Introduction Ask pupils if they know of any stories featuring monsters, such as The Gruffalo and Zog, and discuss what features monsters can have. What are the pupils’ favourite monsters? Which are the scariest monsters they can think of?

Clay monsters and story scribing Gather the pupils in an area in the school grounds where there are some trees, sticks, leaves, stones and flowers (or bring a selection of these natural materials with you). Spread the tarpaulin on the ground and, with the pupils, make a mixture of clay/mud/ water in a big bowl. The final consistency should be like cake mixture. Encourage the pupils to describe what the mud feels like. Model words such as ‘texture’ and ‘consistency’, and talk together about what a descriptive sentence is (e.g. ‘the mud is wet’) and what a great descriptive sentence might look like (e.g. ‘the mud is slippery, cool and squishy’). Allow the pupils to experiment and play with the mud, and provide sticks for any pupils who are not willing to touch it. Spread out the selection of natural materials on the tarpaulin. Split the pupils into pairs or threes. Explain that they are going to make their own monster faces on the trees or 12
