This installation marked the completion of the Murphy Park Public Art Project, a COCA-coordinated, community engagement & creative place-making initiative in partnership with Urban Strategies. This work was designed by Bayoc in collaboration with a group of committed Carr Square residents.

Dear Friends 2018–2019 was a pivotal moment for COCA. It was a time of focused preparation as COCA's historic past reaches toward a bright future. With deep gratitude for all who supported the Create Our Future Campaign, significant progress was made on the brand new Ferring East Wing, including the state-of-the-art Berges Theatre. We're incredibly excited to unveil the new campus expansion in 2020. It’s a gift unlike any other to the St. Louis region, and we can’t wait for our creative community to unwrap it. While construction continued, our COCA Presents season, COCAbiz experiences, and COCAedu programming amplified our mission within the community, outside the walls of our building. Bringing inspiring opportunities directly to people and infusing creativity into everything from school curricula to business innovation supported our mission to further nurture partnerships and ensure art is accessible to everyone.

Artistic programs have continued to flourish, providing students, faculty, and our community with unparalleled experiences. World-renowned choreographers visited COCA for residencies and master classes throughout the year, faculty continued to receive the American Ballet Theatre teaching training, and we raised the bar with our expanded theatre offering. As we approach what is sure to be a momentous year ahead, we are thankful beyond measure for your support and participation. While COCA continues to grow as a cultural resource both in and outside the St. Louis region, I celebrate the fact that our expansion means inviting even more people into our family to explore, express, share, and learn. COCA is, and will always be, a house of the people—and you are welcome here.

Sincerely,

Pre-Professional Division COCA is committed to providing financial, academic, and career support for young artists to succeed in dance, theatre, and vocal performance.

COCA continued to provide support services to ensure access for all of our Pre-Professional students with support services, including ACT prep, dancewear, transportation, meal/ snack services, college guidance, and preparations for college auditions. Over the summer, students in the Pre-Professional Division traveled all across the United States to participate in the summer programs of prestigious institutions, including Juilliard, Nashville Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, Peridance Capezio Center, and Kansas City Ballet. A record number of Discovery Young Artist (DYA) students made the crossover from the DYA program to Student Companies. More than 50% of DYA students are in one or more of COCA’s Student Companies. The DYA program also continued its relationship with America Reads, a tutoring service through Washington University in St. Louis, and The Bailey Foundation.

Undergraduate and graduate students at Washington University in St. Louis partner with COCA as tutors in the Discover Young Artists’ Homeroom as a part of the America Reads program.

Classes & Camps

St. Louisans of all ages and skill levels discover their creative potential in COCA classes and camps. We emphasize the student-teacher relationship and use Studio Habits of Mind as our arts education framework. Our more than 200 highly qualified teaching artists bring professional experience in their art forms and exceptional teaching standards which result in student learning and growth.

Members of COCA’s ballet faculty all completed and passed the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum in Levels 4–5. This was a continuum of their previous training of Pre-Primary–Level 3. This training is crucial to the growth of COCA’s future in training heathy and well-rounded dancers in ballet.

Through meaningful, first-class arts experiences, COCA serves more than 50,000 people, from enthusiastic amateurs to emerging professionals. In 2018–2019, COCA’s classes & other education programs served people from 293 zip codes.

A highlight of the 2019 COCA Summer Arts Camps was the Youth Musical, Once on This Island JR. at The Edison Theatre at Washington University in St. Louis. The production was directed by Grace Austin with music direction by Tre'von Griffith and choreography by Christopher Page-Sanders

COCAedu

Since 1992, COCAedu has supported thousands of students & dedicated educators throughout the St. Louis region with arts programming. Professional Development

Arts Learning

COCA delivered 47 STEAM residencies in writing, inquiry, and design-thinking, as well as 66 arts integration residencies across Kindergarten through 12th grade levels. These arts integration programs could be seen in sixteen schools in three different St. Louis school districts and one Illinois school district.

COCAedu Professional Development provides teachers with the tools to develop and implement arts-based strategies in their classrooms. During the 2018–2019 school year, COCAedu staff facilitated “Defining Arts Integration” and “Studio Habits of Mind” workshops throughout the region, linking the work of the Summer Institute for Arts Integration to ongoing development during the school year.

COCAedu’s arts classes and residencies bring customized, multidisciplinary arts enrichment programs to schools. Many residencies include a field trip to an exhibition in the Millstone Gallery or a live performance. In 2018-2019, COCAedu and University City High School visual art students worked together to produce Figures & Grisaille in the Millstone Gallery. Local students and Boys and Girls Club members came together for an editorial cartoon workshop inspired by Scholastic's Art.Write.Now.Tour.

Theatre Communications Group Audience (R)evolution Grant

St. Louis Public Library Summer Camp Partnership

In collaboration with The Black Rep and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis, COCA was awarded a Theatre Communications Group (TCG) Audience Revolution Grant to support the launch of the St. Louis Technical Theatre Workforce Collaborative, a robust multi-year partnership designed to inspire interest in technical theatre careers. Building upon decades of experience in creating youth development programs of the highest quality, The Black Rep’s long-standing Teen Tech Program and COCA’s established multi-disciplinary approach to arts education, the collaborative joined forces with the Boys & Girls Clubs to increase the pipeline of opportunities to thrive in the creative industry.

In 2019, COCAedu kicked off a partnership with the St. Louis Public Library, providing free spring break camp at the Cabanne Branch and five summer camps at four branches: Cabanne, Carpenter, Carondelet, and Machacek. COCA camps, rooted in the camps offered on-site at COCA, were the first to fill to capacity when registration opened. This partnership was so well received that the St. Louis Public Library program staff requested sixteen camps for summer 2020.

Paraquad's Shine the Light Award COCA was presented with Paraquad's 2019 Shine the Light Award in recognition of our efforts to build a community that is accessible, and promotes opportunities for people with disabilities to increase their independence. The Shine the Light Awards recognizes the special contributions of businesses, organizations, and individuals that make our community a more welcoming, more accessible and more equitable place for people with disabilities. Award honorees were nominated by their peers for accomplishments in areas that included employment and hiring practices for people with disabilities, dedication to ensuring an accessible facility for all, disability-focused customer service training, support and advocacy for disability rights and services or similar contributions.

On May 16, FOCUS St. Louis awarded COCA with a 2019 What’s Right with the Region Award. COCA was honored in the category of “Fostering Creativity for Social Change” for harnessing the power of the arts and imagination to bring about change in the region. FOCUS St. Louis is the region's premier nonprofit leadership organization that prepares diverse leaders through its leadership training, civic education, and public engagement initiatives.

Create Our Future

The Create Our Future Campaign is the largest in the organization’s history with a goal of $45 million. COCA’s new east wing will include a state-of-the-art, 450-seat theater; new studios; a community commons area; and a safe and accessible location for families to drop-off and pick-up students. To be completed in Spring 2020, the new wing will be named in honor of Alison & John Ferring, who led the Create our Future Campaign with a substantial first gift. The Kuehner name will adorn the historic west wing in honor of Kim Kuehner's significant gift, and the new theatre will be named in honor of the Berges Family Foundation in recognition of

a generous challenge gift. The new central gathering space, Centene Commons, will be named in recognition of a sizable lead corporate gift from the Centene Charitable Foundation. The expansion will allow COCA to serve more students in multidisciplinary classrooms and studios and deliver innovative dance and theatre performances, while substantially growing the organization’s endowment, ensuring COCA will be able to serve the St. Louis community for years to come.

After completion, when visitors walk through the building, they will be able to simultaneously perceive the original building, the new renovation, the expansion, and the whole COCA community all at once. Being respectful of the iconic stature of COCA’s building (originally the B’nai Amoona Synagogue, designed by renowned German architect Eric Mendelsohn) has been fundamental to the design approach, and has developed the renovation and the expansion in ways that allow the original building to remain legible as new construction is designed to be sympathetic but clearly distinct from the original.

More than 300 members of COCA’s Richard Baron Leadership Circle and guests attended FLAME 2019. FLAME took a funny new twist—featuring comedy! Headlining the event was COCA alumna Jo Firestone who performs stand-up comedy across New York City and whose bio also includes comedy writing for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Another twist was Jo’s opening act—performed brilliantly by Alison Ferring—and Jo's “on-stage partner in crime” was her grandfather Billy Firestone. Bob & Colleen Millstone, third generation COCA supporters, accepted the Ferring Award for Philanthropy given to The Millstone Family Foundation in recognition of their years of support for the programming in the Millstone Gallery. The COCA Financial Task Force was honored with the Newell S. “Jim” Knight Volunteer Service Award, in recognition of their critical assistance in successfully navigating the financial structure—gaining crucial New Markets Tax Credits—for COCA’s $45 million Create Our Future Campaign. These talented individuals included David Desai-Ramirez, Ray Kalinowski, Meg Schniethorst, and Shannon Sock, who also served as COCA’s Board Treasurer for the past 5 years. The evenings' performance ended with a rousing vocal rendition of "No Bad News," by COCA student, Shaniya Perry, because all news at COCA is good news.

This list of COCA contributors includes gifts to COCA’s programs designated to our 2018–2019 Fiscal Year (September 1, 2018–August 31, 2019). We apologize for any errors in or omissions from this list.

Students from University City High School worked for several weeks with teaching artist Jen James and their art teacher, Marnie Claunch, to develop their works for the exhibition University City High School: Figures & Grisaille. The 2018–2019 school year marked the second time collaboration that is becoming an annual component of the Millstone Gallery's season. Students visited the Gallery for inspiration, and participated in a residency that culminated in a full-fledged gallery opening for students, families, and the entire COCA community. 27

Seedfolks: Sustainability Awareness through Arts Education In spring 2019, COCA received a St. Louis Green

Business Challenge Innovation Award for Seedfolks: Sustainability Awareness through Arts Education. Participating at the Champion Level, the award

recognizes work with an innovative sustainability project of their choosing.

COCA presented a play adaptation of Seedfolks,

a short children's novel that tells the story of how

a diverse cast of characters, each from a different

ethnic group, transforms an empty lot in the inner

city into a vibrant community garden. Performances were held at The Greencubator, an innovative

urban garden incubator in a former abandoned

warehouse in Downtown St. Louis. Over 300 people participated in the post-show activity.

“Seedfolks celebrated diverse children and adults working together to create a garden that transformed their urban neighborhood. Our community at COCA was transformed through the rich interactions producing this play with our great partners, for our family audiences.” —Shawna Flanigan, Director of Arts Education & New Program Development, COCA 28

Keeping COCA students and families safe as they crossed Washington Avenue from the parking garage is always important. But this summer, Camp Teaching Assistant Quinn Simmons (also a cast member of Into the Woods) kept campers in high spirits as he safely danced them across the street every day. One particular day of patrolling, performed to the tune of “I’m Gonna be (500 miles)” by The Proclaimers was captured and ended up being the most viral social media share of COCA’s year. 29
