Apprenticeships

Your passport or UK birth certificate All students have to bring proof of identity and immigration status in the UK.

Choose from our apprenticeships at www.conel.ac.uk/work. During Enrolment, come into the College at either our Enfield or Tottenham Centres.

Exam results and certificates If you have a conditional offer based on the grades you achieve, you will need to bring proof of your results.

You will be asked to show you have the qualifications required by the employer to do the apprenticeship.

If not, you will be required to do an assessment.

Reference You will need to provide a reference.

Ideally this will be from your tutor or employer.

Applicants will then be selected by the College and sent to the employer.

The employer will invite applicants to interview to decide if they are able to offer them an apprenticeship.

Fees and concessions Check our website for tuition fees. If you are 16 – 18 years old, courses are free. if you are aged over 19 – 23 concessions may apply. If you are aged over 19 and applying for a Level 3 course, you will need to apply for a 19 Plus Advanced Learning Loan.* For most courses you can pay in eight instalments. *If you are aged 19 – 23 and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification you may not need to apply for a 19 Plus Advanced Learning Loan.

Vocational Skills Courses

Vocational Skills Courses are an excellent alternative to A-levels and are designed to train you for a specific job or for further study, including university.

We offer a diverse range of courses from Entry Level to Level 3 to give you the knowledge and experience to get a job in your choice of career.

If you are aged 16 to 18 these course are free as your tuition fees are covered by the Government, and if you are 19 or over you can take out an Advanced Learning Loan to fund your studies – see page 16.

Don’t worry if you didn’t get the grades you wanted in your GCSE English and Maths exams, you can retake them with us, and even study them alongside vocational courses.

At CONEL we also provide Supported Learning courses to help those with Special Educational Needs to gain life and work skills, as well as a basic level of English and Maths.

Higher Education

‘College went above and beyond to get me to university’ Luke Taylor, Access to Higher Education Diploma in Computing Our Higher Education and Access Couses give you the chance to further your studies to improve your job prospects or get a place at university, or take a degree or postgraduate qualification at the College.

Studying for a Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma is a much cheaper way to a degree than paying university tuition fees, with just a year’s additional study at university needed to top up to a degree - see page 16.

You can also study for Foundation and Honours Degrees in Counselling, in partnership with Middlesex University.

Our Teacher Education courses include a Postgraduate Certificate in Compulsory Secondary Education, and other qualifications focusing on teaching disabled children and education and training, some validated by Canterbury Christ Church University.

FREE Skills for Employment Courses Looking for work and want to boost your job prospects?

Throughout the year we run free Skills for Employment courses to help unemployed people get into work.

You can choose from: • Cleaning and Support Services Covers health and safety, hygiene standards, using and storing cleaning chemicals.

• Business Administration Gives an introduction to office work, including computing, communication and producing business documents.

• Customer Service Provides customer communication skills, meeting customer needs and handling complaints.

• Customer Service – Retail Provides customer communication skills, meeting customer needs and handling complaints, with an emphasis on retail.

• Basic IT Learn basic IT and computing skills and software applications, including Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer.

Apprenticeships

‘Doing an Apprenticeship was Georgia Hughes - Clinical Care Apprentice We have 30 years’ experience in apprenticeships and currently work with around 370 employers to train more than 1,000 apprentices. We also offer a Level 4 AAT Accountancy Technician Apprenticeship for those looking to further develop their skills.

The best thing about an apprenticeship is that you get to earn while you learn, usually spending four days a week training on the job and one day a week at college.

You’ll pay no tuition fees, with your employer covering the cost through schemes like the Apprenticeship Levy, unlike university where you’ll pay up to £9,000 a year – see page 16.

In 2015/16 our Apprenticeship achievement rate was 6.5% above the national average and the same year 95% of employers said they were satisfied with the training we offer.

And, if that wasn’t enough, we have a dedicated Apprenticeship Team to support you every step of the way.

Pre-apprenticeships are 12-15 week courses that offer a fast-track to your chosen career.

They are a stepping stone to apprenticeships and prepare you for work by giving you the skills and experience needed in your chosen industry in just three months.

Attain an AAT Level 2 in three months that would normally take one year.

• Business Develop the commercial and financial skills to prepare you for an apprenticeship in Business in six weeks.

• Dry Wall Lining Get a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card to allow you to work on a building site.

• Rail Track Engineering Maintenance Gain a Personal Track Safety (PTS) certificate to allow you to work on a railway.

Finance

Investing in your future Vocational Skills Courses are FREE for 16 to 18s If you’re aged 16 to 18 and are enrolled on a full-time course at CONEL you do not have to pay any tuition fees.

19 Plus Advanced Learner Loan If you’re 19 or over when you start your course and have lived in the UK for at least three years, you could be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan.

You do not have to pay the loan back until you are earning more than £21,000 a year. If your earnings drop below £21,000 the repayments will stop until you earn more again.

If after 30 years you have not earned over £21,000 you don’t have to pay back the loan.

How loan repayments are calculated The loan is paid back at 9% of your income over £21,000.

For example, you would pay back £7 a month if you earn £22,000 a year or £30 a month if you earn £25,000 a year.

Employers pay for Apprenticeships If you are successful in applying for an Apprenticeship your employer will pay your tuition fees through the Apprenticeship Levy and other financial schemes introduced by the Government.

The Apprenticeship Levy The Apprenticeship Levy came into effect in May 2017 and requires all businesses with an annual pay bill of more than £3million to invest 0.5% of their monthly pay bill in Apprenticeships.

Higher Education need not be expensive Our Higher National Diploma and Higher National Certificate fees are £5,787 a year, compared to a university degree at £9,000 a year. On successful completion of your diploma or certificate, you only need to study at university for a year to gain a degree.

Graduation, sports success and great achievements Our Graduation Ceremony in June was a spectacular occasion and exemplified many of the fantastic achievements at CONEL this year.

Principal Andy Forbes congratulated more than 100 students, apprentices and employers at the event held at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham (pages 22-23).

Our Sports Academies have set the pace as we take a look back at some of our outstanding successes and events in recent months.

The College saw a first Association of Colleges championship win for our Basketball Academy, a third successive gold at the English Karate Championships and a talented footballer join Bolton Wanderers (pages 18-19).

CONEL also saw an electrical apprentice named WorldSkills UK best electrician in the South of England (page 21), and rail contractor Kelly Rail take on a group of apprentices to work on London Underground (page 25).

A striking look created by one of our hairdressing students was the best of the entries from 18 colleges across London in a competition judged by top stylist Patrick Cameron (page 24).

Our Public Services students helped organise the Pan London Public Services Youth Day at Alexandra Palace, the curtain-raiser to Europe’s largest amateur boxing tournament (page 20).

Three of our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students were recognised in this year’s Jack Petchey Achievement Awards (page 21), while a nursing student was also honoured by the Metropolitan Police for voluntary service (page 20).

Chloe wins third successive British Karate Championships gold

British champion Chloe Lydon.

A karate champion has set her sights on a world title after winning her third successive gold in the British Karate Federation 4 Nations Championships.

Chloe Lydon, 17, who trains at our Martial Arts Academy, took the title in the tournament, which includes fighters from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Her win follows a third gold in the English Karate Federation National Championships and a gold in the French International Open Championships earlier this year.

Chloe said: “It was a good fight and one I needed to win, as the selections for the World Championships are coming up in July."

Football Academy unbeaten in first international tournament

CONEL's Football Academy team in Barcelona.

Our Football Academy returned home undefeated after competing in their first international tournament in Spain.

Players from the Academy, run in partnership with Leyton Orient FC, took part in Mare Nostrum Cup near Barcelona in April.

Each year the competition attracts more than 200 teams from under-10s to under-19s from around the world.

During the tour, the players also had the opportunity to visit Camp Nou, the home to European giants FC Barcelona.

Basketball Academy nets first league championship Our Basketball Academy team, known as the Warriors, have been crowned league champions for the first time.

The team won the Association of Colleges Sport Basketball East Men’s League with a 59-55 win away to Peterborough Regional College's side the Pumas in their final game of the season.

Alex Malesi, 18, one of the top scorers in the match, said: “It feels incredible to be league champions. We put in a lot of training and effort and I felt we deserved it."

Teammate Fredrick Ode, 18, added: “We have a good team spirit. If we did not have that understanding, there’s no way we would’ve won.”

The Basketball Academy, run in partnership with the London School of Basketball (LSB), was launched in 2014.

Head Coach Jay Williams said: “This is a massive achievement. The whole team has worked really hard all season. Hopefully, this is the first of many championship wins."

Football ace secures scholarship with Bolton Wanderers A talented footballer from our Football Academy has won a scholarship with newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers.

Ruben Junior, 17, who played youth football for European giants Benfica in his native Portugal before moving to the UK in 2015, will join the Trotters at the end of June.

"I feel very happy. It’s like winning the jackpot,” said Ruben, who previously won a trial at Leyton Orient.

“It’s a big step and the opportunity I’ve been waiting for. I just want to continue to work hard so I can improve and hopefully I can get to train with the first team."

The Football Academy is coached by exprofessional footballers Mark Bentley and Darren Baker with teams competing in the Association of Colleges Football League.

Students pack a punch at Pan London Public Services Youth Day Students delivered a knockout performance when they gave their support at the curtain-raiser for Europe’s largest amateur boxing tournament.

The group, from the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL), provided voluntary help at the Pan London Public Services Youth Day at Alexandra Palace on 15 June.

The event in the Great Hall marked the first day of the Haringey Box Cup, which has been running since 2008 and in the past featured world champions: Anthony Joshua, Nicola Adams and Chris Eubank.

Each year, around 2,000 students from secondary schools and colleges across London attend the event run by Haringey Police Community Boxing Club, where they can find out more about Public Services careers and opportunities in sport.

Jonathan Ellis-Beattie, 20, who is studying for the Higher National Certificate, said: “We were responsible for all the visitors coming in and wanted to provide a good service, so there was quite a bit of pressure on us, but it all went well.”

Student honoured for voluntary service to Met Police Access to Nursing student Mek Mehmet-Yesil has been honoured with an award for devoting two years’ voluntary service to the Metropolitan Police.

Mek, 47, was among five volunteers receiving awards at the Haringey Borough Commander’s Commendation Ceremony at Alexandra Palace.

She was recognised for her reception work at Wood Green Custody Centre in Haringey, but has also worked with other emergency services and on awareness campaigns.

“I am overwhelmed. It’s not something I expected,” said Mek, on receiving her award from Borough Commander Helen Millichap.

“It’s very rewarding to see the difference you are making in the community.”

Apprentice named WorldSkills UK best electrician in South of England

Yordan Tomov was awarded WorldSkills UK best electrician in the South of England.

Bright spark Yordan Tomov has been named WorldSkills UK best electrician in the South of England.

The 24-year-old Electrical Installation apprentice scooped a gold medal in the National Qualifiers of the Construction and Infrastructure competition.

WorldSkills UK is the country’s largest skills, apprenticeships and careers event and aims to inspire young people to develop world class skills.

Yordan’s win means he will now have the opportunity to go on and compete in the National Finals at Birmingham NEC in November.

For the National Qualifier, he had to completely build and test three electrical boards and circuits in five hours against three other competitors, which were then inspected by a panel of expert judges.

“I couldn’t believe I had won. It took a whole day to sink in,” said Yordan.

“The competition was exciting and the pressure was on to complete the projects in a limited time, but I felt well prepared and was confident I would finish.”

Yordan is completing his Apprenticeship at R&I Electrical Services in Tottenham.

ESOL students praised in Jack Petchey Awards Three students who do not speak English as their first language have been named among the winners in this year’s Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards.

Vergil Vergilov, 17, Esmerelda Imeraj, and Sopiya Ragunathan, both 18, were recognised for their exceptional work on our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses.

Principal Andy Forbes presented the awards and £250 each to the winners from the Jack Petchey Foundation, which provides grants for projects that benefit young people.

Esmeralda, who progressed from ESOL to a Business Diploma, said: “It feels great to win this award as it motivates me for the future. I want to keep working hard."

The ceremony then began with film shows and Manga style animations mixed with by performances from music students.

Top hair stylist Patrick Cameron left ‘raven’ about student’s winning look

A hairdressing student’s striking ‘gothic raven’ inspired look has been named the winner in a competition for aspiring stylists at colleges across London.

Suzanne Simmonds, 36, scooped the first prize in the contest run by Chris & Sons in Enfield for her unique style in the contest, which was judged by top stylist Patrick Cameron.

The College has now produced a winner in the competition on three occasions, the other times in 2016 and 2015.

Suzanne said: “Winning this competition has given me more confidence. Patrick is the guru of long hair, and to have someone of his stature say they like your work is amazing.”

Suzanne’s winning design was one of the many styles created by students from 18 London colleges entered in the competition, including five from CONEL.

Each participant had three hours to create styles on their own themes, which included ice maiden, modern African woman, 1940s, Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatter and a spring bride.

Suzanne won a two-day masterclass with Patrick and a Babyliss Italia Brava hair dryer and Perfect Curl, and was also presented with a trophy.

Congratulating Suzanne on her success, Patrick said: “I absolutely loved the ‘raven’ because of the level of detail in the hair and the balance.

“The inspiration from the character to the execution, and the amazing outfit was on point. There was nowhere it fell down and she deserved to win and I think she is going to be a great hairdresser.”

Young rail engineering apprentices start career on London Underground Aspiring rail engineers have secured Apprenticeships working on London Underground with Kelly Rail.

The new apprentices were chosen by the company after completing a PreApprenticeship in Rail Track Engineering at the College’s Enfield Centre.

They are now working on London Underground with some additional work on Network Rail sites.

“I’m really enjoying it,” said apprentice Mohammad Ali, 20.

“It’s helping me to achieve what I want to in life, and I really appreciate what the College has done for me.”

Another apprentice, Norman Nyikadzino, 24, said: “I was getting to the age when I needed to find a career. I heard about the course from a friend who had a lot of great things to say about it.”

Kelly Rail is part of Kelly Group and one the of largest rail contractors in the UK specialising in signalling, telecommunications, electrification and civil engineering.

Rail Track Engineering apprentices have begun careers with Kelly Rail.

Actors bring characters from Of Mice and Men to life GCSE English students were given a masterclass in understanding character when a pair of actors ran a workshop on ‘Of Mice and Men’.

Paul Sayers and Simon Bolton, from Rooftop Theatre Company in Shropshire, performed extracts from John Steinbeck’s classic US novel.

The story, based on the author’s own experiences, follows two migrants looking for work in California during the Great Depression in the 1920s.

GCSE English student Rosa Caiazza, 18, said: “I’ve read the book and the characters the actors performed were just how I imagined them to be. It really brought it to life.”
