Welcome to London’s Top College. We have the best overall student success rate of any General FE College in London and the best Level 3 (A Level equivalent) pass rates too.

We offer Advanced Level vocational courses – BTECs and others – which offer a high quality alternative to A Level study. Doing these courses helps you keep your options open: we prepare our students to progress on to an apprenticeship or into higher education or to go straight into a good quality job. Last year over 300 of our students went straight on to university.

A Levels are classroom based courses with more assessment by a final exam; they suit those who like learning the traditional way. Our courses are designed to introduce ambitious students to the real world of work, and most include real-life assignments and work experience with leading employers. Most of our lecturers have many years’ experience in their industry and will help you develop you skills on up-to-date equipment and facilities.

Coming to CONEL you will work alongside adults and mature students, many with years of work experience already. It will be exciting, relevant and enjoyable. Study Programmes for 16-18 year olds

Study Programmes ensure all 16-18 students receive a balanced programme of learning. This includes a main core qualification in a vocational area along with English and maths for those who did not achieve grades 9 - 4 (A* - C) in GCSE. Study Programmes also include work experience, work related learning, enrichment activities, supervised study and trips and visits to support your learning programme.

Core Vocational Learning Programme

Your core learning programme is your main course. This is timetabled for the majority of the 15 hours each week you attend College. In addition to your main course, you will study maths and English if you have not achieved GCSE Maths and English grades 9 - 4 (A* - C).

English and Maths

All 16-18 year olds who have not achieved grades 9 - 4 (A* - C) in GCSE will continue to study maths and English at the College alongside their main courses. Young people with a Grade D in GCSE English or maths will need to resit their exams until they achieve a grade 4 (C) at GCSE or higher. These requirements have been set out by Government and apply to all colleges and schools.

Why English and Maths are very important • You’ll earn on average 7% more an hour with GCSE grades 9 - 5 (A* - C) in English and Maths, and 20% more compared to someone with no qualifications at all.

• 98% of Apprenticeships require GCSEs at grades 9 - 5 (A* - C) in English and Maths as an entry requirement.

• The entry requirements for the majority of universities are grades 9 -5 (A* - C) in English and Maths in addition to your main qualifications.

Work Experience and Employment Skills

Work experience is built into your programme and you should expect at least two full weeks each year. This helps you gain the skills that you need to get a job or an Apprenticeship.

Work related learning can include;

• Work placements and paid internships

On a work placement you will have a structured work programme and on a paid internship you will be placed with an employer and have a paid job.

• Live briefs

You and your class will be able to work on professional projects with local businesses and employers, which are related to your course.

• Employer visits

You will be able to hear from successful business men and women at college and also visit workplaces.

• Volunteering

You will be able to volunteer in community and social enterprise projects such as parks and museums to centres for homeless people.

• Meeting business mentors

You may have the opportunity to be coached and advised by a successful business professional.

Enrichment

Enjoy yourself by playing sports in one of our Sports Academies (football, basketball, boxing, athletics), going on outings or you can get involved in the Students’ Union. CONEL offers a wide range of sports, clubs and societies to take part in. There are lunchtime sports sessions each day such as basketball, table tennis and football, plus a great gym. As well as sports, you can take part in trips to theme parks, visits to films, museums, plays and other cultural activities.

Supervised Self Study

Some courses have built in supervised study and additional workshops in the Learning Centre and our staff will be on hand to answer your questions and help you find the resources, books and internet articles you need for you work.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Each week you will have a group Continuous Professional Development (CPD) session with your Learning Manager where you’ll get support with CV writing, careers advice and guidance, UCAS applications and progression advice along

One to One with your Learning Manager

Your Learning Manager will meet with you every 6 weeks to set your targets and support you in reaching your goals. You can interact with your Learning Manager online or face to face, and if things aren’t going well they may see you much more often to support you through your programme.
