WELCOME Welcome to the best coastal community in Southern California. Whether you live in, work in or are visiting Manhattan Beach, you’ve landed in a beautiful place in which the pristine public beach welcomes guests all year. Residents take pride in their property and the beaches. The businesses range from charming independently-owned and operated boutiques, to world-class restaurants and shopping, to the salty old dive bars and pancake houses that greet sandy feet everyday. The water quality is outstanding which creates the crystal blue sparkle, residents and visitors enjoy all year. The sea life loves it too. It’s not unusual to catch a daily glimpse of dolphins (or occasional sea lion) surfing the waves. The sunsets in Manhattan Beach are stunning, particularly in the fall and winter months. Equally impressive is the serenity of the early mornings. The mist on the ocean, the way the rising sun illuminates the beach and ocean or a serene early morning walk, ride or jog along the strand. It’s the perfect way to start the day. If you are a runner, you might enjoy the woodchip path on the greenbelt that stretches from the very northern end of the city to the southern tip, where it merges into Hermosa Beach. If a park is more your speed, there are plenty to choose from; Sand Dune Park, Bruce’s Beach, Polliwog Park, Live Oak, and Manhattan Heights… they each offer different amenities, views, and experiences. Questions? Need more information? Don’t know where to start? Planning your next business move, a vacation, wedding, or special event? We have answers; advice and can connect you with the best choices, businesses, and people to make your experience just perfect. Stop by, call, follow us, or check out our website for effective resources, tips, and where to start planning your next venture. Let us be a part of your trip or next journey. We hope to see you around town.

THE BEACH VOLLEYBALL WALK OF FAME MANHATTAN BEACH PIER MANHATTAN BEACH BLVD AND THE STRAND

E

veryone knows the iconic Manhattan Beach Pier; after all, it turned 100 years old in 2020. Our Roundhouse Aquarium, nestled at the end, distinguishes it from other piers in any coastal photo or cinematic cityscape. But did you know that every winner of the worldfamous Manhattan Beach Open (MBO) has their name engraved on the Pier itself? Manhattan Beach is the Mecca of Beach Volleyball and host of the longest-running tournament in the USA - the “Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball” - the MBO. Winners have their name etched into a volleyball-shaped plaque and earn the right to be woven into the tapestry of our city’s history. Manhattan Beach legend Charles Saikley, the first MBO tournament director and father of the raucous and much-loved Sixman tournament, starts off the walk with a centered plaque in his honor. From there, the best of the game memorialized - Karch Kiraly with three different partners, Manhattan’s own Mike Dodd, the years of dominance from Kerri Walsh and Misty May, and the more recent victories by America’s Sweetheart - April Ross. I’m a beach player, so this means the world to me. But the history of this city’s game is remarkable and important to all. Plus, you can round out your walk with a visit to the Roundhouse Aquarium and the best views of the city at Pier’s end.

ACH LIGHT GATE HIGHLAND AND 15TH, JUST NORTH OF THE MANHATTAN BEACH LIBRARY

T

he Light Gate is like nothing I’ve seen before. The 15-ft. tall prismatic glass keyhole reflects the sun’s light, changing hues by the minute and angle. At any given moment, the panes morph and meld brilliant fuschias, lime greens, and royal purples, making for a supernaturally lit selfie. The piece was commissioned by the city to celebrate our centennial in 2012. Artists Mags Harries and Lajos Héder were chosen from a pool of 160 possible artists. Their colorfully reflective, massive piece of glass art adorns the courtyard of our stunningly chic, massive glass Los Angeles County Library (which is also worth a pop-in if you have the time). Twice a year, on January 27th and November 14th, the sun sets directly centered in the keyhole. What happens when the sun unlocks the key to Manhattan Beach? It’s a local secret; you’ll just have to find out yourself.

POLLIWOG PARK 1601 MANHATTAN BEACH BLVD

J

ust two miles east of the sprawling sandy beaches of Manhattan lies a wholly different type of natural beauty: Polliwog Park, the biggest park in Manhattan Beach and a hub of suburban activity. Polliwog boasts multiple large-scale playgrounds that even adults can get excited about. I’ll vouch for that; I spent an hour in a wooden sandbox boat with my nephew. Complete with a dog park, public barbecues and gazebos, and creative stationary exercise equipment, Polliwog has something for every age. In the summers, they host movie nights and the famous Concerts in the Park series that features the best local summer music shows in Southern California. Begg Pool is open for business, even during the pandemic with a reservation, as well as the Premiere Field batting cages and other public fields for recreational use. Check www.citymb.info/visitors/parks-and-facilities for real-time information on available amenities.

THE MANHATTAN BEACH MURAL PROJECT

ACH LA KINGS MURAL 1103 HIGHLAND AVE.

This cool optometrist office, Beach Cities Optometry, is owned by die-hard Kings fans. They collaborated with the LA Kings and commissioned graffiti artists Shane Jessup and Tim Cleary to liven up their medical building and celebrate the many Los Angeles Kings players that live in the South Bay. Snap a pic with Kopitar!

THE ARRAY OF MANHATTAN BEACH MURALS

Initially, I planned to highlight the King’s Mural featured on the north and south wall of Beach Cities Optometry on Highland and 11th. But in the last five years, the city has opened itself up to street art in the most freeing yet captivating way. There are loads of selfie-worthy locales scattered throughout the city. Find your favorite and have at it. MANHATTAN HOUSE 1019 MANHATTAN BEACH BLVD

DWorld-famous Ricardo Gonzalez painted this Instagram-worthy mural two years ago on the side of Polish in North Manhattan. The trendy white and pink calligraphed message set on Tiffany Blue encourages widespread love (and makes for an excellent proposal site). Do you dare? “LOVE YOU LIKE”

DWhat was once a plain brown building just west of Manhattan’s busiest intersection (Sepulveda and MB Blvd.) is now a four-sided work of art. This is basically fourmurals-in-one and acts as a cultural introduction to the heart of the city.

DThe city’s public art fund paid three artists to beautify three oft-seen areas of Manhattan Beach. 75 YEARS IN MANHATTAN BEACH

“THIS MUST BE THE PLACE” 1138 HIGHLAND AVE

DBetween the Kettle, a classic Manhattan Beach staple, and Esperanza, Manhattan Beach’s newest restaurant, a simple mindfulness message inspired by the Talking Heads and painted by Rebecca Simms nudges passersby to live in the moment and enjoy where they’re at right now. So popular, the mural expanded and bounced over to the north end of the restaurant on Higland Ave and Center Place. This is the best smelling mural in town!

925 N SEPULVEDA BLVD

DLocated on the north side of the Baskin-Robbins store on Sepulveda Blvd. is a colorful mural painted in 2018 celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Ely-Smartt center. Artist Kevin Anderson, perhaps best known for his epic 72-foot mural celebrating San Diego County inside a pedestrian tunnel in Mission Valley, was commissioned by Heather Miller, Ely’s grandaughter and now the center’s general manager. The mural is a whimsical depiction of various landmarks found around Manhattan Beach. From the pier, to the ducks floating in the pond at Polliwog Park, make sure you study the mural for all the little clues as you enjoy a double scoop at Baskin Robbins.

here’s nothing like a stroll on The Strand. It’s the most coveted real estate in LA, with uninterrupted ocean views and striking oceanfront property. For those that can’t afford the homes, we’re lucky enough to have the miles-long concrete boardwalk lining the shores. At the border of Manhattan and Hermosa, The Strand breaks off into a walk path and a bike path, making the journeys much safer and easier for both parties. Along your route, check out the three-lot mansion on 3rd Street, the Pier on 12th Street, the Olympic-level beach volleyball players on Marine Street, the workout spaces throughout, including the one below Bruce’s Beach on 26th, and the surfers down in El Porto around 33rd Street. Sunrise or sunset . . . it’s always open and always beautiful.

VETERANS PARKWAY BETWEEN VALLEY AND ARDMORE, RUNNING THE LENGTH OF MANHATTAN BEACH

L

ike The Strand, the Veterans Parkway, (locals call it the greenbelt) is a path running 7.8 miles through Manhattan and to the northern edge of Redondo Beach. The greenbelt, however, is inland and teeming with lush foliage. Until the late 20th century, it was a railroad connecting Hermosa and Manhattan to the the docks in Redondo. After endless negotiating, project proposals, and lawsuits Manhattan and Hermosa worked together to create a gorgeous and lengthy park connecting the two sister cities. As the greenbelt winds past the meadows of Valley Park in North Hermosa, the unbroken path flows seamlessly into South Manhattan. The newly re-mulched walk path winds through low-hanging branches of Ginko Bilboa, flowering Eucalyptus varieties, and the stunning red of New Zealand Christmas trees. Environmentally-conscious, low water ivy and grasses line the slopes on either side of the belt. The green explosion is a welcome change in the densely populated mass of homes, tan sands, and blue water. The path’s softness provides a gentler surface to run or walk, and the natural fauna a more discreet landing zone for pups. Look it up on the All Trails app.

BRUCE’S BEACH 2600 HIGHLAND AVE

I

f you’re looking for a shock of green with an ocean view, look no further than Bruce’s Beach. This three-tiered coastal park overlooking two blocks of the Pacific is a suburban-like oasis among the sidewalks and sand of the South Bay. But this park has a history, one that looks to divide and breed discomfort in our community. The Strandside land of Bruce’s Beach was owned by Charles and Willa Bruce, a Black couple in the early 1900s. They owned and operated an integrated resort - the first Pacific oceanfront property available to Black people in the days of Jim Crow laws and widespread racism. After runins with prejudiced and violent beachgoers and locals, the city of Manhattan Beach claimed the Bruce’s land and the plots of other surrounding landowners through eminent domain to build the park, shutting down the one Black-owned resort on the West Coast and sending the Bruce family inland. The seized land sat vacant for two decades. Bruce’s Beach history has been muddied and rewritten over the years, but a coalition of Manhattan Beach locals are fighting to tell the real story. The eponymous park changed names in 2006 to honor the Bruce family, but some ask for more than recognition. Regardless of what’s “right” moving forward, we as a city must recognize the sins of the past. Acknowledgment is the first step to acceptance, which leads to change and progress. The benches here, and the expansive views, are perfect for a moment to contemplate how far we’ve come without ignoring where we still must go.

s mentioned in my Neighborhoods + Businesses article on page 20, the Manhattan Village Shopping Center is a new and improved version of its former self. Manhattan Village already housed some of the most necessary big retailers in Manhattan Beach, like Macy’s and the Apple Store. Now they’ve added to their experience in a significant way with new stores (VANS, Sephora, Williams Sonoma) and better amenities. Parking tripled; stores are open for business and heavily monitored for safety; the dining is more varied and divine than ever. Whether you’re in the mood for a new experience from the new additions Mercado, Joey Restaurant, Edo, or Boa Steakhouse and Silver Lake Ramen (coming soon), a familiar pie from CPK, or a quick, healthy bite at Urban Plates, Manhattan Village is an excellent place to eat. Need to work off those calories? No problem! CorePower Yoga and CycleBar can help. Plus - free parking. Say no more. Keep an eye on this marquis property as the openings continue to roll out throughout the next year.

EL PORTO OR NORTH MANHATTAN (YOU DECIDE) ANYTHING WEST OF HIGHLAND AND ONCE YOU ARE NORTH OF ROSECRANS

T

his surfer’s paradise is a point of debate among locals. Travelers heading to Manhattan Beach via the prettiest road in LA - Vista del Mar - pass through the city’s northernmost part bearing two different names. Even my location description above is vague; this little slice of quiet and originality feels wholly different from the rest of Manhattan Beach. Maybe that’s why the name El Porto stuck. But I challenge it. To me, North Manhattan is anything between Marine St. and Rosecrans. Anything North of Rosecrans is El Porto. So I’m making that a thing, here and now. Regardless of terminology, El Porto offers a great surf and local staples. The fast and powerful break creates excellent opportunities to catch a wave while the sandy ocean floor provides a soft wipeout landing. Plus, the steep terrain of El Porto makes for unrivaled panoramic views of adjacent cities, surrounding mountains, and endless Pacific waters. Pancho’s and OB’s are laid back and fun; FISHBAR is a great place for a date, and M & LOVE cafe is a newer health restaurant that makes an excellent gluten free bagel. Don’t miss the local old-school favorite, Sloopy’s Beach Café. The peanut butter chocolate shake is decadent. The only electric bike rental in town can be found at Manhattan E-Bikes on Highland Avenue. Rent and ride the strand for miles.

Self-Care and Mindfulness by Kim Smith

The beautiful weather and scenery in Manhattan Beach inspire many to health, activity, and wellness. It’s easier to get out and run when you have an oceanview on The Strand or a pristinely-kept path like the greenbelt. But what about our mental health? Especially after a year like 2020 when we were thrown more frequently than a sweater in a permanent press cycle. How do we stay grounded and intentional when money is tight, connection is scarce, and restrictions on socializing and distancing continue? With those important and poignant questions in mind, the Chamber wanted to offer a little help from our friends - people in the community that live and work by mindfulness. These four business owners not only meditate and prioritize introspection, but they also know how to illicit that in their clients and loved ones. Their words brought us delight and assurance; we hope they have the same effect on you.

richness is, where the fears are, where the obstacles are - bravely and while breathing, then we’re not going to unlock that next evolution of where we can be individually and collectively. There were jokes on social media about us being asked to stay on our couches during quarantine while our grandparents were called to war, and it was funny. But the idea of sitting in the quiet with yourself - that is the frontline. That’s about the scariest place most people could go. Sitting alone is sitting with the enemy for some. Our helping people deal with the pandemic became about getting past defensive routines to a place that was better than being in person. To something even more real.” It’s okay to sit with youself; listen, breathe, reflect, and learn. More please!

anhattan Beach’s four square miles include four distinct neighborhoods, all offering a different feel. The Tree Section, lined with shady trees and no sidewalks, provides a slower, more suburban feel. East Manhattan Beach, made up of larger lots with bigger homes, boasts sweeping Los Angeles city views. The Hill Section flaunts some of the most spectacular architecture in the city with lush, native landscapes and sprawling ocean views. And, of course, The Sand Section, with its walkability and oceanfront mansions, rounds out the four as the most compact, coveted, and celebrated neighborhood in the South Bay. Each of the four sections offers different landscape, views, lot sizes, house structures, street characteristics, and elementary schools. Few cities of our small size and only 37,000 residents have such clearly defined neighborhoods. In addition to our iconic pier, vast beaches, copious volleyball courts, surfable waves, varying topography, and bustling, culture-filled downtown - the four neighborhoods are a significant part of what makes Manhattan Beach unique, even among other beach towns.

ast Manhattan encompasses the most considerable amount of land, there’s room for mega-lot homes and spacious floorplans. Within the East Manhattan boundaries, distinct sub-neighborhoods developed over the years. Residents covet the Mira Costa neighborhood for its cityscapes and walkability to the high school. Many families relocate there before or during their children’s high school years for convenience and community connection. Nothing like the Friday night lights and energy from the award winning Mira Costa High School. It’s also home to the Poets Section - a series of streets named after famous poets such as Longfellow, Keats, and Tennyson and the little known “Bel Air of Manhattan Beach.” Tucked at the bottom of the hill down Longfellow, huge lots, miniature vineyards, and hideaway homes nestle under green canopies

of native trees. It’s an area that feels quite separate from the rest of the city. In addition to the Mira Costa Neighborhood, East Manhattan is also home to the Manhattan Village gated community for families who want more privacy. Two other sub-sections are the post-war tract housing developments Liberty Village and Manhattan Heights. With ample space and accessibility, East Manhattan boasts most of MB’s business. PCH/Sepulveda - Manhattan’s longest thoroughfare - with its proximity to the freeways and accessibility to locals makes East Manhattan the likely hub of commerce. The Sepulveda Corridor, as it’s known, has experienced upgrades and redevelopment over the last five years. Two Guns Espresso upped the ante on Goat Hill, Target and Toyota are corporate staples, Manhattan Medical Center is rapidly filling with essential tenants, and GROW offers truly healthful grocery options to health-conscious Manhattanites. California Naturalist Mike Garcia, owner of Enviroscape. He prioritizes earth-friendly gardening in his landscape designs to conserve water and promote environmental harmony. “The greatest environmental challenge that Southern California faces is our lack of water,” Garcia tells me. “Native plants are perfectly suited for our dry climate - they require very little water, and they support local pollinators.” Flowers like the California Poppy and the official flower of Manhattan Beach - a gorgeous golden Beach Primrose - combine captivating colors and attract local bees, butterflies, and birds. Native grasses, succulents, and shrubs add lush greenery without the need for sprinklers using valuable water. The Hill Section yards blossom with unique, environmentally appropriate flora that highlights the expansive, impressive lots and respects the dry climate of Manhattan Beach. The Hill Section views are widely considered the best in the city. The varied and high terrain allows 360-degree vistas of mountains, city, and sea. Homes in the Hill Section rest

ample parking - something of which the Sand Section could use a little more. This neighborhood, like the Tree Section, is mostly residential once you breach the borders of Manhattan Beach Blvd and Sepulveda. First Republic Bank and Gelson’s revolutionized the Hill Section, bringing high-end grocery shopping within walking distance (incredibly valuable during the pandemic). Deep Roots Garden, acupuncturists and masseurs, and small, private gyms provide us with places to get into nature and ourselves, returning to the earth and recentering our bodies. It’s also the oldest part of town, home to the original settlement in the late 1800s when the unincorporated village was known as Potencia - Spanish for “potential.” Residential neighborhoods quickly filled the sandy slope approaching the ocean along the 2.1-mile oceanfront. Those homes are now arguably the most sought-after places to live in all 88 cities of LA County. A study released by Property Shark in late 2017 showed Manhattan Beach has the highest median price per square foot in the county at $943. Malibu is second at $933, and Beverly Hills is third at $839. The small Sand Section lots, usually 30 x 90 ft., are rarely for sale and go quickly when they hit the market. Even within the small framework of the Sand Section, there are also subsections

West of Highland vs. East of it; Walk streets, The Strand, and North Manhattan, or as locals still refer to it as: El Porto. As I talked to residents and realtors, the debate is so strong that voices raised a bit, and opinions abounded. El Porto is what longtime residents know as a surfer’s paradise North of Rosecrans along Highland running down to the water. Realtors and business owners in the area have attempted a rebranding to avoid mistaking Manhattan City limits for a separate municipality. But a lot of people call anything North of Bruce’s Beach North Manhattan (myself included). So it’s a little confusing. Whatever it technically is, I never found out. those in the Dining Section. But the sand section also offers boutiques like Marine Layer, Aviator Nation, {pages} a bookstore, and Gum Tree. Metlox Plaza hosts high-end businesses like Trilogy Spa, Vineyard Vines, Kasai Hair, and Waterleaf Interior Home and Gifts. The Manhattan Beach Library, an ultra-modern glass box full of my favorite things, offers panoramic ocean views on their second floor. Adjacent is the Light Gate, one of Manhattan’s Must-Sees in 2021 (page 8). Stephanie Cochrane’s Waste Less Shop and sizzling hot Sweat Yoga both call (my version of) North Manhattan home, along with culinary staples like Pancho’s, Sloopy’s Café, OB’s Bar and Grill and the North End Cafe. The allure of the Sand Section is proximity to downtown and the unrivaled views of our iconic pier. There’s nothing better than having the Roundhouse Aquarium in your sights, which is why the Sand Section is so inviting and exclusive. This begs the question: What about Manhattan isn’t inviting? Whether you’re enjoying the space and quiet in East Manhattan, the slowness and homey feel of the Tree Section, the grandeur and beauty of the Hill Section, or the quintessential Manhattan-ness of the Sand Section - Manhattan Beach is a trove of gifts for all. These kids have no idea about the side effects of injections. This has to be continually done forever, and some are starting at a very young age. You’re traumatizing your lips and facial structure several times a year. And it hurts me to see disfiguration from infection and injections. “Because of the instant gratification that we’re used to,” she continues, “it’s been the hardest dilemma. DR. MARYAM BAKHTIYARI D.D.S.

Dr. Maryam envisions a future where natural beauty is attainable and valued. The esteemed local dentist and TMJ expert used her years of experience and ability to think outside the box when she invented BLAfit - a scientifically-backed facial exercising device that naturally builds firmer facial skin and fuller lips in daily one-minute sessions. Her 27 years of practice gave her the confidence and knowledge to develop a revolutionary product. And her experience as a Middle Eastern woman in a male-dominated field gave her the perseverance and grit to be a world-changer. “I wanted to create something to balance the facial muscles,” Dr. Maryam says. “I’m a scientist and an artist; I love beauty, and I believe in natural beauty, not enhancements or surgical procedures. BLAfit enhances your facial structure naturally.” Dr. Maryam, her physician husband, and an aircraft engineer collaborated to create this seemingly simple yet wholly complex instrument. Just 30 seconds a day in either direction garners impressive and noticeable results. One of the motivations for Dr. Maryam was her desire to combat the “ideal woman” perpetuated on social media, what some

“I wanted to create something to balance the facial muscles, I’m a scientist and an artist; I love beauty, and I believe in natural beauty, not enhancements or surgical procedures. BLAfit enhances your facial structure naturally.” Dr. Maryam Bakhtiyari or the truth. All of that is fake news - an imagined norm of what a woman should be. I try to teach my patients, youngsters in my family, and my daughter that every woman can achieve beauty naturally. You can totally tone facial muscles and plump lips without injecting toxins.” Dr. Maryam encourages all her patients to be their best natural self by prioritizing nutrition, wellness, and exercise. Not just for the body, but for the face, too. Our faces have 57 little muscles. Some are minuscule, which means they hardly need any work to stay fit. Dr. Maryam has had offers from investors and celebrities to take over BLAfit. But it’s her baby, one that Dr. Maryam isn’t ceding lightly. “The BLAfit project is so important to me as I wish to help this new generation of women to achieve their vision of themselves naturally.”

CHEVY LAURENT

Chevy Laurent envisions a future where women, especially women of color, are empowered and supported in their dreams. Chevy is the founder of RydeFyr - a premium cycling boutique that offers a fully immersive multi-sensory and motivating fullbody, heated cycling workout. “Imagine the best dance club you’ve ever been to is inside the studio,” she says, “but instead of dancing on the floor, cyclers ride to the rhythm of the music while also performing choreographed moves on the bike. That is RydeFYR!” Chevy guides all of her classes and makes sure that riders at all levels can experience vigorous mental and physical workouts. While her current professional endeavor focuses on health and fitness, Chevy has a decade of experience in corporate America. She’s in charge now, but it hasn’t always been this way. “I spent over ten years working in corporate marketing and sales before I transitioned into becoming a full-time fitness professional and then opening RydeFYR,” she says. “And as a woman of color - a double minority if you will - I’ve always had to work extremely hard to prove myself and break through the ‘glass ceiling.’ Even when I worked for big-box corporate fitness companies, the ceiling for me as a woman and a minority was still very much there.

TAYLOR RYAN

Taylor Ryan envisions a future that she has creative control over. Taylor’s a lifetime local and freshman at Mira Costa. She also plays Lacrosse, and her sport inspired a brilliant protective product. One that already has investors, has won competitions, and is set to begin manufacturing in California early next year. A few years ago, after getting hit multiple times in her rough sport, she sought a product to protect her chest. There was nothing satisfactory on the market; ironically, the one product she found made the problem worse. “We wanted to find a solution!” Taylor says of her and her parents. “And that’s when we came up with the Unstoppable Protective Cup.” The two breast cups come in a set and slip into any sports bra. They boast a hard outer shell with strategic cutouts for flexibility, while the inside is malleable foam for comfort and fit. The cups use similar protective technology as NFL helmets, and more importantly - they solved Taylor’s problem. Unstoppable Protective Cup all started with an idea, but Taylor’s environment, community, and family helped her succeed. She cultivated her imaginative mind in Maker’s Space, a school program focused on product creation. Her parents encour-

aged her and helped her find the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA). “I highly recommend it,” she says. “It’s great.” YEA is a national program that teaches kids grades 6-12 business plans, margins, investment opportunities, and more. She won the Shark Tank-style Manhattan Beach competition (complete with seed money) and advanced to Nationals, where she made the Top 8. Though this is her first formal invention, Taylor’s always had an entrepreneurial spirit. “I always came up with creative solutions to problems I’d find around

“I’ve always loved the idea of being my own boss and creating a company of exactly what I want.” Taylor Ryan the house,” she says. I asked her what some of her creative solutions to everyday problems were. In the most charming yet professional response, she said, “I might turn some of them into businesses in the future, so I maybe shouldn’t reveal those at the moment.” Brilliant. And this proves she’s not done yet. “I’ve always loved the idea of being my own boss and creating a company of exactly what I want.” With a business in hand and a trove of ideas, Taylor plans to study Entrepreneurship and Business in college at USC or Pepperdine. Though she’s over three years away, I bet she’s a shoo-in. Taylor’s advice for other entrepreneurs young and old is: “Even though you might set a plan, lay it out perfectly - anything can change. There are always ways to manage. Even if everything gets hectic and doesn’t go according to plan, just stay calm and work around it. It’s gonna be a lot of work and incredibly time-consuming. And at times, you might think, ‘Maybe I should just give up.’ But if you keep pushing, it’s incredibly rewarding.” A fifteen-year-old just inspired me to go for my dreams.

Not Stephanie - she founded a business to do her part in solving the problem (even with a full-time workload as a dental hygienist). She’s diverted hundreds of thousands of pieces of plastic from landfills and planted more than 4,000 trees since the opening. “It’s inspiring knowing that my small actions as an individual are creating measurable change. If we all believed in that power, the world could look very different than it does today.” Stephanie’s womanhood has shaped her personal and professional journeys. “Growing up,” she says, “it was impressed upon me to find a stable, well-paying career that allowed flexibility in motherhood. I’ve had an entrepreneurial spirit since I was young, but was raised in an environment where taking risks was not really encouraged. As I grew in my career and as a woman, I became more STEPHANIE COCHRANE

Stephanie Cochrane envisions a future with less waste. She runs The Waste Less Shop in North Manhattan. Her storefront is a Rose Apothecary-esque boutique featuring sustainably sourced and packaged artisanal items. Stephanie started the shop in 2018 after realizing that she couldn’t find plastic-free products in stores. “I’ve been in love with nature and our planet since I was young,” she says. “I didn’t realize that love would evolve into a career until I was hiking in the Himalayas. I saw plastic Coke bottles and Snickers wrappers littering the most beautiful region in the world. That triggered something inside me.” Many people have these Eureka moments that inspire temporary or superficial change.

empowered to challenge my potential and connect to my purpose. I moved to Manhattan Beach in 2018 and met some amazing female businesswomen and entrepreneurs. The Waste Less Shop carries products almost entirely created by small female-owned businesses.” With the support of Manhattan Beach women, Stephanie found her “Why” and felt empowered to take risks. “The best professional advice I’ve received,” she says, “is that if you think you will look back and regret not taking an opportunity or following a dream, you should take the opportunity and follow the dream. Even if it’s risky and you fail, you can at least look back knowing that you tried.” And her advice to other business people? “If you want to start a business simply to get rich,” she says, “you will likely find yourself miserable in the pursuit. However, if you start a business to fulfill an inner purpose, even if you fail you will have spent your time doing something you love. And I don’t see that as a failure at all.”

KATHY WINTERHALDER

Kathy Winterhalder envisions a future where world-shakers and change-makers inspire others to do the same. Kathy and her sister Sue Swan created the Distinguished Speaker Series 26 years ago. “Our audiences,” Kathy says, “are made up of families, friends, neighbors, community and business leaders who like to be entertained in a unique and compelling way.” The Series has expanded throughout the LA area, including the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center on Manhattan Beach Blvd. and Aviation.

Their events feature captivating minds and successful business people speaking about innovation, entrepreneurship, and vision. The Distinguished Speaker Series seeks to empower and educate. “Our mission is to offer audiences across Los Angeles the chance to learn from six amazing people changing the world. We also give neighbors from differing backgrounds and political persuasions the opportunity to come together.” The difference between The Distinguished Speaker Series and other conferences is the return on investment. “Billionaires and CEOs understand the value of [speaker series]; they get exclusive invitations and pay thousands of dollars traveling the world to attend events. We present many of the same speakers as these forums. However, the big distinction is - for the price of a good steak dinner - we bring the same experience to our members at each of our locations.” Kathy’s parents raised her to be the same type of person she enlists in her events. “Luckily, I was raised to think that I could do anything. My parents were entrepreneurs. I watched them take chances.” Kathy and her sister Sue learned from their parents’ success and failures; equipped with that knowledge, they cultivated the confidence to start a business. The best advice she received along the way mirrors the advice she gives other professionals: “Read everything you can. Do your homework. Trust

“Stand up for your ideas and don’t let fears of others influence your decisions. I think women have a more difficult time doing that sometimes. ” Kathy Winterhalder

your instincts, dream big, and be willing to work hard. No task is too menial.” Kathy doesn’t feel disadvantaged as a woman in a man’s world; she has profound perspective and encourages other women to be strong in their beliefs. “Stand up for your ideas and don’t let fears of others influence your decisions. I think women have a more difficult time doing that sometimes. Never stop networking and learning from others. Find the helpers. You will be surprised by how many people and resources are available to help and are very willing to give free advice.” But the main reason Kathy is so successful in her endeavors is her genuine enjoyment of the process. “I love what I do. I have to pinch myself that I have built a business that allows me to meet the most remarkable people in the entire world.” MB manhattanbeachchamber.com

he Strand House has had a significant influence on the dining scene in Manhattan Beach. They don’t rely solely on their oceanfront location to make the restaurant spectacular. They prioritize fresh, local ingredients and creative flavor profiles to make an innovative and unique menu. Manhattan Beach has become more of a dining destination in the last 10-15 years. The Strand House was one of the first to jump on that program and flip the city around. Now Manhattan Beach is not just known for our beach community but also our food. It’s something that sets us apart from the other beach communities. We lead the charge in the South Bay as far as dining experience.

Chef David Slay of SLAY

In the last 18 months, new and exciting restaurants have moved into all the different corners of Manhattan Beach. SLAY, by Chef David Slay, is a swanky steak and fish house where Darren’s used to be. Another North Manhattan fresh concept is M & Love cafe, a plant-based, gluten-free establishment across from Two Guns Espresso’s new location. The Source Cafe - a Hermosa Beach allergy-friendly earthy cafe - opened their second location complete with a full kitchen and organic beer and wine selections in Spring 2020 on Sepulveda across from Barsha. Paradise Bowls on Manhattan Ave is a go-to for locals seeking a fresh healthy acai bowl. They open early so you can start your day with a local’s favorite, the Gaucho Bowl. Prepare to be hooked on health!

Along with all the newbies, MB also hosts plenty of classic favorites. Ercoles boasts the best burgers in Manhattan Beach and is a daily haunt for many longtime residents. Summertime and Six Man favorite Shellback is the essence of Manhattan Beach - the walls are lined with beach volleyball memorabilia, and their legendary Fanta shots are... well, legendary for a reason. The Kettle and Uncle Bill’s Pancake House rival for the best breakfast in town, but the view at Uncle Bill’s is hard to beat. OB’s Pub & Grill, located in

share plates, a communal sampling of the menu meant to inspire conversation and connection. Fishbar, a North MB gem, offers a beachy feel with fresh seafood options and delicious cocktails. Nick’s and Petro’s, located in Metlox Plaza, bring fine dining a little further from the Pier. They both recently celebrated longterm anniversaries in Manhattan Beach and continue to provide fresh, healthy, upscale options. Whether you’re looking for seared scallops or shrimp tacos, filet mignon or a sloppy burger, a view or a dive bar, a local staple or a brand new innovation - Manhattan Beach is your go-to South Bay dining spot. North Manhattan on Highland Ave. is a local favorite and, as owner Steve Delk tells me, it’s the “Cheers at the Beach. When you walk in, you immediately feel at home. If you don’t know someone, you will before you leave.” Manhattan Beach has become a dining destination and a cuisine leader in the South Bay. Some of the best restaurants in LA call Manhattan Beach their home. Love & Salt is a California-inspired Italian restaurant that believes food only needs those two ingredients to be really great.
