Dicey subtraction Strand: Number – addition and subtraction Learning objective: To be able to subtract a two-digit number and ones. You will need: whiteboards, whiteboard pens, board rubbers, 1–6 and 1–9 dice, base 10 equipment 1. Say: Today we are going to learn more about subtraction. 2. Ask: What is subtraction? 3. Say: One example of subtraction is take away. 4. Say: Today we will be subtracting a one-digit number from a two-digit number. 5. Write the number 68 and draw a number line on the whiteboard. Show this using base 10. 6. Roll a 1–6 die to generate a number to take away, e.g. 5. 7. Ask: What is 68 subtract 5? 8. Ask: How do you know? Can you show me on your board? 9. Explain that we can count backwards using a number line or take away using apparatus. 10. Write 68 at the end of a number line and, as a group, draw the jumps backwards as you subtract. 11. Count backwards together. Say: 67, 66, 65, 64, 63. 12. Repeat this activity with different numbers. 13. Ask pupils to investigate what happens when we subtract into the previous 10, e.g. 23 – 5. Say: We exchange one of our tens for 10 ones. Can the pupils show this using equipment?
Key checks: Can the pupils explain their thinking and verbalise how they know the answer? Are the pupils using the correct vocabulary: subtract, take away, minus, difference? Extension: Give the pupils numbers close to the tens barrier and a 1–9 dice, e.g. 71 – 8 = 73. Support: Provide each pupil with a 100 square/number line filled in to help them count on. Do not cross over the tens barrier until confident, e.g. 43 – 3 = 40 followed by 43 – 5 = 38. 18
