We will do everything we can to make your time at college rewarding and successful.

As a student at the College we will support you to achieve your qualification and to progress to the next stage of your chosen career.

On the following pages you can read our Student Charter, designed to ensure that each of you has the best possible chance of success. On the inside back cover you will find a copy of our Student Code of Conduct.

This is a diverse college; each one of you is unique and important to us. We will listen to you and take any comments and suggestions you make seriously. You can find a comments form at reception or on your MyDay app.

Study Programmes

Study Programmes for 16-18 year olds

Study Programmes ensure all 16-18 students receive a balanced programme of learning. This includes a main core qualification in a vocational area along with English and maths for those who did not achieve grades 9 - 4 (previously A* - C) in GCSE. Study Programmes also include work experience, work related learning, enrichment activities, supervised study and trips and visits to support the student’s learning programme.

Core vocational learning programme

Your core learning programme is your main course. This is timetabled for the majority of the 15 hours each week you attend College. In addition to your main course, you will study maths and English if you have not achieved GCSE Maths and English grades 9 - 4 (previously A* - C).

English and Maths

All 16-18 year olds who have not achieved grades 9 - 4 (previously A* - C) in GCSE will continue to study maths and English at the College alongside their main courses. Young people with a Grade D in GCSE English or maths will need to resit their exams until they achieve a grade 4 - 5 (previously grade C) at GCSE or higher. These requirements have been set out by Government and apply to all colleges and schools.

Enrichment Enjoy yourself by playing sports, going on outings and get involved in the Students’ Union. CONEL offers a wide range of sports, clubs and societies to take part in. There are lunchtime sports sessions each day such as basketball, table tennis and football, plus a great gym. As well as sports you can take part in trips to theme parks, visits to cinemas, museums, plays and other cultural activities.

Supervised Self Study

You can study in the Learning Centre and our staff will be on hand to answer their questions and help them find the resources, books and internet articles they need for their work.

When you become a student

We want you to have an enjoyable time throughout your college life and achieve success.

2. Education that helps you succeed You will have excellent, friendly and supportive teachers who are experts in their field; you will also learn life and employment skills, such as communication skills, study skills and IT skills. We will do our best to help you to complete your assignments and assessments. However, you will have to work hard, take responsibility for your learning, attend regularly and punctually and meet deadlines set.

You can expect that: • Your learning needs will be assessed and you may be offered extra help with basic skills • You will have highly qualified, experienced and committed, teachers, tutors and support staff • Your classes will start and end on time and you will be informed of any unavoidable changes • Your lecturers will be actively involved in your learning and will use a variety of teaching, learning and assessment methods, including the latest technology • You will be well prepared for your future in employment or higher education • Assignments and assessments will be set and returned with comments/grades within an agreed timescale • Assessments will be clear and fair • You will be informed of the appeals procedure • If your course includes a work placement, we will help you find one

3. Your learning manager Continuing professional development (CPD) with your learning manager will be an important part of your course. Your learning manager will: • Help you to set individual learning targets to stretch you to your full potential. You will have an Electronic Individual Learning Plan (e-ILP), which you can quickly use to check on your progress at any time • Provide regular reviews and feedback on your individual progress • Help you to study more effectively • Inform you of extra support you can get to help with your learning • Help you with career and higher education plans • Develop skills for employment

4. Supporting you while you study You will be learning in a caring and supportive environment, which will include: • Up-to-date classrooms, IT rooms with the latest technology, labs and workshops • Facilities for individual study • Access to appropriate IT both inside and outside the classroom • Up-to-date learning resources You will also have access to information, advice and guidance on educational, career and personal matters. If you have a problem that affects your learning, first speak to your Learning Manager who can point you in the right direction. We can provide help with: • • • •

5. We want to know what you think During your time with us you will have opportunities to comment on your course and the services offered by the College. Your comments are very valuable to us. Make your views known by: • Taking part in surveys and meetings • Talking to your Class Representative who can speak on your behalf.

Of course, you could become a Class Representative yourself.

• Attending School Council, Centre Council and Students’ Union meetings.

• Having your views represented on the Governing Body

The Prevent strategy What is the Prevent strategy?

Prevent is a Government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorist or extremist causes.

The Prevent strategy covers all types of terrorism and extremism, including the extreme right wing, violent Islamist groups and other causes.

How Prevent applies to the College?

The College, as well as other organisations, has a duty to safeguard learners from radicalisation and extremism.

This means we have a responsibility to protect learners from extremist and violent views in the same way we protect them from drugs or gang violence.

Importantly, we can provide a safe place for students to discuss these issues so they better understand how to protect themselves.

What does this mean in practice?

Many of the things we already do in College to help learners to become successful on their courses and active members of society also contribute to the Prevent strategy.

These include: • Promoting diversity • Challenging prejudices and racist comments • Developing critical thinking skills • Developing a strong, positive self-identity • Promoting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of learners, as well as British values such as democracy We will also protect learners from the risk of radicalisation, for example by using filters on the internet to make sure they can’t access extremist and terrorist material, or by vetting visitors who come into College to work with students.

How does Prevent relate to British values?

The Prevent strategy is not just about discussing extremism itself, it is also about teaching students values such as tolerance and mutual respect.

British values include: • Democracy • The rule of law • Individual liberty and mutual respect • Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs The College will make sure any discussions are suitable and appropriate for our learners

Is extremism really a risk in our area?

Extremism can take many forms, including political, religious and misogynistic extremism. Some of these may be a bigger threat in our area than others.

We will give learners the skills to protect them from any extremist views they may encounter, now or later in their lives.

Student Code of Conduct

The Student Code of Conduct is to help you succeed and to make your College a safe place to learn.

As a member of the College you should: 1. Attend all classes on time and inform your teacher immediately

if you are going to be late or absent.

2. Meet all deadlines for your work and complete it to the very highest

standard you are able to.

3. Wear your ID card at all times so that it can be seen and if requested

hand it to a member of staff for inspection.

4.

Remember to bring the equipment you need to lessons.

5.

Make sure all work is your own. Do not cheat or plagiarise (copy) other people’s work.

6.

Show respect and tolerance to all.

7.

Do not wear hoods in College.

8.

Follow health and safety procedures.

9.

Show respect for College property and the possessions of others.

10. Never bring alcohol or weapons to College.

11. Observe the College’s “no drugs” and “no smoking” policies.

12. Follow the College’s ICT Acceptable Use Policy.

13. Follow instructions from staff when on College premises, and help

create a safe environment where everyone can learn.

14. Follow College rules and act in a way that maintains the College’s

good reputation whilst in the College and in the local community.

15. Make sure your Learning Manager has your correct contact details, if your phone number or address changes.

16. Inform your Learning Manager if you become aware of any safeguarding concerns including bullying or radicalisation towards violent extremism.

17. The College has a zero tolerance policy regarding threats or acts of

violence towards staff or students.

Failure to follow the code of conduct will result in disciplinary action.
