Welcome to CONEL – the top quality alternative to sixth form study.

Whether you want to go to university, start a course or go into an apprenticeship, you will find CONEL an excellent choice.

We’re the top college in England for student satisfaction in the FE Choices Survey 2016/17, and were named the best in London and in the top 20 nationally for employer satisfaction in 2015/16.

Over 300 of our students went on to university last September and around 60% were in full-time work within six months of finishing their studies.

You can choose from dozens of courses, which are free for 16 to 18s, or an apprenticeship in one of 36 different industries.

Our teachers are experts in their fields and have many years of industry experience to give you the skills to start your career.

Apply online at www.conel.ac.uk/courses or use the freepost form in this Guide. You’ll receive an email or a letter to tell you that we have received your application.

If you apply online we will send you a link to a calendar so that you can book an interview. If you apply using the application form we’ll reply to you by letter.

At your interview, we’ll give you a ‘Certificate of Offer’ setting out any conditions, such as exam grades, you need and how to enrol, and then send you an email or a letter to confirm your offer.

Once we have your offer we’ll send you an email or letter later in the year to book your enrolment date and time, this usually takes place in June for enrolment dates in September.

At enrolment, we’ll finalise any details and give you your ID card so you’re ready to start your course or apprenticeship.

English and Maths

Whatever your chosen career, you’ll need to have a good standard of English and maths. If you’re looking to resit your GCSEs or improve your language and numeracy skills, we’ll ensure you make the grade.

Study Programmes

Study Programmes for 16 to 18s

At CONEL you’ll receive a balanced Study Programme, including a core vocational course and English and maths, if you did not gain grades 9-4 (A*-C) at GCSE. The programme also includes work experience, work-related learning, enrichment activities and supervised study to support your studies.

Core Vocational Learning Programme

This is your main course of study and will require you to attend college to a set timetable, which will usually be around 15 hours a week. If you do not have GCSE English and maths grades 9-4 (A*-C) you will also need to study for these subjects alongside your course.

Continuous Professional Development

You’ll have group Continuous Professional Development and one to one sessions with your Learning Manager, including support with CV writing, careers advice and university applications.

English and Maths

All 16 to 18s who have not attained GCSE English and maths at grades 9-4 (A*-C) must study these subjects alongside their main courses. Those with a grade 3 (D) will need to resit these exams until they achieve at least a grade 4 (C).

Work Experience and Employability

At CONEL you’ll take part in work placements and gain employability skills to give you a head start in your career.

These include: • Work placements and paid internships • Work with industry professionals on course-related projects • Employer visits to the College and their workplaces • Volunteering activities with various community projects • Coaching and advice from business mentors

Enrichment

We offer a wide range of sports and enrichment activities throughout the year to support your personal development.

Students’ Union

What is the Students’ Union?

The Students’ Union is the voice of the students and will act on your behalf including: • Representing you to the College’s teachers and managers at regular forums.

• Helping to set up clubs and societies that matter to you, from five-a-side football leagues to entrepreneurs’ clubs.

• Campaigning on the issues that are important to you such as environmental or housing issues.

Students’ Union elections

All students are members of the Students’ Union.

As a member of the Students’ Union you can vote for other members, called the Students’ Union Executive, to represent you.

You are able to stand for any of the elected posts, including President, Welfare Officer, Finance Officer and many more.

Student Ambassadors Student Ambassadors are students of all ages who provide voluntary support and represent the College at events.

Some of the events Student Ambassadors have helped at in the past include:

Student Ambassadors are given an Ambassador Passport, which is signed after each event they attend and comments on how well they provided support.

Being a Student Ambassador is a great way to boost your CV, with the College also providing additional employer references to all those who volunteer.

Business Management Academy in partnership with Career Ready

Our Business Management Career Academy run in partnership with Career Ready will turn your passion for business into real job opportunities.

The Academy offers paid summer internships and work placements with leading companies, such as BP, Barclays and Capital.

You will also have the chance to attend workshops from top industry professionals to help develop your leadership and business skills.

The Academy is open to all 16 to 18s enrolled on a Business Management Diploma Level 3.

Our Accounting Academy will give you the best possible start in your financial career while developing your leadership skills and self-confidence.

Run in partnership with the charity Leadership Through Sport and Business (LTSB), the Academy offers a pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship scheme.

LTSB helps young people to access careers in accounting, business and finance with leading companies and support from football club foundations.

The Academy is open to 16 to 21s with five GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C), with a minimum grade 6 (B) in maths and English.

IT Academy

in partnership with risual Our IT Academy will equip you with hi-tech skills and expertise to succeed in this exciting industry.

Launched in partnership with IT services and consultancy firm risual, the academy was set up to meet a growing demand for digital skills It includes a Microsoft Showcase Classroom, featuring Surface Pro computers and Surface Hub digital displays to support your project work.

The Academy also offers an apprenticeship scheme and workshops with industry experts to boost your prospects of working in IT.

Vocational Skills Courses are an excellent alternative to A-levels and are designed to train you for a specific job or for further study, including university.

We offer a diverse range of courses from Entry Level to Level 3 to give you the knowledge and experience to get a job in your choice of career.

If you are aged 16 to 18 these course are free as your tuition fees are covered by the Government.

Apprenticeships

‘Doing an apprenticeship was the best decision I ever made’ Georgia Hughes, Clinical Care Apprentice

We have 30 years’ experience in apprenticeships and currently work with around 370 employers to train more than 1,000 apprentices.

The best thing about an apprenticeship is that you get to earn while you learn, usually spending four days a week training on the job and one day a week at college.

You’ll pay no tuition fees, with your employer covering the cost through schemes like the Apprenticeship Levy, unlike university where you’ll pay up to £9,000 a year.

We also run pre-apprenticeships, which are 12-15 week courses to fast-track you into an apprenticeship to start your career.

Higher Education

‘I developed a high level of expertise for university’ Jaron Semper, HND Games Development Hundreds of our Level 3 students secure places on degree courses at university each year, such as Brunel and King’s College London.

Alternatively, you could choose to stay at CONEL and study for a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) at Levels 4 and 5.

With these qualifications you just need a year’s additional study at university to top up to a degree.

Alongside these qualifications the College runs Level 4 courses in Accounting, Childcare and Hair and Beauty.

CONEL also offers Foundation and Honours Degrees in Counselling, in partnership with Middlesex University, and postgraduate qualifications.

If you’re aged 16 to 18 and are enrolled on a full-time course you do not have to pay any tuition fees.

Employers pay for apprenticeships

Your employer will pay your tuition fees through the Apprenticeship Levy and other financial schemes introduced by the Government.

Higher education need not be expensive

Our Higher National Diploma and Higher National Certificate fees are £5,787 a year, compared to a university degree at £9,000 a year.
