A hardworking performance and the backing of the Red Army was enough to get us over the line in last weeks FA Cup fixture. The lads gave their all to set up a local derby in the next round against Clitheroe in a weeks time. We look forward to seeing you all there! Before that we host Kidsgrove Athletic in our first league game of the season and I’d like to give a warm welcome to everyone connected to the club. I expect a very similar game to last week as we come up against another tough opponent. The players worked their socks off against 1874, although at times that was down to naivety and inexperience on our part. This week we talked about being calmer and more confident in possession and how this will help us make better decisions and ultimately help us retain the ball. We also worked on more patterns which I expect to see us improve our possession stats. That said, I do see us taking time to fully develop our identity and style, the group is new and youthful, so we will have to be patient and supportive. If we do that then I’m confident we will become a difficult opponent for anyone. Rest assured the players will continue to work hard on all aspects of their game with the aim of achieving positive results. Enjoy the game. Red Army! Phil Brown

Good afternoon, May I take this opportunity to welcome the Directors, Players, Management and fans from Kidsgrove Athletic to Holt House for the start of another NPL season. With pre season now behind us along with a good win in the F A Cup we now embark on another league season in the Northern Premier League West division. Phil & his backroom team have worked hard throughout the summer to build a new squad, whilst this could be any opportunity for the people of Colne to come & support the players who have produced some positive results in pre season along with a hard fought F A Cup victory. This weekend the U21 will be playing in a tournament in Germany that links with Colne twin town, I have no doubt that the team led by Peter Ellis & Nick Elliott will represent the club with positive credibility. Good luck to everyone. In the F A Trophy we have been drawn away to Bridlington Town on Saturday September 10th, Ben Metcalfe is looking to arrange a supporters coach therefore anyone interested please contact Ben. Regarding the ladies & U21 & U18 fixtures we are still waiting for the release once they have been published we will make them available to everyone then we can get along to support the teams. Thetimes.Eighties saw the club grow more and more and the clubhouse and ground started developing further and further with the aid of a strong committee, supporters, and local tradesmen. In 1986 the club applied for membership of the North West Counties league but this was rejected twice until
After success in cup and league in the Burslem and Tunstall league the club joined the Staffordshire County league in 1963 where again they had success winning the league and Staffs Challenge cup. In search of more success the club joined the Mid Cheshire league, a move not entirely liked by the Staffs FA but eventually they did allow a Kidsgrove reserve side back into the County league.
The main instigator, Ernie Langford, endured a sixty year tenure with the club as Chairman then President and served many years on the Staffs FA until his passing a few years ago. The main stand is named after him. Eric Hibbitt and Frank Timmis, who both attended that first meeting, still support the club today.
Athletic were formed in December 1952 after a meeting in the Blue Bell public house, one mile away from the present ground. It was formed as a breakaway club from Kidsgrove United when it was thought the club were bringing in too many ’outsiders’ from the potteries instead of local players.
The club started life in the now defunct Burslem and Tunstall League playing on the Vickers and Goodwin pitch on the A50 just down the road. In 1961 the present ground was acquired from a local farmer and the club took a year out to develop the pitch.
The Seventies and Eighties saw the club have huge successes winning the Mid Cheshire league four times and the challenge cup three times, and they also lifted the Staffs FA Vase and the challenge cup once more. They also lifted the prestigious Sentinel Cup three

Promotion to the NPL was not forthcoming because of facilities but in 2002 after winning the league promotion was gained. The team struggled on and off the field and two years later they faced relegation for the first time in their history after finishing bottom of the league. The restructuring of the league however saved this from happening and to celebrate the club won the Staffs Senior Cup for the first time beating Stafford Rangers 1 0 at the Britannia Stadium, a feat they have won four times since. The club have only picked up one piece of silverware in the league winning the Chairman’s Cup 7-6 on aggregate against Woodley Sports and reached the play offs once, losing 1 0 to Glapwell in 2010. Struggles have ensued and re election twice saved relegation and despite reaching the FA Trophy Quarter Finals losing 2 0 to Ilkeston, and the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round losing 2 0 to Bradford PA, Kidsgrove have had to settle for Fair Play awards. The club reached the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round again in 2018 and faced the long journey to Conference side Hartlepool United and were unlucky in losing 1 0.

Three years later Kidsgrove were promoted to the First Division after finishing tenth in the Second Division, the result of the league introducing strict ground criteria. Part of this was the installation of floodlights, (acquired free off the council from run down tennis courts at Chinky OnPark).the 29th October 1991 Lou Macari brought his Stoke City team to officially switch on the Withinfloodlights.thenext ten years the south and west stands were completed but the club struggled financially on and off the field but after the demise of Eastwood Hanley in 1997 the playing side were strengthened when their manager Jimmy Wallace, along with Neil Dundas and Chris Hagan. horror show of defeat after defeat saw Kidsgrove third from bottom at one stage, but Scott's belief was justified with a strong finish including results against the top six and the team finished mid table. Scott has appointed Tom Urwin as assistant manager and Scott Bentley as goalkeeper coach. During the close season, a new Physio Room has been built, two new stands next to the Autonet stand (including an outside bar) and new metal fencing is being erected to replace the old gravel board fencing and third stand erected below the main stand. This will mean three quarters of the ground will have covered accommodation.

We caught up with Kidsgrove fan Neil Smith, from Goldenhill (Just outside Kidsgrove) How Long have you supported Kidsgrove? 5 years. Went to non league day 2017 out of curiosity. Wanted to experience a non league game. Instantly fell in love with the club and have been going home and away since. Favourite away ground ? I’ve always loved Workington. Proper old school ground with terracing on all four sides of the pitch. Enjoy having a few ales on the coach and making a proper day of it. It takes about 3hrs 30 mins to get there from Kidsgrove. The league have screwed us over this season by making us travel there Who do you normally go to games with? Usually with my mate James. My 3 year old son joins us when my missus is working weekends. The hardcore Kidsgrove fans get on really well and all meet up at the match. Best thing about supporting Kidsgrove? The people. The board, volunteers, coaching staff, players and fans are all close knit and are in it together. There’s a permanent feel good factor around the place and everyone looks out for one another. Best player you've seen in a Kidsgrove shirt? Anthony Malbon. Our all time record goal scorer was unplayable on his day. Scored some absolutely phenomenal goals and has an incredible football brain. His goal against Droylsden in 2019 when he lobbed the keeper on his line is the greatest goal ever scored.

Hopes for the season ahead? Another top half finish. The league will be stronger than ever this year. We ended last season incredibly well and can beat anyone on our day. We’ve kept most of our best players from last season and added some real quality. If we start well we could potentially contend for the play offs. Which Player should we be looking out for? The front three of Knapper, Kingsley Gyamfi and Brown have linked up really well in preseason. All are a real handful. They tore Port Vale to shreds. in a recent 3 0 friendly win with all three getting on the score sheet. Best memory supporting the grove? The FA Cup run in 2018/19 was incredible. We got to the 4th Qualifying Round narrowly losing 1 0 away at Hartlepool. We were by far the better side in the second half and were very unlucky to lose. To take on such a big club away from home in such a big match is something that I’ll never forget. Prediction for today's game? Colne away is always a tough test but I’m going for a 3 0 Kidsgrove win.

1996, by a group of like minded people under the wing of now Life President Dave Blacklock. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non league football, and arrangements were made for a new club to use the vacant Holt House Stadium, once used by the Dynamoes in the North West Counties Football League Division Two. Colne FC’s first ever competitive game was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich and the result ended in a 1 0 defeat. The team was then managed by Keith Mason, but after his resignation soon after, Denzel Hart was appointed to the hot seat. His first game was a 6 0 defeat away at Ashton Town, but just two games later Colne FC recorded their first ever victory thumping Bacup Borough 5 2. The highlight of the season, coming when the reserves won the BEP Cup at Clitheroe’s Shawbridge ground. In the summer of 2002 James Webster took control of the club, to become the youngest chairman in the league at the age of 24.
James was a player at the club with plenty of experience and along with his father who was vice chairman, had a strong desire to see the current side emulate the success of its predecessors.

COLNE F.C. HISTORY

The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase for a North West Counties Football League Division Two club, they progressed all the way to the Semi Finals, (via an incredible 1 2 away win at AFC Wimbledon) before being defeated over two legs 4 3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. As the season progressed attendances started to rise as the local population realised we were no longer the whipping boys of the league, and the famous RED ARMY was formed. In November 2013 Colne’s manager for the past 10 years Nigel Coates stepped down from the hot seat and former Colne player Steve Cunningham was appointed manager, with another former Colne favourite Ted Cockett as his No.2 and Coach. Steve and Ted had ambitious plans for the club and wasted no time in bringing in a few new faces to boost the playing squad, consolidating for the rest of the season but with big hopes and plans for the following seasons. Season 2014/15 proved to be a year of progress in terms of league placing, with Colne finishing a creditable fourth.

This season was our 25th anniversary since the demise of Colne Dynamoes and had the challenge of a new league to play in with several new signings and Lee Pugh taking over as captain from long time servant Alex Coleman. After 13 games and with the squad blighted by injuries to key players, the record was Played 13, won 5 drawn 3, lost 5. In the FA Cup we played our old friends Trafford away and took them back to Harrison Drive to win the replay 2 1. Next up were Stalybridge Celtic away who we beat 1 0 before losing at home to Guiseley AFC 1 0. In the FA Trophy we drew City of Liverpool FC away winning 1 0. The next round took us to Buxton beating them 2 1 to progress to the First Round proper. The draw then paired us with a Step 3 team from the Southern League Central Division, Tamworth FC. In a hard fought game which ended 1 1 Colne bowed out 4 3 on penalties. The First Round is our best progress so far in the completion. Nathan Rooney resigned in December stating personal reasons He was replaced by Jonathon Macken who brought in Steve Atkinson as his assistant for our New Year’s Day game against Kendal Town a scrappy 1 0 defeat. January 2022 was a month of comings and goings with six players in and an equal number being moved on and saw just 1 point from the last 6 games. February was no better with another four defeats but signs of improvement. March saw three wins and a draw with no goals conceded which effectively ensured safety for the season at this level. The club finished the campaign in 14th place with a record of: Played 38, won 12, drawn 8, lost 18, 44 points.
2019/20 saw the season null and voided due to the Covid epidemic with Colne in a mid table position. At the end of the season long time manager Steve Cunningham stepped down and was replaced by Nathan Rooney. 2020/21 With a new manager and back room staff in place Colne were looking forward to being a challenger in a very strong league. Colne ended the curtailed season sitting in first place after nine 2021/2022games.
2022/23 The campaign starts with a new manager, Macken having moved to Witton, Phil Brown comes in with experience in the league at Lancaster City and Clitheroe.

Colne came through their first big test of the season on Saturday 6th August with a closely fought win over 1874 Northwich in the Extra Preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup. Phil Brown’s young side competed throughout and a second half equaliser by the visitors only served to sting the Reds into action to restore their lead within three minutes. Both sides attacked from the outset and Northwich threatened with attacks up the right wing forcing Glenn Steel to clear the ball from his goalmouth in an early raid and Hakan Burton to make a great stop at his near post from Manuel Diop Parra’s well struck shot after ten minutes. As Northwich continued to look the more dangerous, Fenton Green saw his well struck shot blocked on the edge of the areaColneand Burton did well to hold a goal bound shot by Joe Woolley under his crossbar after 26 Fiveminutes.minutes later, at the other end, Ellis Wallbank’s pass found Owen Watkinson inside the visitors’ area and he turned past the defender before shooting low and hard past ex Red Tony Aghayere and into the far corner of the net to give Colne the lead. The Reds were lifted by the goal and pressed forward looking for a second with Adam Mayor opening up the visitors’ defence and Lucas Weaver having shots blocked in the Northwich area. Colne thought they had doubled their lead after 43 minutes when a great run by Steel set up Watkinson to fire home from an angle but a marginal offside decision ruled

the goal out and the Reds went into the interval with a single goal lead. Colne pushed forward early in the second half and Craig Carney’s shot was blocked in the area in a period of pressure for the Reds. While at the other end, Mackenzie O’Neill forced a good save from Burton to keep out his shot at the near post. After 58 minutes, Northwich drew level as Joe Woolley worked the ball in from the right touchline before firing a low left foot shot inside the near post of the Colne goal. Colne’s response was immediate as Mayor forced a corner on the left for the Reds and from the resulting cross Jack Doherty rose high above the Northwich defence to head the ball past a helpless Aghayere and into the net to restore Colne’s lead.
Northwich looked for a second equaliser and Jack Irlam looked sure to score before Burton got down at his feet to block his effort and clear the danger. And the visitors came close again when O’Neill’s header came back off the Colne crossbar before being cleared by the Reds defence. But Colne threatened at the other end with some good attacking moves involving Tom Fagan, Harry Jones and Luke Stowe. And Mayor flashed a shot just wide from a good chance before Watkinson was denied by a point blank save by Aghayere in his goalmouth as the Reds fought strongly to secure a deserved win.

Our first game against Clitheroe Wolves finished 2 2. A great game of football from both teams, battling right until the final whistle. We have since played two more games and secured both wins. A 4 1 victory against Silsden and more recently a 2 1 win against Darwen Reserves. In between the games, we’ve been working extremely hard on and off the pitch. Fitness levels, team moral and squad depth have all increased giving each of us healthy competition for a successful season ahead! Liv, who also runs her own online nutrition business &

Team Captain Liv, shares her thoughts on preseason so far. With additional signings from another local team which had recently folded, we decided to get pre season underway early! Bringing two teams who formerly played against each other, together as one, we knew we had a big job on our hands. We’d had just 1 pre season training session before our first friendly, this was both exciting and nerve racking but we knew we had incredible support from the club, local fans, friends & families.

Theseason.final preparations for the season are well underway with their final two pre season fixtures scheduled away at Fleetwood Wrens on 14th August and Blackburn Community the following Sunday. Manager Shaun Howard added Preseason has seen us go from strength to strength. The team are developing well and with recruitment in certain areas providing the strength and depth required to ensure we are in the best position to have a successful campaign.

Team supported as a child? As a child my dad took me to some Manchester United games, still have my first ever game ticket and programme framed, I also had a season ticket for Macclesfield, I’d go to the games with my best mate and grandad. Clubs you have played for? Mossley, Buxton, FC United, Clitheroe, Hyde United & Macclesfield. Best coach you have worked under? 2 that stand out for me are, Nathan Rooney as he was a very detailed coach and focuses on patterns of play.
Phil Brown our current gaffer, I have to say, too. I played under him at Clitheroe for around 10 games and he puts on very detailed sessions and wants to win with hard working team, as you all saw in the FA Cup game last weekend. Best player you have played with? DEAN

Most memorable game you've been involved in and why? For me one with Colne has to be the game against Kendal Boxing Day 2 2 with 88 minutes played and we have a free kick on the right hand side. Ryan Taylor takes it, finds me back post , bullet header, we win the game 3 2. Growing up, which sports star was your idol and why? 2 for me has to be Vidic and Ferdinand. They were just a great partnership and they created. Solid partnership as CB. What do you do outside of football? Day to day I work in aerospace but when the weathers nice don’t mind a day fishing or I’ll have a list of jobs to do! Dont mind a Sunday walk either currently completing the wainwrights around the Lake District and a holiday love a holiday!! What is your go to pre-match song? I’ll give you my all time favourite song ……… Tracey Chapman fast car your other half do you're at football? her either shopping about somewhere bank card!! your favourite food? bolognaise or pizza. cook as well! /colnefootballclub @colne_fc
