Academy of Science Programs

Science Careers Explorations Middle and high school students explore STEM careers and experience the interdisciplinary nature of science today in these fun and fast-paced, high-impact small group sessions scheduled throughout the school year. STEM Career programs are offered to schools in the region and directly impact students at a pivotal time in their lives when they are laying the science and technology path for their futures.

Science for the Public Since 1856, the Academy of Science-St. Louis has been a leader in the advancement of science and technology into contemporary society. Today, the Academy offers a broad range of science speakers, tours and community-wide public talks, workshops and citizen science events catering to all ages and backgrounds. STEM professionals increase public awareness of science and its powerful role in shaping our lives.

Teen Science Café At a Teen Science Café, teens have the opportunity to interact with science professionals in an informal and relaxed setting. Teen Science Café is presented and powered by Junior Academy of Science members who serve on the STEM Teens Leadership Council. Teens gain valuable leadership experience, meet and work with other teens interested in science and STEM, and earn service hours. By Teens - For Teens!

Science Fair

Open to students in Grades K-12, the Academy of Science-St. Louis Science Fair is the region’s premier STEM Fair with 80,000 students representing over 200 schools.

Students make real world connections and develop into confident STEM-capable learners. Science Fair inspires the #NextGen of science and engineering leaders! An Honors Division Fair is open to high school students doing collegiate level research.

In my house, science fair is like football season. Being able to explore my science questions through scientific inquiry is very exciting.

BioBlitz The Academy of Science-St. Louis BioBlitz is a Citizen Science exploration and inventory of the biodiversity of urban parks and natural areas. Teams of public volunteers led by biologists, naturalists, and environmental specialists search natural areas, listing as many different species as they can find.

Families with nature lovers, budding scientists and experienced naturalists of all ages are invited to participate.

Junior Academy of Science Middle and high school students from public, private and home schools across the region experience hands-on opportunities in science, engineering and medicine through the Junior Academy. Recognizing each child has potential, Junior Academy membership is open and available to all middle and high school students and offers challenging and engaging science opportunities for a full range of academic levels.

Science Educator Award

Nicole Miller-Struttmann, Ph.D.

Laurence L. Browning, Jr. Assistant Professor Webster University MillerStruttmann has made substantial contributions to science education at the collegiate and K-12 levels as well as to the public understanding of science in the St. Louis community. She has developed a study abroad experience in collaboration with the Universidad de San Francisco, Quito, Ecuador to provide Webster’s biology majors with a truly experiential opportunity studying in the Galapagos Islands. This experience is specifically in line with the mission of Webster University developing global citizens and providing international educational opportunities for all students. Miller-Struttmann has presented and published her research on acoustic properties of f light on bees in PLOS ONE and conducts field research with students in Colorado tracking bee populations with microphones and iPads. The ability to incorporate students in her research agenda is valuable

to the future success of students as well as the education of future scientists.

MillerStruttmann directs the St. Louis Bee Blitz in collaboration with the Academy of Science – St. Louis as a start of National Pollinator Week. This event includes students and adults in the community who become part of the StL Bee Brigaide and Bee Spotters. Participants continue to collect data as citizen scientists and contribute to the ongoing research into pollinators as part of a multi-university research collaboration. MillerStruttmann worked with the St. Louis Public Central Library to develop a pollinator garden creating a community education/ space/garden in downtown St. Louis. This project will provide years of educational opportunities for community members and ongoing outreach activities for the public library.

Innovation Award

Andrew H. Baker, Ph.D.

Materials Engineer, Boeing Research and Technology Next Generation Metals, The Boeing Company Baker’s work has had a significant impact in the fields of metals additive manufacturing (3-D Printing) and aerospace alloy development.

His work has led to a unique understanding of the compositional and microstructural characteristics of metallic additively manufactured components, particularly electron-beam additively manufactured titanium components. From these efforts, he has proposed new nomenclatures for heat treatments of additively manufactured titanium alloys to bridge legacy terminology for wrought titanium material and additively produced material.

As program manager of the DARPA Open Manufacturing program “tiFAB”, Dr. Baker has built and refined a framework that leverages highly pedigreed data and metadata of additive manufacturing processes/material and applies artificial neural network informatics-based approaches for establishing processmicrostructure- property

relationships.

The framework promises to dramatically reduce the period of time typically required to qualify and implement new additive components into aerospace service as well as provide the statistical confidence for the safety considerations of critical airframe structure. In addition to strides made in the additive manufacturing realm, Dr. Baker also continues to contribute to the development and characterization of new aerospace alloys. Through the maturation of microstructurallysensitive fatigue models for aluminum, Dr. Baker’s work allows design engineers to create structure that is lighter and more durable, providing for drastic reduction in fuel consumption and maintenance intervals of aircraft. The models also assist in mitigating the risk of adopting recently developed alloys so that the further benefits in weightreduction, strength, durability, and corrosion-resistance of the alloys themselves can be realized on both legacy and future-build aircraft.

Innovation Award

Rebecca Bart, Ph.D.

Assistant Faculty Member and Principal Investigator Donald Danforth Plant Science Center Bart’s research efforts are dedicated to sustainable crop improvement.

Her research combines genetics with molecular and computational biology to learn about the mechanisms used by hosts and pathogens to recognize and respond to one another and the environment. Dr. Bart articulates this as a Disease Triangle. Dr. Bart was an early and dedicated promoter of genome technologies applied to disease resistance improvement of cassava, a staple food crop in sub-Saharan Africa. Her recent work has used gene editing to make small changes within the cassava genome to promote resistance to both viral and bacterial diseases. More recently, Dr. Bart has applied her Disease Triangle approach to additional non-model crop species such as cotton and sorghum. For example, her lab investigated a re-emergent disease of cotton.

This disease devastated crops in the mid1900s but had been controlled by genetic resistance until a few years ago. Dr. Bart discovered that the majority of cotton planted in the USA has shifted away from the resistant cultivars leading to a re-emergence of this once controlled disease. Her team also discovered novel genes within cotton plants that are co-opted by the pathogen to promote susceptibility. To more directly observe the role of the environment on plant diseases, Dr. Bart is developing high throughput phenotyping methods that will facilitate dissection of the complex interactions embedded within the Disease Triangle. In summary, Dr. Bart and her team are conducting research that will ultimately benefit farmers both here at home and around the world.

Innovation Award

Samantha A. Morris, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Developmental Biology and Genetics Washington University School of Medicine Morris has a strong track record of creating innovative technologies, deploying them to make fundamental discoveries. She has developed a computational tool to assess engineered cell identity, diagnosing aberrant genetic networks to inform and expedite experiments to improve cell identity. This platform has been adopted by labs across the field of regenerative biology. She has continued to innovate, pushing the boundaries of cutting-edge single-cell genomic technologies.

Her most recent methodology, called ‘CellTagging’ enables the simultaneous profiling of lineage and identity at singlecell resolution. The insights provided by this approach have enabled her lab to enhance the fidelity and efficiency of somatic reprogramming. Dr. Morris has made this technology opensource, enabling its adoption by

labs worldwide.

Applying these technologies to a range of biological problems, her lab focuses on how transcription factor overexpression drives changes in the transcriptional program to remodel cell identity, and how it can be exploited to derive desired cell types. Second, the Morris lab transplant engineered cells into the in vivo niche, tracking their maturation in order to understand the steps required to fully differentiate cells in vitro.

Finally, they employ single-cell transcriptomics to understand how cell fate is reprogrammed and matured, formulating a blueprint of cell identity to help engineer fate in vitro.

Ultimately, Dr. Morris wishes to translate new insights in cell fate specification into better human models of disease and eventually into the development of novel therapeutic strategies.

George Engelmann Interdisciplinary Award

Susan K. Dutcher, Ph.D.

Professor of Genetics and Cell Biology and Physiology Washington University School of Medicine Dutcher’s primary area of research is the study of basal bodies and cilia, organelles that are present in most eukaryotic cells. She uses techniques from genetics and genomics, computational biology, cell biology and biochemistry.

For many years she worked to identify genes that are required for the assembly and proper functioning of cilia in the green alga Chlamydomonas. In 2004, she developed a computational, comparative genomics approach that identified a large set of previously unknown cilia/basal body genes, many of which are associated with human disease.

That work, and ones that followed from her group and others, have shown that many human diseases, now known collectively as ciliopathies, are due to malfunctioning of cilia.

This led her to collaborate with clinical scientists studying both pediatric and adult diseases caused by mutations in cilia and

basal body genes.

Chlamydomonas is now a great model system for studying those human diseases because of the ease and speed with which genetic and biochemical experiments can be performed.

She and her collaborators have identified several new genes that cause disease when mutated, can follow up with mechanistic studies to better understand the cause of the phenotype, can identify suppressor genes that alter or alleviate the phenotype and can rapidly screen for therapeutic drugs. She has collaborated with mechanical engineers to understand the generation of waveforms and force. For the last two years she also served as the Acting Director of the McDonnell Genome Institute, carrying on its internationally renowned research on genome sequencing and helping to usher in a new phase of contributing to precision medicine.

George Engelmann Interdisciplinary Award

Eric Miller, D.V.M., Dipl. ACZM

Executive Director, Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute, Saint Louis Zoo Dr. Miller’s decades-long career as a veterinarian and conservationist has taken him around the world. His early years focused on diseases affecting rhinoceroses in zoos and in Africa, and the health of the South China tigers and Giant Pandas. As the Director of the Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group, he oversaw research and conservation efforts to save lemurs in Madagascar’s eastern lowland rain forests. Dr. Miller has also worked in the Galapagos Islands, and taught veterinary courses in Brazil, China, France, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. As first Director of the Saint Louis Zoo’s WildCare Institute he helped established cooperative agreements with over 180 zoos, universities, botanical gardens, and governmental and nongovernmental agencies that collaborate with its 13 focused Conservation Centers and additional programs. He was an advocate for conservation

medicine, and an Institute was added that focuses on the importance of epidemiology in wildlife and human diseases.

At present, there is only one definitive English language book on zoo and wildlife medicine, “Fowler’s Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine.” It is a leading textbook on wildlife medicine used in veterinary medical education programs around the globe. He was a CoEditor (4 editions) and Editor (the last 2). Miller’s international reputation has resulted in some unique assignments. When the Tbilisi Zoo, in the Republic of Georgia, was f looded, the Zoo lost half of their animals along with three keepers, Dr. Miller was the first outside veterinarian on the scene. Miller has also worked to develop a true partnership between European and North American zoo veterinarians. After twenty years of effort, those two regions now share support of the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, and have held two joint meetings.

James B. Eads Award

Henry Erk, D.Sc.

Senior Fellow, MEMC LLC Moore’s Law outlines the advancements required of semiconductors to enable each successive generation of computers, smartphones, etc. The technological innovations required to meet and sustain this remarkable progression is familiar only to those in the industry. The absolute of Moore’s Law is that in order for silicon chips to have more functionality, each generation requires more transistors that are smaller and with speeds faster than previous generations. This, in turn, drives the need for continuously f latter, smoother and cleaner silicon substrates and Henry Erk has been a leader in this field.

Production of silicon wafers requires sophisticated slicing, lapping, etching, polishing and cleaning processes to produce substrates that are dimensionally f lat across the wafer to within 5um (equivalent to making a football field f lat to within less

than 2mm) and smooth to within a nanometer peak to valley on the surface of the wafer and clean to a level where impurities are measured in a few atoms. Erk has devoted 30 years to developing and advancing closed systems in slicing, lapping, etching and polishing.

Chip makers require ever more stringent specifications at ever decreasing cost and Erk ’s research results have been key enablers to provide such substrates. His innovations include acid etching with control of hydrodynamics in the reactor to preserve f latness, caustic etching for improved f latness with chelating agents to preserve cleanliness, and later development of a DoubleSided Polishing process using non-metallic components and chelating agents to reduce metal contamination combined with the superior f latness produced by caustic etching.

James B. Eads Award

Michael Graham, Ph.D. Head of Plant Breeding Bayer - Crop Science Division

Dr. Graham’s research advances innovation in agriculture to help meet the demands of a growing global population in an increasingly sustainable way. Through advances in molecular marker technologies, data science, and the development of novel engineering solutions, Dr. Graham and his team have increased global crop production and improved farmer experiences around the world. As a third-generation plant scientist, Dr. Graham is motivated by the application of new technologies that enhance and accelerate the development of improved agricultural products. He leads a global organization that encompasses researchers in St. Louis and around the world as they develop

the next generation of products for growers in Africa, Europe, South America, Asia, and North America.

His team’s work has led to the most innovative product development and deployment organization in the industry. Dr. Graham has been instrumental in the career development of hundreds of scientists and is also very active in collaboration with many universities. For example, he was highly instrumental in establishing operations at the University of Illinois Research Park, collaborating with their research and educational programs. His efforts cultivate the next generation of students as they prepare for their careers in agricultural sciences.

Fellows Award

Adrian Michael Di Bisceglie, M.D.

Professor, Chief of Hepatology, Co-Director Saint Louis University Liver Center and Badeeh A. and Catherine V. Bander Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine, Saint Louis University School of Medicine Di Bisceglie has been a driving force in research on viral hepatitis since 1983 and was a member, in South Africa, of the first team to use recombinant alpha interferon to treat Hepatitis B. At the NIH, he worked with Dr. Jay Hoofnagle, who developed alpha interferon as a therapy for chronic Hepatitis C. Dr. Di Bisceglie was the first to test ribavirin as therapy for chronic Hepatitis C. He continued his research at Saint Louis University, where his laboratory has been funded to study various aspects of Hepatitis C virology. He is currently site principal investigator for the Hepatitis B Research Network, an NIH-funded network studying the natural history and treatment of chronic Hepatitis B infection.

Dr. Di Bisceglie has worked with several international organizations related to liver disease, hepatitis and liver cancer, including European

Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer and the International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease. He has served as a member of the US Hepatitis Panel for the US-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program. He has served as an ad hoc member of multiple study sections for the National Institutes of Health and has served on many other NIH Committees. In 2014, he served as President of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. He has been an ad hoc grant reviewer for several granting agencies including the NIDDK, the NIAID, the NIAA, and the AACGG. He is currently either principal investigator or co-investigator on eight different NIH or foundation awards. He has been a co-developer with Dr. Xiofeng Fan on six patents.

Fellows Award

Anne M. Fagan, Ph.D.

Professor of Neurology Washington University School of Medicine

Dr. Fagan is a national and international expert on f luid biomarkers of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) with over 150 AD publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Together with colleagues at the Washington University School of Medicine Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center, she was instrumental in establishing visionary, longitudinal studies investigating proteins in cerebrospinal f luid as biomarkers of preclinical (before symptoms) AD pathology in elderly and at-risk middle-aged individuals. She has recently expanded her interests to include biomarkers of pathologies beyond AD plaques and tangles, including neuroinf lammation, neuronal injury and synaptic dysfunction, as well as potential blood-based biomarkers. She has established and oversees one of the largest repository of biof luids from cognitively normal and AD research participants in the US (including sporadic AD, those

with AD-causing gene mutations and individuals with Down Syndrome), and has been a major advocate for and long-time contributor to global biomarker standardization and validation efforts in order to harmonize research efforts and facilitate biomarker use in patient clinical settings. Samples are regularly requested from the repository by researchers around the world. Dr. Fagan has contributed to the development of a staging system for Alzheimer Disease sponsored by the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer’s Association and is a member of the Preclinical Alzheimer Disease Consortium, a multiinstitutional research group that is focused on developing tests that detect Alzheimer disease brain changes before onset of dementia.

In addition to her scientific leadership, she is well-known for being highly collaborative and her engagement in AD education and mentoring at all levels.

Trustees Award

James S. Miller, Ph.D.

Senior Vice President for Science and Conservation Missouri Botanical Garden Miller has undertaken field work for research in Central and South America, Africa and Madagascar, Central and South East Asia, the Caucass, the Caribbean and North America.

Dr. Miller has had a distinguished career as a leader and senior science administrator in two major international botanical institutions (Missouri Botanical Garden and the New York Botanical Garden) and as an active scientist particularly in the fields of plant taxonomy and systematics. He is a world authority on the genus Cordia (Boraginales) in which he discovered, described and published numerous new species.

His publications include over 200 research papers in plant systematics, economic botany, phytochemistry and conservation.

Miller has supervised students including Masters level, Ph.D.’s and post-doctoral studies.

Dr. Miller has played a leading role in the establishment of an international ‘Ecological Restoration Alliance for Botanic Gardens’ created in 2010 and coordinated by Botanical Garden Conservation International, to develop and guide the role of botanic gardens in restoring natural capital. He has also been a leading founding member of the Council of World Flora Online (WFO), a project led by the Missouri Botanical Garden to establish a Flora of the World online by 2020. Significant progress is on-going with over 200,000 plant descriptions on line to date. Dr. Miller undertook a particular role in helping to establish a new global system of Taxonomic Expert Networks (TENs) to provide expert guidance on determining the correct names and status of each plant included in the WFO.

Trustees Award

Douglas D. Randall, Ph.D. Professor, Emeritus University of Missouri

Randall has a highly distinguished career as a pioneering plant biochemist and an inf luential leader in the advancement of plant science. His research in photosynthetic carbon metabolism included groundbreaking contributions in the area of protein phosphorylation, and he was the first to demonstrate control of a plant enzyme (pyruvate dehydrogenase complex) by reversible phosphorylation. His leadership in this area extended to initiating and coordinating the “Plant Phosphorylation Working Group” of over 45 research teams around the world. Dr. Randall helped shape the nation’s scientific policy as a presidentially appointed member of the National Science Board for 12 years. During much of this time, he was the sole representative on the Board from the plant science community. He contributed extensively toward the

establishment in 1998 of the National Plant Genome Initiative as a coordinated national plant genome research program, served in multiple leadership capacities for the American Society of Plant Biologists. Randall has also had a major impact on the field as a result of his initiating, coordinating and leading the Plant Protein Phosphorylation Working Group for many years. This group, and the workshops that have been held annually, have facilitated progress in the field. Randall has provided similar leadership, but to the broader scientific community, as a result of organizing the University of Missouri’s Annual Interdisciplinary Plant Group Symposia. Randall was founder and director of the internationally recognized Interdisciplinary Plant Group at MU for 28 years.

Peter H. Raven Lifetime Achievement Award

Edward H. Coe, Jr., Ph.D. Professor Emeritus University of Missouri

Dr. Coe’s research led to numerous, fundamental insights into plant genetics, which have far reaching impacts on science and society. He made seminal discoveries of the genetic mechanism underlying paramutation of the B gene in maize.

Paramutation is the process by which one silenced copy of a gene can silence the other copy present in the cell’s nucleus. This research directly influenced the discovery of the field of epigenetics and the regulation of gene function by small RNAs. Further, Coe’s findings on B paramutation are now textbook examples taught in college-level genetics courses world-wide. This research has directly benefited farmers and producers in Missouri, as well as people all over the world by the yield improvements possible because of Dr. Coe’s research.

The research Coe conducted on anthocyanin biosynthetic

genes also contributed to our understanding of the basis of quantitative traits that are beneficial for plant breeding.

Coe made major discoveries of organellar inheritance (mitochondria and chloroplasts) that were far ahead of his time. He discovered several mutations causing lesions in the mitochondria or chloroplast, and researched how these affected plant growth and development. Coe served as the Editor of the Maize Genetics Cooperation Newsletter for 26 years. The MGC Newsletter was the mechanism by which maize scientists communicated unpublished observations and shared novel findings prior to publication. It was an incredibly important repository of discoveries, functioned as the major conduit of sharing of materials and informal information, and served as a hub that brought the maize genetics community together.

Science Leadership Award

Mark S. Wrighton, Ph.D.

Chancellor, Professor of Chemistry Washington University in St. Louis Through his leadership, Wrighton has worked to build opportunities for the development of science and scientists globally and for the betterment of the St. Louis region. University accomplishments during his 23year tenure include a more than two-fold increase in undergraduate applications, more than 300 endowed professorships, a redesigned Arts & Sciences curriculum, newly created programs in biomedical engineering, public health, and completion of more than 50 new buildings on both the Danforth and School of Medicine campuses. Perhaps nowhere else is Wrighton’s regional leadership more apparent than the School of Medicine. With 1,409 students, 9,785 employees, and 1.1 million outpatient visits, the School of Medicine is a central hub in the City of St. Louis. Dr. Wrighton’s part in the development of the

Siteman Cancer Center has changed the lives of many in the St. Louis community in ways beyond measure.

Dr. Wrighton has also been supportive in the creation of the McDonnell Genome Institute, Alzheimer’s research, imaging research, and innovative programs for our youngest and most vulnerable patients. Dr. Wrighton was one of the earliest and most important supporters of the Cortex Community and BioSTL. St. Louis has now developed a national reputation for scientific innovation in biotechnology development in the medical and health care related fields. Before Washington University, Wrighton earned his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology and served at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as Professor, Head of the Department of Chemistry, and Provost.
