Bethany dealing with dune damage again By Susan Canfora Staff Reporter Following the nor’easter than significantly damaged Bethany Beach’s dune and beach on Oct. 11 and 12, several beach access points were closed, but beginning early this week the beach was accessible at some street ends, including Oakwood, Maplewood, Ashwood,

Cedarwood, Fourth Street and Fifth Street, with handicapped access at Oceanview Parkway. The beach and dune “took a significant hit,” Mayor Ron Calef said at the Friday, Oct. 17, Bethany Beach Town Council meeting. “Our streets were flooding. Our police and Public Works departments put in many long hours. Police went door to

door, advising everyone north of Garfield Parkway of the situation and necessary safety steps. We made it through the storm, but it demonstrates the extreme importance of our engineered system and the Loop [Canal] dam, which could have prevented most of the street flooding,” he said of the proposed flood-control project. The dunes protected the boardwalk,

businesses, bandstand and homes, but beach replenishment is now “a major need,” Calef said, adding that there is a 6-foot drop from the boardwalk down to the beach, and it’s likely to get bigger. “It can’t be repaired,” he said of any potential short-term fix. “There is not

Meyer seeks fed help for local beaches Gov. Matt Meyer sent a letter on Oct. 21 to President Donald Trump, urging immediate federal action to restore Delaware’s beaches and critical coastal protection systems following significant coastal damage from recent nor’easters. “Our beaches are part of Delaware’s critical infrastructure that protects homes, roads and jobs,” Meyer said. “On top of revenue losses and increased costs to the state due to federal legislation, Delaware has been hit hard by recent nor’easter weather. We cannot wait for another storm to hit or for our bridges and highways to collapse to make improvements that will keep our communities safe. We need swift federal action to repair the damage, strengthen our shoreline, and ensure that our coastline is safe and resilient whenever the next storm hits.” In his letter, Meyer requested that the president direct the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) invoke its emergency restoration authority under Section 8327 of the Water Resources Development Act of 2022. The law allows the Secretary of the Army, using existing See FUNDS page 8

Millville, Food Bank of Delaware help out 50 families By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter The Town of Millville last week served as a host site for a collaborative effort with the Food Bank of Delaware that resulted in the distribution of “essential resources” to 50 area families.

On Oct. 16, volunteers, local officials and Town staff worked together to distribute food items to individuals and families facing food insecurity in Millville and surrounding towns, according to Town Manager Eileen Scerra. “We are honored to have partnered with the Food Bank of Delaware and to

serve as a host site for this important initiative,” Scerra said. “Seeing the community come together to support one another was both humbling and inspiring.” Scerra expressed gratitude to all who helped make the event a success. “The Food Bank was beyond grateful

to visit Millville to help reach more Delawareans with the food and hope they need,” Scerra said. The Town of Millville plans to continue the partnership with the Food See EFFORT page 9
