The local wine culture dates back to 1968, when the first commercial vineyards were planted by the Cilurzo family. They saw the region’s potential for viticulture and the production of world class wines. Thanks to well-draining soils and Mediterranean climate marked by cool, misty mornings and warm, dry afternoons and chilly nights, Temecula is well-suited to Italian, Spanish and French grape varietals. Among the more than two dozen varieties that thrive here are wine grapes like Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Tempranillo and Vermentino, along with well-known classics like Syrah, Viognier, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

Many wineries are family-run, boutique style operations, and it’s not uncommon to meet the winemakers or owners when visiting tasting rooms. Temecula wineries tend to produce a limited number of cases of each vintage, which means they prioritize selling directly to consumers at the wineries. The Pechanga band of Luiseño Native American Indians were our first residents. They ran their hands through the soil, met under the Great Oak and stood atop the rolling hills overlooking the valley, naming it Temecula, or “place of the sun.”

By 1947, the Vail Ranch included more than 87,000 acres.

Step Further Back in Time at Vail Headquarters Louis and Ramona Wolf, two of Temecula’s earliest pioneers, first established a trading post along the Temecula Creek in 1867. Following their deaths, Walter Vail bought their land and turned it into one of California’s largest cattle operations, growing to more than 87,00 acres by 1905. The site played such a prominent role in Temecula Valley’s history, the community rallied together to preserve and restore what remained of Vail Headquarters. Today, it’s a living historic park and a treasured local gathering place. Think of Vail Headquarters like Old Town’s little sister—it’s located just a short drive away along Temecula Parkway and unassumingly tucked adjacent to a shopping center. The retail, entertainment and dining complex comprised of historic buildings and replicated structures offers an attractive blend of boutique shopping, gourmet dining, artisan coffee, craft brews, creative workspaces and a robust event line-up. In 1964, the Vails announced the sale of their ranch to a consortium of developers that had plans for a master-planned community to be known as Rancho California. When the City of Temecula was incorporated in 1989, residents voted to retain the original Native American name of the village and railroad town site. Today, more than a dozen historical properties dating as far back as the late 1880s still exist and have been repurposed and reopened in Old Town. Yet the area continually improves and re-imagines itself in new, contemporary ways. Mixed in with the historical facades, recently built structures reflect different architectural styles, lending an authentic and thoroughly individual spirit cultivated here for more than 150 years. Although the City of Temecula now boasts a population of more than 114,000 and over 3 million visitors each year, our heritage is never forgotten.
