2022 Concrete Pavement Workshop Series The Southwest Concrete Pavement Association presents:
Paving with Portland Limestone Cement Now in the Mix in California’s First PLC Pavement Project Thursday, October 13th from 9:00 am to 10:15 am Pacific Time Brought to you through the support of:
Portland Limestone Cement (PLC), aka Type 1L cement, is a type of blended cement that contains between up to 15% ground limestone. Replacing some of the clinker in the cement with ground limestone results in a roughly 10% reduction in its carbon footprint. And not only is PLC more sustainable, it performs exceptionally well as a one-to-one replacement for traditional cement in paving mixes. In January this year, Caltrans approved the use of PLC, and the first concrete paving project to use PLC is the Highway 101: Santa Barbara to Mussel Shoals Project that Granite Construction is currently building. Nevada DOT has also changed their specifications to allow for the use of PLC. Following acceptance from the two states, regional cement manufacturing companies have been quick to transition their production efforts toward PLC. Join us on Thursday, October 13th at 9 am to learn about the sustainable aspects of PLC, how it was approved by Caltrans, and how it’s performing in its first California concrete pavement project. Our panelists are Tom Van Dam, Ph.D., P.E., FACI, LEED AP, Principal at NCE; Nathan Forrest, P.E., ENV SP, Technical Director at CNCA; and Jon Hamilton, Construction Manager, Concrete Paving at Granite Construction.
