The Golden Hour

By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter Citing increasing costs and a rocky economy, the Selbyville Town Council this week approved a 30-cent property tax hike, increasing the annual fee from $1.85 per $100 of assessed property value to $2.15 per $100 of assessed property value, and passing the $9.7 million budget for the Town’s fiscal year. At the Monday, Feb. 5, meeting, the council also approved increases in fees the Town charges. All increases went into effect immediately, as the Town’s fiscal year runs from Feb. 1 to Jan. 31. During the meeting, Town Administrator Stacey Long called the tax increase “very modest” and said taxes had not been raised in many years. The Town needs funds for expenses including hiring more police officers and a new administrative assistant, she said. “The town is growing. We need to recruit police officers. All the departments have to grow, and we have to keep up with staffing, and many departments are understaffed,” Long said. See SELBYVILLE page 4
