Fire District extinguishes Concha Loma kitchen fire

The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District extinguished a kitchen fire at a Concha Loma Drive apartment complex at 2:30 p.m. on May 5. A person had called to report smelling smoke, but the initial investigation of the two-story apartment building at 990 Concha Loma Drive revealed no evidence of fire. Further investigation showed smoke coming from the apartment building eaves, and all residences were evacuated as a precaution. The smoke was traced to an upstairs unit, where firefighters entered and extinguished the fire within moments. Three engines, two battalion chiefs and one fire investigator responded. Montecito Fire Protection District, Ventura County Fire and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the fire. The cause is still under investigation.

Boys & Girls Club searches for new director

Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club is seeking a new director after the departure of Timothy Grigsby, who had served the club since August 2015. In the interim, former Director Jamie Collins will oversee the club. She commented that United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County is seeking “someone with a passion for the community and kids in the Carpinteria Valley” to fill the director position at the local club. During Grigsby’s stint as the club’s director, he oversaw successfully completed renovations to the gym floor. Grigsby, who is said to have left his post to spend more time with his family, was employed by United Boys & Girls Clubs of SB County for several years, beginning in the Goleta club.

Memorial Day event seeks flowers, wreaths

Organizers of the annual Memorial Day Ceremonies at Carpinteria Cemetery are seeking individuals and civic groups who wish to present flowers or wreaths at the event on Monday, May 30. The ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. and will include the presentation of the colors, the singing of the national anthem, a keynote speaker and the reading of the names of local residents who have fallen in America’s wars. Ceremonies conclude with the playing of TAPS and a flyover of military aircraft (weather permitting). To confirm a presentation, contact Peter Bie at peterbie@cox.net or call 259-9779 and leave a message including the names of those presenting and on behalf of what group, organization or individual.

Dairy memories sought by Historical Society

An upcoming issue of the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society’s newsletter, “The Grapevine,” will focus on the history of Monte Vista Dairy, which was located off Linden Avenue. Writer Jon Washington is seeking memories related to the dairy that he can incorporate into the feature article. Anyone who has personal memories or can provide names of others who might should email jonwashington@hotmail.com by Tuesday, May 31. Anyone with photos of the dairy should take them to the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History, 956 Maple Ave., for museum Director David Griggs.
