of driving under the influence. Daniel reminded

us that reservations can be made for savoring in-person tasting and culinary experiences at Daou Family Estates, 2777 Hidden Mountain Road in Paso Robles (www.daouvineyards. com). Salute!

Meet the New Kids in Town

Last month, Hidden Hills resident Lisa Moriarty welcomed four new “kids” to her home. Although they are traditionally thought of as farm animals, goats also make good pets due to their curious and friendly nature.

There are over 300 distinct breeds of goats, but the dwarf or pygmy goat varieties are most commonly kept as pets as a result of the sweet companionship.

FUN GOAT FACTS:

• Did you know that goats have the only babies in the animal kingdom called kids? That is if you don’t count human babies, of course.

• Baby goats are born with rectangular pupils. This allows them to be able to see in several directions at once, therefore keeping them safe from predators.

• Goats are herbivores born with four-chambered stomachs which allow them to get all the possible energy and nutrients from the food they eat without having to completely chew it up.

• The calls a goat makes are called bleats and they can have regional accents. Just like a human baby, goat kids let you know when they’re in need of something through their voice.

• Goat kids are born fully developed and will be able to walk or stand right away or within a few minutes of birth.
