Spring holds a special place in my heart, particularly after the recent rainfall we have been fortunate to experience. The hills adorned in vibrant greenery make the drive along the 101 truly enchanting, especially when reaching the top of the grade heading south into San Luis. It’s a breathtaking sight that serves as a constant reminder of the beauty we get to call home.

Living on the Central Coast allows us to savor the best of what California has to offer. We take joy in the abundance of fresh produce straight from local farmers, enabling us to align our meals with the seasons and provide our children with a lifestyle I never knew growing up. Last month, I experimented with baking my first loaf of bread using local ingredients. To my delight, it turned out great—my family loved it, at least. As with any baking endeavor, I acknowledge that each loaf following will only improve with time and experience.

Every issue of Central Coast Living brings you home decor, kitchen essentials, sustainable living, and the diverse world of local artists and musicians. In this edition, we delve into the impact of adding simple plants to enhance mental health and wellness in your home or business. Our own home stands as a testament to this, adorned with greenery everywhere, from our towering 12-foot fig tree to the various Pothos plants cascading over cabinets and armoires. I firmly believe that one can never have too many plants, and passing on the joy of caring for them to my boys warms my heart. Their excitement when a new leaf appears is truly heartwarming.

Additionally, we explore building a timeless collection of serveware that you can gather and pass down through generations. Each piece within your collection not only acts as a vessel for culinary delights but also plays a role in crafting lasting memories around the table and elevates your dining experiences.

“Crafting a home is an art of the heart, where every choice and corner reflects the masterpiece of your unique soul. With the arrival of spring, let the joy of refreshment bloom in every nook and cranny, like a garden of personalization. Build a sanctuary where every choice is a petal of your essence, creating a haven that whispers the story of you, a love letter in every room.”

Moving beyond the realm of home, we had the pleasure of meeting the teams behind local liquid gold—olive oil from Groves on 41, Pasolivo, and Tiber Canyon. They provide insights into the health benefits of olive oil and explain why incorporating it into our meals and daily routines is beneficial for everyone.

Our region is a treasure trove of talent, and this issue spotlights three local artists whose contributions, from public murals to art collectives, have played a pivotal role in beautifying San Luis Obispo. Their stories are sure to inspire you to pursue what you love.

With every edition, we strive to bring inspiration into your lives, encouraging a fresh perspective and fostering gratitude for the unique world we call home. May this Spring fill your days with joy, creativity, and a renewed appreciation for the community we share.

As you embark on your own creative endeavors, we invite you to share your inspirations and contributions, making a positive difference in our community. Together, we can create a world we love and can proudly pass on to our littles for generations to come.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Central Coast Living.

We asked our team:

What do you enjoy most about springtime on the Central Coast, and where is your preferred spot to savor the season?

Camille DeVaul, Paso Robles

Finally, feeling the warm sunshine is my favorite part of Spring here on the Central Coast. It is also the prettiest, with the green grass and wildflowers popping up everywhere. I love to either soak in the sun in the back courtyard of Guiseppes Italian Restaurant in Downtown SLO or by taking a walk around Downtown Paso Robles with my dogs.

Ellie Baisch, San Luis Obispo

Springtime on the Central Coast brings a colorful landscape, longer daylight, and warmer temperatures. I love to enjoy this time of year surfing at a beach or at the top of Bishops Peak because you can see the ocean contrasting the green hills on a clear day.

Cami Martin, Templeton

The weather in the Springtime on the Central Coast is the best, with just the right amount of sunshine! I would say my preferred spot would be on my front porch in the early morning as the sun is coming up, enjoying a nice warm cup of coffee.

Neil Schumaker, Paso Robles

I enjoy our outdoor events on the Central Coast, so during Spring, it is nice to see all the live music events returning. The Concerts in the Park in Paso are a great way to enjoy some drinks and have some fun, but my favorite venue to see a show is Vina Robles.

John Nygaard, Atascadero

I enjoy seeing the greenery and wildflowers, especially at Montaña de Oro State Park.

Kaylie Carafelli, Camarillo

Every Spring Break, my husband and I have a family tradition of visiting one of our favorite staycation spots, Palm Springs, with our daughters. We basically live by the pool all day since the weather is perfect— sunny but not too hot yet. I am so grateful to live in such a stunning area where every climate is so easily accessible, from radiant deserts to snowy mountains and breezy beaches.

Anthony Akins, Atascadero

In Spring, I do a lot more hiking in North County. I grab my dogs and head to three bridges more often than not. However, when the sky is clear and the lighting is proper, I grab my camera and head out to a spot past Santa Margarita. There are some hiking trails out there with amazing views of wildlife and, if you go at the right time, bright, colorful patches of flowers.

Dana McGraw, Paso Robles

Baseball is my favorite thing about Spring! I love watching my son play for Paso Robles High School, and going to Cal Poly games! However, this year, I set a goal to hike 24 local trails, so I am excited to see the beauty all over SLO County this Spring!

Christianna Marks, San Luis Obsipo

I love when all the flowers start to bloom, it makes all my walks to and from downtown SLO really beautiful. Shout out to everyone who’s planted so many cool plants.

Michael Chaldu, Lompoc

What I like most is when the Daylight Savings Time kicks in, and it stays light out longer. My favorite place to go is Pismo Beach, where you can go to the beach and pier, or just around town to check out the shops or the restaurants.

Christie Coyes, San Luis Obipso

Springtime, to me, is when nature wakes up and comes alive. The air smells fresh, and flowers start blooming. Whether I’m out in my yard or out on a nature photo shoot, it’s a great time to be outside. Spring has a lot to offer.

Jen Rodman, Atascadero

I look forward to Springtime on the Central Coast to show the beauty of our area with bright green hillsides, California Poppies, Purple Lupin and Yellow Mustardseed. A sunny drive to the Carrizo Plains attracts visitors from all over to see the display of a wildflower Super Bloom after the rains. We have it all here, from beautiful beaches to the countryside.

Purifying the Air & Boosting Oxygen Levels

Indoor plants are natural air purifiers, playing a vital role in improving air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen. Living on the Central Coast, where the fresh coastal breeze is prevalent, we can complement this natural freshness by introducing air-purifying plants into our homes. Studies conducted by NASA have identified several common indoor plants, such as spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) and snake plants (Sansevieria trifasciata), as effective in removing toxins like formaldehyde and benzene from the air. Cleaner air can have a direct impact on cognitive function and overall mental well-being, fostering a healthier indoor environment.

Stress Reduction & Anxiety Alleviation

Numerous studies have explored the stress-reducing benefits of indoor plants. A research study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology found that interacting with indoor plants, such as touching their leaves or simply gazing at them, can lead to physiological and psychological relaxation. The presence of plants has also been associated with lower levels of stress, anxiety, and fatigue, providing a natural and cost-effective way to manage the pressures of daily life.

Enhanced Concentration & Productivity

In addition to stress reduction, indoor plants have been linked to improved concentration and productivity. A study conducted by the University of Exeter found that introducing plants to an office environment increased employee productivity by 15 percent. Anyone working from home or in an office can harness the calming effect of greenery and the connection to nature to enhance focus and cognitive function, making indoor plants a valuable addition to workspaces and study areas.

Positive Impact on Mood & Creativity

Indoor plants have the power to uplift mood and stimulate creativity, complementing the natural beauty of the Central Coast. A study from the University of Texas demonstrated that the presence of plants in the home environment contributes to a higher level of emotional well-being. Furthermore, exposure to natural elements, even in the form of indoor plants, has been associated with increased creativity and problem-solving skills. We can create a visually pleasing and stimulating atmosphere by incorporating a variety of plants into our living and working spaces.

Choosing the Right Plant

Selecting the right indoor plants involves considering factors such as the climate, light conditions, and humidity.

Here are some popular and well-suited choices:

Monstera: Monstera deliciosa, commonly known as the Swiss cheese plant, is characterized by its large, glossy, and perforated leaves, giving it a unique tropical appearance.

Care: Thrives in indirect sunlight; water when the top inch of soil is dry; prefers well-draining soil; can tolerate lower light conditions but may grow slower.

Scindapsus pictus ‘Trebie’: Also known as satin pothos, this trailing vine plant features heart-shaped leaves with a satin-like texture and silver variegation.

Care: Prefers bright, indirect light; allow the soil to dry out between waterings; adaptable to various light conditions but may lose variegation in lower light.

Ficus elastica variegata: Variegated rubber plant is a popular choice for its striking green and cream-colored leaves and upright growth habit.

Care: Thrives in bright, indirect light; water when the top inch of soil is dry; well-draining soil is essential; can adapt to lower light conditions.

Ficus lyrata: Fiddle leaf fig is known for its large, violinshaped leaves and is a popular choice for creating a bold focal point in interior spaces.

Care: Requires bright, indirect light; water when the top inch of soil is dry; prefers consistent humidity; avoid sudden changes in light or temperature.

Pothos: Epipremnum aureum, or devil’s ivy, is a versatile and easy-to-care-for trailing plant with heart-shaped, variegated leaves.

Care: Thrives in a variety of light conditions, including low light; allow the soil to dry between waterings; tolerant of occasional neglect.

Philodendron scandens: Heartleaf philodendron is a popular vining plant with heart-shaped, glossy green leaves, making it a classic choice for hanging baskets or climbing.

Care: Adapts well to low light conditions; water when the top inch of soil is dry; can tolerate occasional drought; trim leggy vines for bushier growth.

Aloe Vera: A succulent with fleshy, spiky leaves containing a soothing gel, aloe vera is known for its medicinal properties and easy-care nature.

Care: Requires bright, indirect sunlight; well-draining soil; water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out between waterings; resilient and drought-tolerant.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae): With large, banana-like leaves, the bird of paradise adds a tropical touch to indoor spaces and is known for its impressive, architectural growth.

Care: Prefers bright, indirect light; water when the top inch of soil is dry; benefit from regular misting; needs space for proper growth; can tolerate lower light conditions.

Sansevieria trifasciata: Snake plant known as mother-inlaw’s tongue or sansevieria, the snake plant is a hardy indoor favorite, featuring upright, sword-shaped leaves with green hues and distinctive variegated patterns. Its resilience and air-purifying qualities make it a popular choice.

Care: Adaptable to various light conditions, from low to bright, indirect light. Will tolerate low light but may exhibit slower growth. Allow the soil to thoroughly dry between waterings. Snake plants are drought-tolerant and can withstand periods of neglect.

Nurturing Well-Being Through Plant Care

The act of caring for indoor plants also plays a role in promoting mental wellness. Taking on the responsibility of watering, pruning, and tending to plants fosters a sense of purpose and accomplishment, aligning with the mindful and laid-back lifestyle often associated with coastal living. Through the thoughtful selection and attentive care of indoor plants tailored to our specific climate, we not only craft visually pleasing spaces but also foster a profound sense of purpose and mindfulness. Once you have carefully curated your home office by addressing key aspects such as furniture, organization, lighting, and technology, the next crucial step is to assemble these elements into a cohesive and functional workspace. Crafting the perfect home office may take some time, so it’s essential to establish a list of priorities and set a realistic timeline that aligns with your schedule.

Start by prioritizing the most critical elements based on your specific needs and work habits. For instance, if a comfortable chair is paramount for long work hours, prioritize that aspect before moving on to other details. Organizational solutions should cater to your workflow, and lighting adjustments should be made considering both functionality and ambiance.

Setting a timeline helps manage the project effectively, ensuring that the integration of these components doesn’t disrupt your work routine. Allocate time for each task, whether it’s assembling furniture, organizing documents, adjusting lighting, or setting up technology. This systematic approach not only ensures a smoother transition but also allows you to appreciate the incremental improvements in your workspace.

Striking a balance between functionality and aesthetics remains the overarching goal. Art of Hosting at home

In a world that often spins at an alarming pace, there’s a certain magic in the simple act of bringing people together under your own roof. The joy of hosting at home transcends the ordinary, turning a gathering into a canvas painted with laughter, camaraderie, and shared memories. As the warm embrace of familiarity wraps around you, hosting becomes not just an event but an art—a delicate dance that weaves connection and fosters a sense of community.

At the heart of hosting lies the desire to create an atmosphere where friends and family feel not only welcomed but cherished. It’s about crafting an experience that lingers in the minds of your guests, a mosaic of moments that outlast the evening. And so, the journey begins with thoughtful planning, an orchestra of details that transforms an ordinary gathering into an unforgettable affair.

Preparing Your Home

First and foremost, consider the ambiance—a subtle symphony that sets the mood. Whether it’s a casual backyard gettogether or a formal dinner, lighting plays a pivotal role. Opt for soft, warm lights that envelop the space in a cozy embrace. Candles, fairy lights, or even a crackling fireplace can infuse the room with an enchanting glow, creating an intimate backdrop for conversation and connection.

Home
Central Coast living | 35

Ambiance

Entertainment, too, plays a vital role. A carefully curated playlist can be the invisible thread weaving through conversations, enhancing the mood and fostering a sense of togetherness. Choose music that resonates with the vibe you wish to create—be it a laid-back acoustic melody or upbeat tunes that encourage laughter and movement. a few board games, or even a cozy corner for impromptu storytelling can elevate the evening. The goal is not to overwhelm but to offer pockets of joy that guests can dip into at their leisure, ensuring a seamless flow of conversation and laughter.

Seating Options

Seating arrangements, though seemingly mundane, contribute significantly to the overall vibe. Foster a sense of inclusivity by arranging seating in a way that encourages interaction. An eclectic mix of seating options, from plush sofas to cushioned floor spaces, invites guests to choose their comfort, fostering a relaxed, convivial atmosphere.

Connections

Engagement becomes the heartbeat of the evening. It’s not merely about exchanging pleasantries but about delving into the stories that shape each person in the room. A welltimed question can unveil layers of experiences, forging connections that go beyond the surface. Share the narratives of your own journey, creating a reciprocal exchange that transforms strangers into companions and friends. It’s not about forced interactions but about creating spaces where people feel comfortable being themselves.

Menu Planning

The culinary aspect of hosting is akin to curating a culinary masterpiece. The menu becomes a reflection of your hospitality, a medley of flavors that tantalize the taste buds and leave a lasting impression. It need not be extravagant; simplicity often reigns supreme. Consider incorporating personal touches—a family recipe, a favorite dish, or perhaps a creative twist on a classic. The art of hosting lies not in the grandeur, but in the authenticity of the experience.

Outdoor Spaces

For those fortunate enough to have outdoor spaces, nature can be a gracious co-host. Whether it’s a garden, a balcony, or a simple patio, embrace the natural elements. Weather permitting, let the fresh air and ambient sounds of nature become part of the backdrop. Outdoor gatherings have a unique charm, connecting guests to the beauty of the surroundings.

Creating Moments

In the tapestry of hosting, it’s the unexpected moments that often become the most cherished. A spontaneous dance, a shared laugh, or a heartfelt conversation in the quiet corners of your home—these are the threads that weave a lasting memory. So, as you open your doors and hearts, remember that the true art of hosting lies not in perfection but in the imperfect beauty of shared experiences, creating moments that linger long after the last guest has departed.

Through selection, playful experimentation with combinations, and exploration of sources, you can forge a collection that mirrors your unique style and endures the passage of time. Each piece within it not only serves as a vessel for culinary delights but also contributes to the creation of enduring memories around the table.

Essential items

Classic Dinnerware: To embark on the creation of a timeless serving ware collection, a foundation of classic dinnerware is indispensable. Begin your assortment with a set of meticulously crafted dinner plates, salad plates, and soup bowls. Opting for neutral hues like pristine white or subtle ivory not only imparts a sense of timeless sophistication but also grants unparalleled versatility. These neutral tones seamlessly blend with various table linens and decorative accents, allowing you to effortlessly adapt your table settings to different occasions.

Versatile Platters: Invest in a selection of versatile platters, each presenting a canvas for culinary artistry. Choose from a repertoire of shapes and sizes, including oval, rectangular, and round platters. These serve as elegant platforms for showcasing appetizers, main courses, or indulgent desserts. Opt for platters crafted from high-quality materials such as porcelain or ceramic, ensuring not only durability but also a touch of refined elegance. This selection of platters not only amplifies the visual appeal of your table but also provides functional flexibility for various serving needs.

Statement Serving Bowls: For an added layer of personality in your serving ware collection, incorporate statement serving bowls. Ranging from generously sized salad bowls to more intimate condiment bowls, these pieces allow you to express your individual style. Consider introducing a mix of textures or patterns, creating visual interest while maintaining a harmonious relationship with your existing dinnerware. These distinctive serving bowls not only contribute to the aesthetic charm of your table setting but also become focal points that spark conversation and intrigue among your guests.

Specialized Serveware: Enhance the uniqueness of your collection by including specialized serveware tailored to specific occasions or cuisines. Cheese boards, cake stands, and sushi plates are among the eclectic options that add a touch of personalization and flair. These specialized pieces not only serve their functional purpose but also act as conversation starters, inviting guests to appreciate the thoughtful curation of your collection. Infusing diversity into your serving ware ensures that each gathering is a unique and memorable experience.

Drinkware Accessories: Complete the well-rounded character of your serving ware collection with a selection of drinkware accessories. Elegant wine glasses, champagne flutes, and whiskey tumblers add a touch of sophistication to any beverage service. These items not only complement your dinnerware but also contribute to the overall ambiance, enhancing the enjoyment of your favorite drinks. The inclusion of drinkware accessories ensures that your collection is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and versatile for various dining scenarios.

Mix & Match

Color Palette: Stick to a carefully curated spectrum to ensure a cohesive and unified look that speaks to the elegance of timeless design. Neutrals, such as the classic white, sophisticated beige, and soft pastels, lay the foundation for a palette that transcends trends and seasons. These timeless hues not only exude understated sophistication but also provide a versatile canvas, allowing you to effortlessly pair your serving ware with various table linens and decorative elements.

To infuse a touch of vibrancy and interest, consider introducing pops of color strategically. Accent pieces, adorned

with subtle bursts of color, serve as focal points that catch the eye without overpowering the overall aesthetic. This intentional use of color enhances the visual appeal of your table setting, creating a captivating tableau that invites guests to appreciate the nuanced details of your thoughtfully curated collection.

Material Harmony: While classic options like porcelain and ceramic provide a timeless allure, consider incorporating elements of wood or glass for added texture and variety. The juxtaposition of materials adds an element of interest, breaking away from monotony and infusing the collection with a touch of modernity.

To ensure a unified look, pay careful attention to how materials complement each other. The coexistence of porcelain, known for its delicate beauty, with the rustic charm of wood or the sleek sophistication of glass creates a dynamic and balanced presentation. This material harmony not only elevates the aesthetic appeal of your collection but also speaks to the thoughtful curation that defines a truly timeless ensemble.

Pattern Play: Opt for a dominant pattern that sets the tone for your collection, whether it be delicate florals, geometric motifs, or intricate designs. The art lies in complementing this dominant pattern with simpler, coordinating pieces that create a cohesive visual narrative.

Striking this delicate balance between bold patterns and understated designs is a surefire way to add visual interest without overwhelming the table. The interplay of textures and patterns not only enriches the overall aesthetic but also provides a nuanced layer of sophistication. The result is a table setting that tells a story through the careful orchestration of patterns, capturing the essence of timeless elegance and thoughtful design.

Eating with the Season

Blossoming Flavors

A celebration of freshness, taste & vitamins

As the vibrant hues of spring begin to grace our surroundings, it's an opportune moment to savor the wealth of fresh produce that the season bestows upon us. From luscious strawberries to crunchy asparagus and aromatic herbs, the spring harvest presents a medley of delectable ingredients brimming with both flavor and nourishment. Embracing seasonal eating not only elevates the taste of your culinary creations but also ensures that you're enjoying produce at its pinnacle freshness, enriched with vital vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Benefits of Seasonal Eating

Opting for seasonal produce boasts myriad advantages for both personal health and environmental well-being. Seasonal fruits and vegetables tend to be more nutrient-dense, having been harvested at optimal ripeness, preserving their utmost flavor and nutritional potency. Moreover, choosing locally grown, seasonal items supports our community farmers markets, diminishes the carbon footprint associated with transportation, and fosters a more profound connection between consumers and the agricultural landscape.

What's in Season: Spring

Strawberries: California is renowned for its sweet and juicy strawberries, which are typically in season from March to June.

Asparagus: This vegetable is at its best during spring, typically available from March to June.

Artichokes: California is a major producer of artichokes, and their peak season is from March to May.

Peas: Fresh peas, both sugar snap and English peas, are in season during spring, usually from April to June.

Broccoli: While available year-round, broccoli tends to be more tender and flavorful during the spring months.

Spinach: This leafy green is abundant in spring, offering a nutrient-rich addition to your meals.

Avocado: Although avocados are available throughout the year, their production peaks in spring, providing creamy and delicious fruits.

Radishes: These crunchy and peppery root vegetables are in season during spring.

Carrots: While available year-round, carrots are especially sweet and tender during the spring season.

Lettuce and Salad Greens: Various types of lettuce, arugula, and other salad greens thrive in the milder spring weather.

Cherries: The cherry season in California typically starts in late spring, around May.

Citrus Fruits (Oranges, Grapefruits, Lemons): While citrus fruits are more associated with winter, some varieties extend into spring.

Artisanal Cheeses: Spring is a great time for fresh cheeses, and California has a thriving artisanal cheese scene.

Herbs (Basil, Mint, Cilantro): These herbs become more abundant and flavorful during the spring season.

The Timeless Elixir of Olive Oil Revealed for Longevity and Culinary Delight on the Central Coast

here is a reason that Ancient Greek poet Homer once described olive oil as “liquid gold.” Greece itself is home to some of the oldest — still producing — olive trees in the world, and the oil has been touted as one of the Mediterranean’s most important ingredients. With living trees estimated to be between 3,000 to 4,000 years old, its no wonder that olive oil could be a key component to one’s longevity.

On the Central Coast, we are home to over 100 olive and olive oil producers and with California being a leader in olive oil quality regulations, we’ve hit the jackpot.

We visited three local olive oil producers and farmers who have embraced olive oil not only as a business but as a lifestyle. They are just a few of the many local olive oil producers we have on the Central Coast, and they give us easy access to that liquid gold.

Health Benefits of Olive Oil

New York Times Bestseller “The Blue Zone Kitchen” by Dan Buettner covers five “Blue Zones” — regions that have produced the world’s longest-lived people and see the lowest rates of heart disease and rates of diseases like dementia. Two of those regions call for olive oil as one of their top longevity ingredients. Sardinia and Ikaria are both within the Mediterranean region, where olive oil is the star of almost any dish.

Mediterranean cultures have always maintained the oil as a must for their dishes but may not have always understood the health benefits they received from it. We all know by now that the Mediterranean diet is known for its antiinflammatory effects on the human body, and recent studies have been unlocking more and more reasons why olive oil is crucial for longevity.

Researchers have unveiled that the polyphenols in olive oil are key to its antiinflammatory properties. Along with its healthy monounsaturated fats, studies have proven the oil to aid in the increase of good cholesterol and lower the bad. In Ikaria, Greece, residents consume at least four tablespoons of olive oil per day, which is suspected to protect them from heart disease.

Owner of Tiber Canyon Ranch in San Luis Obispo, Will Carlton, was one of the earliest olive tree farms in the county. Inspired by many trips to Italy with his wife, he has embraced all that olive oil has to offer, “Olive oil has been proven to lower cholesterol … and it actually cleans your arteries and its incredible … It’s the best medicine there is.”

In a November 2023 National Geographic article, food science researcher at the University of California Davis and former research director of the school’s Olive Center, Selina Wang, noted the phenols in extra virgin olive oil are antioxidants that are capable of protecting the body’s cells from harmful molecules. A regular consumption of olive oil can promote lower inflammation in one’s body, leading to youthful skin and improved memory.

How to Buy & Taste Olive Oil

Within your supermarket, you will find a wall full of olive oil. Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more common for those bottles to be filled with lower quality olive oil and sometimes even mixed with other seed oils. The California Olive Oil Council (COOC) provides several tips on how to purchase the best quality olive oil and explains the importance of understanding the difference between olive oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO).

EVOO is going to be the highest-graded and best-quality olive oil on the market. This grading means the oil has been cold processed and left unrefined to maintain the oil’s healthy properties. The COOC notes that in the United States, many of the oils labeled “extra virgin” are not required to undergo any testing to ensure their EVOO qualities. Any

oil with a COOC label, means it has been verified as an EVOO by COOC standards.

On the Central Coast, we have an abundance of EVOO producers and as I say, local is always going to be your best bet for quality and freshness.

Owner of Groves on 41 Karen Tallent gave me a tip for when tasting olive oil — if you get an after taste of a peppery kick in the back of your throat, then you have a quality oil filled with those vital polyphenols.

When tasting olive oil, keep in mind the “four Ss:” Swirl to release aroma, Sniff for intensity and characteristics, Slurp to spread and assess bitterness, and Swallow to gauge pungency. You can cleanse palate with green apple and water between tastings.

In the Kitchen
Central Coast Living | 55

How to Store Olive Oil

To properly store your EVOO, the most important step to take is to keep it away from light and heat. Look for oil stored in dark glass bottles to prevent oxidation which leads to rancidity. Once opened, its best to use your oil within three to six months. Light will shorten the life of your olive oil and so will heat. Also be sure to not leave the cap off your bottle for too long when cooking to keep oxygen out and your oil fresh. All in all, its best to keep your EVOO in a cool, dark cabinet.

How to Cook with Olive Oil

Olive oil has become one of the most versatile ingredients of the kitchen. In Blue Zones, it is common to finish dishes with olive oil — this will maintain all of the healthy properties of the oil where as heating the oil will begin to breakdown its monounsauturated fats. Olive oil can be used in salad dressing, bread dippings or to drizzle on a dish before serving.

However, its important not to be afraid of cooking with your EVOO. Olive oil can easily replace common vegetable oils or fats in dishes — even butter. Olive oil producers like Pasolivo in Adelaida have become known for their creative flavored oils. All of Pasolivo’s flavored oils are fused with ingredients rather than infused to create the most robust and pure taste. Flavors like garlic lemon, tangerine, rosemary, red jalapeno, and more can be found at the Pasolivo Tasting room off Vineyard Drive and at their Downtown Paso Robles location on Park Street.

General manager and Level Two Olive Oil Sommelier at Pasolivo, Marisa Bloch Gaytan, said, “We’re always trying to get a little bit creative with our flavors. For us, our flavoring is a little bit unique in the fact that everything has an extra virgin base.”

Flavored oils can be a fun addition to your dishes, and the availability of local quality EVOO on the Central Coast means the possibilities are endless to add a little bit of longevity magic to your meal.

from Grapes to Glass

When I stepped onto the grounds of Robert Hall Winery on an early spring day, I thought of Romeo and Juliet in the sense that if there ever was an alternate ending, this is maybe where they would end up. Unfortunately, Shakespeare did not give us an alternative happy ending for the Capulets and Montagues — but luckily, we can envision our own love stories and memories at Robert Hall Winery, with a glass of vino in hand, of course.

Managing Director Caine Thompson welcomed me to Robert Hall Winery with a light and refreshing glass of their Cavern Select wine. We headed to their new outdoor seating area to begin their signature Grape to Glass Excursion, which offers storytelling of the vineyard and winery with a tour and tastings hidden along the way. Caine continued to take on the journey of how they get from grape to glass and how the heart of their operation puts sustainability to the forefront.

The Founding Story

In the Kitchen Central Coast Living | 61

Sustainability

With Robert's passing in 2016, the winery was purchased by Jeff O'Neill with O'Neill Vintners & Distillers — a Sonoma-based company with sustainability at the heart of everything they do. The new ownership brought Caine to the Paso Robles winery who has helped lead Robert Hall to its regenerative era alongside world renowned biodynamic consultant Philippe Armenier.

In 2023, Caine was recognized as one of Wine Enthusiast Magazine's "Future 40" for his work in developing and implementing regenerative wine growing practices to the viticulture community.

As Caine says, "It all starts with the vine" when it comes to regenerative viticulture.

Sustainability was an important initiative from the start of the winery's founding. Caine has just helped bring Robert Hall into the new age of sustainability at a larger scale. The 173acre estate has its official certification for their winery and estate vineyards from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance—an industryleading program that audits sustainable practices and continuous improvement among California's many vineyards.

As an industry first, Robert Hall Winery initiated a living case study for the wine community at large and helped them learn about regenerative viticulture through biodynamic farming techniques, comparing the results with their sustainably farmed vineyards. The winery is currently pending an organic certification and will soon have a regenerative organic certification to top it off.

The Tasting Room

As part of the Grape to Glass Excursion, guests get the opportunity to explore the winery's cellars, including their underground one where there is a chance to taste straight from the barrel. The behind-the-scenes tour truly offers an insightful look into the winery's grapeto-glass process — hence the name.

To end the experience, guests are greeted back into the tasting room with an offering of small bites to harmonize with the different selections of wine. The grounds of Robert Hall are enough to transport you into a Tuscan dream. On a sunny day, you can take that dream for a bike ride through the estate on their E-Bike Vineyard Tour. This tour takes you personally through their biodynamic regenerative viticulture case study and compares it with their sustainably

farmed vineyards. For this adventure, you earn a walk through their cavern and barrel room (underground cellar), an electric-assisted bike ride through the vineyards, and, of course, a wine tasting accompanied by a cheeseboard.

Next time you enjoy a glass of wine, think about the grape-to-glass effect. Each sip holds a piece of that bottle's history, and that is why Caine fell into this industry head first, "I fell in love this whole notion of being able to grow something and turn it into wine to be this time capsule of history of all the people involved with pruning the grapes, and harvesting the fruit and making the wine."

Exploring the artistic side of the Central Coast through the eyes of three local artists

There’s no shortage of artistic inspiration or people making amazing things with it on the Central Coast. In this issue of Central Coast Living, we’re diving into three male artists who call the area home and are busy spilling their art out into the world. From public murals to creating local art collectives and everything in between, these three men have had a hand in making San Luis Obispo a more beautiful place.

The Artist Corner:

Charlie Rugg

Artist Charlie Rugg has been making art since he could hold a crayon. When he was very young, his peers saw what he was doing with his drawing, and it was evident that his talent had already started. And it didn't stop there; he found a deep appreciation of oil painting in high school, and it was then that he fell in love with the medium.

"I wouldn't say anything in particular inspired me to become an artist. It feels more like something that just is, and every time I make art, I'm reminded of that fact. I've been encouraged by teachers and supported by friends and family for as long as I can remember, so they have certainly helped to make the process feel natural," said Charlie. "Inspirations range from painter John Singer Sargent and photographer Jeff Wall to figures outside of the fine arts world — The late designer Virgil Abloh, director P.T. Anderson, musicians like Four Tet and Frank Ocean, and fashion houses like Balenciaga and The Elder Statesman."

Though his love of art started young, it wasn't until about six years ago that Charlie started creating consistent art and growing his portfolio. In fact, six years ago, Charlie left behind a huge part of himself as a professional soccer player. He played for five years, three in Los Angeles with the Galaxy and two years over in Germany. Though it was not his main focus, Charlie never stopped painting. He also stated that going back and forth between the two worlds was challenging and that he felt like a completely different person in each. Now, even though he misses soccer sometimes, that chapter of his life is over, and he's full of gratitude that he gets to explore being an artist freely.

"That identity void really allowed

my artistic self to come forward and carried me into the emerging stage of my artist journey. In that time, I've had the opportunity to explore, develop my process, and try things out. I'm definitely still trying things out," Charlie added.

Last year, Charlie had a show featured at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (SLOMA) titled "And also…" and it was one of the biggest highlights of his art career to date.

"Probably even more special than the actual show was the process of making work for the show. That five months of painting was one of the most peaceful, fulfilling, and transformative periods of my life. I'd say that was the real highlight," said Charlie.

Currently, Charlie calls San Luis Obispo home, but he's been on the Central Coast for the last six years, starting off with a two-year stint in Morro Bay.

"A relationship brought me here, the pandemic kept me here, and now the friendships and community are keeping me here. There's a reason SLO is Oprah's favorite city," Charlie continued.

Recently, Charlie moved into a new art studio at The Bunker in SLO, but before that, he had been painting out of his garage. He said that he's loving the creative community and workspace that The Bunker provides and is working on a mural for a portion of the outside of the building, which will be revealed soon, but in the meantime you can see Charlie's art in his studio or at Edna Contemporary in SLO.

You can also find Charlie Rugg's art on his website at cruggart.com.

The Artist Corner:

Tony Girolo

Born and raised in San Luis Obispo by parents who taught at Cal Poly, Tony Girolo has been creating art for the last 25 years. Whether it's been painting or drawing, he's been busy showing his artistic passion to the local community and beyond.

"I think the initial calling to being an artist is having an experience with a work or works of art that one could say borders on a religious experience or similarly deeply felt. I remember having those types of encounters in my teenage years with artworks and feeling like this is the way for me to go," Tony said about choosing his career path.

One of Tony's most informative moments was when he headed over to Geneva, Switzerland, for part of his junior year of high school. While there, he had several art teachers who were influential in encouraging him to pursue painting on a higher level.

"Those teachers, along with the excitement of being in such an amazing city as Geneva, really became my formative artistic experience as a youth. After that, doors continued to open for me, culminating in an MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2006. Then began a series of trials that have continued until today kind of testing to see if you are going to keep the process going or fold and do something more conventional," Tony added.

Tony's art career has included being invited by Galerie XII in Santa Monica, California, to participate in a two-man art show in December of 2023. He's also been featured twice in Santa Monica and Downtown Los Angeles at The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art. And in 2017, Tony was invited to participate in a three-week painting residency in San Juan, Puerto Rico. But Tony also says that lots of local art institutions have contributed to his success as an artist.

"I always enjoy heading down to Art After Dark to see new things happening in and around the 805. I had a great run at the Bunker several years ago and attribute a lot of my success to being able to maintain a studio there and get my footing as an artist. An important early teacher in my life was Robert Densham. He taught in the art and design department at Cal Poly for many years," added Tony.

Tony is living in San Luis Obispo and is enjoying his life making, creating, and exploring art in his humble one-bedroom apartment for everyone to enjoy.

You can find Tony Girolo's art on his website at tonygiroloart.com.

Oscar Pearson

Oscar Pearson's parents moved to Grover Beach (formerly Grover City) in the ‘80s, and since his arrival on earth, Oscar has been participating in the local art scene in one way or another. He's been honing in his focus on drawing and painting for the last 10 years and is happy to say that he's gotten to the point where he's reached a constant state of play in his work.

"In my youth, I would spend hours making meandering ballpoint pen drawings with my Dad. He also introduced me to various ‘underground’ artists and illustrators like Frank Frazetta, HR Giger, and R. Crumb, as well as psychedelic surf art. My grandmother, an amateur painter, led me to the bold colors and shapes of Georgia O'Keefe and Paul Gauguin. I studied photography and ceramics before landing on my longest-held passion, painting," stated Oscar.

Oscar has always had a studious work ethic and was the artist assistant to an established ceramicist for three years before deciding to get his Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting from California State University Long Beach. As soon as he graduated, Oscar hit the ground running, working on public projects and commissions and elevating his art.

"I have a technical curiosity that leads me to a wide range of methodologies within painting and beyond into other media like sculpture, animation, and ceramics. I used to see this as a weakness, but now I have embraced it as a strength. In fact, I never want to quit exploring different modes of working. Instead, I let my love for learning new things motivate my direction as

an artist," said Oscar.

On top of his artistic endeavors, Oscar also co-founded and, for several years, co-managed The Place on PCH, an arts coalition in Oceano, California, that offers a program for international artists to hold residency there. Oscar is also known for his public projects around the county, which you can see for yourself.

"They reach a different, larger audience and make a difference daily in public spaces. Living on or visiting the Central Coast, you may have seen one or two. Most recently, I completed two projects on the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. First, a triptych mural titled “Generosity” adorning the exterior walls of the food processing building number 24 on the agricultural end of campus in a newly remodeled dining area called Via Carta near the campus market. The mural speaks to several themes, including recognizing the valuable contributions of farm laborers on the Central Coast and the agricultural bounty of our region, as well as Cal Poly's student contributions to the field of agriculture," Oscar shared.

He continued, "A year later, I returned to the university campus to paint a series of large utility boxes near the Grand Avenue entrance to campus right in front of Scout Coffee, across from the campus dining area and adjacent to the Performing Arts Center. The project titled “Sixteen Native Plants” celebrates diverse habitats of California and brings closer attention to native plants, their beauty, specificity, harmony, patterns, and diversity. On a similar theme, I painted a mural dedicated to California Oak trees in Santa Maria, California, at Atkinson Park. Another one you may recognize is the colorful and festive pictorial celebration of Mexican culture, cuisine, and Oceano dunes painted on the wall of Chacho's, the locally famous hole-in-the-wall restaurant on Highway 1 in Oceano known for their homemade tortillas."

An Oasis for All

JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa

As warmer weather beckons, now is the opportune moment to embark on planning a spring getaway, whether it’s a golf or spa weekend with friends, a family retreat, a destination wedding, or a memorable business retreat. Amidst the enjoyable planning process, the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa emerges as the perfect destination for those seeking a plug-and-play vacation experience, embodying a “choose your adventure” mindset within its 869 rooms and 81 suites. Welcoming even four-legged companions, the $80 million transformation of this 316-acre property ensures that every guest’s needs are met.

The first things many of us consider when booking a getaway in nearby Phoenix are family-friendly features, outdoor activities, a glamorous spa, and a well-appointed golf course—and the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge checks all of those boxes. One of the resort’s star attractions is Wildfire Golf Club, with two panoramic 18-hole championship courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Nick Faldo. Revive Spa incorporates luxurious and rejuvenating facials, massages, and body treatments and updated fitness center along with relaxation rooms, a palm-lined sanctuary pool, cabanas, a sauna, steam rooms, fitness classes, a bistro, and a salon.

The first thing many of us consider when booking a getaway in nearby Phoenix are family-friendly features...

Wellness extends to the great outdoors with bike rentals and easy access to nearby hiking and fitness trails. True to JW Marriott tradition, there are several activities designed for children and young teens with a variety of interests, from athletic activities, to art and culinary sessions. As the pickleball craze has swept the country—and Southern California in particular—the resort now boasts a Pickleball Center where guests can book hourly court time on 17 lighted courts as well as group and one-on-one instruction with a certified pickleball instructor.

The JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge’s status as a true desert oasis was recently and dramatically enhanced this year with the opening of the 140,000-square-foot AquaRidge WaterPark. The $18 million pool refresh encompasses an improved “lazy river,” Wildfire Grove, and Havasu Playground with three new water slides, including the only dual-person vertical wall tube slide at a resort west of the Mississippi. Although these refreshed amenities will appeal to the kid in everybody, the luxury enhanced Sedona Springs (which includes personalized concierge services and a stargazing area) and exclusive adults-only Sky Island (with an infinity edge plunge pool, hot tub, and fire pits) will satisfy guests just wanting to chill out. Sky Island also includes exclusive space for weddings and private events overlooking the lake and golf course.

Poolside food and beverage outlets include Havasu Bar & Bites and a food zone area with shaded tables and seating, Canyon Creek Bar for kid and adultfriendly refreshments, and Desert Ridge’s Taqueria for a savory meal pre- or postswim. Those who wish to splurge on a more luxurious pool experience can book a Canyon Creek Day Suite with prime access to the lazy river, a secluded area with lounge seating, a private bathroom, air conditioning, multiple TVs, and a personal towel bin along with amenities such as seasonal fresh fruit, chilled water, and sunscreen. The original, kid-friendly Wildfire Grove includes the popular “Just A Splash’ pool bar with its Southwestern and barbecue menu. Optional Wildfire Cabanas are equipped with a misting fan, spacious couch and TV, seasonal fresh fruit, chilled water, sunscreen, personalized service, and two chaise lounge chairs.

Guest rooms and suites come standard with dramatic Sonoran desert and mountain views, lush garden landscaping, and complimentary bottled water. However, the most recent design upgrades incorporate contemporary furnishings, accessories, and lighting with themed elements (fire, water, earth, and sky), floor-to-ceiling soundproof windows, a JW Luxury Bedding Package, spacious living room sitting areas, plush robes, Smart TV, and Aromatherapy Associates Bath Amenities. In addition to the lavish presidential and ultra-premium suites, the resort offers Patio Fire Pit Rooms and wellness Suites for those who want to enjoy the resort’s best amenities in a more private and customized setting.

Like other JW Marriott properties, this one is home to several upscale and casual restaurants that have earned a following among Phoenix residents. Chef Angelo Sosa sets the culinary direction with Tia Carmen, touted as one of “The 12 Hottest New Restaurants in Phoenix” by a local magazine when it first opened. While the restaurant’s foundation is inspired by his aunt’s prowess in the kitchen, he also delves into local landscape, farmers, and communities to forge a creative food menu. Meritage – An Urban Tavern, adjoining the Wildfire Golf Club, attracts locals and visitors alike with creative pub food favorites as well as 50 different Arizona craft beers. Twenty6 is a reliably chic cocktail and bourbon bar with creative bites, and later this year, Asian-fusion fans can discover Chef Sosa’s Kembara.
