Chops 6
I’m just NOT feeling it this month!!! I do not want or care to wade through 100’s of pics from ALL the Bike, Chopper & Antique shows that took place here during Bike Week, besides you have all the best pics in Thunder Roads Magazine, so bear with me, as I do my thing of trying to entertain you the best way I know how, talking about and posting stuff from the 70’s!
I made it out to Tropical Tattoo’s Chopper Time which was (in my opinion) the 2nd largest one I’ve been involved with, and I’ve been helping since 2005. It was KRAZY Good!!! I also went down to JoJo’s show at Guiseepe’s Pizza & to the Last Resort, then up to Hog Ridin’s party & that was it. Do I feel bad for not making it to all the big bars’s shows upon Hwy 1, absolutely NOT. If you can’t support me, I’m NOT going to support you and besides that, “this Chopper/ Antique chit has gotten totally out of control”!!!
Also, if you’re paying people from outside our area to come in to draw a crowd, you’re funny. You may not know this but people do not come to Bike Week to meet celebrities, they come to see the locals and their friends who build bikes of like mindedness. To them it’s 1 or 2 times a year to come see what’s real. People are over all these Big Star things, even the musical acts. Ask Steven Tyler how long his biker stardom lasted. People are not dumb!
I & 85% of us that live here don’t care about bikes that never get rode, maybe sold, but not rode. If Tuttle Sr, would ride a real old school chopper here & not trailer it, he could get in a show, (maybe), but NO TRAILER QUEENS!!! Yet some others would fall all over him, they just see $$$!!!
This is going to rub the fur on the cat the wrong way for some, to that I say, “Turn the cat around”! I’m talking about some people

God’s Corner Acts 26
16 Who are You, Lord?’ I asked.
‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. 16‘But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen from Me and what I will show you. 17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those sanctified by faith in Me.’ 19 So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. 20 First to those in Damascus and Jerusalem, then to everyone in the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I declared that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds worthy of their repentance. 21 For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me.
22 But I have had God’s help to this day, and I stand here to testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen: 23 that the Christ would suffer, and as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”
24 At this stage of Paul’s defense, Festus exclaimed in a loud voice, “You are insane, Paul! Your great learning is driving you to madness!”
25 But Paul answered, “I am not insane, most excellent Festus; I am speaking words of truth and sobriety. 26 For the king knows about these matters, and I can speak freely to him. I am confident that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do.”
28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Can you persuade me in such a short time to become a Christian?” 29 “Short time or long,” Paul replied, “I wish to God that not only you but all who hear me this day may become what I am, except for these chains.”
30 Then the king and the governor rose, along with Bernice and those seated with them. 31 On their way out, they said to one another, “This man has done nothing worthy of death or imprisonment.”

TURN AROUND YOU COWARD!!!
Remember the old cowboy shows, where if someone called you out, you had to face them in a gunfight, even if you didn’t want to fight, or be called a coward. Even your woman would leave you over it!!!
Here is an example; say a man doesn’t carry a gun, but someone bullies him or does anything they can to get under his skin, so that the bully gun fighter can gun him down. A gunfighter against a peaceful man with no gun slinging experience at all. A man who just wants to be left alone, so the “coward” turns from the professional and walks away, only to be shot in the back, and killed. The coward is killed!
But in reality who was the coward? In some shows they say whoever shoots a man in the back is a coward. What do you say? Who is the real coward, the peace maker or the trouble maker?
Is it any different today? Can a man be passive and walk away from a fight without being called sissy or a coward? Can a person live in peace & want to be left alone or does that same male HAVE to stand up to whomever is calling him out, just to save face, yet they still may get shot down anyway.
I’ve never been the one to walk away, until the last few years. I have no desire to fight, not even argue & yes if I can turn my back to get away from the aggressor, I’ll do it. Does it hurt my pride, my manhood, of course, but to me it’s just not worth it anymore, and because of that I’ve been shot in the back many times, over & over again.
So who is the real coward? Is it me? Or is it the person who keeps shooting me in the back as I try to walk away? I know the answer, but some will never agree, because they love bullying the passive! They can’t stop, but one day they will run into a gun slinger, one faster and better than them and get shot right in the heart!!!

Chops 11 We Lost Another Biker Icon! RIP Darin Bennett
Darn Mirror!
Wow! I’m not usually up this early on a Saturday! But, you can’t ride all day if you don’t start in the morning. Man, do I really look like this in the morning? Darn Mirror! Wait...rinse and spit. Sorry. Drug a comb across my head, done! Didn’t think it was going to be this chilly until I opened the garage door. Darn Garage Door! Even looking through the fog of my own breath, I’m still a bit eager to meet some folks for a little group ride. Not sure how many will show up with the thermometer leaning a tic left of forty degrees. By any measure, that’s cold! Especially by Florida standards!
We have some time to kill so let’s take a longer way. Old Mission Road north to Highway Forty Four. Highway Forty Four west to Glencoe Road. Glencoe Road north to Pioneer. Pioneer west to our rendezvous. Right where Pioneer collides with Tomoka Road, aka Four Fifteen. The Cabbage Patch. Oh, Great, only one bike. I guess that answers my question of how many will show up. Ok, well it’s us plus one. We’re still a bit early so we’ll just hang out and wait for any Johnny come latelys. I hear another one rumbling in! Ok, it’s us plus two.
And, off we go. Destination, The Pirate’s Pub. South on Tomaka Road back towards Highway Forty Four. Right onto Highway Forty Four, and away we go! The run on Forty Four isn’t bad. Slim traffic, no congestion to speak of, until we get closer to Deland. Still not too bad for a busy, scenic, and popular town. Through Deland and turning the speedometers clockwise up to fifty five. Nice! We rolled up onto, and through a roundabout. (Not sure why these things are popping up seemingly everywhere). I know they slow the traffic down, but they seem confusing and dangerous to me. (Especially on two wheels). Looks like most people don’t really know what to do or where to go. Like I said, confusing and dangerous.
After we leave the clatter of the drawbridge that leaps across the Saint John’s River behind us, the next traffic light in sight will guide us north onto Highway Forty Two towards the booming metropolis of Paisley. Highway Forty Two splits right through a very rural and underdeveloped area in Putnam County that makes for a real nice ride, or drive, through seemingly endless curves and trees. Almost forgot how cold it is. Past the firehouse on the left, a brief jont further towards a church, same side, turn right then a quick left. Are we there yet?! Yup! And all have arrived safely, which is Always the goal! Quite a crowd for as chilly as it is. Live music, good food, and cold drinks. There’s an abundance of dead cowhide
Chops 12
walking around, too. Almost everyone is wearing at least something made of leather. If it’s cold enough for US to be in leather, it’s cold! Just a handful of years ago we would have ridden almost anywhere in almost any weather. But, as we’ve gotten older we’ve become more selective about riding in uncomfortable weather. Thank Goodness the allure of a group ride got the best of us! So, here we are. After a couple of hours of mingling, the inevitable is upon us. The ride home. And as luck would have it, it’s now raining. Not raining, raining, just sprinkling. Now it’s cold And raining. Lovely!! Made a brief stop at a friend of a friend’s house is Deland just long enough to warm up a bit and sink a drink. Some idle chitchat while we wait to see what Mother Nature has in store for the next leg of our ride. After a while her message was clear. RAIN!
So we said our good byes and it’s up, up and away. Made another short stop at O.B.’s in Deland to layer up some more for the last leg of the journey. We meandered our way south back onto Highway Forty Four and aimed the bike east. But ‘Ol Mother Nature had one more trick up her sleeve. She’s lowering the sun behind us. Now it’s going to be cold, wet, and dark. Splendid! Even with the questionable riding conditions, it was a Great day! Saw some old friends,(not that the friends are old, just the friendships). Met a handful of new acquaintances as well. It really was a Great Day!
Wow! I’m not usually up this late on a Friday morning! Man that alarm clock is loud! Look at the time! I have to get to work. Well, at least it’s Friday. One day away from dragging one of the bikes out. Hmm, Electra Glide or the Springer? I really love that Springer. Had the craziest dream, or nightmare about a cold, wet, and dark ride? Saw some old friends, (not that the friends are old, just the friendships). Had a Great ride! Shared some chit-chat over live music, good food, and cold drinks. Huh, just goes to show you that even an apparently bad weather ride, or a fictitious ride, can make for some really great memories, and even better stories! Man, do I really look like this in the morning? Darn Mirror! *********
Woo Hoo! It’s only eleven o’clock on a Friday morning and I’m off work early! What to do? What to do? I got it! As soon as “The Boss” gets home from work, which should be around two thirty-ish or so, we’ll hop on “The Bar Bike” and take a little ride. Love mounting “The Bar Bike”!! Where to go? Where to go? Ok, north on US Highway One towards New Smyrna, right onto Canal Street, east on Canal Street until it bumps into Riverside Drive. Left onto Riverside then a quick right into an ally way
Chops 13
looking street until it pours us into a parking that it shares with The River Deck Restaurant right on the river. Good Call! A couple of drafts for me, a couple of margaritas for “The Boss”, then we reverse coarse. But, instead of a left onto Riverside back towards Canal, we right blinkered it towards the North Causeway. Right at the light where Riverside meets Washington, (Flagler Ave.), until we get to the park/boat ramp on the right side, west side of the river. We planted ourselves at a vacant picnic table right near the water and right near the boat ramp. Not so coincidently, out of one of the saddle bags pops a Subway treat. Turkey sub with all the fixins’. One of our favorites. What a Great way to end the workweek! Early picnic style supper on the water with “The Boss”, a couple of cold ones out of the cooler, and live entertainment. (If you’ve never just sat and watched the boat ramp dance and shenanigans, you’re missing some quality entertainment)! Finished the sub, then a bit of a detour. East on the causeway over the river towards the beach. Love the sights and the aroma of the sea. Hit a light on Flagler, right to Forty Four. Made a quick stop for one last livation at The Beachside Tavern. Forty Four west to US One, left towards home. Sometimes all we need is a little “US” time to help scrape some of the workweek and some of life’s challenges off so we can better appreciate the Blessings we’ve received. And sometimes you just have to keep it......Short and Sweet Gregg Riggle

Women’s roles in the Wild West were often constrained, reliant on male family members for financial support as they settled in new territories. However, those who chose to become saloon girls found a degree of independence not afforded to many. Contrary to modern misconceptions, the life of a saloon girl was not always as glamorous as portrayed, yet it offered unique freedoms.
Saloon girls served as #servers or #dancers, earning their income primarily through drink sales rather than sex work. They received a percentage of profits from each beverage sold, allowing them to earn around $10 per week, a considerable sum for the time. Despite the potential financial stability, dangers lurked; violent encounters and possessive patrons were not uncommon hazards. As they aged, saloon girls often faced uncertainty and hardship, with few avenues for support. Many were relegated to euphemistically termed roles or found themselves without options, succumbing to tragic fates.
The attire of saloon girls reflected their role as entertainers, characterized by flashy, eye-catching outfits with shorter hemlines and colorful petticoats. While these garments may have defied #Victorian norms, they were emblematic of the flamboyant atmosphere of the saloon.
Sex work was indeed a recognized source of income in the Old West, particularly in unregulated territories where brothels and parlor houses operated with relative impunity. These establishments, marked by red lanterns and offering various forms of entertainment, provided some degree of protection for the women who worked within.
The demographics of the West during the Gold Rush era were heavily skewed towards men, with women often finding opportunities in saloons to earn a living amidst the predominantly male population. Despite the challenges and risks they faced, saloon girls played a significant yet often overlooked role in shaping the culture and economy of the Wild West.

PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS released the single KICKS (Feb 28, 1966)
KICKS is still the coolest song and might be the first anti-drug rock song. It finds lead singer Mark Lindsay telling a girl that drugs won’t fill the emptiness inside her, and she needs to get straight before it’s too late.
The last thing most teenagers wanted to hear was another warning about the dangers of drugs, but this song didn’t come off preachy - it sounded more like a honest concern from a friend than the finger wagging of an authority figure.
This was written by the husband-and-wife team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, who were in their mid-20s at the time but already established songwriters, with “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” and “Blame It On The Bossa Nova” among their credits. They also wrote the Animals hit “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place”; when producer Terry Melcher went to work on the Paul Revere & the Raiders album Midnight Ride, he asked Mann and Weil for a similar song. They sent him “Kicks,” which they had originally written hoping it would help get a friend off drugs.
Many kids played this in their garage bands, often unaware that it was an anti-drug song. Ace Frehley of Kiss, who covered it on his 2020 album Origins Vol. 2, said: “When I was a kid, I used to come home from school and they’d be on TV. I was exposed to their music, and I always liked the song ‘Kicks’ because it had a great riff. Now that I listen to the lyrics, I realize that it’s a really good anti-drug song, and it’s a good message for the youth of today.”

Who Was/Is Vince Gill?
Vincent Grant Gill (born April 12, 1957) is an American country music singer, songwriter and musician. He has achieved commercial success and fame both as frontman of the country rock band Pure Prairie League in the 1970s and as a solo artist beginning in 1983, where his talents as a vocalist and musician have placed him in high demand as a guest vocalist and a duet partner.
He has recorded more than 20 studio albums, charted over 40 singles on the U.S. Billboard charts as Hot Country Songs, and has sold more than 26 million albums. He has been honored by the Country Music Association with 18 CMA Awards, including two Entertainer of the Year awards and five Male Vocalist Awards. As of 2022, Gill has also earned 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other male country music artist. In 2007 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2016, Gill was inducted into the Guitar Center Rock Walk by Joe Walsh of the Eagles. In 2017, he and Deacon Frey were hired by the Eagles in place of the late Glenn Frey.
I DIDN’T LIKE HIM AT 1ST AS HE LEFT HIS FIRST WIFE FOR ANOTHER, THEN I DID THE SAME!!!
In 1968, Gill’s older half-brother, Bob Coen, was involved in a severe car crash. Bob was 22 years old at the time, while Gill was 11. The accident left Bob in a coma for three months with irreversible brain damage. He subsequently struggled in life and would lose contact with his family and friends. He died in 1993. Gill wrote the song “It Won’t Be the Same This Year” for his brother. He dedicated his 1993 Christmas album Let There Be Peace on Earth and his first televised Christmas special that year to Bob.
Gill met country music singer Janis Oliver of Sweethearts of the Rodeo in Los Angeles when they were both starting out in music. The two married in 1980. Their daughter Jennifer was born in 1982. In 1983, the couple moved to Nashville. Gill worked as a session guitarist, sang back-up, and continued to write songs while his wife’s career took off. Occasionally Gill would mix sound for his wife’s band. The

two divorced in 1997. Amy Grant and Gill at a 2004 concert to show support for U.S. military men and women
Gill met Christian music artist Amy Grant in 1993 when he asked her to perform in his first televised Christmas special. Grant and thenhusband Gary Chapman began divorce mediation in 1998, with Grant moving out of the home and filing for divorce in early 1999. The divorce was finalized in June 1999. Gill and Grant began to see each other publicly a few months later. In March 2000 they were married. Together they have one daughter, Corrina.
Gill has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since August 10, 1991 He celebrated his 25th Opry anniversary with a tribute show on August 13, 2016.[8]
In 1997, he received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement.
In 2010, Gill officially joined the country swing group The Time Jumpers.
In July 2011, Gill appeared as a guest on NPR’s news quiz show Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me.[13] Also in 2011, he appeared on the second of two bluegrass tribute albums for the British rock band the Moody Blues: Moody Bluegrass TWO... Much Love (2011).[14] In May 2011, Carrie Underwood was one of the seven women to be honored by the Academy of Country Music at the Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country special. At the ceremony, Gill introduced Underwood and presented her with the special award. He sang one of her hits, “Jesus, Take The Wheel”, and joined Underwood on a rendition performance of “How Great Thou Art”. The video of the performance went viral within two days.
In February 2012, Gill announced, “For the first time in 30 years, I don’t have a record deal. Don’t know that I want one.”
In March 2012, he performed at the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky, for its opening night. He was recruited for the show at the 11th hour when singer LeAnn Rimes
Chops 29
canceled the day before the opening. Gill drove up from Nashville that night with only his guitar and played to repeated standing ovations from a standing-room only house.
In April 2012, it was confirmed that Gill had been working with Bonnie Tyler on her upcoming album, performing a duet with her entitled “What You Need from Me”.
In June 2012, he was touring and performing only bluegrass songs.
Gill received the 2,478th star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame on September 6, 2012.
Gill was featured in a song by Kelly Clarkson titled “Don’t Rush”, which appears on Clarkson’s Greatest Hits – Chapter One.
In 2014, Gill received the Country Music Awards Irving Waugh Award of Excellence. Gill was only the sixth recipient since the inception of the award in 1983.
In 2016, Gill was selected as one of 30 artists to perform on Forever Country, which celebrates 50 years of the CMA Awards.
In his career Gill has sold more than 26 million albums and accumulated more than 50 Top 40 hits.
Gill joined the Eagles, alongside Deacon Frey, following the death of Glenn Frey. Gill serves as co-lead guitarist, in addition to providing rhythm guitars, singing background, and frequently handling lead vocals in place of Glenn Frey’s role. He initially started touring with the band in 2017, and continues to serve as a member of the band,

Speaking of Loyality!
One of the things I see here, often, is people who make a promise to stop by your business for whatever service you offer, because you are a good customer of theirs, to pay you back.
I know a couple of bar tenders who work at a place that we frequent often, Willie & myself, and each time Willie tips these folks a great sum, and each time they say, “I can’t wait to come by your shop and get my new tattoo!” Kool!!!
Then you go back in there a few weeks later and the same people wants to show us their new tattoo, that they got from another shop. That’s hard to swallow. Yet, Will still generously tips them.

I want to post this song that I wrote about 35 years ago. It’s something that some of the veterans struggle with the name of it is - “Prisoner of War “
Come in Alpha this is bravo I got two whiskeys and 3 kilos. Victor Charlie on my left and right this could be a long night tonight. am I dreaming, I don’t know. Reality just comes and goes.
Will I wake and be at home or will this nightmare just go on? Here I am with my wife in bed Vietnam running through my head. For me the war will never end I keep fighting it again, and again. For some the war is over, for some it goes on. Some act like they never went over some act like they never came home. Someone’s hit, someone cries, someone’s bleeding, and someone dies. The sound of the AKs are getting louder and the night air is filled with the smell of gunpowder.
I see my friends’ faces that gave their all when I read their name written on the wall. After 20 years I’m still keeping score and my mind has made me a prisoner of war. Written by Jerry Turner 1988.

When Louis Lindley Jr. dropped out of high school at 16 to join a rodeo, he called himself “Slim Pickens” so his father wouldn’t see his name on the entry lists.
A great actor, but more than that, a great man!!!

Born March 26th, 1919: A familiar face in so many iconic western classics, Strother Martin.
Born in Indiana, Strother was a champion swimmer and diver before moving to L.A. He served as a swimming instructor in the United States Navy during World War II, and it was as a swimming and diving coach that began his career in Hollywood – which quickly led to him being cast in smaller roles in television in the 1950s primarily in westerns series like HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL and THE TEXAN. He eventually made the transition to film, and the rest is history.
Making an inventory of Strother Martin’s many co-stars and the famous directors with whom he worked quickly becomes a study in the very best that the western genre had to offer. Frequently cast by John Ford (most notably in THE HORSE SOLDIERS and THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE) and co-starring half a dozen times with John Wayne, Strother became a staple of the genre and formed fast friendships with many actors cherished by fans of Hollywood’s Old West – including not only Wayne, but also Slim Pickens.
He played the prison captain in Stuart Rosenberg’s 1967 prison drama COOL HAND LUKE, in which he uttered the line, “What we have got here is failure to communicate.” The American Film Institute would go on to list this line as the 11th greatest of all time in their “100 Years...100 Movie Quotes” list. Strother died on August 1, 1980.
