Muscle cars are officially back, no midlife crisis necessary Let’s start with the Detroit king of muscle, Dodge, who brought back the Challenger in 2009 and Charger in 2006. The 2012 Dodge Challenger packs a whopping 470-horsepower Hemi engine that will run from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds. Its body is a little wider than the original, but just as dynamic, and just as gorgeous. The 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 is a stunning car, with a lot of a power and some new features compared to the prior years including: 20-inch forged and alumi-

num wheels, an adaptive damping suspension system, exclusive new front and rear fas cias and a new rear spoiler. With a 6.4 Hemi V8 engine holding over 460hors ep ower, this new breed of Chargers will remind car buffs how great of a muscle car the Dodge Charger was—and is. The heavy hitter in the American muscle game, Chevy, always showcased and boasted the Camaro as its leader in the American muscle car conversation until the vehicle was taken off productions line in 2002. But in 2010, Chevy brought back the Camaro, Camaro SS and Camaro LTZ, and the buzz was extremely good. As

Will drivers have no choice but to be green?

Small cars may be the future norm

Consumers have long operated under the presumption that “bigger is better,” which is often reflected in the size of the vehicles on the road. However, future mandates on fuel economy could significantly increase the number of compact cars being bought and sold, and big cars might get a run for their money. In the past, bigger cars might have been the popular trend. Muscle cars of the 1960s, giant sedans of the 1970s and even the pumped-up SUVs of modern day are all bigger vehicles. But with the advent of the fuel-efficient car and hybrid or electric models, many people could find themselves driving a

compact car in the next few years. According to U.S. federal requirements, automotive industry products must average 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016, and proposed regulations could increase that number to 62 mpg by 2025. What this means for auto makers and consumers alike is that small cars could grow increasingly popular. Automakers are already beginning to invest heavily in smaller vehicles. Compact cars were popular and prominently featured attractions at auto shows throughout 2010 and into 2011. Consumers who once leaned toward larger vehicles may now purchase compact cars thanks to See Green cars on page 4

of June, sales of the Camaro and Challenger have risen more than 10 percent across the U.S., according to AutoTrader.com. The 2011 Camaro has a sleek 312-horsepower V6 engine at 29 mpg, compared to the 1967 Chevy Camaro which had only 290-horsepower as a V8. Just because it has a smaller engine, doesn’t mean it has smaller performance.

By Michael Masucci Jr. Guys love muscle cars. Horsepower, torque, exhaust kits, chrome, racing tires, body kits, custom headers—these terms are like Bible quotes to some men out there, who just can’t get enough of cars—more specifically muscle cars. Good thing for them, muscle cars are back, and they are hot. And fortunately, the three Detroit powerhouses, Chevy, Dodge and Ford, all have packed a 201112 punch of revolutionized cars that look and run just like their predecessors did in the 60s and 70s.

Ford never got rid of the Mustang, like the Chevy did to the Camaro, and Dodge did to the Callenger, but they have gone through some body and engine changes over the years since the late 90s, finally coming to the agreement on the fifth generation body style in 2005, that represents the classic look of the mustang more than 40 years ago. Looks aside, the Ford Mustang Shelby G T 5 0 0 and B o ss 302, are huge powerpacking cars. Tips to save some dough when hitting the pumps The summer travel season is finally in full swing. While gas prices remain high, many major retailers are taking steps to cut costs for disgruntled drivers. Wal-Mart is leading the charge, reducing their fuel prices by 10 cents per gallon for the summer months. The retail giant will offer discounted prices at gas

stations in 18 states until Sept. 30. Many other stores have followed suit with their own deals. Here’s a list of other major merchants helping Americans save at the pump this summer. CVS The drug store chain is offering a free $10 gas gift card to ExtraCare Rewards members when they purchase $30 worth of select products. The promotion runs through Aug. 28, so there’s still plenty of time to cash in. Kroger and Shell The grocery chain has been offering discounted gas for quite awhile now, but their partnership with Shell has really turned up the savings. With 100 points on your rewards card, you’ll get 10 cents off per gallon on a fill up at both Kroger and Shell stations. If you’re not satisfied with that discount, Kroger also offers $1 off per gallon when you earn 1,000 points on your rewards card. Kellogg’s Do you eat a bowl of cereal every morning for breakfast? If so, you’re well on your way to saving on fuel. When you collect 10 UPCs from cereal boxes and mail them in, Kellogg’s will send you a $10 prepaid gas card. Submissions must be received by Dec. 31 and there’s a limit of five cards per household. Warehouse clubs Big warehouse stores like Costco and Sam’s Club keep popping up all over the place. While they typically have some of the lowest gas prices around, a fill-up still requires a membership. Joining the club can be done for around $50, so if your car guzzles gas, the long-term

savings are worth it. Gas discounts aren’t the only way to save, though. Here are a few more general savings tips to help you travel for less this summer. Gift cards Gift cards are becoming a currency all of their own. Cards for popular fuel stops like Shell can be bought and sold at sites like GiftCardGranny.com. Also, with merchants like Wal-Mart reducing gas prices for the summer, a discount Wal-Mart gift card can really compound the savings. Low octane gas Unless you’re driving a top of the line sports car, premium gas probably isn’t necessary. Most cars on the road will perform just fine with lower octane gasoline and it’ll save you a couple of bucks on a fill. Slow and steady If you want to save some extra money, let up on that lead-foot for just a little while. Driving at high speeds and starting and stopping quickly burns more fuel. Research Instead of waiting to hit the pump until you’re down to the last drop, plan your purchase in advance. Websites like GasBuddy.com will help you find the lowest local gas prices. They even have a mobile app to help you save on the go. Ride sharing A combination of frugality and going green has led to a resurgence of carpools. If you’re trying to track one down, websites like eRideShare.com and CarpoolConnect.com are useful resources for both drivers and riders.

Seneca Federal goes Red for Women Employees at Seneca Federal Savings and Loan Association participated in the annual Go Red for Women campaign earlier this year on Friday Feb. 4, 2011. According to Katrina Russo, President - CEO, “This American Heart Association campaign encouraged awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, by wearing red the first Friday in February, and provided education to women which ultimately save more lives, She continued, “The movement harnessed the energy, passion and power of women as a means of banning together and collectively wiping out heart disease through awareness and education and challenged all women to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. When asked, why did Seneca Federal take part in this event? The President stated, “Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women and affects people we love in our personal lives, people in our work environment and customers we have known for many years. It’s hard NOT to know somebody who has been affected by heart disease or stroke either directly or indirectly. Ms. Bodnar, EVP-CFO stated, “It is our intention as a mutually owned, community based Association made up of a majority of women to take part in and donate to events such as this one

Also, in 2011, I started offering Zumba classes to our employees as a fun and free way to get in shape and improve our heart health. For the last 83 years, the Association has given back to its community in many ways. Seneca Federal mainly supports the North Syracuse, Liverpool and Baldwinsville areas through school, church and local organization where the three branches are located. In 2010, we supported organizations such as the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild, Francis House, high school marching bands, Vera House, The Food Bank of CNY and local volunteer fire departments, to name a few. “We felt this was a far reaching and important campaign to become involved in, said Lisa Hetko, Branch Manager. She continued, “Visit the GoRed-

ForWomen.org website and you will learn that heart disease and stroke claims the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women we’re not paying attention. In fact, many even dismiss heart disease as an ‘older man’s disease’. Our local community banks, such as Seneca Federal, are strong, safe and secure financial institutions focusing on what is best for our customers and communities stated Mrs. Russo who also added, “In the midst of the continued uncertainty in the economy, we will continue to offer the lowest possible lending rates, the highest deposit account rates as well as continuing to give something back to support our communities. It is our pleasure, as one of the community banks in upstate New York, to give support to endeavors such as the Go Red For Women campaign on the local level.

Lou’s Car Care now has access to EcoPower a new top-quality motor oil that is environmentally friendly and priced similar to standard motor oils. “Consumers want to make a positive environmental impact so they are very interested in finding green products and services said Bob Craycraft, president and CEO for Safety-Kleen. “In a recent market test, 46 percent of all consumers we surveyed had a much more positive opinion of service locations that offered our environmentally-friendly oil change. By making EcoPower more widely available, we’re meeting that need for both retailers and consumers. For the past 20 years, Safety-Kleen has produced high-quality motor oils for large commercial fleets and the federal government by re-refining used oil it collects at thousands of car dealerships, automotive retailers and quick lube facilities in North America. Safety-Kleen is now making its re-refined oil available to consumers under the brand name EcoPower. EcoPower is being offered by growing number of fast lubes, car dealers, tire stores and other automotive service outlets throughout North America. Safety-Kleen’s re-refined oil meets or exceeds all applicable specifications set by the American Petroleum Institute and the Society of Automotive Engineers, and is currently used by many large organizations, including the U.S. military, numerous state governments and commercial automotive fleets. In 2010, Safety-Kleen collected more than 200 million gallons of used oil and recycled approximately 139 million of it into base oil products for re-use in the marketplace. “Re-refining used oil saves energy, said Craycraft. “It takes up to 85 percent less energy

(From left) Lou Cannata Jr., Luigi Cannata, Lou Cannata Sr. and Randy Wilson are the go to guys at Lou’s Car Care. to produce a gallon of lubricating oil from used oil than to produce the same oil from a gallon of crude, and the end product is identical to traditional motor oils made from crude and meets the same stringent specifications. Craycraft said the end result of Safety-Kleen’s re-refining used oil is that it avoids the emission of more than one million metric tons of greenhouse gases each year when compared to refining from crude and burning used oil for energy. “That is equivalent to taking approximately 190,000 cars off the road each and every year, he said. EcoPower motor oil is now available in 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30 and 15W-40 viscosity grades. In addition, all major U.S. car manufacturers have approved the use of Safety-Kleen SAE 5W-20, 5W-30 and 10W-30 ILSAC-certified motor oil in all their cars. The EcoPower SAE 15W-40 grade has also been approved by leading heavy-duty engine manufacturers. About Safety-Kleen Safety-Kleen is a leading North American See Lou’s Car Care on page 7

Hudson & Mowins goes ‘green’ Baldwinsville auto shop installs solar panels By Erin Wisneski Greg and Cathy Hudson are being environmentally responsible. As the owners of Hudson & Mowins, a domestic and foreign auto repair shop in Baldwinsville, the two have opted to install solar panels on their building’s roof, harvesting their own electricity from the sun. “Green is good,” Cathy said, adding they decided to install the solar panels because there were state and federal incentives to go green, which partially covered the expenses of purchasing and installing the solar panels. “It was the way to go.” Over a 30-year period, the statistics are overwhelming. According to Cathy, an estimated 1,382,000 kWh of electricity will be produced eliminating the need to burn more than 1,123,730 pounds of coal, which results in more than 1,094 tons of C02 being

saved from entering the atmosphere. “And, an unbelievable 27,380 trees would have to be planted to offset as much pollution that will be saved,” Cathy said. “This decision was a no-brainer.” Reinforcement of interior steel beams on the shop’s ceiling is currently underway, and upon completion the Hudsons’ plan to have an open house to show customers and the community the finished project. “We’re doing the responsible thing,” Cathy said. Hudson & Mowins, located at 62 East Genesee St. in Baldwinsville, is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The AAA approved shop and NAPA AutoCare Center offers complete maintenance and repair services (including brakes, suspension, electrical, air conditioning, tires, exhaust and more) and provides inspections, tune-ups and fuel injection cleaning services with computerized, up to date testing equipment and machinery. escalating fuel costs and more eco-conscious consumerism. Compact hybrids have already become trendy among the celebrity set, and many fans may choose to emulate their favorite A-listers. The “green”movement has certainly changed consumer perception of small cars. What’s more, automakers are revamping features that normally caused people to shy away from compact cars. Interior space is being reconfigured to offer more headroom and legroom. Plus, automak-

ers are packing compacts with innovative features and gadgets that make them appealing to an increasingly tech-savvy society. According to Ralph Gilles, Dodge CEO and Chrysler Group design chief, “Not only do people want them, but [the cars] are becoming more interesting.” Even people who are not fiscally or environmentally-minded may lean toward the abundance of smaller cars at dealerships. That’s because compact cars

are affordable first cars or good options for singles and older couples looking to downsize. Young males may consider sporty, suped-up coupes. With small cars, there certainly is a widespread market. The hardest demographic to convince to switch to a smaller car will be the average family. Families with multiple children might feel compact cars don’t provide the room needed to transport everyone. Automakers will no doubt address the needs of families in years to come.

Compact cars like the Toyota Prius could grow increasingly visible on the nation’s roadways thanks to future government regulations regarding fuel economy.

Longley Dodge is still going strong By Sarah Hall

Longley Dodge has seen a number of changes over the years, but that hasn’t stopped the dealership, located on Route 57 in Fulton, from continuing to grow and thrive. Longley Dodge started out a body shop in 1947, then started selling GMC trucks in 1956; the dealership sold the brand until the early 1960s. They took on Studebakers in 1959 and sold the iconic models until the brand folded in 1966. In 1963, the shop started selling Dodge vehicles, and they’ve been doing business that way ever since. So what accounts for their longevity? “We’re a family organization,” said owner Dennis Longley, who runs the business with his cousin Gene and son Doug. “I think that has a lot to do with it, especially since we’re in a small community. People like to come here and know they’re going to get good service.” And that service isn’t overbearing, Longley said. “Our sales staff doesn’t pressure you,” he said. “They’re not pushy. We don’t like to operate that way, because it doesn’t really serve the customer as well.” That’s why people keep coming back. “A lot of our business is repeat business,” Longley said. “People

Par-K Chrysler-Jeep offers newest models 2011 lineup features many enhancements, updates The 2011 Jeep and Chrysler vehicles at Par-K Chrysler-Jeep in Fulton have many updates, including new exteriors, interiors and, in some cases, new engines and transmissions. “They have changed 16 models in 16 months, Par-K General Manager Thomas Gilbo said, crediting new Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne for the changes. “I saw him speak in Orlando, and everything he said would happen, has happened. He said the changes have “definitely been for the better.’ “As the product has been coming in, we’ve been seeing that the interiors are better, the materials used in them are better, and you can feel the difference when you grab the steering wheel, when you touch the door, Gilbo said. “The fabric of the seats are better, and are stain resistant. Jeep updates The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

is all-new, according to Gilbo. “It is a great vehicle and has gotten great write-ups. What is most exciting for Gilbo, however, is the changes to Par-K’s best selling Jeeps, the Compass and Patriot. “They’ve refreshed the Compass, so that it looks like a mini-Grand Cherokee, he said. “They also re-did the interior and it gets great gas mileage – 26 miles per gallon highway and about 22 city. It’s a great-looking 4X4 that is affordable, with an MSRP that starts at $22,700. The Patriot, which Gilbo said has the same engine and transmission as the Compass, also has great gas mileage, but its exterior differs from the Compass. “It is squared off, more like the Jeep Cherokee Sport. Both have all-time all-wheel-drive, and also offer an off-road capability, he said. “We’re in snow country, so these models are very popular. Rounding out the new Jeep offerings for 2011 are the Liberty and

Wrangler. “The Liberty has had enhancements to its interior, and a special edition Liberty Jet will feature 20-inch chrome alloy wheels and chrome moldings for a sporty and attractive exterior. The Wrangler, with an all-new interior, will for the first time be available with a hard top painted the same color as the body. “It’s a very cool, sharp look, Gilbo said. “And in 2012, Jeep Wrangler will have all-new Pentastar V-6 engine with 283 HP. Chrysler models also revamped “The Chrysler Town and Country is all brand-new in 2011, Gilbo said. “With a new engine and transmission, it also features a new interior and exterior. In addition, side detection is standard on all 2011 Town and Country models and there is the option of powered third-row seating, where you push a button and it automatically stows the seats.

Par-K General Manager Thomas Gilbo is proud of his Chrysler line. The Chrysler 300 is also all brand-new, with a 3.6-liter V6 Penestar engine standard. In addition, an available eight-speed transmission will also be coming in the near future. “The engine has the most horsepower for a V6 in its class worldwide, Gilbo said. “With mileage 25 percent better than before, it gets up to 30 miles per gallon. The Chrysler 200, which replaces the Sebring, has also been redesigned and features the same engine,

as does the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Town and Country. To view and test drive any of the new models, visit Par-K ChryslerJeep, Oswego County’s only 5 Star Chrysler dealer.
