PEA leaders at UWSOD encouraged classmates by offering Þnals week care packages for a club fundraiser that also served the purpose of sharing about why SPEA is a great organization to be a part of. Care packages included a customized message from the sender to the student and they were delivered during Þnals week. Recipients were invited to join SPEA and also informed that SPEA is great for building peer and professional connections during dental school and beyond. In addition, it was shared that SPEA has opportunities for learning about dental ethics outside the dental school curriculum. After a delicious lunch with shared Fellowship, author and Gonzaga University Student, Sophie Henderson, shared lessons learned on how leadership is an ever-evolving practice and commitment. Then, Linda Edgar, Immediate Past President of the American Dental Association, took the stage to impart leadership lessons that she has learned. Among those is “Lift as you climb,” meaning, bring others along with you in your leadership journey personally invite others to events such as Tri-College Day, nominate colleagues for fellowship, and reach out to the younger generation and offer your encouragement. All attendees were given a copy of Linda’s book, “Climb Every Mountain.” Finally, Larry Garetto, ethicist and Past-President of the American Society for Dental Ethics as well as the recipient of the John Gies Award, the highest honor the ACD can bestow upon a Fellow, facilitated conversations and gave guidance around the ethics of leadership. While the objectives of the day were to grow our leadership aptitude and enjoy fellowship amongst colleagues, the overarching goal was to raise money to support dental student scholarships.
OLarry Garetto, ACD WA Section Board Member, introduced the evening's keynote speaker, David Dean. Dean is an Attending in Oral Medicine at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington. He publishes widely and serves on the American Board of Oral Medicine and also as the coof the Oral Care Study Group in the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC). The day was widely enjoyed and there is much excitement around the 2026 program which will convene leading experts from diverse disciplines to explore the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence in modern dentistry. Tri-College Day moves beyond passive information delivery and challenges participants to think critically, ask better questions, and engage in thoughtful dialogue around AI in clinical practice.

ur Regency is a vast area covering British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and the International Sections outside of Europe. As such, we do much of our communications amongst Sections virtually, but during the month of May I greatly enjoyed visits to the Sections of Oregon (which also includes Idaho), Montana, and British Columbia. The 4 pillars of the College are Ethics, Professionalism, Leadership, and Excellence. Last year during my Section visits, I had the opportunity to share why the ACD pillar of professionalism is important to me. This year I focused on the pillar of leadership, as the ACD regards leadership not just as a management skill but as a moral and professional obligation to elevate the profession and serve the public good. In that regard, the College is focused on the mission of leadership and I hope to share with you ways that you can engage with ACD around leadership. The leadership of the College is strong and is there to uphold our recent strategic plan, which calls for recognizing and engaging the most talented and diverse emerging leaders in dentistry. You can support this by joining your Section leadership and by nominating colleagues. Fellowship is by invitation only, with leadership qualities and demonstrated leadership
Past Regent of ACD Regency 8, Larry Lawton, shared about the importance of attending the ACD Annual Meeting which will be on October 23-24 in Washington

Section Chair Morris encouraged nominations for ACD Fellowship of colleagues. A common characteristic shared by successful candidates for Fellowship is demonstrated leadership. Darcie offered for Fellows to reach out to her and others on the Board for help with reviewing nominations to help to ensure the success of the nomination.
Our Section Project Tri-College Day was very successful earlier this year with the theme of ‘leadership’ and plans are underway for March 2026 with the theme of ‘AI.’
Section Chair Morris celebrated that our Section was in the top 5 for Giving Tuesday 2024 and she encouraged participation for ACD Foundation giving.
Executive Director, Mike Graham, has grown support of our Section by ACD staff with the addition of Ben Kissinger. Ben’s role is to coordinate the nominations process as well as to support Sections. With the focus on improving our Section’s experience, administratively and programmatically, we hope to attract and retain dentists who are emerging as leaders in the profession. We have identiÞed an initial cohort of Section Leaders for this support that we call the Section Leadership Initiative (SLI). Approximately 10 new Section leaders will be invited each year to the SLI.

I attended SHIFT 7 in Rockville at the ACD Headquarters April 4-6th. SHIFT is a unique leadership intensive led by Past Regent, Sreenivas Koka, and largely underwritten by the ACD Foundation through the Paula Friedman Section Leadership Initiative. Each SHIFT is unique, as the attendees and the presenters are always different. SHIFT stands for Shifting the Future in dentistry and it’s leadership lessons are both completely ground-breaking and, conversely, time-tested; topics covered are dynamic and can be visited over and over with new lessons to be learned. If you are interested in attending SHIFT, please email suzan@acd.org.

SHIFT Workshops
The American College of Dentists supports leadership training through SHIFT workshops in various locations throughout the country, and even the world. These 2-day courses have very limited attendees in order to intentionally foster high-level communication, personal interactions, and build relationships amongst those attending. The workshops are typically at least partially led by Sreenivas Koka, a prosthodontist with an MBA from MIT as well as an ACD past Regent with much leadership experience, including being a former dental school dean and the Chair of the Department of Dental Specialties at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

We had a great Spring Leadership Retreat May 9-11th in San Antonio, TX where attendees felt empowered and encouraged. The hope for the new Spring Leadership Retreat is that all Section leaders and interested Fellows will take advantage of it at least once in the 5-year timeframe that we intend to run it. The 2026 Spring Leadership Retreat is being planned for April 30May 2, 2026 at Pillar and Post Resort in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario.
Another way the College is upholding mission around the pillar of leadership is the new Sweet Spot Leadership Program. This is a one-year learning model with both online and in-person content as well as live executive coaching sessions. Please reach out to me if you are interested.
The ACD Foundation not only sponsors the above leadership programs for Fellows, but also sponsors awards for students, as the Foundation helps Sections to recognize Outstanding Student Leaders through this ACD scholarship.
Through the Journal of the American College of Dentists (the JACD), the College publishes articles on leadership as well as encourages thought leadership and scholarly discussion.
In short, ACD is true to the focus on the pillar of leadership through recognition and celebration of ethical leaders, education and training around leadership, and through the publication of the JACD, where the College strives to maintain it’s recognition as the voice of ethics in our profession.

The ACD Leadership programming and continuing education is made possible through the ACD Foundation with special thanks to former Regent, Paula K. Former Regent Friedman’s intent is certainly recognized by current College leadership as Executive Director, Mike Graham, stated in his opening comments to the leadership retreat that “you don’t necessarily see change on the national level; you see it locally.”

Improvements to the Nominations Process
Keep up the good work on identifying dentists who represent the ideals of the American College of Dentists! The Credentials Committee, that reviewed each of the 445 nominations for Fellowship in 2025, reported that the quality of nominations was improved this year with a record 405 being invited for Fellowship at an approval rate of 91%. Several nominators over the years have expressed difficulties with maintaining confidentiality of the nomination, while at the same time obtaining enough information to accurately reflect a nominees potential for Fellowship. The ACD Board of Regents addressed this concern during the Spring Meeting and the College now allows for confidential conversations between the nominator and potential nominee so that the nominator can gauge the individuals interest in Fellowship and also obtain the curriculum vitae and other supporting information to complete a compelling nomination. Once the nomination has been submitted, information about the nomination must not be disclosed and discussion surrounding it must cease.
