Fellows Award Ram Dixit, Ph.D.
Chair of Biology, Professor of Biology, Washington University in St. Louis
Ram Dixit is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis. He has a Ph.D. from Cornell University and conducted postdoctoral research at Penn State University and the University of Pennsylvania before joining the faculty of Washington University as an assistant professor in 2008. Ram is fascinated by the seemingly endless diversity of cell shapes in nature. His research seeks to understand how these beautiful cell shapes arise and how they dynamically change during growth and development to enable organisms to adapt to changing conditions. His work focuses on a filamentous system inside cells called the cytoskeleton, which forms complex 3D architectures to control cell shape. The Dixit lab uses the cortical microtubule
cytoskeleton of land plants as an experimentally tractable system to elucidate fundamental mechanisms controlling the dynamic patterning of the cytoskeleton, how they guide the assembly of the mechanically tough cell wall to sculpt cell shape, and how they react to mechanical stimuli to influence plant morphogenesis. Ram’s work uses a synergistic combination of live imaging, in vitro reconstitution at singlemolecule resolution, molecular genetics, and computational modeling. This multidisciplinary approach has allowed him to discover new components and mechanisms underlying the complex and multiscale process linking microtubule dynamics and organization to cell shape determination.
George Engelmann Interdisciplinary Award
Allison Miller, Ph.D.
Donald Danforth Plant Science Center Member; Professor of Biology, Saint Louis University
Allison J. Miller, Ph.D. is a Professor of Biology at Saint Louis University, PI & a Member at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. In her visionary research, Dr. Miller promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across St. Louis regional institutions and beyond to address agricultural and environmental challenges. Agriculture is the world’s biggest and most rapidly expanding ecosystem. As the population of the planet has grown, modern agriculture has stripped arable land of topsoil and nutrients, exacerbated by a changing climate. The global challenge facing humanity is to restore the health of arable land, increase crop productivity and adjust agriculture to a changing climate. Dr. Miller champions the use of perennials to build a sustainable agricultural system and restore ecosystems. Perennials enrich soil; their deep roots combat erosion and
sequester carbon. In a world where 70% of crops are annuals, conversion of even a fraction to perennial crops would have a significant environmental impact. In her own words, “For years, humans have grown crops to serve human needs, often at the expense of the environment. It’s time we developed crops that can benefit the planet, as well as humans.” St. Louis has an international treasure in Dr. Miller. She is beloved by her scientific peers and energetic in bringing people together to work on both creative new projects and on important traditional projects. She is an impressive, interdisciplinary leader in the botanical and agricultural sciences, and an important contributor to the St. Louis culture of science.

He was recruited to MU and DDPSC for the joint position in 2018. Prior to these appointments, he pursued research at Kansas State University as a graduate research assistant, post-doctoral research associate, and research assistant professor. He is an internationally recognized authority on plant genome engineering with applications in engineered crop resistance to pathogens. He is at the forefront of using CRSIPR/Cas-mediated gene editing and has pioneered
efficient approaches to multiplex guide RNAs that allow him to edit multiple genes or promoters in one step in rice and other crop plants including maize, wheat, sorghum, and soybean. Using technology he’s developed, Yang has succeeded in generating rice plants with multiple promoter edits that render rice plants resistant to a devastating disease, bacterial blight. His research focuses on continual development of genome editing technologies and on host/bacterium interactions with bacterial blight of rice as a model. For his achievements, he was named a 2022 Fellow of AAAS and in 2024 was awarded a Curators’ Distinguished Professorship from MU.
