MESSAGE from the... Hello Sunny CNH! Although the term feels like it's barely begun, our District has already been jam-packed with Circle K events this summer, like the Circle K International Convention (CKIx), Presidents' Retreat, July District Board Meeting, and many more that you'll read about in this newsletter! Summer was been such a productive season for us, and I'm eager to see what more we can do throughout this year. Before I go on any further, I'd like to quickly thank the District Communications & Marketing Committee for producing so many wonderful publications for CNH, including this newsletter. They put an immense amount of time and effort in all of their work for our members, and it's clear that they do it out of love for our District. I'm so proud of all of the work our Clubs and District Board have been putting in this summer, and I'm incredibly excited to see our efforts come to fruition in the Fall. We still have a long road ahead of us, so I urge you to remind yourself why you joined this organization in the first place. Rekindle that passion and love for Circle K that you first felt as a new member, and do your best to spread that feeling to others this Fall. We all have a tall task ahead of us, but there's no doubt in my mind that we will succeed.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR // Wayne Cheng, San Francisco State University

Hello hello CNH! My name is Erica Wei and I’m your 2019-2020 District Communications & Marketing Chair! It’s been quite some time since the last Sunburst, but I’m super excited for everyone to read this summer issue. My committee and I love hearing about all the fun things that’s been happening throughout the California-Nevada-Hawai’i District and how you all experienced it. The Sunburst is where the CNH Circle K story truly shines so I hope you’ll find that it’s filled with many of your memories and accomplishments. Thank you to all the individuals who took the time to share their stories and contribute to the 59th volume of The Sunburst. I look forward to hearing more of your stories in future editions and throughout the rest of the term! As always, stay sunny!

DISTRICT C&M CHAIR // Erica Wei, University of California, San Diego

Hi Hello Sunny CNH! My name is Joshua Ranario and I am excited to serve as your 19-20 Publications Editor! As a small introduction, I am a 4th year Pre-Pharmacy/Biological Science major at the University of the Pacific. When I’m not at a CKI event, I love spending time and traveling with friends, practicing photography, and making new memories! As you will see through this first issue, clubs throughout CNH have done more than the extraordinary! I strongly encourage you all to make this a year to remember! Branch out, meet new people, and take initiative! I guarantee that you will be surprised at the outcome. Thanks for reading the first issue of the Sunburst, I’ll see you when I see you!

PUBLICATIONS EDITOR // Joshua Ranario, University of the Pacific

Hey there CNH! ٩( ᐛ )‫ و‬My name is Jennifer Sandoval, and I have the honor of serving as your District Secretary for the 2019-2020 term! I'm an incoming 4th year at Sacramento State University, and I'm majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Management Information Systems. In my position, I work with Club Secretaries, update District Files (like the CERF!), chair the District Laws & Regulations Committee, and more! This year I'm really looking forward to serving with the lovely Secretaries & District Board as we all work together to make this year an amazing one! I can't wait to meet all of our new members that y'all will be recruiting in the fall, and I hope to be a useful, welcoming resource for everyone :) Most of my goals for this term involve communication, support, and internal improvements. I hope that together, we'll all be able to work harder and accomplish what we've set out to!

On a more personal note, some fun facts about me include that I like to read license plates, watch ASMR mukbangs, read manga, and use this emoticon (:3 」∠)
(I relate to it on a very deep level HAHAH). Recently, I've been really addicted to phone games, so if you have any to recommend to me, feel free to hit me up!~

I wish you all the best of luck this term; take care and remember to take breaks when you need it!

DISTRICT SECRETARY // Jennifer Sandoval, Sacramento State University

Hullo Sunny CNH!!! My name is Kevin Ru and I am incredible humbled to serve you this term as your District Treasurer. I’m an upcoming 3rd year at UCLA studying Biology and a fun fact about me is that I love working with kids and give campus tours to elementary and middle school kiddos!

My main goal for this term is to really be a resource for you all, so please feel free to reach out and message me if you have questions about anything! Also, if you ever see me around, don't be afraid to say hi (people say I look scary at first but I promise I'm not !!!) I can't wait to meet a lot of you and see all the incredible things that you and your clubs will be doing!

Let's get that bread for our District Fundraising Initiatives (DFIs) and have an incredible year together as we strengthen our bonds and make a difference in the community WOWOW! DISTRICT TREASURER // Kevin Ru, University of California, Los Angeles

My name is Racheal Fairley and I am your International Trustee! I am from the Alabama District attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I have been in the Kiwanis family for 8 years now.

As your International Trustee, I will serve as an advocate for the members of the districts I am over as well as offer advice when needed. I will communicate important news and offer educational training for those who wish to learn more about our great organization. In my free time I love to take a hike or a good run, attend game nights with friends, watch good movies with movie theater popcorn, and, of course, I love anything Circle K!

What I love most about CKI is the fact that we can make a difference in the world and have fun in service at the same time. A weird fact about me is that I don’t like chocolate, fudge, or caramel, but I can eat my weight in strawberry ice cream. I cannot wait to grow in service with CNH this year!

INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE // Racheal Fairley, University of Alabama

DISTRICT

CONVENTION JENNIFER HOANG (CSU Fullerton)
College is really about the friends you make along the way, and District Convention (DCON) is one of the best places for CNH Circle K members to meet new people and develop lasting connections. DCON has always been my favorite CKI event and it was a real honor and pleasure to have the opportunity to plan the event, along with the DCON committee. The process of planning the convention with the committee was a long one and everyone put in 200% of their best effort. This made it even more special when attendees would speak to me about how much fun they had at DCON and it would really make my weekend. Finally, the immediate past district board also put in so much work during DCON and also deserve words of gratitude. Thank you DCON 2019 for allowing me to end my time in CKI with a bang and I hope you all continue to hold DCON in a special place in your hearts.

NORA LOVELL (University of CA, Davis)
I had the honor of getting to serve on the 2018-2019 District Convention Committee as the Workshops CoChair! District Convention 2019: Farm Fresh Service was a great event full of professional development, workshops, awards, and more! DCON is one of those events that always sticks with me because of all of the amazing people I get to see from all over the district and the memories that we make together. Being on the committee is such a different experience because you get to see everything that goes on behind the scenes and have an opportunity to put together something truly amazing for the members of CNH. I hope you all were able to love the event as much as I did, I can’t wait to see y’all at DCON 2020 (March 27-29, 2020)!

I had the great opportunity to attend CKIx this year with help from my sponsoring Kiwanis club, and I am so grateful. Before I even arrived in Orlando, I made some friends from Southwest District on my flight. The first day of CKIx was pretty chill. We started the evening with opening session and team activities, where I met even more people from all over the world, including some hipster peeps from PNW District. Team activities were a lot of fun too as I got to bond with my teammates and get to make new friends. The second day was the Day of Service, where I got to volunteer with Clean the World, an organization that takes leftover soaps and shampoos from hotels and recycles them into new products.

We also got to attend the Kiwanis Convention, and hear about some awe-inspiring Kiwanis projects. By far one of my most favorite experiences at CKIx was awards night, not just because I received the Distinguished Lieutenant Governor Award, but also because I got to see my fellow District Board members’ hard work be recognized as well. Oh also, Disney World was pretty fun, especially watching the fireworks from Thunder Mountain while being drenched by a downpour.

From July 19 - 21, 70 Circle K members drove to Lake Isabella for the annual CNH Presidents’ Retreat (PR)! This was my 3rd PR and this round I was planning the event. Earlier in April, I was appointed by our Governor, Wayne, to plan and execute Presidents’ Retreat. I had applied to lead PR because when I was a president during the 2017-2018 term, I found great support amongst the other CNH presidents and district board members, so I wanted to foster a community and set the tone for a great term, even if I wasn’t going to be an active part of it! My PR Team consisted of 5 people - Katelyn Duch (CSULB), Josephine Chau (CSUF), Ryan Hoang (OCC), David Su (Cypress) and Wayne Cheng (SFSU) + our awesome advisors Peter Yu and Robert Chirk! During the months between April and July, we worked on graphics, budgets, food, activities, transportation, teams, workshops and overall logistics of the event. During the event, the District Board did a great job of volunteering and helping us ensure that the event ran smoothly and that the presidents would take something meaningful back to their home clubs and divisions. One of my favorite activities the presidents took part in was called “Breaking Boards”, in which the presidents wrote their fears on karate boards and broke them as a physical manifestation of overcoming their fears! Planning this event and seeing the future of this district was the best way to send off my Circle K journey and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to have done it with my team!

Service RECAP “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. - Mahatma Gandhi

Sacramento State’s Sixth Small Scale Summer Service Social is an annual event where it’s three straight days full of service and socials! On Monday, we helped pack backpacks with Operation Backpack and then had a Flower Work Party. On Tuesday, we helped at the Kiwanis Family House, then headed to school for a Perler Bead Work Party, and ended the day with Soup Kitchen. During Soup Kitchen we served over 500 plates of food to the homeless. On Wednesday, we helped mulch trees at a local park then had another Flower Work Party. We ended S8 with a Poke fundraiser at Jimmy’s Poke.

Throughout those three days we went from packing backpacks to pulling weeds to mulching trees, it may have been some hard work, but we all had a lot of fun doing service together. We also had a lot of people come out, we had over 200 service hours and over 100 fellowship hours! This event was a great success and not only did the members have fun, we were also able to serve our community.

Fresno State Circle K had the opportunity to assist Camp Keola prepare their campsite for the kids this summer!

We volunteered by raking up the pine needles around the cabins and trails to prevent forest fires.

We are very thankful for Vice President of Service, Parker for arranging this 2 day service project for us! This camp is near and dear to his heart so it was an honor to help them all! They were very grateful because they are opening it up this Monday!

On May 3rd, UCLA Circle K members took up their gloves and trash bags to clean the beach of Santa Monica. Meeting up at 2 PM, five volunteers, myself included, walked to the 7/11 in Westwood to take a Big Blue Bus to 3rd Street Promenade… … From 3 PM to 6 PM, we walked alongside the beach, picking up any trash we could find. Once we got to the beach, we separated the trash we collected into a landfill bag and a recycling bag. Thankfully, there was less trash than we expected, which we optimistically took as a sign that people were cleaning up after themselves. While picking up what little trash we could find in the sand, we came across someone’s high school ID card and subsequently gave it to the lifeguard. Although the beach was beautiful and the weather was perfect, my favorite part of the event was getting to know everyone else on the bus ride to Santa Monica. The beach cleanup was my first service event in Circle K and it was overall a great experience. I bonded with some really friendly volunteers and got to enjoy the warm sun and cool water while also making the environment cleaner. As a result, I look forward to volunteering for service events in the future.

of Riverside gather to make a delicious meal for the homeless and needy. Circle K at UCR volunteers every week to help prepare food and serve drinks.

My favorite part of volunteering at the soup kitchen is the opportunity for me to interact with the people I’m serving. People are more than happy to share their stories and I had the privilege of hearing more than a few of them. Overall, soup kitchen is a great service because I get to see the effects of my volunteering immediately.

Music at Sky Park is a thrice annual free concert put on by our Kiwanians that funds the music program at the local high school. In it's 11th year, the first concert of the season was July 28th.

We help fund-raise by selling food made by local restaurants and running a 50/50 drawing where we keep half the money and a lucky winner gets the other half. This 50/50 made $1,075 for the music program and a lucky winner walked away with the same amount!

At Butterfly Restoration, we went to Golden Gate Park and cleared an area of the park of invasive plant species. We learned a lot of facts about the plants in that area, including whether the plants are native species or not, if they are edible, and which plants to steer away from. There were many different kinds of invasive species we needed to clear out and because of the hard work all the volunteers put in, we were able to clear most of them in the time we had.

This event is such a great event because of all the knowledge I gained from the coordinator and while volunteering. Instead of only telling us which plants to pull out, the coordinator told us what the invasive plants do to the native ones. He was very helpful to all of the volunteers there by answering all of the questions we had. Along with Circle K volunteers, the other volunteers were all different ages, including children and elders. It’s amazing to know that a diverse community is coming together to help beautify the park and help the native plants continue to grow and prosper.

The Kiwanis of Laguna Hills hosted a Hawaiian Luau on July 30th to raise funds for their community foundation, supporting local food banks, student scholarships, PTP dolls, and more. The event required volunteers to help set up raffle, blind auction, serve food, and cleanup.

There, the Circle K clubs from Saddleback, IVC, and CSUF, helped run the event smoothly. Volunteers helped set up, help out during the event, and clean up afterwards while assisting members from the Laguna Hills Kiwanis with any special needs. With all the help from the Circle K clubs, the Luau continued successfully as planned.

One of the many amazing organizations that dedicate themselves to helping the Bay Area community is South Bay Clean Creeks Coalition (SBCCC). To sum up what they do, they’re essentially a group of community leaders and activists who dedicate their time towards keeping our watershed clean and healthy. They frequently organize creek cleanups, where they invite members of the community, ranging from high school and college students to community leaders to pick up trash from local rivers and creeks. Three of my members and I attended one of these clean ups at Guadalupe River in San Jose on May 11th. The organizers provided the volunteers with trash grabbers, gloves, and large trash bags. This was one of the first service events that we had for the 2019-2020 term which included 2 new members. We began picking up trash around the dried up part of the river. Within just 30 minutes and around a 50 foot distance, about half of a 40 gallon bag was filled with trash. We were all amazed and saddened by the amount and type of trash we found along the river. A large amount of the trash we found was small pieces of plastic that was extremely difficult to pick up. We also found multiple huge, full black trash bags that were buried deep under the dirt and rocks that lined the river. One of our members, Divya actually found a huge old rusty dishwasher that he dug up with some of the other volunteers and helped extract from the river. We all realized that the issue of littering and pollution in our rivers and creeks is way worse than most people would think. Since then we have had multiple services with them and plan to do many more in the near future so that we can help our community keep an integral part of our livelihood clean and safe for a long time.

TRI-DCM: CITRUS, FOOTHILL, & METRO

Writer: Matthew Ujemov (Metro)

EL CAMINO COLLEGE

We wrote appreciative letters to Kiwanians for all of their love and support and we made handbags and dog toys out of old t-shirts! After splitting into our separate divisions for our own DCM’s we played games that included making team cheers with the name of all three divisions, racing against another team to see who can fill a bucket the fastest with 3 small sponges, team jeopardy in which every person could only write one letter, and pictionary with twists. The pictionary was the game that stood out the most to me because there were items that you could purchase as a team to sabotage another team. I personally got stuck with having to use tiny legos to somehow make Google Drive. The DCM was fun and I hope that we do it again!

I especially enjoyed the tabletop service where we were sewing dolls for children because of how my group split up tasks and worked together to make it. Some unforgettable moments were made during the outside activities where we were grouped with people from each division and came up with cheers. I absolutely adored the team that used face masks in their cheer! My team ended up having too many people for the one game where two teams competed to see who could fill up their bucket the most using only sponges being passed to each person in a line, but I had so much cheering them on. The last activity playing Jeopardy was a great end to the day because it tied everything together and gave me a better understanding of each division and Circle K, along with some random animal facts. I hope to see more divisions coming together like this and I am excited to see what each has in store for this year.

Hello! I’m Louise Panaligan and I am Pasadena City College’s Go West Chair. I’m so grateful for the Tri-DCM because it really opened me up to bonding with new people from Citrus, Metro, and even in my own division. Writing letters for the Kiwanians and learning new names and faces was a great start of that day. Giving back to the Kiwanians and the feeling of being with so many people who feel the same about service brought me back to reasons why I joined Circle K.

On July 7th, the Citrus, Foothill, and Metro divisions hosted a Tri-dcm at Cal State Long Beach. The CitrusMetro-Foothill Tri-DCM was one of the best events that I have been to. I was able to network and connect with people not only from my own division (Metro), but with people from the Foothill and Citrus divisions! They split us up into three random groups.

Moorpark College held a tabling at new student orientation to promote CKI and member recruitment.
We ran some games for the students to get to know
each other and provide more informations about
what CKI means and does. It was a great opportunity
to promote our club and spread the word of this
 amazing organization.

Glad that we are getting ready for the fall with this incredible event and can’t wait to meet more of our

The Desert Oasis Division Leadership Team decided to dedicate the month of July to raise awareness and funds for the Trevor Project. So, on July 24, the DLT hosted a Trevor Project Webinar as part of the Trevor Project Month.

The purpose of this webinar was to educate the members about what the Trevor Project stands for and how they can help support it through volunteering or through donations. Topics such as the history of the Trevor Project and what kinds of resources the Trevor Project provides for the LGBTQ+ youth community were discussed. The webinar also went over how members can take direct action to help support the Trevor Project as well as inform them about where the donations directly go in to. Since the Trevor Project is the new DFI for this term, I believe that educating members through webinars or infographics is a great start to getting them engaged and to raise awareness.

The Golden Gate x Sunset Joint June DCM was an event. What kind of event? It was laborious, rewarding, refreshing, informational, and fun!

We started the event by the beach, eradicating it of those potato wedge-like weeds. With the help of our two divisions, we completely cleared our section within a few hours of our Divisional Service Project. Following that, we had a good old fashioned Costco Pizza Party overlooking a beach before having a series of competitions. While waiting to digest a bit, the Lieutenant Governors of our respective divisions held a straightforward and concise Division Council Meeting independently and consecutively.

The competitions brought us together, making new friends all around and new memories to last (if they don’t, we took pictures too). All in all, I would want to go again!

DE ANZA COLLEGE

On a lovely Saturday morning, Golden Gate Circle K members joined forces with Sunset Circle K members to do some fun service at Half Moon Bay. We started the day by plucking out invasive weeds along the beach. After putting on our gloves and sunscreen, we poured our energy into extracting the weed. Some of the weeds were very stubborn, so two of us would work together to snatch the weed out. We ended up filling up more than 15 bags of invasive plants! Soon after, we headed towards another beach that was more suitable for fun beach bonding activities. Each division held separated Divisional Council Meetings but gathered back together to play team games, such as tug of war and relay races. Even though the sun was piercing into our skins, it was still very fun to bond with people from other schools and divisions! The teams were randomized, so we all had an opportunity to make at least one new friend that day. Every team made their cheers and perform it to the rest of the group. It was nice hearing the cheers and making new friends throughout the day. 11/10 would highly recommend.

IMPACT TEAM: TEAM PAWS

What I loved most about co-leading Team Paws was that growth. In the name of cute dogs, we used our ten weeks to host a fun mix of educational, service, and fundraising events. For some of my team members, tabling was new, and it was awesome seeing them put themselves out there! For others, the team setting pushed them. I love my team, and it’s so incredible seeing how much they’ve grown from then and now.

Dedicated to raising awareness of pet ownership, Team Paws was able to create a successful team environment where individuals started off as strangers who loved animals, and ended as a family that changed the world for the animals we helped.
No notion was too small for my team. Weekly tabletop services where we made ten small dog toys, evolved into a total of 100 dog toys to be donated to our local humane society. Small events here and there promoted strong education of raising and caring for pets. Ten weeks of dedication resulted in motivated, passionate individuals who were able to make an impact into the bettering of the world.

I'm so proud of my team and I hope we can inspire for more meaningful impact throughout CNH.

Whether in Circle K or not, I’ve seen them chase their own passions with an energy that inspires you to, and I’m so proud of what we did and where we are.

During my first year as a member of Circle K, I have gained a lot through the family system. I’ve been able to meet amazing people that have made a lasting impact on me. Whether it was spending a night “studying” or failing to follow a Bob Ross painting video or eating my share of KBBQ, I enjoyed every minute that I spent with my wonderful family. I honestly never thought I would meet a group of people that would be so caring and understanding. These are people who deal with me for the clumsy mess I am and listen to me vent about my issues without a single complaint. As a family head for the upcoming year, I expect that I will build even stronger bonds with all my family members and make even more meaningful memories. As a family head, it is my job to create an environment that fosters the development of such bonds and memories like my family heads did for me. For me, the time I spent with my family really brought me out of my comfort zone. I am a typically shy, introverted person who does not do well in larger group settings, but being placed in a family pushed me to interact with other members more. Joining a club, meeting new people, and finding a place of belonging is hard, but I want to be there, as a family head, to help get my cubbies through that. My Circle K family has helped me grow a lot as a person, and I want to be able to do that for others.

San Jose State University hosted a pool party for their end of the year celebration to look back at all the memories of the past year. Members from both within San Jose State and other clubs within Sunset Division came out to support. Some even brought their friends outside of the club!

It was a great way to destress from finals week with games, fellowship activities, and recognition. The previous and future officers recognized various members for their achievements through superlatives, officers awards, and different levels of recognition.

Tri-Fam is a yearly event Sacramento State CKI hosts that gets all our club’s families to come together! Unlike other school’s family systems, our’s is unique in that once you are sorted in a family you are in it for life! The families: Hornets, Squirrels, and Turkeys, never change unless it’s to add new additions to the family every Fall and Spring semester! Normally, we would host this event in the Fall, however for this year we wanted to try something new and host a SUMMER Tri-Fam as well! On the same day, each family head was responsible for planning their own family’s social. One family had a pizza party, another was a potluck, and the last one was a family BBQ! Then at the end of each family social, we all come together at an ending meet up point! For this one, it was at Country Club Lanes where everyone played bowling together!

Another new idea we had during Tri-Fam was to introduce a set of challenges to do with your family during the event! One in particular was to create a music video with your entire family! I want to give a special shout out to the Family Heads: Car Persons (Hornets), Elijah Camtugan (Squirrels), and Izaiah Johnson (Turkeys) for taking the risk and trying something new in our club! All attendees had an amazing time and the experience will definitely help us when we need to start planning for Fall Tri-Fam!

My aunt and uncle had a crawfish boil on Memorial Day Weekend which proved to be the perfect opportunity for a board get-together.

It was PCC's first board retreat in many years! Shoutout to my Member Development and Education Chair, Ana Valdez, for planning it with me! We decided to drift away from the city, and go to Big Bear. Ana and I had some activities set aside to break the little ice, and enhance our leadership skills. Such activities included workshops and a game called "the line game," which is actually popular activity for most board retreats in Circle K. We explored around Big Bear and actually had Executive and Appointed Board switch off cooking for everyone. There were many more activities but what happens at retreat, stays at retreat...am I right?! It wasn't always a professional time for this retreat though. I believe for a team to truly work well together, and become a family, we should get to know one another outside of our usual Circle K environment. *Wink wink* To end it all off, we had a simp session! Through this retreat, I personally am happy I was able to learn even more about my kiddos, as they stepped out of their comfort zone, and truly create a unspeakable bond between us. I love you all!

Believe it or not, the Taco y Taco and Brew Tea Bar social was originally a KBBQ social, but I quickly realized that $25 KBBQ wasn’t the best choice for our college budgets. In order to ensure that more people could come, I changed the social location to Taco y Taco where they make the best gourmet tacos for only $2! I realized I had made a great choice when more people said they could come, and I was even more delighted to learn that most of us had never been to Taco y Taco before. I was glad to be introducing them to such an amazing place. The tacos were of course delicious, especially the al pastor tacos, my personal favorite. We continued our social at Brew Tea Bar which was conveniently right next door to Taco y Taco, and shoutout to Rendell and Daniel for buying everybody strawberry milk tea! Even with all the great food to occupy us, we spent a good 2-3 hours talking and sharing stories about our summers and our wonderful experiences with Circle K. A huge thank you to Janelle, Philipp, Rendell, Daniel, Vanessa Vidas, Vanessa Meza-Perez, Ethan, and Josef for coming! It was great seeing new friends being made through laughter and good food. Message from the Lt. Governor Hello Golden Gate!!! My name is Darian Sein-Lwin, and I will be serving as your Lieutenant Governor for the 2019-2020 CKI term. I'm currently a 3rd year attending CSU East Bay, and if we haven't met yet, I look forward to meeting you at some Golden Gate Divisional Council Meetings (DCM) or maybe even at your home club’s events! I can't wait to spend the next year supporting you in your growth as leaders and in your CKI journey! - Darian Sein-Lwin

QUARTERLY HIGHLIGHT I had the greatest experience during Golden Gate’s joint June DSP/DCM with Sunset Division--the event was definitely the epitome of CKI’s 3 tenants. The day started off with a morning full of service with fellow CKI members from both the Golden Gate and Sunset Division. We worked together to pull out icebox plants from the beach to make the area look more beautiful. We pulled out a numerous amount of icebox plants and placed them in garbage bags to have them be disposed carefully instead of leaving the plants around the beach.

Fast forwarding to the social portion of the event, both divisions collided and participated in many relay activities--where most of the fun and laughter had came from. My favorite relay game that everyone participated in was the wheelbarrow race because everyone was frantically trying to cross the finish line as quickly as they could, with some members going face down into the warm sand. To wrap up the entire event, we ended up taking photos that would allow us to relive the very moments created at the beach. Never will I ever forget this wonderful experience of beautifying a beach and most importantly, having some fun in the sun with the coolest people I have ever met.

Metro Division

Message from the Lt. Governor Beep Beep! Here comes that Big Blue Bus! My name is Eddie Castillo and I have the great privilege of serving as your Metro Lieutenant Governor for this term. I have attended CSULB for four years and will be transferring to UCLA for the fall quarter. Metro has been my home during my college journey and I can’t wait to be a part of it again this year. Our division stretches from the top of Northridge to the edge of LA in Long Beach only being split by the traffic of I-5 freeway. Although there is some distance between our schools, Metro’s passion can be heard across California, Nevada, and Hawaii! Look out for those Metro Monsters at any service event! - Eddie Castillo

Gathering under the cloudy, late-June sky, our Kiwanis family and Metro buddies got down and dirty with shovels and saplings in hand. At 9:00 AM, the Kiwanis Club of Long Beach had their popcorn stand ready to support the local Key Clubs and Circle K schools across Metro as we got to work. Throughout the day, we labored with our gloves and laughter to improve the neighborhoods of Long Beach by planting trees. It was such a pleasant surprise to see friends from other Metro schools at one of our recurring events when L.A. traffic and distance usually separates us. It made me realize how tightly-knit and willing our division is to overcome obstacles just to hang out for a few hours. With the weather on our side, we finished swiftly and decided to fill our bellies with pho.

This summer we had several service events around San Diego, one of them being Mud Day in Pacific Beach! We began by helping families construct tents using bamboo sticks, cloth, and string. Later, the mud festivities really began with a mud obstacle course, and anything-goes mudpit, mud sling-shot archery, and mud kitchen. One of our volunteers, Peter Abanto, explained the highlight of his day working the mud kitchen, "just seeing all these kids use their endless imagination to turn mud and kitchen utensils into a joyous time with friends and family made my day. Watching people of all ages from toddlers to even older adults enjoying the other stations, getting down and dirty in the mud kept a smile on my face all throughout the event". Our last assignment was to clean up the mess attendees had made - on themselves! There were no real showers, so we hosed down each individual. We ended the day tired and covered in mud, but thankful we were able to support an event that brought families and friends closer together.

Message from the Lt. Governor Hello Sharkies! My name is Jonash Poyaoan and I am proud to be serving as your Sunset Lieutenant Governor for the 2019-2020 term! Words cannot describe how lucky and excited I am to be representing such an amazing division filled with diversity, love, and passionate folks who have such a strong drive for service and making an impact in our tight-knit community! Some fun facts about me is that I have a burning passion for backpacks where I collect the same backpack but in different colors and snakes are my favorite animals! WOWZAS! So Exciting! Being able to represent this division, I can’t wait to strengthen our bonds not only within the general members but the board members as well since they will be the main influencers of their respective clubs. There is so much in store for this division and I can’t wait to see the growth in service hours, friendships, and the memories the we get to make along this narrative of ours! If you ever need anything, I will be here 24/7 like 7 Eleven! Thank you friendos and let’s dive into the best term yet! - Jonash Poyaoan
