Public invited to June 6 Sur iner environmental review meeting

The co ent period for the ur iner Inn Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is open now through June 27, and the city of Carpinteria has scheduled a public scoping meeting on June 16, inviting members of the public to give their feedback on what should be included in the EIR. The city council approved a contract with the Environmental Science Associates in April to prepare the EIR documents for the project, with a cost of $258,890 to be paid by the developers.

Opponents of the boutique hotel have argued that it would negatively change the small downtown feel, while supporters have said it will boost the local economy and encourage more foot tra c in the area.

Under the agreement with the city, the land would be leased to the developers for 55 years for 5.5% of appraised fair market value in annual base rent, and the de elopers would pay the city . of gross re enue. ur iner nn de elopers would also uild a new, space par ing lot across the railroad tracks, to make up for any loss of parking by the hotel development, resulting in a net plus of parking spots. All of these parking spots would remain available for public use.

The city of Carpinteria’s Architectural Review Board recommended the approval of the project’s design at a December eeting, where ore than two do en public commenters spoke out against the project, stating it was too big for the area and could cause tra c congestion. ur iner nn representati es said in a newsletter sent out last week that they hope they’ll have permission within a year to construct the inn.

The Pledge of Allegiance is traditionally conducted by all members of the city council at the beginning of each meeting. ’ll e a staining fro the ag salute today, exercising my constitutional right to freedom of speech, and in acknowledgment of the federal government’s violence in Los Angeles and across the country,” Solórzano said at the start of the June 9 Carpinteria City Council meeting.

The state of California sued the Trump administration on June 9, stating the president was “intentionally causing chaos, terrorizing

communities, and endangering the principles of our great democracy” by calling in the military against the state governor’s wishes.

On Monday, the Carpinteria City Council designated June 2025 as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in the city of Carpinteria. Pride Month is recognized each year across the United States in June, commemorating the June 1969 Stonewall Riots, a series of protests against a June 1969 police raid on a New York City gay bar.

“The city of Carpinteria recognizes and honors the struggle for liberation against discrimination threatening the rights of LGBTQ+ people to feel safe in their own community,” the proclamation reads. “The city of Carpinteria is committed to ongoing support of the visibility, dignity, and equity of LGBTQ+ people in our community through partnerships

At Monday night’s council meeting, the Carpinteria City Council a r ed that Carpinteria will recognize Juneteenth on June 19. Juneteenth is celebrated across the United States each year in recognition of June 19, 1865, when General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and ordered the final enforce ent of the ancipa tion Proclamation, which stated that all enslaved people must be freed.

Councilmembers said in the June 9 proclamation that systemic racism negatively impacts the physical, mental and emotional well-being of over 10,000 Black Santa Barbara County residents, and that African American and Black people have yet to achieve true equality and equity in American society due to chattel slavery.

Ahead of June 23 budget review, city staff review goals, request feedback

BY LIV KLEIN Ahead of the Carpinteria City Council’s budget review on June 23, Carpinteria city staff re uested any final feed ac from the council and the community on the city’s department strategic goals, which will compose the city’s 2025-27 budget development. ac in arch, the council adopted four city council goals and priorities for FY 2025-27: enhance public outreach, education and transparency; maintain a s all eachside town enhance the ual ity of life for residents; and maintain the city’s fiscal sustaina ility.

Since then, various city departments have developed their own strategic goals and objectives to help achieve the council’s overall city goals.

The General Government Department plans to implement one event per district per year in the budget, accounting for sta ng, planning and ar eting. The de partment will also set aside funds within the draft budget for the new State of the City event planned for next year.

These events and programs are intended to increase communication and transparency etween the city staff and the pu lic, according to City anager ichael a ire .

The Community Development Department will translate all CDD-related documents to be more accessible for panish spea ing usiness owners, and the Pu lic or s epart ent is colla o rating with GoGov Software to introduce multilingual translation capabilities. a ire said that one of the city’s pri orities is to initiate long-range planning initiatives.

For Fiscal Year 2025, the city implemented several initiatives to support recruitment and retention, including the adoption of an updated salary schedule for all staff classifications the reclassi fication of the Pu lic or s super isor to Pu lic or s anager to etter align with operational needs; the expansion of bilingual pay eligibility for Service Employees International Union (SEIU)-represented positions; the improvement of employee evaluation tools and performance review processes; the initiation of uarterly all staff eetings to increase engagement; and the launching of an employee recognition program.

While the city’s internship program was on pause during FY 2025 due to udget constraints, staff plans on reen gaging the program next year with the council’s approval.

Jeanne Keatinge 10/01/1949 — 05/27/2025

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jeanne Keatinge.

Jeanne was, in her own words, a very “pretty baby.” Right from the start, she was opinionated about everything, willful, and very smart. The youngest of three children (Nick, Adrienne, and Jeanne), born in El Monte, California to Everett and Winifred Beaver in 1949, Jeanne had a natural curiosity about the world and people around her.

She loved to read — she was a voracious reader er youth was in uenced and shaped by California in its postWorld War II era. She went to Disneyland with her family on opening day in 1955. She was a Girl Scout. She learned to speak Spanish in elementary school and loved to practice speaking it whenever she got the chance. She often talked about childhood friends whose family members had survived the Holocaust.

She was fascinated by Jewish culture. She participated in “duck and cover” air-raid drills in elementary school, which she confessed, “scared (her) to death.” Her family always had dogs when she was growing up. She learned to ice skate at a rink in the San Fernando Valley and how to swim when her father had a pool built in her family’s backyard. She loved musicals and fondly recalled seeing “West Side Story,” “The King and I,” “Sound of Music” and a number of other shows with her older sister Adrienne when she was young.

In 1960, Jeanne helped campaign for John F. Kennedy with her mother. She was 14 years old when he was assassinated, and she was utterly devastated.

The following year, many churches were planning to hold services in honor of the one-year anniversary of his death.

Jeanne’s parents were not religious or spiritual, but Jeanne was curious about religion. he confided in a friend that she wanted to go to church to commem-

orate the loss of President Kennedy, but there just wasn’t a church out there that checked all the boxes for her. The conversation started getting deep and every time Jeanne would say, “I don’t like that churches do this, that, or the other thing,” her friend would reply, “Not at my church they don’t.” Eventually, Jeanne asked, “What church do you go to?” and her friend replied cheerfully, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

This was probably one of the most significant con ersations of eanne’s young life up to that point. She agreed to go to church with her friend on the first anniversary of Kennedy’s death and found a whole community of people that she immediately felt drawn to and that she wanted to know more about. Her parents agreed to let her take the missionary lessons and Jeanne was eventually baptized.

In 1968, a very young and handsome Bob Keatinge returned from serving a mission in Argentina for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bob met Jeanne one night when they both attended a church young adult social, and Jeanne’s good friend introduced them.

“You must be Koko Keatinge’s brother!”

Jeanne exclaimed with a smile — to which Bob stuttered out, “Uh-huh.” Yes, Bob was left completely speechless in that moment, and Jeanne, feeling awkward, excused herself by saying, “Well… it was very nice to meet you,” and she moved on. But Bob couldn’t stop thinking about Jeanne, and he showed up at her house a few days later with his brother Koko, and he asked Jeanne if she wanted to go for a drive with him and his brother. Jeanne asked her father for his permission to go and her father begrudgingly agreed.

This dri e led to o and eanne’s first date. They went to the drive-in to see a double feature, “Bonnie and Clyde” and… well, neither of them can remember what the second movie was, because they were too busy getting to know each other better and didn’t bother to watch the second fil .

Bob and Jeanne were married in the Los Angeles Temple on Friday, June 13, 1969. When asked why they picked Friday the 13th to get married, they said that they figured that if their arriage didn’t work out, they would just blame it on the date. Of course, their marriage was always going to work out, because they were both completely dedicated to making it work.

Bob and Jeanne moved to Carpinteria when Bob did his student teaching with the Carpinteria School District in 1972.

Jeanne and Bob have three daughters: Tracy, Julie, and Dawn. Jeanne helped to financially support her young fa ily y

doing owers and catering for weddings when the girls were young. Jeanne added “theatre mom” to her ever-growing list of titles when Carpinteria High School’s newly established theatre program, the Muses, put on a production of “The Wizard of Oz” one summer, with the girls cast as munchkins. She started helping Principal and Director Ray Hill with props and costumes for all the shows the Muses put on from that point forward and she became his go-to for parental support for many, many years (long after the girls had graduated high school). This eventually led to Jeanne being approached by the music director for Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera (SBCLO), Elise Unruh, to work for her newly established musical theatre company.

Jeanne’s work with SBCLO brought her so uch oy and personal fulfill ent.

The friendships she formed changed her irrevocably. Jeanne initially worked as the prop mistress for SBCLO and then eventually became the wardrobe mistress.

As the wardrobe mistress, she lugged countless loads of laundry home after midnight and then hauled it back to the theater the next day. She spent hours and hours scavenging costume pieces at thrift stores, fitting actors and sewing in da p theater basements. When SBCLO produced “42nd Street,” she hand-stitched hundreds of shiny silver dimes onto dresses. In the years she spent working for SBCLO, she perfected the art of the quick-change backstage. If you asked Jeanne what she did for a living during those years, she would say, “I strip em’ and zip em’.”

Jeanne was with SBCLO until it folded in 2001. In 2024, she made a sizable donation to UC Santa Barbara’s Special Collections for Performing Arts of SBCLO photos and documents to preserve the work and memory of SBCLO. She also established the SBCLO Facebook page to connect with the people she loved so dearly.

In addition to her work with SBCLO, Jeanne was a librarian for the Aliso Elementary and Carpinteria High schools.

She was also the Carpinteria High School attendance clerk and she worked in the high school’s career center for periods of time over the years, too.

Her passion for reading was infectious.

She loved everything Jane Austen ever wrote and was a huge fan of the Harry Potter series. She loved participating in the “Battle of the Books” program.

She really enjoyed connecting with the students who visited her in the library, always offering an ear, a shoulder to cry on, and sage advice. In 2017, at the age of 68, she retired so that she could spend

more time with Bob. Jeanne was a member of the Carpinteria Ward (recently renamed the Rincon Ward) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for over 50 years. Some of her closest and best friendships were formed within the walls of the church she literally helped to build from the ground up. The Carpinteria Ward was the family she chose. The Olmstead, Donovan, Anderson, illiford, Taff, Cha lee, owen, Brantingham, Espinosa, Sears, Gonzalez, Miles, MacDonald, Norris, Bartlett, Pike, Ready, Saito and Ward families — and many others not mentioned but remembered fondly — have been a constant source of strength and support to Jeanne and her family.

Jeanne loved chocolate and McDonald’s cheeseburgers. She was a RuneScape master. She hated being cold. She lo ed onarch utter ies and watching their metamorphosis. She did not have a college degree, but she was really good at everything she did because she wasn’t afraid to try something new or learn on the job. She loved Hawaii and the smell of plumerias. She made the best Halloween costumes. She hated to wear shoes and preferred to be barefoot. She had a green thu and lo ed freshly cut owers. he could start a conversation with a perfect stranger and then would count them as a new friend. She gave incredible hugs and never missed an opportunity to say, “I love you.” She was stubborn and unrelenting when she wanted something.

She rearranged the furniture in her house regularly just to get a new perspective. he would gi e a person the shirt off her back if they needed it. She had a fantastic singing voice and would often break into song when the moment called for it. Her voice is one of the things we will miss most.

Jeanne was diagnosed with Alzheimer ’s disease in December 2024 and passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Serenity House in Santa Barbara, California.

Jeanne is survived by her beloved husband Bob; her sister Adrienne; her daughters Tracy, Julie and Dawn; her sons-in-law Tony, Nigel and Martin; her grandchildren Alexis, Natalie, Zachary, Samuel, Lauren, Quincy and Jacob; and her great-grandchildren Benson and Conrad.

A memorial service will be held on June 13, 2025, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1501 Linden Ave., Carpinteria, California, at 11 a.m.

Jeanne will then be privately laid to rest at the Carpinteria Ce etery. n lieu of owers, donations may be made to Serenity House in Jeanne’s honor and memory.

Daniel “Danny” Cordero — a devoted follower of Christ, loving husband, proud Marine, father, Papa, coach, mentor and cherished friend — was called home to the Lord on June 6, 2025.

Danny was born to Margaret (Leyva) and Daniel V. Cordero on Sept. 27, 1942.

He was the eldest of four children and was born and raised in Santa Barbara, where the foundations of his strong faith, deep family values, and commitment to ser ice first too root.

Paul Solano, 59, of Carpinteria, California, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2025 after a courageous nearly decade-long battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family. Perspective from a longtime teacher

As a retired classroom teacher with 30 years of classroom experience, a master’s degree in education, a Humanities Teacher of the Year award, and a recipient of a Japan Fulbright Memorial Scholarship a ong other awards, ta e offense to the ranting against the teaching profession by Cody Jacobs of Santa Clarita (CVN Vol. 31, No. 37).

As an education behavior specialist, his role is to support students with unique needs within the school environment. By his own descriptions, he has been unable to do this. It seems he is projecting his failures on to the teachers and schools.

He cites no experience in the classroom as an educator, counselor or support staff which would give credibility to his caustic re ar s. e so ehow feels ustified in describing the inner workings of the classroom as an entirely negative experience for students. On what is he basing this comprehensive negative classroom evaluation?

In my experience, teachers are caring, patient, and giving by nature. They enjoy working with young people and make e ery effort to create an en iron ent for students to grow and learn. They add to their skills through additional coursewor and in ser ice staff training. The teachers I worked with collaborated with colleagues to increase their effecti eness and find solutions to students’ pro le s.

No system is perfect, but the education syste is not ro en. There is an effort to respond to needs and to change when necessary. The vindictive behavior that Mr. Jacobs describes is not a characteristic of educators.

Hotel use of public parking will cause adverse impacts

The city of Carpinteria’s Downtown & Beach parking lot (Lot #3) has a total of 113 spaces. The city is building a new parking lot with a capacity of 93 spaces.

The hotel will be built on Lot #3, leaving

educational needs over behind-the-scenes cost-cutting.

We ask the school board to honor the public process, listen to families, and make decisions in the light of day — with children’s best interests at heart.

There will be adverse impacts when a hotel uses public parking lots. The city uses the concept of conjunctive parking (shared daily spaces) to determine parking supply; spaces to shop during the day and then at night the same space for dinner. The proposed hotel would operate under the city’s conjunctive parking concept; the hotel’s usage is for a 24-hour period, and, hotel guests can occupy a space for multiple days, too.

With the same street entry to the hotel and public parking, the 46 spaces will be directly in front of the hotel’s entrance.

Time will tell whether those parking spaces will be predominately used for the hotel. The applicant’s own tra c study had a peak shared hotel parking demand of 56 on weekdays and 54 on weekends.

The adverse impact is the available supply for all other downtown and beach daily visitors, drastically reducing the available supply of spaces for day users who do not have EV vehicles. Potentially having only 60 to 70 spaces of the 139 planned number of spaces, which is a drastic reduction from the current 113 spaces in Lot #3.

The city needs to do their own tra c studies during peak summer periods, factor in 24-hour users, and identify enforceable mitigation for Lot #3 to remain public.

A lack of transparency in CUSD

As a parent at Carpinteria Family School, I am deeply concerned by the Carpinteria Unified School District’s recent actions that suggest a troubling lack of transparency and disregard for due process.

Grade levels at our school are quietly being eliminated — without proper public notice, agenda placement, or formal board votes, as required by the Brown Act. This approach denies the community a voice in decisions that directly impact students and undermines trust in our school board.

Worse still is how these changes are communicated. For the 2024–2025 school year, families were informed just one week before school started that kindergarten and first grade would no longer e offered. This left our fa ily and any others scra ling to find suita le alternatives. Such short notice shows a clear lack of empathy for the children and families our district is meant to serve.

While Carpinteria Family School is directly affected, the pattern of poor communication, lack of transparency, and disregard for community input should concern all families in the Carpinteria public school system.

Repeated parent outreach has gone unanswered. Emails are ignored. There is no eaningful effort to engage fa ilies or respond to community concerns. This is not the leadership our students deserve.

We understand budget constraints are real. But eliminating entire grade levels without open discussion, community input, or transparency is unacceptable.

The Department of Air Force is hosting in-person public hearings on the draft Environmental Impact Statement authorizing 100 SpaceX launches annually at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

A caller who is renting a home on the P olo F ield reported that several people forced their way into her rental home and started yelling and insulting her family. D eputies arrived and contacted six people, who admitted entering the home after they were directed to come look at the damaged caused by the caller.

The Alcazar announces return of one-act play festival

The Hanne Pedersen One-Act Play Festi al featuring si one act plays created y writers fro anta ar ara, entura and Los ngeles counties returns to The Alcazar Theatre for the second year this week.

Erynn Escalante is new arts center events coordinator

Erynn Escalante is the new facility and events coordinator for the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, the center announced this week. She will lead the ic off for the upco ing ree Co u nity Concert eries, which egins une at the arts center.

Escalante — née Wanek — was born and raised in Carpinteria. She told the arts center she is “proud to ser e a i rant local nonprofit in the heart of y ho etown. s the facility and e ents coordinator, she supports a wide range of progra s and e ents, including the concert series, fundraising e ents, the oliday esti al of Trees and ore.

Hooded oriole chicks edge after only two weeks. Both parents continue feeding them.

If you are looking for a reason to be happy, look no further than the birds that surround us.

Right now, it is the height of baby bird season.

As dawn breaks, songbirds sing to declare their territories. Then they get back to the business of nest building, incubating eggs and feeding their hungry babies — on an astonishingly rapid time scale.

If you have a bird feeder, you might notice that it is particularly busy right now as there are more mouths to feed. t y house, at first light, can see the white-breasted nuthatch parents heading headfirst down the tree trun for a rea fast of sun ower seeds.

They grab a seed from the feeder, then y up into the ranches where their two edglings wait, shi ering their wings.

This baby behavior means, “Feed me!”

The babies greet their parents with excited squeaks. The parents demonstrate how to ha er open the sun ower seed with their beak against the trunk, then pop the kernel into the babies’ mouths.

“Now you try…”

As I walk down to the avocado orchard, I can hear the hungry cries of baby Western bluebirds coming from the bluebird box that we installed two years ago.

Last year, the adult bluebirds both died with babies in the nest, possibly a result of a nearby pesticide spraying. We watched the female lie on the ground dying for no other explicable reason. Heartbreaking.

We took the surviving babies to the Santa Barbara Wildlife Rescue.

But this year, so far so good. Both parents are working dawn to dusk feeding fi e a ies. t’s a ad scra le as lueird chic s edge within three wee s.

I bring meal worms purchased at Alley Pets, our local pet supply store, to sprinkle on the feeding platform we built nearby. As soon as I turn my back, the fe ale is on the , stu ng as any

of the wriggling worms in her mouth as she can. She drops one, picks up an alternate, and then another falls. Finally, she ies the short distance to the o and up pop fi e s all heads with huge gaping mouths, which we can see through a slit near the top of the box.

The brilliant-colored male bluebird arrives with some bugs too. As they deliver food, they depart with the avian equivalent of dirty diapers. The babies excrete their poop in a mucous membrane, making it easier for their parents to carry it out and keep the nest clean.

Baby bluebirds, robins, phoebes, orioles and swallows all do this.

Baby songbirds need constant care and attention. They are born naked, with their eyes shut, and they must be fed often.

These featherless babies look like they are all mouth, with beaks highlighted with a bright yellow lining. It’s a visual cue to parents: “Food goes here.” The adults care for their young while they grow feathers, learn to y, and find food for themselves — all the while trying to avoid being eaten.

Ducks, geese, quail, and shorebirds like killdeers or snowy plovers on the other hand, have “precocious young.” Their brains are more fully formed at birth, and they hatch already feathered. The chicks can run, so it’s up to them to stick with mom or dad and forage for food, copying their parents.

Mama mallards sleep with the babies tucked beneath their breasts. But housecats or racoons can easily find the on the ground. Domestic cats are arguably the biggest threat to baby birds. Even wellfed cats are relentless predators. They are not mean. It’s just their nature.

Many baby birds go through a vulnera le stage efore they can y well. watched a family of oak titmouse babies leave their safe tree hole. The parents continued to feed them on the ground.

Come evening, they huddled together on a tree trunk about two feet up. I rushed out the next morning to see them. All that was left was a pile of feathers. A neighborhood cat had come into my yard at night and found the . The parents were ying around, ouths filled with food, calling they could not seem to understand where their chicks had gone. Please keep your cats inside at night, especially at this time of year.

How to help baby birds Keep your cats inside, especially at night, during nesting season. Babies leave the nest before they can fly effectively and are easy pickings for cats.

If you find a baby bird, don’t assume it is abandoned. Many birds feed their chicks on the ground for the first while. Observe it for a time. If you are sure the bird is abandoned, please call the Wildlife Helpline at the Santa Barbara Wildlife Rescue which is available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at (805) 681-1080.

Newly-hatched baby snowy plovers feed themselves. The papa plover keeps an eye out for danger.

Please don’t trim trees or use pesticides during the breeding season. Schedule vegetation and tree trimming between September and December. With the increased building of human homes, wildlife has lost theirs. But your yard can help provide food, cover and nesting sites.

Report your sightings of nesting and breeding bird behavior to the Breeding Bird Study (BBS) at santabarbaraaudubon.org/submit-bbs-sighting. Local birders Mark Holmgren, Adrian Forsyth and Steve Colwell are recording this data on maps and hope eventually to build a data base that kids and adults can use to answer their questions about local birds. On Friday, June 6, members of the Lions Club of Carpinteria prepared a tri-tip dinner for seniors fro Carpinteria igh chool efore the students headed off to Magic Mountain for senior night.

Lion Douglas Treloar said the Lions will make tri-tip for the high school on certain occasions, usually for sporting events. The Lions who cooked for CHS seniors included Ron Tito, Steve Smith, Ray Lane, Ken Towers and Casey Balch.

Noon Rotary learns about HopeNet of Carpinteria

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon recently heard from Becki Norton and Amrita al , oard e ers for ope et of Carpinteria, a grassroots organi ation that provides resources to help prevent suicide. ope et, a local non profit organi ation, offers education, resources, and support to address suicide and prevention and improve overall mental health,” the pair said.

The organi ation holds two e ents each year the annual Candlelight igil and the Mental Health & Wellness Faire, held Sept. 10 in honor of World Suicide Prevention Day. This year, the events will be held once again at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center on Sept. 10.

Morning Rotary celebrates outgoing president Mary Layman

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning held a step-down dinner to honor club President Mary Layman, whose term ends at the end of June, on Wednesday, May 28 at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center. Stephen Gerteis will assume the role of president on July 1.

The dinner had a nautical theme — a nod to Layman’s love of taking cruises with her family, according to club member Eric von Schrader. Layman was presented with awards for service to Rotary, and club members recounted the club’s accomplishments during each month of Layman’s presidency with a thirty-footlong scroll listing the achievements.

The three year progra had een filled with accolades in achie e ent, and y the final year isitors throughout the state and eyond were noc ing down the door to witness the agic within.

The Canalino Title Preschool progra had een appro ed y the ederal ducation epart ent in under President i y Carter’s ad inistration.

Today, dual language odels of schooling are popular in the . ., and liso chool in Carpinteria was ust awarded a istinguished chool award y the California tate epart ent of ducation this year. liso’s dual language odel undou tedly factored in winning the award, ut ac in , one had to loo to Canada and their dual language odels in rench and nglish for inspiration. s the director of the CLC, had years of de elop ental and achie e ent data a aila le to e a out the children who entered indergarten at Canalino. studied the data, and one thing was clear as a group, Latino children entered the CLC nota ly ehind in school readiness. n particular, the data showed that Latino children who ca e fro panish spea ing ho es were the least prepared to egin school. t did not atter whether these children had participated in ead tart, any other preschool progra , or si ply stayed at ho e. different ethodology was needed for the . The Cu ins Language nterdependence ypothesis fit the ill. n a nutshell, Cu ins’ hypothesis stated that to de elop and achie e est in a second language nglish in this case the learner had to ha e a strong co and of the ho e language, one deeloped in cogniti e understanding. e called it Cogniti e cade ic Language Proficiency s ills C LPs . udi entary co unication s ills were not enough.

The solution to eatinge and yself was thus to create a progra and ethodology where the ho e panish language was strongly de eloped and ser ed as a ridge to the learning of nglish. f one learns a higher cogniti e concept in the ho e language, one can learn it in the second language uch easier, and the parents can e rought along as partners in the process. fter we were awarded the Title grant for a three year period, our tas was to find instructors who could carry out the ethodology. The teachers had to e fully uent in panish and trained in language learning instruction techni ues. inding such instructors was not easy. t too al ost four onths to find the right people.

Then, the iracle of etty autista happened. was conducting a Title parent eeting and e plained that the C had een awarded a Title grant, ut that we could not find ualified teaching talent. One of the parents raised her hand to infor that her other had een a

teacher in the outh erican country of Colo ia. eeting was arranged.

Oh, what an inter iew s. autista was e erything and ore than we could ha e hoped. he had operated a pri ate school, had een a trainer of teachers and run educational state conferences. hat a resu ut there was a huge pro le . he didn’t spea nglish was told outright y an ad inistrator in the C that s. autista would ha e to e hired o er y dead ody. i es On the other hand, another ad inistrator ad ised e hen you hire your lead teacher, a e sure you select the one that will ensure success. t’s your head on the line if the progra fails. I decided that our superintendent, Dr. William T. Carty — another person less than enthusiastic about bilingual education — needed to meet Ms. Bautista. I knew how much he valued high quality employees. I thought he would see what I was seeing in this candidate.

An interview committee of citizens and staff, including r. eatinge and Dr. Carty was convened. Dr. Carty was super impressed. There would be two instructors hired. We had interviewed one person earlier who had also made a great impression on us, but spoke no Spanish.

Dr. Carty and I came up with a plan.

We hired Beverly Forsythe to oversee the program’s administrative duties and help in the teaching of English in the basic communicative sense of the assignment and hired Ms. Bautista to carry out the primary teaching duties of turning the panish spea ers into strong first language learners cognitively — that is, in CALPs. Carpinteria’s softball program had one of its toughest seasons in recent memory, but the Warriors fought through every game and improved all year long.

Carpinteria ase all started the season on a high note with a fi e ga e win strea before the Warriors went on to a rough stretch with eight straight losses. Near the end of the season, the team went on another late win streak but fell just short of the C playoffs.

But the Warriors had plenty to celebrate during the season, with memorable game-winning home runs and standout performances from its balanced roster of scrappy players. unior pitcher and infielder a e artine earned a spot on irst Tea ll League after a solid season on the mound. Fellow junior Sam Medel earned a spot on the econd Tea , along with fresh an onah ernande , who ade a splash in his first season on varsity.

The trio of Aiden Alcaraz, Dallas Bartholic and Charlotte Cooney rounded out the end-of-year awards with Honorable Mentions.

Boys Volleyball

Carpinteria oys olley all snuc its way into the C uarterfinals this season with two ho ecourt sweeps in the playoffs, despite finishing third in the regular season league standings.

Juniors Alan Maya and Jesus “Chuche” Campuzano led the team through much of the year, and the two teammates were both rewarded with spots on First Team All League.

Fellow juniors Rafael Cintura and Alariuziel Rodriguez both earned spots on the Second Team., while three more juniors — Jesus “Chuy” Reyes, Kevin Bernal and Rafael Montes — each earned Honorable Mentions. All of this year’s league honorees will be returning next season.

Meet Angel, a two-and-a-half-year-old petite pitbull who loves playing with toys, fetching tennis balls and taking walks. Angel, who is with Santa Barbara County Animal Services (SBCAS), is looking for her forever home. SBCAS volunteers said she’s been on many day trips and is always happy to go on outings.

Shelter volunteers added: “She’s had a few shelter breaks and does great in a home environment. Angel is sweet, affectionate, smart and ready for a home.”

Interested in fostering or adopting Angel he’s at the C shelter in oleta at 5473 Overpass Road. The shelter is open Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Look out for new Summerland park upgrades

The renovations for the park — which is open daily, 8 a.m. – sunset — took roughly four weeks, according to Wade Cowper, Lee’s chief of staff. The upgrades were designed with the Pacific Ocean in mind, with the shapes and colors of waves seen throughout the park. It’s intended for children aged five to 12 years old.

“The playground follows on significant investment in opening up new areas of the park to the public, new picnic areas, lawn renovation, dog wash station, parking lot paving and the new park entry currently under construction,” Cowper said in an email last week.
