BEST SALES INCREASE

OF A SPECIAL SECTION: FINALS ISSUE

As a newspaper that generates less than $3,000 on average per issue, we rely heavily on our special sections to generate more revenue for our operations. In the current economy we rely on them even more. We spent the Spring 2012 semester really focusing on special issues and pages to make up as much revenue as we could to try to mitigate the losses. Our best performance came with our Finals Issue special edition.

FINalS WEEk Friday, April 27, 2012

T N E G UR

The Finals Issue is a product we have been working on over the last three years to take hold in our area. It has been a work in progress. This year we focused on two areas: spec ads and sales education. In mid-March, we reviewed with the sales staff the previous years’ issues, showed them successful Finals Issues from other campus papers, and gave examples of ideas where they could grow their customers. The sales managers reviewed each sales representative’s account lists and helped them create a target account list. From that list each representative was required to create 5 spec ads for presentation. The sales managers also role played the sales pitch with the sales represenative. The extra time in development, and better preparation in idea generation and sales education paid off extremely well for us. The section increased from $6,496.13 in 2011 to $10,341.56 in 2012. A 59% increase in revenue.

It’s the

Final Week! Central Michigan Life’s finals issue

of the spring semester will feature articles about the last week of classes, end of semester and graduation.

This is a great opportunity to wish our Graduates luck,

thank them for supporting your business, serving as an employee, or just letting them and their families know about your graduation specials.

This section will include tips for exam week stress, including things to do on campus and in the community. It will also be filled with mind exercises such as sudoku, word search and crossword puzzles.

Readers will also find information on things to do over summer break – CMU and Mt. Pleasant related.

This is a great way to increase your ad’s shelf life

as the paper will be on the rack all week – including Graduation day! A good issue to remind consumers about events and activities during the last week of classes, promote fun things to do to relieve the stress of finals – and offer “FREE” deliveries of your items!

Kent State 4d – Best Sales Increase of a Special Section

Renter’s Guide is our most profitable special section that we run in the Daily Kent Stater. The section used to bring in about $6,000-‐ $7,000 per semester. We have been fortunate to have a housing burst of new apartment complexes that have increased this amount over the past two years to roughly $7,500 -‐ $8,500. We had our best-‐selling Renter’s in fall of 2011 when sales reached $9,156.23. When the spring 2012 Renter’s rolled around, we grew concerned. Most of the new apartment complexes had spent their grand opening budget and most were over 75% to capacity. We brainstormed to what could be done to reach and then surpass our fall achievement. We set a goal of $10,000 and 1,000 inches for display ads in our Spring Renter’s Guide. We came up with several strategies to ensure that this edition made these goals. Challenges • Most of the new apartment complexes had spent their grand opening budgets • We maintained the same rates from the fall • The section usually contains the same list of clients from semester to semester • Many smaller clients are afraid they will be lost in the shuffle • The spring Renter’s Guide often ran too late for advertisers (We usually ran the section in late February • If we moved the date of the section up, we would have to start selling and promoting the section heavily with the start-‐up of school Our Strategy • Move the run date to late January to better prospect the clients that are in full renting swing • Place emphasis on placement to gain extra revenue in placement premiums • Utilize the section flier as a mass mailing to all clients • Utilize the section flier as a filler display ad • Utilize the section flier as an email blast to all clients • Meet with all large clients in person • Call on key classified clients that own numerous rentals to ensure that we are not too heavily reliant on large apartment complexes • Have the sales staff start back earlier that in past semesters for an early start to the section

Kent State 4d – Best Sales Increase of a Special Section

The Results Section Inches Revenue Fall Renter’s 2011 900 $9,156.23 Spring Renter’s 2012 1,065.50 $10,789.42 We saw an increase of 165.5” and a total of $1,633.19 more in revenue. This is equivalent to a 17% increase over the fall issue. Implementation of Strategies The best strategy used was to meet in person with our largest clients. Representatives tend to get comfortable in a routine of phone and email. We required all reps to meet in person. They took the previous edition, the advertising flier and in some cases spec ads. We saw that many of the large apartment complexes booked an additional placement request once they saw what their competitors were doing. We believe the second strategy that worked best was focusing on the local landlords in the area with multiple rentals. Although their influence on the bottom line was not as impactful as the strategy above, we found that we tapped a new client base that had not been discovered. Many of these clients continue to run today. Thirdly, we better utilized our promotional sales flier. We mass mailed, email blasted and used the flier as a filler for the weeks leading up to the edition. Overall, the spring 2012 edition of Renter’s Guide was the largest revenue we have ever achieved for Renter’s in the 84 years of the Daily Kent Stater. The rental properties were very pleased with the section and we had almost our entire circulation picked up for that day. The section started out the semester with a bang and the reps had never been so motivated.

Ka Leo Best Sales Increase Strategy Ka Leo would like to submit the increase in sales from 2011’s orientation guide with 2012’s orientation guide. (Manoa Manual) This special edition of the Ka Leo is put together in conjunction with the University of Hawaii New Student Orientation Program and is specifically used for their on campus orientations. The sales in 2011 were $10,393 and the sales in 2012 were $20,057 for an increase of 93% over the previous year. This was done with a bundled approach that utilized multiple products and services along with a bigger sales staff to call on more clients. The overall goal for this year’s orientation guide was $20,000 and the students were able to just make that goal as evident by the final sales number. We start the summer off, with a week long training session that gets our ad reps up to speed with what our goals and objectives are for the summer, and the orientation guide is a very large aspect of what we do. This last year was the first time that we had multiple students returning to the sales staff and we had more students that started in the spring on our staff than ever before. This was the first year that we were fully staffed and had every territory filled, which simply contributed to us being able to call on more clients and thus getting more businesses interested in being a part of our welcome package. We used lots of weekly incentives to push our ad reps to make sales for this year’s orientation guide as well. We ran a most calls in a week contest, most appointments in a week, most sales in a week, and biggest contract in a week to help keep our students excited about the opportunity to sell this special issue. Simply having more students competing against each other helped us build a sense of purpose in the office and kept them hungry for new sales and winning the competition that week. One of the incentives we use for our clients is tying this issue in with our welcome back issue, our coupon booklet and our on campus vendor fair at the beginning of the year. It is a multi buy option that clients could take advantage of to get to the students first. This helped create value with our clients who saw an opportunity to really set a presence with UH at the beginning of the year. This also allowed us to leverage long-‐term contracts by waiving certain cost if they would sign a 40+ time insertion contract. By utilizing the packages, which some clients took advantage of and the long-‐term deals we were able to create a lot of excitement with the local businesses. We also had a special gloss cover on this issue which we sold at a premium rate for the inside covers and back cover, which allowed us to build an additional $3,176 into the issue that had not previously been there. Another way that we were able to increase our sales was through the partnership with the University of Hawaii New Student Orientation program, which paid us $1,500 to put the guide together. This was the first year that they used our guide as the official program for the orientations and they saw fit to pay us to put information in the guide that they would like to get out to students. This additional revenue and added partnership only helped solidify the usefulness of our guide and also was key part of us putting on our vendor fair. With a seasoned staff and managers that had a clear understanding of goal setting and development of younger staff, we were able to incentivize our students and make this one of the most successful issues of our year.

Welcome Back

Bundle

Our Welcome Bundle is a package of four great ways to reach the UH community in fall 2012. The first component is our New Student Orientation guide that is passed out to all new incoming freshman and given to every student that lives in the dorms. Second, we have our Welcome Back Issue, which is on the stands for four days and distributed to 100 locations on campus. Back by popular demand is the Vendor Fair, held on 8/15/12 from 12-3 p.m., which is an opportunity for you to interact with students one on one. New to this package is a coupon book which is used as a fundraiser for student groups on campus. This not only helps you advertise, but it also helps student organizations fund their programs.

Orientation Guide For all incoming new students, freshmen and transfers, there are orientation sessions over the summer that help them better understand the University of Hawai‘i campus and facilities. As a part of welcoming students to campus, we provide them with information that they will need for their college lifestyle. Ka Leo works together with UH to provide the official New Student Orientation Guide that will be handed out to the students at all of the orientation sessions over the summer. This is a great opportunity to reach newbies first. The New Student Orientation Guide is a trusted resource that helps students better understand their new surroundings and community. It will help them adjust to campus life and understand where to go for their college life needs. This issue is also passed out to the students at the dorm and is a true reference to college, which is something students hang on to for a long time. Make sure you let UH students know how to find your business by advetising to them in the official New Students Orientation Guide,

Mustang Daily SOARs to New Highs in 2012 In August of 2011, the Mustang Daily published its first-ever SOAR (Summer Orientation, Advising and Registration) edition. SOAR is held each summer at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo over a period of 2-3 weeks and is for all incoming freshmen and their parents. We believed this would be a great opportunity to introduce the students and parents to the Mustang Daily and its advertisers. This was a completely new product, a major deviation from our normal broadsheet or tab publication. It was instead a smaller, magazine style, full color publication. One student ad designer designed the publication with copy coordinated by the special sections coordinator. The end result was a 32-page section with $8,190 in new revenue. While we were happy with the revenue, it was also quite clear that there was great potential in this product. The challenge was to come up with a marketing and incentive plan that would result in a targeted 50 percent increase or slightly more than $12,000 in total sales. So last spring, plans were started to market this product for the second year. Having a very successful 2011 edition -- one that was praised by campus officials and organizations and well received by advertisers -- was expected to make marketing to advertisers much easier. At the same time, the campus organization that administers the SOAR program was working to market those same businesses as sponsors and syphon off some of the potential advertising revenue. The dates for the SOAR program were moved up by almost a full month without any notification made to the Mustang Daily. Only by maintaining strong contacts on campus were we able to find out about the date changes. Facing a much earlier deadline, the Mustang Daily was forced to come up with a sales plan and really think outside of the box. The first task was to come up with a sales incentive plan that would encourage the sales staff to sign up advertisers before the end of the school year. That was accomplished with the “”Sales be SIZZLIN” contest. This contest not only incentivized the sales for end of year publications, Graduation and a new product, Puzzle Book, but also the SOAR edition. Thermometers were used to measure the amount of sales for all of the advertising account executives with incentives given for reaching sales goals in each category. Almost all sales reps exceeded their goals for SOAR. The Mustang Daily also reached out to the Cal Poly Parent Program and was able to include advertising space as part of the program’s sponsorship with various area hotels. Hotels in resort areas, such as Pismo Beach, near the campus, were able to buy annual sponsorship packages with the Parent Program, which would include an ad in the SOAR edition. That relationship accounted for more than $2,000 in advertising in 2012 and will be repeated for 2013. The end result, a whopping 106 percent increase in sales from 2011 to 2012. The total sales for the SOAR edition were $16,882.50. In one year, we increased from having 24 advertisers to 49, inches went up from 573 to 1115. Mustang Daily’s advertising staff is not satisfied though, our goal for 2013 -- another 100 percent increase.

Best Sales Increase of a Special Section Parents Survival Guide Niner Times • UNC Charlotte The goal every issue is to outsell the previous year’s issue and this year we not only outsold the Parents Survival Guide - we crushed last year’s number by more than 14.4%! I am proud to say we achieved this success though the efforts of a dedicated, hard working and persistent staff. The academic year was coming to a close and it would have been easy to let sales slip and focus only on summer’s quick approach. Thankfully, our account executives did not let that happen, but continued to press for sales and work diligently on surpassing the sales goal for the 2012 Survival Guide issue. One tool we used to stay on track was the sales checklist. With so much going on at the end of the semester, the checklists were vital in helping keep our reps on top of each sale. The checklists helped the reps gauge their progress with each client and had important objectives on it such as signature obtained, production request completed, and ad received. These checklists were also important for our marketing director and our advisor to keep track of what we still needed from each client. By using the checklists, my we were able to avoid hunting down ads or retrieving signatures once the account executives had left for the summer. Also, the checklists motivated the reps to sell more by serving as a reminder that they had a paycheck at stake. It was clear to the account executives that the objectives on the checklist had to be completed in order for them to earn commission the sales they made. We also got an early start on selling for the Parents Survival Guide this year. We usually start about a month before the end of the semester, but this year a few of the account executives took on the challenge a bit earlier and it paid off. The early start gave them time to make more sales and gave them ample time to collect all they necessary documentation required on the checklists. This allowed for a less stressful, more organized, and more successful workflow for our reps.

Parents Survival Guide Comparison 2011 to 2012 14.41% Increase $9,600.00 $9,344.00

$9,400.00

The continued persistence of the account executives through the last weeks of the school year was also a major contributing factor for the increase. They put in a lot of work selling the issue and making sure all of the items on their checklist were completed. Despite the fact summer break was just around the corner, the students never lost sight of the job at hand. They continued to follow up on leads, work with clients and the design team to ensure all the ads were up to the expected standards, and complete all the required paperwork for each sale. Due to their persistence the Parents Survival Guide went smoothly and successfully. The way we performed this year for our Parents Survival Guide, dramatically increasing sales from last year, is definitely a tribute to the hard work and determination put forth by the sales team. We certainly plan to expand on the trend of increasing our special section sales by implementing some of the procedures we used this year and by trying new methods. I have every confidence our team will continue to make it happen.

4d Best Sales Increase of a Special Section Undoubtedly the biggest sales increase of a Special Section we had this year was for our Visitors Guide to Fort Collins. We have been putting together a Visitors Guide for the past for the past 20 years and have had great success. What made this year so special is the fact that we were able to partner with the University to create a full color high gloss publication, which became our Visitors Guide to Colorado State University and Fort Collins. The span of our distribution increased due to the fact we partnered with the University, allowing us to distribute all throughout campus and off. It also allowed us to put Visitors Guides into each of the parent packets during Freshman Orientation.

The biggest sales strategy we used in selling the 2012 Visitors Guide was the

fact that we had partnered with the University (businesses love to hear that we are doing a project with the University since we are not technically affiliated). The other big selling strategy was the fact that it is a full color, high gloss publication, something new and much more appealing than last year’s which had not been high gloss. We also created a special Downtown page for the guide that gave Downtown advertisers a special rate and special page. This generated even more sales especially from businesses that had never advertised with us before.

Rates had gone up slightly from last year due to the printing quality but the

numbers had increased immensely due to the fact that interest from advertisers had gone up a lot. It speaks volumes that the rate increase did not affect past advertisers, as they were still willing to advertise as well as new advertisers who had never been

in the Guide before. In the end our 2011 Visitors Guide revenue was $15,815 and our 2012 Visitors Guide revenue was $23,760 and incredible $7,945 increase.

Best percentage of growth Welcome Back issue South Carolina

Our fall Welcome Back issue is the first issue of fall semester that is distributed on the Friday before Move-‐In day. Typically, this is our biggest moneymaker of the year and often will set the tone for the semester. We set a goal of $25,000 for our 2012 issue, which would have been a 9% increase over prior year. Our final revenue for the 2012 Welcome Back issue came in at $33,499, a 142% increase over prior year. In 2011 we brought in $23,590. Our 2012 revenue shattered all records, the closest being our 2006 numbers, which came to $27,220. Several key factors played into our success this year. o I had 5 dedicated staff members selling this issue vs. the 3 that I had in 2011. o My campus rep reached our to sororities and fraternities for this issue and had tremendous success. This tactic brought in 8 new accounts that generated $2860 in new revenue. o I had a new business competition that awarded a $100 bonus to the rep who brought in the most new business. There were stipulations in that they had to bring in 75% of returning clients to be eligible. This tactic brought in 47 new clients 2011 2522 column inches 63 clients/72 ads $23,590 in revenue 2012 3651 column inches 89 clients/106 ads $33,499 in revenue
