For those of us who have never been exposed into the world of home schooling, it carries a certain mystique. We might envision a family alternating between algebra and Bible study, keeping a safe distance from the rampant worldliness in schools. Or perhaps we see children sitting around the kitchen table practicing spelling while mother supervises. Despite these traditional images, home schooling is growing and gaining respect. This is due in part to high profile success stories like home schoolers finishing first, second and third in the 2000 Scripps – Howard National Spelling Bee or the Colfax family in California who sent three sons to Harvard. Both the left and right wings of home schooling are active today with an estimated 1.5 million home–schooled children, as many families have both philosophical and religious for their choice (Kantrowitz & Wingert 1). Joining them are many home schoolers who simply seek the highest quality education for their child, which they believe public and even private schools can no longer provide.

Forty years ago home schooling did not satisfy compulsory education requirements in most states. Due to a gradual change in legislature, all states accept home schooling as a valid alternative but regulations vary by state. Lines asserts that at a minimum, families must file basic information with either the state or local education agency (3/8).

One of the most important criteria to consider when looking at home schooling is academics. In an era when the focus on accountability has become magnified, achievement of scholars is key to evaluating education. One of the first things to consider when looking at the academic quality of education is the ability of the teacher. Jennie and Donald Rakestraw, both professors at Georgia Southern College, argue that some parents do not have the ability or the patience to teach their children well (277). A home–schooled child suffers the chance of an uneven education due to the imbalanced preparation of the parent.

Home–schooling allows for more individual and/or personalized attention for the students. It allows them to make and maintain focus on the work presented by the parent. The parents who decide to home–school find that it is easier to help their child with weaknesses in subject matter and watch their progression in understanding difficult concepts. There are many web sites designated for parents with intentions to home–school. They provide daily information and lessons that are designed to help children with their studies. Obtaining materials is also fairly simple, and schools are more than willing to provide parents with used books and sample materials that are used in the classrooms. With such advantages why would parents not choose to home–school their children?

One of the major aspects of public education is that is it paid for out of one's taxes. Whether or not children choose to attend public school, parents are still paying for it in their taxes. It is estimated that to home school a child costs about $250 a year (Minority Home–schoolers of Texas, 2001). This can get quite costly depending on the amount of children one has. The reality is that each state has control over its school system. Therefore, each individual state makes their own laws except that all 50 states have compulsory attendance laws. Students that attend home school are less likely to be stressed out because of school work, and less likely to be a victim of peer pressure. Though there are a lot of benefits and advantages to being home schooled, there are also many disadvantages. Home schooling takes a lot of time to plan, and it can be hard on the parents to balance schooling with other home duties. Though home schooling allows parents to pick the time that the schooling will take place, it is a full–time job for one parent. One major disadvantage of home schooling is that it requires the parents to pay for everything with their own finances, this can cause financial pressure on the family. There is no need to finish a certain amount of work per day or to cram a bunch of meaningless facts in the night before an exam. I do not receive grades in any of the subjects I study at home, because I do not move on until I thoroughly understand the material. There is time to learn, time to make mistakes and to fix them, to figure out why and how something works.

There is nothing I love so much as a good experiment in the basement. My dad and I have built crystal radios and kites and circuits, all of which later helped me in college physics. I worked out of chemistry kits, testing our home for radon and building solar powered boats. Lab techniques evolved into detailed studies on our front lawn with different soils, water levels, and seeds, trying to figure out just why we could never get grass to grow. It's important to realize that my parents didn't teach me all of this; they provided me with grass seed and books and duct tape.

Perhaps the most traditional studying I've done at home was out of Saxon math texts. I've taught myself from Algebra 1/2 through to Calculus, and when I was younger I'd go to my dad for help. Often he would just ask me to explain the problem to him, and as I was explaining it I'd suddenly realize my trouble and thank him and go off to work some more. Sometimes he'd help me with a concept or two, or catch a simple arithmetic error I had overlooked.

As aspiring teachers we have come to see the professional training that is required for certified teachers. Parents who homeschool are not necessarily certified and lack the teaching experience for which classroom teachers are trained. There is also a criticism with the idea of homeschooling as becoming another commercial industry. Rob Reich, a noted professor at Stanford, sees homeschooling as another part of an ever growing commercial society (Reich, 2002, p. 58) In homeschooling it is possible to create a specialized curriculum by choosing subject material specific to a child's strengths. This allows for education to become more of a business than a growing process to build up a child's weaknesses as well as his or her strengths. When kids reach the age where learning begins parents now and days have a concern of whether to home school their kids or send them to a public school. Both are good methods in developing a good education for a child. But also have differences in techniques of teaching and environmental differences.
