Promotional mix and the role of promotion P2 The role of promotion is extremely important for any company. Even if an organisation has the best products and services sold at the best price and in the best place, if none of the target customers have heard about the product, it won’t sell.

Evaluating and justifying a promotional mix

In order to evaluate and justify the promotional mix used by an organisation in relation to its marketing objectives, it is necessary to research the promotional mix that the company has used in the past, and what its marketing aims and objectives were for that promotion. In order to evaluate the promotional mix sufficiently, you will need to explain whether you believe the organisation has met those objectives or not and describe why you think is the case. It is also important to give a detailed description of any improvements the organisation could have made in order to achieve its objectives more effectively.

You will need to carry out detailed research to decide whether the promotional mix was a success and met the marketing objectives. You must also describe why you believe the organisation chose the particular promotional mix in order to achieve its objectives. Did you know?

All of the elements of the marketing mix convey the same message to potential customers. For example, think of an iPhone advert – it shows customers exactly what the phone can do, promoting the product’s benefits and features. The price is such that it gives the impression of quality and the promotion reinforces this quality message. The promotion must not contradict this message, for example, Apple is unlikely to produce direct mail to promote its latest iPhone! And the place where iPods are sold also communicates its quality and unique qualities (think of the Apple shops).

Content is clearly labelled as relevant for Pass, Merit or Distinction level

Many products and services exist within what is known as a product range. For example, Walkers has a range of crisps such as Walkers Crisps, Quavers and Doritos. Walkers chooses its promotion to best promote the product range, even though the different products are aimed to suit different market segments, different tastes and different price expectations. The role of promotion is to convey the product range’s features and benefits, and this is particularly important if the organisation is trying to promote a new product. Also, by promoting a range of products, the organisation is not only cutting costs, as it does not have to produce several different types of promotion, it is also establishing the corporate image and reputation in the minds of the customers by showing that all of its products are of a similar high quality. This often means that customers then choose to buy other products in the range based on the good name. When an organisation has developed a new product, promotion plays a large role in launching it onto the market. This may be in the form of product or market trials (i.e. the organisation may choose to place the product in selected stores to test customer reactions to it) or sales promotions in order to tempt potential customers to purchase the product.

Discuss • In groups, discuss any experiences you have had of market trials or sales promotions. • Make a list of them and then decide why the organisation decided to use this form of promotion.
