I Am A Traditional Law School Applicant

I am not a traditional law school applicant. I am a 33 year–old Hispanic mother of three boys, aged fourteen, eleven, and ten. I am a first generation born U.S. citizen as my mother immigrated to the United States from a war–torn El Salvador in 1979 when a family friend smuggled her out of the country. They fled from atrocities committed by the Salvadorian military–led government. My father emigrated from Argentina in the 1960's evading social and political unrest and in search of a better economic future. My parents divorced in 1984, leaving my then four–year old brother and my two–year old self to be raised in a single parent–home spearheaded by my mother. I have never met a stronger or more hardworking woman. Having only completed the eight–grade and not speaking any English my mother cleaned houses and would babysit for a living. Work was a part of our lives. Most of my childhood memories are centered on accompanying my mother to work. By the age of nine, I could comfortably translate for my mother as I could clean a house and help care for a child. At the age of fourteen I as working as a weekend babysitter myself. As a child witnessing my mother's struggle, it engrained within me a deep sense of responsibility and a yearning to help. When young, the best way I could help was by means of my brother. I have worked for toys for tots for the past 3 years. In my early years, I have been a hard worker that gives my all and more, my business that is rapidly growing throughout the years have been a hard–working career that has given me many of chances to explore the working life. Thought school I have always been interested in learning about my Amendments, The Constitution and my rights as an American citizen. Thought school I would stay after so I could get more practice in for the laws when I get older. Throughout school social studies was always my favorite study lessons. I would get tested on laws and Amendments and pass them without a problem.in my future, I have always wanted to work for the service even if that had meant being a police officer or a firefighter or even in the military. In school, I would help the teachers by staying after school and help tutor the kids by giving them lessons on ASL or social studies because that was what I was good at. Sometimes I would stay after and help the teachers by giving them lessons plans for the next couple of days or I would help them teach the lesson. This applies not only to an individual client, but it can be carried forth to help the masses. Law truly is a vast landscape to be explored and used, not only to benefit just one person, but society itself. As former United States Attorney General Edward Levi once said, "Law builds upon and, I should like to claim, is one of the liberal arts. It uses words of persuasion and changing definitions for practical ends." In addition to my passion for learning law, I am also a naturally good and formidable debater. I love to argue my case, and when I succeed in the exchange, especially when the other person's opinion is transformed, I quietly relish the victory. There is no bigger thrill for me. Although I am an average scorer at best regarding standardized tests, to see me shine is to see me in a real–world situation where brains, data, and strategic application of that knowledge are paramount for triumph. I was born and raised in China, and I moved to New York when I was 17 years old. The experience of living in two totally different countries had always got me thinking, why is the United States so unique, and why are so many people willing to leave their home to start a new life here. Ever since I was a child the idea of sitting in a courtroom, viewing two individuals going at each other trying to prove their points have always appealed to me. Honestly, the thing that caught my attention the most were T.V. shows like Law and Order and The Practice. When I began college, I had no intention of applying to law school. In fact, I wanted to be a doctor since I was five. It shouldn't come as a surprise, however, that our understanding of things as five–year–olds is not always reflective of reality. In 2010, I spoke with a childhood mentor who is employed as a dentist. She encouraged me to look into the medical field because it was a guaranteed profession that would allow me to help those in need. Following this conversation, I was tormented with a kidney infection and ovarian cysts, but at the time, no doctor was able to give me a diagnosis. I was forced to go from doctor to doctor and pay out–of–pocket expenses for visits, lab work, and ineffective medicine. Finally, the last physician I visited extended a helping hand. Realizing that I was acollege student with no insurance and that my family income at the time was minimal, this physician decided to reduce the costs of my visits and find a way to alleviate the cost of my prescriptions. That single act of kindness solidified what my mentor said a few weeks prior. It helped me realized that I could change lives by becoming a doctor and fulfill my dream of being the reason someone smiles. Courtrooms and lawyers played a significant and meaningful part of my life. I come from a family in which many have encountered the criminal justice system. It is one of the many reasons why I have a desire to attend law school and become a defense attorney. I began my law career in a well–known personal injury firm. I worked as a Paralegal, in which I gained knowledge, skills, and experiences from the environment in which I was working. From this experience, I realized my passion to help people. I saw my strengths in the way that I cared and talked to the clients, which set me a part from others in the firm. I knew I was destined to continue to follow my dream of becoming a lawyer when I spoke with a client, who I gained a relationship with, said "why are you not in law school yet? You have a gift for this. This is what God has called you to be." I knew then that I was on the right path. I knew I was destined to be great but to know others saw it as well motivated me. The clarification from not only the clients but the high profiled attorney who I worked for encouraged me even more.
