Regent Report
Happy Summer Regency 1 ACD Fellows!
In this summer report, I wanted to share some information I recently received from our Executive Director, Mike Graham. When you review it, you will see the past six months have been incredibly productive at the ACD. The ACD is truly an active and vibrant organization. Here are some highlights that Mike provided about the College:
* Distributed over 7,000 Ethics Handbooks so far in 2025 to dentists and dental students around the country, providing a key resource to ethical problem solving.
* Held our first annual Spring Leadership Conference in 2025 to bring Section leaders together to improve our Section programming and administrative capabilities that will make the ACD Fellowship experience more enriching.
* Continued providing weekend leadership training to Fellows and non-Fellow dentists through the successful Shaping the Future (SHIFT) Leadership training program.
* Advanced Online Leadership Training: The ACD Board has approved a one-year online leadership training program that will help the next generation of dentist leaders lead the profession.
* Revamping the ACD Ethics Online Offerings to bring them up to date for dentists and students.
* Dramatically increased the number of nominations to the College for 2025 to over 400 which will bring new excitement and engagement to the College.
In early February 2025, the Regency 1 Leadership meeting was held in Boston, Massachusetts. Section leaders from the NE, NY and WNY Sections were in attendance. The National ACD President, Dr. Bob Faiella and the ACD Executive
Director, Mike Graham also participated. SPEA Leaders from SPEA Chapters in the Regency were also present representing UConn, Columbia, Tufts and BU. The photos included with my report are from our pre-Meeting dinner at the Harvard Club as well as the Meeting itself at the Seaport Hotel.
This Spring I had the privilege to attend a SHIFT Leadership training and it was an enriching and engaging learning experience. I encourage all of you to consider participating in the program which is held at various locations throughout the year. Additionally, I was part of the inaugural Spring Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The Conference was a great success and allowed for an excellent interaction between current & past National leadership with the current, past & future leaders at the Section level. The enthusiasm and passion for the ACD was palpable as we reviewed and discussed in small group sessions: “Recognizing Excellence” (in Nominations), “Becoming a

I would like to encourage all Fellows to sign up for the ACD Annual Meeting in Washington DC on October 23rd to 24th, 2025. The meeting has shifted a day and will be held on a Thursday and Friday this year. For the first time we will be holding Regency dinners on Thursday night. Please sign up for the Regency 1 Dinner when you register for the Annual Meeting!
In response to Feedback from Fellows, the Nomination process has been adjusted so that Nominators can now speak openly to their prospective nominees. Specifically,
Nominators are encouraged to ask if the Prospective candidate wants to be nominated and, if so, transparently ask for appropriate information to complete the Nomination form. Please note neither the nominator nor the candidate should speak to others about the nomination. Additionally, the rest of the process remains confidential.
As always, please reach out if you have any ACD related concerns or questions. I am here to help.
Have a wonderful summer!

Connecting with ACD Fellows and Carrying Out Our Strategic Plan
erhaps the very best part of my job is connecting with ACD Fellows from around the country either in person or through zoom meetings and sharing with them our activities and plans for the future. Early this year I visited New York City for their Section meeting and attended the Yankee Dental Meeting, both of which enjoyed significant turnouts by Fellows as well as dental students! So far this year, I have participated in over 20 Section meetings, most of which were in person. I have more meetings planned before we have the chance to get together at our Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.
We are progressing in every area of our strategic plan which makes my conversations with Fellows that much more enjoyable. Allow me to highlight our progress on three strategic goals.
Strategy one of our strategic plan focuses on upholding ACD’s position as a leader of our profession on ethics and professionalism. We measure that in part through the number of Fellows we nominate and induct each year. Last year, we nominated 349 candidates for Fellowship. In 2025, that number jumped to 445. We remain very hopeful that we will be inducting a record number of Fellows in Washington, DC this fall, perhaps more than 400 candidates Strategy two demands that we continue to recognize and engage the most talented and
diverse emerging leaders in dentistry. We are meeting this goal by working to improve all 51 Sections of the College both programmatically and administratively. We have (1) established a Section Leadership Initiative (choosing 10 Sections each year) that focuses on Section leader development; (2) improved the Model Section program in response to feedback from Fellows; and (3) are in the process of producing Section training videos on a myriad of topics important to Section leaders.
Strategy three is about investing in the continuous creation of ACD-branded professional development courses on ethics and leadership. Already we are in the process of updating our CE courses and videos on our ethics website and are developing our leadership pillar by launching our Sweet Spot Leadership online training program as well as planning two SHIFT (Shaping the Future) Leadership programs for 2026. We also held our first annual leadership conference this past May.
This is just the beginning. We have so many more activities that are planned for the future. So I ask that you continue to follow our progress and give some time to the College whenever you have the opportunity.

NY Section Chair Report
Chair: Dr. Lorna Flamer-Caldera

Greetings!
The New York Section of Regency 1 has had an eventful year so far, with more engagement, excitement, and elevation to come.
In January, I had the honor of attending the ACD Regency 1 Leadership Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. At the Saturday morning meeting, I presented a report of our section’s activities from 2024 and some of our plans for 2025. I was duly impressed by the breadth of activity the SPEA students present were involved in. These amazing young leaders displayed innovation and focus in their efforts and were articulate in their communication. The morning began with reports from ACD executive director Mr. Michael Graham and ACD president, Dr. Robert Faiella.
Our Annual Banquet was held February 4th. This well-attended gathering, during which I was installed a Section Chair, is always a great night to recognize excellence, longevity, and leadership. We were privileged to have executive director Graham in attendance as well as Regent Dr. Julie Connolly. In addition to recognizing the New York Section’s 15 new fellows, tribute was given to our 15-year and 25-year fellows. I was honored to address the fellows and guests, sharing my vision for expanding on the work of my predecessors as well as my personal journey of dentistry and ethics.

One of the highlights of the evening were the awards for “Outstanding Student Leadership” given to a single student from each of the four dental schools in our section. I never fail to be impressed by the accomplishments and goals of these amazing students. I hope that we were applauding future ACD leaders that night.
Also in February, Dr. Julie Connolly and I participated in an “Online SPEA Ethics and Eat Event” hosted jointly by the New York University College of Dentistry and Columbia University College of Dental Medicine SPEA Chapters. The purpose of the event was two-fold:
• Discuss ethical and professional challenges in general dentistry and periodontics.
• Discuss collaborations between general dentistry and periodontics.
This event received positive feedback and reinforced the concept that engaging students in these types of low-pressure forums increases the opportunity for critical connections to SPEA chapters in our section.

Our section’s reorganization meeting was held in March. This crucial meeting of the board and past chairs allowed us to review and refine our section’s strategic plan for this year. Our board is a cohesive group of leaders with a wealth of information and ideas geared toward enhancing the experience of our fellows, increasing our presence with SPEA chapters, and encouraging nominations of peers who have made exceptional contributions to the profession.
Our Spring Meeting was held in April, and the evening was filled with great conversations, highlighted by the storytelling skills of our speaker, Laurie Gwen Shapiro. Laurie is an award-winning journalist and bestselling author who finds her stories by “walking, listening, and following her instincts”. She has an amazing ability to get people to share meaningful events in their lives and has built a career by chasing the unexpected. Laurie, in her true native New Yorker style, regaled us with a presentation on how she uncovered four unforgettable stories - the “story behind the stories”. A good time was had by all!
The Columbia SPEA Chapter held its annual SPEA-ACD NY Section Ethics Panel in May. This in-person event was held at the dental school and included three section board members – me, and Drs. Gabriela Lee and Evan Schwarz. Dr. Julie Connolly, who serves as the group’s faculty advisor in addition to her role as Regent, was
also present. Ethical dilemmas were presented and our panel weighed in on each one. The students, who were at different stages in their dental school journey, were able to relate their pre-clinical and clinical experiences to the questions and topics of the evening.

Our recent Summer Social event was a great opportunity for fellowship and fun. The main event was a highlights tour of The Met Cloisters gardens and architecture. Located in Fort Tryon Park, the unique architecture and immersive atmosphere there was a lovely departure from the bustle of the heart of the city a few miles away. Our group was able to view the famous Unicorn Tapestries and many other examples of amazing medieval art. The tour was followed by an outdoor lunch at a local restaurant located in the park. The lively camaraderie of the day continued throughout the luncheon, offering more ways to deepen the connections between all who attended, fellows and family alike.

Western New York Section Report
Chair: Dr. William R. Calnon

The Western New York Section has had a very busy 2025 thus far. Allow me to list of few of the highlights:
1) The Regency 1 meeting at Yankee Dental Meeting proved to very beneficial as always. A chance to meet and compare notes with leaders from various Sections. I always walk away with fresh ideas. The combined ACD/ ICD luncheon and awards ceremony was extremely well attended.
2) One of my goals this past year has been to increase nominations from our Section. Historically the WNY Section would submit 5-7 nominations. In 2025, we have 18 nominees approved for Fellowship! That has reaf-

firmed the vast talent we have in our Section. Whereas the process was improved this year, a recurring comment disturbed me. When asked why many of our nominees were not already Fellows in the College, many responded “nobody ever asked me.” I fear that is the situation far beyond the boundaries of WNY.
3) The Leadership Meeting in San Antonio in May was exceptional. It was planned so well and offered Sections a chance to learn, interact and share ideas. We were divided into three groups and over the course of two days rotated through mini-sessions run by various Board members. Our own Regent, Julie, did a marvelous job in her presentation.

WNY Sagan Planet Walk
Executive Director Session with WNY Fellows

The Western New York Section was noted for its accomplishments, especially its active participation in the end-of-the-year giving campaign for the ACD Foundation.
4) The Section remains supportive of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine’s SPEA chapter. Dr. Charlie Travaglioto presented to the group in May.
5) Fellows in our section remain very involved in Dental Association leadership roles. Joe Rumfola is the current Eighth District President, Brendan Dowd is ADA District 2 (NYS) Trustee on the ADA Board, Sean McLaren is a member of the ADA’s Council on Advocacy for Access and Prevention, Jin Xiao is a member of the Council on Scientific Affairs, Chris Calnon is the Chair of the NYSDA Council on Membership, Mario Sylvestri is the Chair of the NYSDA Council on Dental Practice, Lynn Stacey is the Vice-President of NYSDA, and Dave Ramjattansingh is the new Seventh District Trustee on the NYSDA Board. These individuals are just a few examples of our Fellow leaders.
6) The Western New York Section held its Annual Business Meeting and social gathering in Ithaca July 18-20. We consider this our “Annual Family Reunion”! Our turnout was very good and we were joined by Julie Connolly as well as Mike Graham as special guests. We gathered Friday evening at the Tavern on the Commons, heard a very detailed presentation by Mike Graham on Saturday morning followed by a stroll on the Sagan Planet Walk. Lunch at Red’s Place was a prelude to a visit to nearby Taughannock Falls.

Western New York Section Report (continued)

Upon return to our hotel, we had our Annual Business meeting and received several reports including our Regency 1 update from Julie Connolly. Five individuals who will receive Fellowship in Washington were our guests for the weekend. The remainder of the evening consisted of hors D’oeuvres and libations in our hospitality suite, a delicious dinner at Simeon’s on the Commons and ended with desserts and cordials in our suite. The camaraderie was excellent, the discussions were friendly and informative, old friends caught up and new friends were made. The last Fellows departed at 2:30 AM!
My term as Section Chair ended at the end of our Annual Meeting. It has been an honor to serve my area and its Fellows. I have accepted the position of Regent-at-large on the ACD Board to fulfill an unexpired term of service. That will provide me with an opportunity to remain involved and continue to cross paths with many of you.
All my very best,
Bill

New England Section Report
Chair: Dr. Janis Moriarty

Greetings from New England!
Much has been happening in our section, as our leaders work both internally on our organizational structure and mission, and externally on programming and recruitment.
In mid- January we hosted our annual meeting, which is now held on Zoom since we combined our annual Awards Luncheon with ICD. We have found this format has increased our attendance to Fellows who may not have otherwise been able to attend our meeting in Boston. Dr. Max Perlitsch and Dr. Robert Wilson, celebrating 50 years as ACD Fellows, were in attendance and offered remarks. We were thrilled to have them stay for and participate in our meeting!
Our signature Awards and Recognition Luncheon was held as part of Yankee Dental Congress, in partnership with ICD District 1 for the second year. Students from the five schools in our section were presented with Senior Leadership Awards by their Deans (or designees) in front of almost 150 attendees.
Our highest honor, the Thomas F. Winkler III Leadership Award was presented to Dr. William MacDonnell, a pioneer and champion for dental anesthesia who has enjoyed a long career as a clinician, educator, advocate and mentor to many.
We were also pleased to sponsor a course at Yankee presented by ACD National President Bob Faiella and Dr. Meredith Bailey titled “Navigating the Ethical Landscape of AI in Dentistry”.
New Fellow Dr. Adam Saltz presented an outstanding spring lecture in March titled “From Setback to Success: the Transformative Rold of Digital Implant Workflows”, which emphasized the ethical guidelines that prioritize informed consent and the preservation of natural

Fellows of the New England Section at the San Antonio Leadership Conference. Meeting at Straumann New England, at their headquarters in Andover, MA.

teeth when possible, and the ethical training to equip educators and clinicians with tools to prioritize patient-centered care and make thoughtful, individualized decisions. This course was presented with the support of Straumann New England, at their headquarters in Andover, MA, and was offered to Fellows and non-Fellows, providing a chance to highlight ACDNE to a large audience.
In April we hosted “The Truth About Veracity” on Zoom, presented by Ms. Catherine Sarkis, J.D. and Dr. Kathryn Ragalis As a section with six states and a large geographic area, Zoom provides a great opportunity for our section to attend meetings and courses.
We were represented by our Chair, Secretary Dr. Marian Royer and Immediate Past Chair Dr. Maria Smith at the Section Leadership Conference in San Antonio and found it extremely useful! We enjoyed meeting many passionate colleagues in section and national leadership and brought home many ideas for the future! We express our thanks to the ACD Board for inviting section leaders for this inaugural program and we hope it continues!
Editor Dr. Kadambari Rawal published her first newsletter since becoming Editor and it was well worth the wait! Now online only, we have received many positive comments on the new format, and have aspirations to publish two issues per year to increase our visibility throughout the Section.
Our social media channels continue to grow and provide excellent opportunities for promoting our section and our members. Not limited to just our section or fellows, we hope to enhance awareness of ACD and cultivate future nominees!
We are excited to join many of you in Washington, DC as we welcome our 26 new Fellows, and celebrate many successes!
Cordially,

SPEA Update

COLUMBIA
This year, the Columbia University Chapter of the Student Professionalism & Ethics Association (SPEA) hosted a series of events aimed at fostering thoughtful discussions on ethical dilemmas in dentistry and providing students with opportunities to engage in conversations on professionalism and ethical decision-making.
We continued our traditional Ethics & Eats series, where students explored real-world ethical challenges from various specialty fields. In October, we partnered with the Columbia Pediatrics Club to host the Pediatrics Ethics & Eats event, featuring Dr. Caryn Siegel, who shared her insights and experiences as a leader in pediatric dentistry. In the spring, we hosted the Orthodontics Ethics & Eats, where Dr. Gail Schupak, an ACD member and

respected orthodontist, provided her perspectives on the ethical and professional issues that can arise in orthodontic practice.
In addition to these events, we collaborated with the NYU SPEA Chapter to host our first-ever multi-chapter online event, featuring Dr. Lorna Flamer-Caldera and Dr. Julie Connolly. This event provided students with the unique opportunity to hear from experts in general dentistry and periodontics about the ethical dilemmas they have encountered in their careers.
In April, we organized our annual Safe Zone event, which created a welcoming space for students to openly share their thoughts, questions, and concerns related to ethics and professionalism within the dental school community.
Finally, our academic year concluded with the Mock Case Review, where Dr. Lorna Flamer-Caldera, Dr. Gabriela Lee, Dr. Evan Schwarz, and Dr. Julie Connolly led discussions on complex ethical dilemmas and real-world cases encountered in dental practice. This interactive event allowed students to analyze challenging scenarios and gain valuable perspectives on navigating ethical issues in patient care.
Through these initiatives, Columbia SPEA remains committed to promoting ethical awareness, fostering professionalism, and building a supportive community where students can engage in meaningful dialogue about the challenges they may face as future dental professionals.
In particular, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the ACD New York Section on behalf of the Columbia SPEA Chapter. We truly appreciate the mentorship and guidance provided by ACD members throughout the year. The opportunities for dialogue and connection with ACD members have not only engaged students interested in various specialties but have also helped raise awareness of the real-world ethical challenges they will encounter in their future careers. Our strong collaboration with ACD has greatly enriched SPEA events, allowing us to address not only clinical and ethical concerns but also provide students with invaluable professional and career insights.

Currently, our chapter has just transitioned to two new leaders, me and Marcus Costa. Unfortunately, the Chapter had an event planned but it got canceled due to the speaker having a conflict. Together we are starting to plan events for the fall and spring of this upcoming academic year!
