DID YOU KNOW... With agriculture in full swing throughout most of the Danish era, St. Croix flourished, and the Crown made Christiansted the capital of its Danish West Indies. (The capital returned to Charlotte Amalie in 1871). Sugar was king, but St. Croix also exported rum, cotton, molasses and hardwoods. When slave Moses Gottleib (Buddhoe) led a non-violent revolt in Frederiksted and delivered an ultimatum on July 3, 1848, Danish Governor General Peter Von Scholten freed all slaves. The USVI celebrates Emancipation Day each year; 2019 marks 102 years for which the government formed a Centennial Commission to orchestrate elaborate festivities.
