As we go to press with this issue, outside there are literally hundreds of buds on trees waiting to burst. The clock has lunged forward and we've lost an hour. However, that means Springtime is here and we all gain the awareness that soon we will be

done with the rains—as much of a blessing as they were for everyone. Days will be (consistently) warm and things all around will be livelier. It's a feeling that makes you want to get out and really enjoy everything our community has to offer!

On that note, we hope all of you (no matter where you live) will join us at this year's Hidden Hills Magazine Hootenanny to benefit The Kevin Cordasco Foundation/Something Yellow. If you love great food, great music, and great libations to go with both (who doesn't), you will definitely want to look into this one! May 18th is coming soon and tickets have been going (fast). So head on over to time2hoot.com (or page 34) to learn all about it!

In the “Influencer Age” that we currently find ourselves living in, it can be easy to get caught up in the appearance of luxury that seems to permeate every post we scroll through on Instagram. Though the market has become somewhat saturated, there are still some public figures out there who strive to remain unique in their content creation. One who manages to thrive at this very concept is Hidden Hills’ own, Nicole Isaacs.

Having moved to Hidden Hills at age 8, Nicole spent the majority of her upbringing as an LA native, though her passion for travel and culture was sparked quite early on. “My father is Israeli, so every summer we would travel to visit family in Israel. In addition, my parents were always sure to take us to one new place. They played a huge role in contributing to my passion for food, culture and exploration,” explains Isaacs.

Being that she grew up in a very close and tight-knit family, Nicole always knew she wanted her home base to be in LA. Upon graduating from UCLA with a degree in World Arts & Culture with a Dance Emphasis, Nicole began working at E! Entertainment on the show “Fashion Police”; that gave her a background in production. “Overall it seemed like I was living this great life with this great job. I was in a good relationship and even living with my boyfriend at the time. Everything should have felt perfect, but I started to realize that something was missing. I realized that my passion wasn’t in “pop culture,” but in travel . . . something that had been instilled in me from a young age,” says Isaacs.

After coming to this realization, Nicole decided to follow her gut and, with that, she quit her job, broke up with her boyfriend, and bought a one-way ticket to Italy. “I didn’t look back, and this has been my life ever since,” says Isaacs.

Upon embarking on this new adventure and lifestyle, Nicole began doing freelance work for various clothing companies. Eventually, her work and keen eye for style led to her partnering with several organizations, hotels and brands to create digital media content for

promotional purposes. “Every trip is different. Sometimes I’ll be invited by specific hotels or companies; other times it will be by tourism boards. In addition to creating the content that they would like to use for their own promotion and advertisement, I also write my own article that I post on my website,” explains Isaacs.

Nicole’s expertise in creative and aestheticallypleasing content has led to her spearheading her own production company called HUNGRYApe. There, her client list includes: Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka, Aqua Hydrate, and Deleon Tequila. “At HUNGRYApe, we specialize in digital media content and offer services to any brand, company or resort seeking to increase their quality of branding. The majority of the content we create for them includes landscape and lifestyle footage or imaging,” says Isaacs.

Nicole also has her own YouTube channel where she highlights topics such as beauty, wellness,

travel and culture. Since packing her bags and changing her life to one that revolves around travel and exploration, Nicole has visited over 55 countries (and counting). When asked about her favorite places to travel for food, Nicole claims Israel and Italy as the top two. “Israel is underrated because a lot of people don’t know about it. The Tel-Aviv food scene has grown tremendously over the years. In all of my years traveling there, I have literally never had ONE bad meal in Israel,” explains Isaacs. Though the local cuisine is full of flavor and quality, she also claims that all other genres of food, whether it be pizza or tacos, are a smash hit in Israel. As for Italy, Nicole feels that each meal can be a bit more “hit or miss”; however, the meals that end up qualifying as a “hit” exceed all expectations beyond imagination. While Italy is indeed a hotspot for all foodies alike, the culture and carb-rich country holds a

special place in Nicole’s heart because it’s one of her all time favorite places to visit.

When it comes to experiencing authentic and deep-rooted culture, Nicole’s recent trip to Tunisia allowed her to feel absorbed by the locals’ way of life. “Even though I partake in a lot of the touristy activity for work, I love experiencing the ‘off the beaten path’ places where you are given the opportunity to indulge in something completely foreign and new. To me, that is when you really become in touch with the heart and soul of a place,” says Nicole. In addition, the Philippines and Bali resonated with her deeply in terms of society and culture. “The Balinese truly are one of kind. They are the sweetest, most generous and welcoming group

of people, and it’s special when you get to fall in love with a place based on the energy of its people,” explains Nicole.

Though many travel influencers and bloggers on Instagram have a tendency to promote the “luxury lifestyle,” Nicole feels there is a lot more to be gained by branching out and forgoing some of the 5-star amenities that are offered up. While she often partners with various hotels and receives the opportunity to experience the opulence of these worldrenowned resorts, Nicole often likes to rent a local AirBnB at the end of her trip so that she may learn more about what “real life” is like in the bounty of places she is able visit. “I like to have the best of both worlds,” she says. “I’m not so much about the luxury, but more about immersing

myself in the local lifestyle and culture. Obviously, it’s amazing to be able to work with these incredible hotels and experience what it’s like to stay with them. Yet, it’s not really what I prefer. I often go with the vibe of a place,” explains Nicole. When asked about her most luxurious travel destinations, Nicole claims that Paris and Switzerland are the top contenders. With Paris offering up elegant and timeless grandeur throughout the city, and Switzerland being so pristine and perfect, it’s almost as if it’s not real. “Everything there is also

really expensive,” Nicole adds. Though we all enjoy experiencing the “high life,” every once in a while, Nicole knows first-hand that luxury is not everything when it comes to exploration and travel. That’s why her favorite places to visit are those that are a little more disconnected . . . places not like everywhere else.

Because the majority of her time is spent on the road, it’s no irony that Nicole claims often to feel like a foreigner in her hometown of LA. When she’s not traveling,

Nicole prefers to soak up as much downtime with her family as possible... until she gets ready to embark on whatever next adventure awaits her.

Regarding the market of travel bloggers and influencers becoming more and more saturated, Nicole agrees. She notes it was not like this when she first became involved in this newfound business of marketing and promoting. When asked how she is able to stand out among the crowd, Nicole says,

“If your content is not authentic to who you are, it won’t last. The best thing you can do is just be yourself. If you stay true to who you are and what you are passionate about, no one else is going to be able to do it like you will.”

"HUNGRY GIRL" LISA LILLIEN AT HER WOODLAND HILLS, CA. HEADQUARTERS, "HUNGRYLAND."

HUNGRY Girl

Ihave followed Lisa Lillien and her company, The Hungry Girl, for years and was eager to interview her. I’m a sucker for a woman who admits that she likes food and is not willing to live on mere apples and almonds to be healthy. I also admire Lisa for her entrepreneurship and how she grew her company/ brand from a daily email filled with wholesome recipes, “food finds” and “tips and tricks” each week, to that of a best-selling author, a weekly columnist, a television personality and more. Her delicious recipes don’t require Le Cordon Bleulike skills to achieve her results and for that alone I am a life-time fan.

As Lisa was traveling, our interview was done via email. Her warmth, humor and appreciation for hard work and details came through in our every exchange.

When you first began your newsletter, did you have an idea that the business would grow as it has? Also, did you always know you wanted to create your own company?

When I started Hungry Girl back in 2004, I had no idea what would become of the brand...I never expected it to grow the way it did. I just wanted to help people and do something fun and creative in the healthy eating space. I didn’t have a business plan — I just wanted to put out good content and gain a following. That was before social media and blogs, so there was no way of knowing what would or could happen. It was a wide-open playing field!

I didn’t always know I wanted to create my own business. I was very happy working in entertainment. It wasn’t until we had a “corporate therapist” come into my department at Warner Bros and do 360° evaluations for the executives that the

idea of becoming an entrepreneur even occurred to me. I guess I have him to thank for all of this!

Did you have business role models who you emulate? Or, have you created your own path through your own vision? Or, a little bit of both?

untover provides hunter and jumper training programs designed for the competitive pony, junior and amateur rider at the local, national and international level.

HHI don’t really have business role models who I emulate. I think I created my own path with my own vision. I didn’t really know what Hungry Girl would turn into and so the whole company and the brand just grew organically. My idea was to create something that was popular and resonated with a lot of people. I felt that if I could achieve that, then some fun and exciting business opportunities would come my way and that’s what happened.

How has your business grown throughout the years? I know you have branched out from the daily email, to books, podcasts, etc. Are there more avenues that you’d like to conquer? How do you keep it fresh for you and the company?

The business has grown and changed a lot over the years. Hungry Girl started out as a daily email and then branched out into books. I had a show on Food Network for a few seasons, and now there’s a Hungry Girl magazine and podcast. I’ve even done some food licensing...I love to keep evolving and changing as the times change. I keep it fresh by maintaining an open mind and keeping up with technology and with what the world wants content wise.

I love that the Hungry Girl brand is about your “passion for food and helping people.” For me, it makes your company accessible and at the same time empowering. Do you speak to groups about growing businesses that (yes, of course) make money, but also help others too?

Thank you! I’ve been on a few panels and have done a little bit of speaking about growing businesses...I love to share what I’ve learned with people. I love helping other entrepreneurs.

Do you have someone you can turn to as a business sounding board? Is it overwhelming the breadth and reach of your company? How do you manage it all?

I am so fortunate that I have an incredible team. I have a great manager and attorneys who are super smart and wonderful sounding boards. In addition, I have a fantastic team at Hungryland — our Hungry Girl HQ. They are all an integral part of the success of my business.

What were your hobbies as a child? Did your business ideas stem from events in your childhood?

As a child, I loved to draw. I also loved to eat. I’m not sure if that’s a hobby but to me it kind of always was! LOL! And I always loved to be creative. I’m not sure if my business ideas stemmed from many events in my childhood but my love and passion for food certainly does.

Were your parents entrepreneurs? Did they help you reach your goals?

My parents are not entrepreneurs. My mom was a fulltime mom and my dad worked in insurance and also managed a painting contracting company. He is super smart. I think my parents helped me reach my goals by giving me the confidence to feel secure and take risks. They were very supportive and very encouraging.

If/when you take a day off, what do you like to do? Is there a certain exercise that you like? And, I must ask,

28 Hidden Hills Magazine | Spring 2019

what is your favorite food? (Mine is obvious and juvenile, but it is what it is...chocolate and pizza!)

When I get some time off, I love to spend it shopping, eating good food, or just watching Dateline and a slew of about a dozen other true crime shows. I exercise several days a week. I walk and hike, and I have a Peloton bike that I love. My favorite food? Probably sushi because I feel like I can indulge in it and still be pretty healthy. But if calories didn’t count and if health weren’t a concern, I pretty much have the desire to eat like a 10-year-old and would likely eat French fries and pizza every day! Luckily, I have ways of making versions of these foods that are a lot healthier.

You mentioned that your dog, Lolly, is a therapy dog. How did you get involved with that?

Lolly is the light of our lives! My husband and I don’t have kids, so we dote on our animals and spend as much time with them as possible. Lolly’s disposition is so wonderful and she is so sweet and calm that I thought she would

make a great therapy dog. Now we visit the long-term care patients at MPTF on a regular basis. It is incredible and one of the things I look most forward to each week!

Is there someone you’d like to sit down and have a long conversation with?

Maybe Lester Holt or Keith Morrison because Dateline is one of my favorite shows! I’m obsessed with reality crime TV. And I secretly want to be a private investigator…

Beyond the beauty of Hidden Hills, what made you move here? What do you like the most about the area?

We lived in Encino for so many years and loved it. But the idea of having more space and more land and living in a gated community was really appealing to us. Hidden Hills is beautiful and doesn’t feel like the rest of Los Angeles. It’s kind of magical! I love how calm it makes me feel.

Lisa’s new book launches March 5th. It’s called “Hungry Girl Simply 6: All Natural Recipes With 6 Ingredients or Less.” I already ordered my copy because I appreciate that she understands we want to cook nourishing meals for ourselves and our families without being overwhelmed by the time and effort.

KING GILLETTE RANCH CALABASAS

A family-friendly, all-inclusive afternoon & evening of the best local food, wine, craft beer, spirits & music! READ

ON>>

There are some guitarists in the world of rock music who, with a single lick played in their signature style, have the ability to transport fans to moments in his or her life that are rich with nostalgia. Their sound, instantly recognizable, rings with the emotional depth of each story that a song might be aiming to tell. Classics like Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer,” or Stevie Nicks’ “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around…” all brought memorably to life—and co-written by— the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Mike Campbell.

Known the breadth of his four-decade career as lead guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Campbell has recently embarked down two new roads as a musician, one wholly unexpected, and the other, a favored project that he has cultivated over the years. As a new, full-fledged member of Fleetwood Mac, Campbell has found himself on yet another whirlwind tour of the world, playing lead guitar parts that are engrained into the minds of most every Fleetwood fan, always mindful of doing justice to each note, striving to honor the body of work while staying true to his own form. The other road, while by design a bit more dusty and rutty, is a band known as The Dirty Knobs.

“The Dirty Knobs is an organic development of a band that started about 15 years ago,” says Campbell. “ These

The Dirty Knobs WITH MIKE CAMPBELL

guys I met, we started messing around in the studio in between Heartbreakers tours. We would book small gigs, y’know, clubs and little theaters now and then.” True to a musician who travels in a world of masterful players, Campbell’s casual reference to the band as “these guys” downplays their stature in the industry. Guitarist Jason Sinay has worked with legends such as Neil Diamond and Jerry

says Campbell. “There’s four or five of them that morphed their way through this smaller band.” Now that life has put him in a new and unexpected direction, The Dirty Knobs is no longer Campbell’s incubator, it’s one of his babies, and he’s set his mind to giving this baby the full attention of a good father. “In the past I always in the back of my mind would think ‘well I’m gonna show this [song] to Tom and hopefully he’ll hear something and write to it,” says Campbell. “Now that I don’t have that outlet anymore, I’m basically on my own, I’m just gonna write for The Dirty Knobs or anyone else that wants to write with me.”

Lee Lewis, bassist Lance Morrison has played with Alanis Morissette and Melissa Etheridge, and drummer Matt Laug, who also played with Morissette as well as Alice Cooper. Together, the sound is a crafted, gritty, driving rock with just a bit of twang. “It’s a little more raw than The Heartbreakers. We don’t have a keyboard. It’s just a four-piece, guitar-based rock band, but it’s become a really great band over the years. We’ve gotten really tight.”

Originally, the quartet was a forum for Campbell to try out new material. “Some of the songs in the Dirty Knobs were woodshedded in little bars and such and evolved to become Heartbreakers songs,”

The band has now reached a critical mass of worthy material and they’ve finally set upon committing their songs to wax. “We have a record that is 95% finished that I am really really proud of,” he says excitedly. “We have a blast. This band is a total joy. It’s fun. Nobody’s in it for the money. And everybody’s in it for the right reasons.”

When describing the songs and the band’s distinct, semi-improvisational style, it is in a way a reflection of how Campbell has come to this point in his career and how he has continued to move forward, at full-tilt, doing what he loves. “Our songs are structured in a way that there’s movement for spontaneity. It’s more guitar improvised here or there and sometimes we don’t know exactly how long the song will go at the end, but that creates room for some real magical things to happen.

ONE OF MIKE CAMPBELL'S NEWEST CHAPTER'S IS A BAND HE'S BEEN JAMMING WITH FOR 15 YEARS. ON MAY 18th, THEY HIT THE HOOTENANNY!

Few classic rock bands have firebranded their own signature vibe that has endured for decades and inspired so many other musicians as The Doors...much of which was delicately hinged upon the otherworldly riffs Robby Krieger.

Krieger is not only a RnR Hall of Fame Guitarist but also has co-written some of the greatest songs in the canon of classic rock. "Light my Fire," "Break on Through," "Riders on the Storm," "L.A. Woman," "People are Strange." to only scratch the surface of his accomplishments. At last year's Hootenanny, Krieger was an epic surprise performer that electrified the crowd. This year, he graciously returns to support The Kevin

ROBBY KRIEGER and friends

Cordasco Foundation, bringing a set of his own surprise musical guests to jam with. Past Krieger and Friends shows have featured legends from the bands Chicago, Rod Stewart, Bon Jovi and Rush, just to name a select few. While there's no way of knowing who will show up at this year's event it would be a safe bet to say that this is a performance that any true fan of great, live rock performances will not want to miss!

ANDREW McMAHON in the WILDERNESS

Singer-songwriter Andrew McMahon was on the cusp of the biggest moment of his career. After touring the world with his band Something Corporate, he had gone his own way for his first solo project, Jack’s Mannequin, and was about to release his first album under that incarnation. That’s when his diagnosis came; acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His options: pursuing prolonged chemotherapy or a stem cell transplant. When his sister Katie was confirmed as a match, Andrew opted for the transplant, which he underwent on August 23, 2005, the same day his solo album Everything in Transit was released. Both the transplant

and the album were a success and 100 days later he was back on stage, at his piano, performing to adoring and supportive fans. Since, McMahon has released multiple albums to both critical and commercial success under the solo moniker of Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. Featuring hits like " Cecilia and the Sattelite ," "High Dive" and " Fire Escape " McMahon has not only headlined his own tours, but has opened for Billy

Joel and played top music festivals including Coachella, Lollapoluza, Austin City Limits and Bottlerock.

At this year's Hootenanny McMahon will perform as a semi-acoustic duo with Zac Clark, a more intimate format under which he has sold out 30 shows nationally.

OVERSTREET

OVERSTREET is an alt-pop-rock experiment hatched from the mind of its creative force, Chord Overstreet, in Los Angeles in 2018. Taking inspiration from contemporary acts like Tame Impala and Foster the People, as well as classic artists like The Police, OVERSTREET combines a unique blend of storytelling songwriting with progressive production elements to create a sound that is both lyrically and sonically compelling. With their laid back, So-Cal party vibe, OVERSTREET is a band best served live.

FRAKER

FRAKER began with two musically talented kids adopted by missionaries who found themselves and each other in Times Square NY vía Craigslist. In the winter of 2018 they would move to Los Angeles, where they discovered their unique sound playing experimental pop mixed with a blend of soul. The sound is raw and fresh yet has an organic, electronic vibe that crosses into many genres.

Creighton Fraker and JV Vidopio knew they had something special and sought other musicians who had the same vision and passion. These accomplished musicians would become an intricate part of the sound and then soon become what has evolved into an act bristling with energy larger than the band itself.

SIR PLEASE

SIR, PLEASE is an LA based indie-rock band, with a psychedelic edge. Their moving lyrics and unique sound create a vibe that resonates with any crowd. Singer Shane Cronin’s powerful vibrato and Marshall Via’s overdriven lead guitar naturally fuse with Michael Leese’s crisp rhythm guitar and the driving grooves of drummer David Kohn and bassist Josh Cronin. The result is a contemporary sound, with hints of old.

SARAH ROGO

SARAH ROGO first picked up a guitar at 13 as a way of performing the songs she’d already written. Growing up, Sarah spent hours listening to music in the local public library, where she discovered a 1991 live album recorded by Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Alone and Acoustic, which changed her life.

“The whole thing is in the key of E and you just know they’re making up the words as they go along, but it totally captivated me,” she enthuses. “That’s the kind of music I wanted to play. I knew the blues had to come from the soul. That’s what made it so magical, what moved me, that authenticity, the mojo, even though I had no idea what those words meant until later. The blues just overwhelmed me.”

AARON BURCH and the BAND of ONE ANOTHER

Now hailing out of Lion City Studios in Ventura CA, AARON BURCH is a songwriter/producer. With a unique blend of folk and modern psychedelia, Aaron pushes the boundaries on stage as he does in the studio. Having worked with several other bands on the Hootenanny line-up in the studio, Aaron’s band will comprised of grammy award winning musicians and friends from recent sessions.

SOMETHING is doing something EXTRAORDINARY YELLOW

INSPIRED BY THEIR HERO, KEVIN, THE CORDASCO FAMILY CARRIES ON THE MOVEMENT THEIR SON AND BROTHER STARTED, TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR TEENS WITH CANCER AND THEIR FAMILIES.

After suffering from a mysterious illness for three months, Kevin Cordasco was diagnosed, at the age of 10, with stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. He fought valiantly with the help of his younger brother, Cade, and his parents, Melodie and Kevin (Dad), for almost seven years before he passed away March 11,

2013. His battle to live and stay positive inspired thousands. And it prompted his parents, a year after his death, to start The Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow, which is “committed to raising awareness and muchneeded funds to benefit [the families and children enduring] childhood cancer.” The Cordascos say that while “The universal color of childhood cancer is gold

. . . there are many variations of the color gold and we accept yellow as one of them. [Yellow has a special meaning to our family.] It is our hope that the many groups supporting childhood cancer will come together and paint the world yellow and gold to raise awareness for the heroes of childhood cancer.” Kevin Cordasco was more than a

hero, he was a beacon for how to live life with joy, hope and the ability to make others better humans, even as his physical body was failing.

When Kevin first learned he had cancer, he asked his doctor (Dr. Rima Jubran) “How much time do I have? Am I going to die?”

She replied, “I don’t see an expiration date.”

Together they fought his cancer, becoming more than just doctor and patient. At one point in his treatment, Kevin emailed Dr. Jubran to ask why they had stopped the chemotherapy. He reminded her that she had promised him they would never stop fighting the disease. She called him back on a Sunday evening. He got off the phone and told his parents, “We have to be at the hospital at 8 a.m. tomorrow. We are starting chemo again.”

Kevin knew every drug he was on and researched everything. He gave his body up to stem cell and bone marrow treatments, along with experimental

procedures, to help not just himself, but also others suffering from cancer. One of the treatments caused him to lose part of the pitch range in his hearing. One afternoon as he sat outside with his father, he said, “I

can’t hear the sprinklers coming on, but I still hear the birds chirping . . .”

Kevin and Melodie Cordasco went from an “average family” working and raising two boys, to a family that spent almost seven years in and out of hospitals. Melodie stopped working so she could spend every day/night at

the hospital with Kevin, while Kevin (Dad) went from home, to work as a real estate agent, to the hospital and back again. Cade went from being the younger brother Kevin taught to swing a bat, to the brother who helped Kevin walk in the end days. The fight to keep Kevin alive took an emotional and financial toll on the family. Something Yellow aims to help families like theirs.

While battling his disease, Kevin taught himself to play the drums and piano. He loved music and danced, he earned his driver’s license, and he gave speeches. He spoke without notes, sharing his hopes for a cure and his aspiration to help others, all with a twinkle in his eyes. His fierce desire to brighten the world he inhabited shone each time he spoke into a microphone, so much so, that Melodie and Kevin (Dad) say that the Foundation thrives because Kevin’s joyous spirit lives on in its mission “to improve the lives of the affected kids and families and to

contribute to the research community to find a cure.”

With all the time he spent in and out of the hospital, Kevin saw others like himself, adolescents, and wanted to do something special for them. During the last year of his life, he raised funds and delivered holiday gifts to teenagers spending the holiday at Children’s Hospital. He made sure the gifts were geared for teenagers--tech toys, gift cards and more. He wanted to recognize them not as children, but as adolescents. Today, The Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow delivers to four hospitals carrying on Kevin’s wishes.

As Kevin (Dad) says, “Kevin’s river flowed . . . yes, at times we had to be proactive and row, but it was Kevin’s river and as his parents we jumped on for the ride, trying to do our best to honor him and other kids like him, because all he and they wanted to do was to be ‘normal’ and to live.”

When the priest came in to give Kevin his last rites, Kevin said, “Thank you.”

The priest replied, “No, Kevin, thank you.”

Thank you, Kevin, for reminding us all how lucky we are to hear the birds sing, to swing a baseball bat, to dance on our beds, and to hug our families close. With the help of your fierce spirit and the Foundation that grew from your life, your parents and brother will continue to work with others so that one day all children will live long, cancerfree lives.

The upcoming Hootenanny at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas on Saturday, May 18, 2019 will donate all proceeds to The Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow. It is an “all-inclusive afternoon and evening event with the best local food, wine, craft beer, spirits & music.” Just as Kevin loved to listen to music, dance and eat, people will come together to do the same thing, all while benefitting children fighting cancer. Kevin would say to his parents, “Life is where I want to be, is it too much to ask?” It isn’t too much to ask. And with a little music, some food and drinks, and in good company, we all can help to raise funds for Something Yellow.

DIRECTIONS

1. In a medium size saute pan melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add in the garlic and shallots and saute until the shallots start appearing translucent, about 2 minutes.

2. Add in the white wine, lemon juice and bring to a simmer. Let the wine simmer fora minute then add in the crab meat. Let the crab meat and wine simmer together until the liquid has evaporated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Once the liquid has evaporated turn off the heat and reserve. About 8 minutes.

OLD BAY BUTTER

LUXWOOD kitchens & flooring

Luxwood Kitchens & Flooring founder Vic Maybalian believes that the first order of business when meeting new clients is to be sure they will feel truly at home. He understands that most clients don't make remodeling decisions on a daily basis. So, his mantra is to take all the time necessary with each client, offering his expertise and knowledge, ensuring that each selection is chosen with ease and confidence.

Anyone walking into Luxwood Kitchens & Flooring will quickly realize this showroom is truly unique. Unlike others, Luxwood displays most

of its engineered flooring in seven-foot tall panels. The result: clients are able to easily visualize the intricate beauty of each floor. "Here it's about experiencing new and exclusive flooring in a setting that facilitates full visual impact from which clients can make comfortable decisions." In addition to its exclusive wood flooring, Luxwood offers full customization capabilities; most of its custom flooring is produced in any color or design ready for delivery within two weeks.

This ease of shopping and meeting clients’ exact requirements are a theme throughout Luxwood.

Just as with flooring, Luxwood features full displays of custom and semi-custom American Cabinetry, a line of luxury Italian-made cabinetry, with all the design and functional elements offered by high-end west side showrooms.

"Our cabinetry is fully customizable, with luxuries such as walnut interiors, high-end veneered doors, European rollout pantries and automated ‘touchless’ drawers." All Luxwood cabinetry is available with 3D photorealistic renderings, so there is no guesswork in designing your dream kitchen.

Other products offered are quartz and porcelain countertops, custom doors

and windows, and door and cabinet hardware,

together with full installation of everything Luxwood sells.

"When we planned our showroom, we set out to be open and inviting and present various elements in one place to help our clients envision all their possibilities."

"The only thing we don't have," Vic says with a big smile, "is exorbitant and high prices!"

PURE Builders

When master chefs work to create something of perfection, they are always involved from beginning to end starting with the history of each ingredient. Where did it come from? How was it grown? Is it the peak season to use this? Eli Kaspi, founder of Calabasas-based Pure Builders Inc., approaches projects the very same way. Kaspi is hands-on when a project takes root to ensure it grows to perfection.

Pure Builders Inc. opened its doors in 1998. The founders’ own roots in the design/build world run deep. Kaspi grew up in a family of builders and established himself as a wellknown and respected kitchen designer prior to founding Pure Builders Inc. Years of experience with designing enabled Kaspi to pull together an incredible network of architects, designers, permit and zoning specialists, and suppliers. Pure Builders Inc. is consistently highly rated by consumers and is insured, bonded and licensed by the California Contractors State License Board. Whether a given project is a remodel or a new build—each has its own set of unique challenges— Kaspi’s ultimate goal is to provide an end product far surpassing his clientele’s expectations. As the father of two sons and long-time Calabasas resident, Kaspi puts himself in the shoes of every client wanting to create spaces for their family that resonate with who they are and how they live. “It’s important to consider a project from every angle, in ways that can enhance the client’s perspective,” says Kaspi. “Whether it’s a remodel or a new build, the process is always a journey. My ultimate goal is to get clients to consider fresh ideas before that journey starts— to look into improvements they may not have considered.”

In addition to Kaspi’s primary involvement at the design and concept phase, his experience allows

him to give guidance and advice to his clientele on relevant building trends; he strategizes all facets of the project, including choosing the specific subcontractors who will be the perfect fit for the job at hand as well as assisting with financial guidance.

New builds are a balanced part of Pure Builders’ portfolio. Kaspi also thrives on the challenges and energy of a good remodel. “Remodels are challenging because you are not simply working

with a blank canvas,” Kaspi explains. “For a remodel project, it’s a nuanced art to update and personalize the space while going with the flow of the ideas found within the existing home.”

With Kaspi’s keen eye for detail, prospective clients will appreciate his vast knowledge of current style trends and the implementation of a client’s dreams from the thought process all the way through to fruition.

WDC Kitchen & Bath Center

In the whirlwind of decisions that come with renovating or building a home, one of the the more exciting aspects can be shopping for and choosing the appliances and fixtures. After all, these are the latest and greatest creations that help to finish the home, making it modern, functional, efficient and convenient. Yet, with so many beautiful and innovative designs on the market today, there is sometimes the potential for a little head-spinning when taking it all in. Fortunately, there are showrooms like WDC Kitchen & Bath Center that not only showcase

the best of the best that’s out there, but also institute a philosophy that every team member should be steeped in the knowledge and experience that enables each customer to shop with complete confidence.

Founded in 1981 under the name of Warehouse Discount Center, WDC originally began as a 2,000 sq ft. appliance showroom in Agoura Hills, CA. Today WDC operates five luxurious showrooms throughout Southern California, including its 30,000 square foot flagship store in Agoura Hills, featuring interactive kitchen displays, appliances, outdoor

barbeques, plumbing fixtures and a few locations that have recently added mattresses to their assortment.

As a second generation, family owned and operated enterprise; WDC understands the importance of family and have made it a cornerstone to their business. “We’ve cultivated an environment of friendliness and helpfulness not only for our customers, but our employees as well,” says John Freitas, VP of Sales. “It is a legacy we are very proud of, and it is our mission to provide all who walk through our doors with the best price, quality and overall experience.” And as the retail

landscape continues to change, WDC continues to evolve with it, meeting the new expectations of their clients. “We believe in hiring professionals and training them into experts,” says John Freitas, VP of Sales. “Our entire staff is vigorously trained by manufacturer professionals to ensure that we remain a valuable resource to our customers throughout their new build or remodel. In fact, the staff has an average of 17 years’ experience in their field.”

The family’s long-standing and direct relationship with each product manufacturer allows WDC to be well informed of all the latest styles and product features available in the Kitchen & Bath industry. Not just styles and features of today but those that will be available in years to come. Each of their five showrooms is frequently updated using current fashion trends and styles designed by local artisans and interior designers. The needs and desires of the local communities to which WDC belongs is the key influence in their business today. As part of their relationshipbuilding with customers, WDC strives to educate them before, during and after a sale to ensure

that customers feel comfortable with their purchase even after their appliance is installed. A perfect example is WDC’s Kitchen Mastery Series, these cooking demonstrations bring appliance manufacturers and WDC customers together to discuss the benefits and features of the latest kitchen appliances. These demonstrations afford a great opportunity for customers to see the appliance in action, learn how to cook healthier and smarter, get great recipes, provide feedback to the manufacturer on their products, and feel more confident about their new purchase.

I’ve been fascinated with VINTAGE TRUCKS for ages. And for a very different reason than with cars in general.

Trucks have pretty much always been about functionality and purposeful diversity,

whereas cars have been about transportation. But it’s the multitude of diversity that fascinates me.

When trucks initially hit the scene, there were those who needed to have a vehicle that transported something more than just people. Sheep, Boxes, Fruit, whatever. So, designing a

of the LIFE

VINTAGE TRUCK

IS JUST BEGINNING

purposeful vehicle to fit your needs generated a virtual plethora of ideas in individuals who modified their cars. People were ripping Model As and Ts apart and adding flatbeds, boxes, towing arms and anything else that would help them become more efficient. And thus...the TRUCK was born.

Over the years, manufacturers got in the game and started creating multi-purpose vehicles to help. “What do you do for a guy who has to carry logs? Or for a dude who has to transport tomatoes and corn? Or how about barrels of whisky?” The possibilities were endless and so were the designs.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY FIREBALL TIM LAWRENCE

According to David Neel at The Murphy Auto Museum where these trucks call home, “Chevrolet trucks received a complete redesign starting with the 1960 model year. Lower step-in height and torsion bar front suspension meant a more civilized truck with a smooth ride and car-like manners.” And over the years, the idea of having functionality and good drivability became a major desire among buyers.

But the three trucks you see here range from 1948-1963. And although they are all trucks, their functionality is different. The early ’48 Dodge could carry boxes and furniture and transform into a flatbed in probably less than two minutes. It was a true pit bull of service. The blue ’62 Chevy C10 with the Camper Shell meant it was about family trips, surfing, privacy and overnight stays. The red step-side ’63 C10 was a farmer’s workhorse. Hay,

barrels and anything that needed to stay put, yet easily accessible.

Design themes for the trucks have evolved greatly over the years as well. Originally, the fenders floated over the tire and the motor was central in its own compartment. As the years went on, the fenders grew and housed the tires in a variety of shapes. In 1948 (as in the truck you see here), the engine compartment was still separate, higher and its own design element. But by the 60’s, the engine compartments and the fenders

merged to become one shape like the C10s. Truck designs varied in color, shape, purpose and style, but the functionality factor remained. That is...until recently, where trucks are now literally a combination of work, style...and luxury.

As a car guy, I get to see thousands of cool cars yearly and get to drive many of them. And through this, I also get to appreciate design trends, changes, codas and themed languages. Kind of like a kid in a candy store. A C10 is a C10...until it’s a red and

white step-side. Now, I’m drooling.

But above and beyond the design, the motors also gave these vehicles different personalities. The Blue ’62 here has the standard 235 cubic inch straight six engine with a single barrel carburetor and a three-speed manual transmission. It has a rare factory searchlight option (driver side mounted) and with just over 90,000 original miles. That’s a low mileage truck!

The red ’63 Chevrolet C10 was bought new in Hickory, Mississippi and was put to work by the first owner who used it to tow a snow cone machine trailer in the summer months of the hot and humid South. It later passed to the son who used it as a daily driver to his masonry business. Later, the original owner’s grandson used it in parades and civic functions. In 2005, David at the Murphy bought it and had it shipped to its new home here at the Museum.

INTERIOR ON THIS '48 EVOKES A SENSE OF COMFY HOMINESS, FULLY PREPARED TO DO THE JOB NO MATTER WHAT IS THE STANCE, THE REAR WAS FULLY MODULAR AND PREPARED FOR JUST ABOUT ANYTHING. BUT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE DESIGN, THE MOTORS ALSO GAVE THESE VEHICLES DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES.

CLOCKWISE: SPOTLIGHT ON THE C10 WAS A SEMIAFFORDABLE OPTION AND GREAT FOR EARLY MORNING FARMING, THE TRUCK AT IT'S HOME IN THE MURPHY AUTO MUSEUM, BUILT SOLID AND TOUGH, THE C10'S GLORY CAME FROM IT'S ABILITY TO ADAPT TO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING.

That was the first time the truck had ever left Newton County, Mississippi.

The 1963 model year also brought a few mechanical changes to the Chevrolet truck line, called "The New Reliables" by GM's marketing department. Gone was the torsion bar front suspension in favor of coil springs (less cost), and the 235 cubic inch standard six was replaced with a more efficient and powerful 230 cubic inch six-cylinder engine.

I could go on for days, but the personalities of these trucks are as diverse as we are. And although I have seen literally hundreds of thousands of these vintage beauties, there are thousands more hidden in the barns, storehouses and garages of America waiting to be restored and put back on the road. Seems like America has turned into one big garage sale and I for one am pretty dang excited about it.

I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS, BUT THE PERSONALITIES OF THESE TRUCKS ARE AS DIVERSE AS WE ARE.

RANCHO

Valencia RESORT & SPA :

Southern Californians are very fortunate to have within driving distance top tier luxury hotels and resorts that embody the best the Golden State has to offer and draw discerning guests from around the world. And despite the old saying “you can’t have it all,” Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa (ranchovalencia.com)--the only property in Southern California in the prestigious international Relais & Châteaux group--comes awfully close.

The many awards on Rancho Valencia’s mantle include the Forbes Five-Star Resort,” “Forbes Five-Star Spa,” the AAA Five-Diamond award and, as of late February, top spots on U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Best Hotel Rankings as No. 1 Best Resort and Best Hotel in California, fifth best resort in the U.S, ninth best

U.S. hotel ranking, and a “Gold Badge” for its placing among the top ten percent of all ranked hotels in the United States. However, what’s most important is that those accolades add up to an experience balancing luxury with something truly meaningful for guests.

Name dropping aside, picky travelers who could go anywhere in the world will want to know what’s in it (that is, a stay-cation at the property) for them. As it turns out, plenty of perks set it apart from other resorts in the “five-star” club. Better still, two membership options (Rancho Valencia Spa Membership and the Rancho Valencia Tennis Membership) and vacation home real estate offerings can enable individuals and families to make this top tier resort a more permanent part of their lifestyle.

The three-decade old resort stays fresh and maintains its “world class” status with a multitude of exclusive features.

HAUTE HIDEAWAY

Rancho Santa Fe’s Mediterranean architecture, clean interior design, and 45 acres of opulent landscaping set the stage for a semi-secluded island-style getaway (even though it’s just minutes from La Jolla, Del Mar and San Diego). Although the Resort celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, it has benefitted immensely from a relatively recent $30 million renovation of the room interiors, meeting space, and fitness areas.

The 49 casitas and a dozen villas are nicely outfitted with fresh, beach-house ready furnishings, 600-threadcount linens, down bedding, spacious hand-painted tile and glass bathrooms, Illy Cafe Espresso machines,

nightly turndown service, and complimentary freshpressed orange juice each morning. Guest rooms also include bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and oversized steam showers, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and private patios outfitted with whirlpools. The spa areas are just as alluring, with crisp cabanas and patio furnishings punched up with colorful cushions, ceramics, and playfully modern light fixtures constructed out of natural materials like straw.

The elegance of the surroundings extends to what one cannot see, thanks to a very detailed and complete sustainability program. While the remodel and periodic improvements to the interiors implement various green design principles and energy-efficient fixtures, and

Spring 2019 | Hidden Hills Magazine 85

landscaping is accomplished with built-in water preservation, other practices embody Southern California’s leadership in smart, environmentally sound living. The Resort’s Green Committee ensures environmental initiatives are in place and executed, from the maintenance of a wild herb garden and procurement of locally sourced and organic foods, to having natural and organic skin care products in the spa, kitchen composting, recycling and waste management, and use of non-toxic, and biodegradable cleaning products.

BODY, MIND & SOUL

While the expansive fitness and outdoor offerings at the property have kept business quite healthy, a shot of adrenaline feature in the form of its renowned Porsche Test Drive Program has drawn guests or kept them coming back. However, the recently launched Pinarello Test Drive Program brings the domains of fitness and precision machinery together. Developed by Cicli Pinarello, it is designed for cyclists of varying fitness levels interested in driving some of the world’s best two-wheeled road machines against the Pacific oceanfront backdrop.

Tennis fans, meanwhile, up their game with an enhanced tennis program led by Tennis Director and two-time U.S. Open Champion Robin White along with a team of USPTA- and USPTR-certified tennis professional instructors. Additionally, two new red “ClayTech” tennis courts promise an improved game, better techniques, stability, and overall fun on the courts. Year-round tennis memberships are also available, as is the Resort’s Five-Star Junior Tennis program, created by Robin White and specially designed for aspiring tennis players from “Little Twinklers” (ages 4-6) to competitive players in their teens.

As a variety of fitness endeavors and wellness spa treatments make up a major component of Rancho Valencia’s guest experience, management is going above and beyond the call with its Wellness Collective “Epigenetics” program. Curated through a partnership with the Lifewellness Institute, this customizable offering is built out of specialized retreat activities, spa treatments, and nutritional coaching focused on the wellness goals of different guests at every age. The workshop program kicks off in April with the “Inflammatory Lifestyle” protocol (helping people cut their sugar intake), and continues with others covering sports medicine and adolescent mental health.

THE RECENTLY LAUNCHED PINARELLO TEST DRIVE PROGRAM BRINGS THE DOMAINS OF FITNESS AND PRECISION MACHINERY TOGETHER.

The Spa at Rancho Valencia, under the direction of Kristi Dickinson, is one of only two spas in the U.S. to implement a selection of therapies addressing “somatotypes,” or different body constitutions (ecto, endo-, or meso-), determinedly an Elemental Wellness quiz. The results, in turn, give way to a customized spa experience combining ancient modalities and modern science to remedy and relieve ailments and biochemical issues. The spa also collaborates with the skincare and wellness brand [comfort zone] for its new “Sacred Nature” and “Aromasoul” treatments, and offers acupuncture sessions every Wednesday, along with yoga classes, spin classes, 18 tennis courts, a fitness center, and easy access to personal trainers and hikes at the Torrey Pines State Reserve.

The complex is comprehensive, with its adultsonly spa pool, hydrotherapy circuit, saunas, and steam rooms. While signature facials and massages are lavish, they also address a variety of concerns, from anti-aging to muscle relief. Noteworthy selections include “Wellbeing

SENSES & SENSIBILITY

Rancho Valencia has much to offer couples bringing their children (such as a generous activity pack

as well as horseback riding, hiking, surfing lessons, and more) and pets, ensuring a troublefree getaway that’s anything but boring. Throughout the year, it offers badminton, bocce ball, croquet, basketball, paddleball, ping-pong, and complimentary bicycle usage in addition to the aforementioned award-winning tennis program. Kids get their own VIP treatment, beginning with a backpack full of goodies and a customized “welcome” chocolate chip cookie served with milk. Cool-down activities also abound, including Chess, Yahtzee, Bingo, Backgammon, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit Family Edition, decks of cards, and puzzles.

More grown-up amenities and services, meanwhile, make the process of planning customized romantic getaways and even “babymoon” packages with specially devised prenatal spa treatments just as easy and unforgettable as the general wellness offerings. When it comes to well-planned downtime, the spa effectively translates Southern California’s bounty into a relaxing garden of delights, from freshsqueezed vegetable and fruit juices to a fine assortment of beginning and advanced classes in the yoga pavilion, Pilates studio, and pool. Modalities run the gamut from TRX-Tennis combo classes to traditional and specialized spin,

THIS ISSUE, SPANKY DEDICATES HIS PET PICS TO SHELTER ANIMALS WHO WANT TO BE PETS

They sit in kennels, not far from here, waiting for their "forever home." It's possible that all of them thought they had already found that. Yet for whatever reason or circumstance, they sit and wait, wondering "what happened to those humans who used to care for me" and "who is going to care for me now."

At press time, each of these furry friends were on the instagram of the Agoura Animal Care Center. Each has a story. Some are bonded pairs hoping to stay together. Some never get picked to meet a potential family.

We hope, if you are reading this, you or someone you know may need a new friend. Because adopting a pet can truly be life changing!
