Good afternoon & a warm welcome to all from Hanley Town. Although we are still looking for our 1st league win, it’s not for the want of trying!
Generally the performances have been good. This week we spoke about ensuring we commit fully to our performances. We can’t drop our physical or mental intensity. I’m confident the players now understand it’s no minutes.forplayinggoodwell60or70 Experience has taught them it has to be for the entirety of the game. We’ve had opportunities to take maximum points in several games. The lads know if you don’t take your chances & switch off defensively then there’s a high probability of losing what you have. Today will be another challenge for our young squad, Hanley did well last season and areexperiencedanside, sowewillhaveto be at our best.
A mixture of injuries & personal commitments have meant selection so far has been inconsistent. I am hopeful of bringing in a few players over the next week or so that will add depth & improve the Finallysquad. I’d like to wish Hakan & Harry a speedy recovery from their injuries. They have been excellent for us & I can’t wait for them to be back in Enjoycontention.thegame.

In 1966 a group of friends were playing mainly friendly games on a Sunday based at The Trumpet Public House in Hanley. (The building is now occupied by McDonalds, facing the Wetherspoons pub). The friends decided to join a Saturday league (Longton League) and changed their name to Hanley Town (Owen Rhead took on the mangers role in 1966). That very first season the club won the Longton League and the Longton Charity Cup. The team were playing on a pitch rented from a local engineering firm Copestick & Farrell on Victoria Road just outside InHanley.the 1967/68 season the club moved up to the Staffordshire County League (North) and were placed in Division 2, a reserve team was formed and replaced the first team in the Longton League. The season was one of the most successful – the combined teams winning six trophies and were runners-up in two others. Washing

the club lost its ground on Victoria Road to developers and so the club moved into a groundshare agreement with neighbours Eastwood Hanley, who were playing in the West Midlands League at the time. The reserves were able to continue to rent a ground from Johnsons nearby. Both Hanley teams were now playing in the Staffordshire County League (North), the first team in the Premier Division and the reserves in Division 1. The ‘72/73 season saw the first team became Premier Division Champions, with the reserves finishing third in Division 1. The Staffordshire FA Challenge Cup was won beating Roebuck in the WithFinal.Eastwood wanting to increase the rent for the 1974/75 season to an unacceptable level the club agreed a groundshare with Leek Town. It was a disappointing season on the field, the first team finishing 5th in the County Premier Division, with the reserves finishing 12th out of 14 teams in Division 1. The club were runners-up in two cup competitions the Sentinel Cup and the Roger Lomas Trophy. For the 1976/77 season under the managerial reins of Joe Wills, Hanley Town moved into their present ground on Abbey Lane where the club started to develop the facilities. The club also took the plunge into joining the MidCheshire League Second Division which was in its second season. A 4th place finish in the MidCheshire League Second Division and winning the Second Division cup, beating Knutsford 1 0 in the Final was not a bad first season in the new league. The 1980/81 season was a disappointment as the club finished in its worst league position. The cup competitions though were a success however – the new Staffordshire FA Vase was introduced by the Staffordshire FA to replace the Intermediate Cup, 16 clubs from North and South of the County were invited to take part.
Hanley Town had the honour of being the first winners defeating Chasetown over two legs, the firstleg away at Chasetown ended 0-0, with the return leg at Abbey Lane, in front of 1,000 spectators ending 2-1 to Hanley. The League Cup was also retained after beating Linotype 2-1.

In the 1981/82 season the club finally became Mid-Cheshire League Champions by a six-point margin and only two defeats in the league all season. The clubs attempt to defend the Staffordshire FA Vase was almost successful as we reached the Final again, only to lose over two legs 2 0 to neighbours Eastwood Hanley. The following three seasons were mediocre, but in the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons under the managerial reins of Peter Ward –the seasons provided the club with some success. Two third place finishes in the Mid-Cheshire League; League Cup success beating Kidsgrove Athletic 3 1 after extra time; winning the Leek Cup; the Newcastle Charities Cup and the club were also inaugural winners of the Congleton Floodlit Cup. The reserves during this period were Staffordshire Alliance League Premier Division RunnersUp and Premier Division Cup winners. The club started a youth team, the team playing in the Staffordshire County Minor Youth League they finished Runners Up in the league, won the Subsidiary Cup and won the Sentinel Shield. In 1988 the club applied for membership of the North West Counties League, but with new ground grading being introduced at the time, the club failed in its application. With the club’s application turned down, the first team left to play at a higher level for Nantwich Town who were in the North West Counties League at the time. In 1988/89 ex-Stoke City, Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra player Terry Lees was given the task of rebuilding an entire new first team, and over the next few years began to assemble a team that was gradually climbing the table. Terry had to step down in 1993 due to other commitments outside of Thereafter, football. in this period, began a slow decline, to which the club nearly folded in 1995. Then ex Port Vale player Neville Chamberlain, first as manager, then as chairman steadied the club. For the 2011/12 Darren Stair’s brother, Colin Stair took over as first team manager after a successful few seasons as reserve and youth team manager – he was assisted by Dave Price and Glen ThatParkes.season the team won the Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division title and the reserve team managed by Mark Giblin and Steve Harrison won the Division 1 title.
Success was finally achieved the following season when Darren and Dave guided a young Hanley Town side to a treble of titles: Midland (SCSL) Champions; League Cup Winners (vs Hanford 2-1); Staffordshire FA Vase (vs Audley 1 0) and the reserves won the Leek Cup (vs Audley 4 2). The following season the club retained the league title, losing just once in the league, however losing to Ball Haye Green in the Leek Cup BetweenFinal. 2006 and 2011 Steve Norris (FA Trophy winner) and then Dave Wooliscroft took on the managerial reins consistently keeping the team in the top five of the league and onto a number of cup semi-finals.
The 2012/13 was a season of joy and sorrow Colin Stair and Dave Price guided the first team to a memorable quadruple of titles. That season the first team became Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division Champions; League Cup Winners (vs Wolstanton Utd 2-1); Staffordshire FA Vase Winners (vs Wolstanton Utd 3 1) and Leek Cup Winners (vs Audley 4 3 on pens,2 2 after extra Withtime).four league games remaining in the season, first team manager Colin Stair suddenly passed away, the lads brilliantly saw the season through to win the fourth title for ‘Codger’. It was Colin’s ambition to get the club and manage at a higher level starting with the North West Counties Football League, which the club achieved by being accepted into the First Division of the North West Counties League for the 2013/14 season. The first season at a higher level resulted in a fourth place, with Hanley also reaching the final of the NWCL First Division Trophy, unfortunately losing on penalties to Formby. F.C.

With eight games still to play, Hanley were sitting bottom of the table, and in the sole relegation spot, but were only one point behind the team above and with a game in hand on them everything still to play for. Sadly, 2020/21 also went the same way with few games played. In 2021/2022 the club made it as far as the FA Third Qualifying Round bowing out to National League North Brackley Town after a replay 1-0. The icing on the cake though was winning the Midland League Premier Division earning promotion to the NPL West Division for the 2022/23 campaign.

1996, by a group of like-minded people under the wing of now Life President Dave Blacklock. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of nonleague football, and arrangements were made for a new club to use the vacant Holt House Stadium, once used by the Dynamoes in the North West Counties Football League Division Two. Colne FC’s first ever competitive game was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich and the result ended in a 1 0 defeat. The team was then managed by Keith Mason, but after his resignation soon after, Denzel Hart was appointed to the hot seat. His first game was a 6 – 0 defeat away at Ashton Town, but just two games later Colne FC recorded their first ever victory thumping Bacup Borough 5 2. The highlight of the season, coming when the reserves won the BEP Cup at Clitheroe’s Shawbridge Inground.the summer of 2002 James Webster took control of the club, to become the youngest chairman in the league at the age of 24.
James was a player at the club with plenty of experience and along with his father who was vice-chairman, had a strong desire to see the current side emulate the success of its Websterpredecessors.responded immediately by appointing Nigel Coates as the new manager as well as player Gary Rishton as his number two. The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase for a North West Counties Football League Division Two club, they progressed all the way to the SemiFinals, (via an incredible 1 – 2 away win at AFC Wimbledon) before being defeated over two legs 4 – 3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. As the season progressed attendances started to rise as the local population realised we were no longer the whipping boys of the league, and the famous RED ARMY was formed. In November 2013 Colne’s manager for the past 10 years Nigel Coates stepped down from the hot seat and former Colne player Steve Cunningham was appointed manager, with another former Colne favourite Ted Cockett as his No.2 and SteveCoach.andTed had ambitious plans for the club and wasted no time in bringing in a few new faces to boost the playing squad, consolidating for the rest of the season but with big hopes and plans for the following Seasonseasons.2014/15 proved to be a year of progress in terms of league placing, with Colne finishing a creditable fourth. This season was our 25th anniversary since the demise of Colne Dynamoes and had the challenge of a new league to play in with several new signings and Lee Pugh taking over as captain from long time servant Alex Coleman. After 13 games and with the squad blighted by injuries to key players, the record was Played 13, won 5 drawn 3, lost 5. In the FA Cup we played our old friends Trafford away and took them back to Harrison Drive to win the replay 2-1. Next up were Stalybridge Celtic away who we beat 1-0 before losing at home to Guiseley AFC 1-0. In the FA Trophy we drew City of Liverpool FC away winning 1-0. The next round took us to Buxton beating them 2-1 to progress to the First Round proper. The draw then paired us with a Step 3 team from the Southern League Central Division, Tamworth FC. In a hard fought game which ended 1-1 Colne bowed out 4-3 on penalties. The First Round is our best progress so far in the completion.

Mossley looked for a quick reply with Freddie Sass making good runs up the left wing but Tom Fagan kept him at bay with some good defensive tackles. Colne got off to a lively start in the opening period and made some early chances with Lucas Weaver shooting just wide in the first minute and Tom McCann heading straight at the keeper from a close range chance a minute later. Five minutes later, Weaver’s cross from the bye line just eluded Owen Watkinson in the goalmouth as Colne looked to open the scoring. But as play switched to the other end, Kian Bell’s 20 yard shot was deflected into the hands of Danny Thorpe in the Colne goal and Thorpe was in action minutes later diving to save a downward header at the far post from a Widnes corner. Craig Carney saw his 20 yard shot saved by the Widnes keeper Owen Wheeler on his line at the second attempt. But Widnes forced a series of corners to test the Colne defence and Declan Daniels headed just wide from a good chance after 22 minutes. Five minutes later from another Widnes corner, Stephen Rigby’s shot was blocked in the Colne area and in a quick breakaway Weaver raced away and shot just over the Widnes goal at the other end. With half time approaching, Watkinson fired a diagonal shot inches wide of the far post as Colne came close to taking the lead.

The end-to-end play continued as the second half began and after 58 minutes the referee played the advantage rule following a foul in midfield and a through ball sent Weaver on a run into the left hand side of the Widnes area and he slotted the ball past the oncoming keeper and into the net to put Colne in front at 1 0. But the lead did not last long as three minutes later, Widnes drew level when a long diagonal free kick into the Colne area was headed back across the goal and into the top corner of the net by Daniels for a spectacular Colneequaliser.looked to restore their lead and Matty Kardacz shot just wide in a crowded Widnes area after 70 minutes as the Reds mounted more pressure on the Widnes goal with Carney and Watkinson creating chances.

Let me start by saying that this stadium is massive! I think the distinct lack of fans in the ground makes it feel somewhat bigger, but for non league, its on its own, but sadly not in a good way. The DCBL Stadium can hold over 13,000 fans, but I don’t think either Widnes teams are in any danger of filling that any time soon.
THE LIONS DEN REVIEWS
Admission prices are set at the cheapest in the league (I think) at £8, concessions at £4 and under 16’s get in free, so for me, they get extra points for this alone. As I was on Media duties on Saturday I entered through the main reception and was led through the passage ways to the hospitality area. Although for me, I like to get out in the stand and have a pie and something to drink, but the hospitality area and its surroundings are excellent, as you would expect for a ground of this Naturallymagnitudewith a stadium of this size, there is a large electronic scoreboard, which occupies the empty stand behind the goals. This stand remains empty even when Vikings are at home. Sadly their attendances have diminished with the slow decline of the once great Vikings side Overall, a lovely stadium, just not for this level of football, too big and just doesn’t feel like the rest of the non league grounds knocking around 6/10
STADIUM
In this weeks edition of our away day reviews, programme editor Ben Metcalfe shares his thoughts on our trip to the DCBL Stadium on Saturday.

PROGRAMME
A selection of Pies, Crisps, Drinks and Sausage Rolls were available I opted for a Cheese and Onion pie (Hollands), Mars Bar and a Coke, this was £6. Not bad value considering it was in a football stadium. The Pie was £4. I only know this as I went back down at half time for a second, opting for a Chicken Balti this time round. Plenty of choice for those looking for alcohol, but as I was driving it was a dry Saturday for me!
For anybody that’s driven to away games with me, I blindly follow my sat nav and still manage to take a wrong turn off. (I hope im not alone here). However this journey was unique in the fact that I didn’t make a wrong turn, didn’t hit traffic and my Google Maps made me miss plenty of traffic. I had a pick up at Holt House, which was chaotic due to the blues, but aside from that, it was a nice journey, just under an hour, too! 9/10
FOOD AND DRINK FRIENDLINESTHELIONS DEN
COLNE F.C. V HANLEY TOWN | /colnefootballclub @colne_fc
Thesectionfood kiosks are on the concourse which I assume during rugby days is packed with fans, however the smattering of fans that attended the game had no issue queuing.
I have had mixed experiences at Widnes in the friendliness of the staff. The officials are always so welcoming, but some of the Stewards that are appointed (by the council) can be a bit frosty and not really understanding the true “non-league” vibe. 7/10
Being greedy I usually try both the visiting officials food and the standard ground grub, but opted against the usual great food from the hospitality
A simple programme, but reasonably priced at just £2 I think the programme could do with some additional content, as it didn’t contain much information, but it felt and looked good. It featured an interview with long standing captain Michael Burke, which was a nice feature. Could have had more interesting content, as a “home fan” I think the programme would get a little tedious 5/10 JOURNEY

COLNE F.C. V HANLEY TOWN | /colnefootballclub @colne_fc OVERALL An enjoyable day out at the DCBL Stadium, friendly hosts, good food, impressive stadium. Just not non league. Its odd to score them down for it, but it doesn’t have character, give me Holt House any day! 8/10 35/50 Thankfully this visit was different, and myself and Andrew Sharpe had a great chat with a really friendly steward prior to kick off. The home officials who I spoke to were very friendly, too A few rogue shouts from one of their fans didn’t manage to affect todays score Very friendly club THE LIONS DEN
