Destination OTERO

o view Otero County and the Tularosa Basin as a place one just passes through would be as unjust as being robbed at a gas station. Indeed, this is one of the most unique places on earth, both from a geographical perspective as well as the human charters who found a way to exist here. The Basin runs one hundred miles north to south and forty-five miles from the Sacramento Mountains on the East to the San Andres and Organ Mountains on the West. Nowhere on this earth will one find such diversity in landscape, favorable weather, or intriguing history of those who tamed it. Traveling West from the picturesque Village Cloudcroft and the ponderosa pines, the elevation drops nearly 5,000 feet in just sixteen miles before landing in the heart of a

Chihuahuan Desert, 225 square miles of which are covered by pristine white sand dunes. White Sands National Monument plays host to some 600,000 visitors a year and is a favorite shooting location for film crews from around the world. In contrast to these blinding white dunes, to the north lays the coal black remains of an ancient volcano and the lava flow that crawled down the basin for some 45 miles. Otero County paints a clear picture of the results when gigantic forces of nature do battle over millions of years. As interesting as the terrain, is the history of those who attempted to tame it. Indian tribes, Conquistadors, drifters, gun fighters, outlaws, and those who pursued them, Cattle men and miners crisscrossed this country, most only looking to be free and alone. All tough and independent, personalities like a rattle snake and none believing that the meek would inherit the earth. This is a rich country by anyway one chooses to measure it. Alamogordo HISTORY

Transportation

Alamogordo is conveniently located at the intersection of two four-lane highways, U.S. 70 and U.S. 54. These two highways provide excellent connections to three major north-south and east-west interstate highways, I-10, I-25 and I-40. Dry weather is the rule 300-plus days a year, so truckers and tourists alike find the southern part of New Mexico a pleasant route year-round. h e City of Alamogordo was founded in 1898, when the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad, headed by Charles Eddy, extended the railway to the town. Charles influenced the design of the community, which included large wide thoroughfares and treelined irrigation canals. Charles Eddy’s brother, John Eddy, named the new city Alamogordo after a grove of fat cottonwoods he remembered from the Pecos River area. When Alamogordo was laid out in 1898, the east-west streets were given numerical designations, while northsouth streets were named after states. The present-day White Sands Boulevard was then called Pennsylvania Avenue.

Tularosa Basin Historical Museum

The Tularosa Basin Museum of History is at 1004 N. White Sands Boulevard in a WPA building built in 1938. The museum celebrates the history of the Tularosa Basin and Otero County and holds a collection of photographs, documents, and relics. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is managed by a board of directors.

Local transportation is provided by Alamogordo’s award-winning Z-Trans Public Transportation Service, providing service to Holloman Air Force Base, Alamogordo, La Luz, Alamorosa, Tularosa, Mescalero and Las Cruces. This mass transit service is available Monday – Saturday, 6 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. for $1 per ride and veterans ride free.

Air Transportation

White Sands Regional Airport serves the Tularosa Basin with amenities such as a café, and Fixed Base Operator services, where private pilots are provided gas, maintenance and supplies through Ed’s Flying Service. El Paso International Airport (El Paso, Texas) is the closest major international airport, approximately 85 miles (90-minute drive) south of Alamogordo. Carriers there include American, Delta, Southwest, United Airlines and US Airways.

Railroad

Commercial and industrial freight service from Alamogordo is available through Union Pacific Railroad. Alamogordo has two rail spurs.

White Sands National Monument

he mountain- ringed valley known as the Tularosa Basin lies at the north Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world’s great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. At White Sands National Monument, oceans of white gypsum sands and magnificent wave-like dunes, cover 275 square miles of desert, only 15 minutes west of Alamogordo. The world’s largest gypsum field, White Sands has unique weather conditions and it shelters some 800 species of animals, including badgers, foxes, coyotes and roadrunners. Trails through the dunes include the raised Interdune Boardwalk and the Dune Life Nature Trail, dotted with interpretive exhibits on wildlife and other features. Come visit, and hike, bike, camp, drive, picnic and sled your way through is incredible natural wonder. Open year-round, except for Christmas Day.

New Mexico Museum of Space History

Did you know that New Mexico’s Tularosa Basin was the cradle of America’s space program? Or that Alamogordo hosts a world class museum devoted to the history, science, and technology of space travel? A visit to the New Mexico Museum of Space History rewards you with the sight of an authentic Moon Rock, as well as rare examples of the first man-made satellites, Sputnik and Explorer. Permanent exhibits highlight the history of rocketry and its pioneers. The International Space Hall of Fame, an integral part of the museum, recognizes the accomplishments of over 150 people around the world who have contributed to the quest for space. Toy Train Depot Museum & Train Ride

If you miss the train at the Toy Train Depot, there’s another one just down the line. The small-scale train ride departs every 30 minutes and circles Alameda Park. Inside the century-old depot you’ll find hundreds of scale models of train locomotives as well as passenger and freight cars, along with the world’s smallest scaled working train. A 1,000-square-foot HO layout depicts 1940s-era Alamogordo.

Lincoln National Forest

The Lincoln National Forest offers about 1.1 million acres in southcentral New Mexico for hunting, camping, biking, hiking, ATVing, winter sports and much more. Stretching north from Texas to the Capitan Mountains, with a landscape that varies from rugged canyons to gently sloping foothills. Elevations range from 4,200 feet to 11,500 feet. The Lincoln was first set aside as a forest reserve in 1902 to protect and conserve recreation values and water. Today, the Lincoln National Forest is one of 154 forests (and grasslands) that are managed for sustaining health, diversity, and productivity to meet the needs of present and future generations. The Lincoln’s headquarters is in Alamogordo, and its District Offices are located in Ruidoso, Cloudcroft and Carlsbad. Come out and enjoy the great outdoors!

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park

Visit the restored 19th-century ranch house of Oliver Lee, an influential settler in the New Mexican territory and the namesake of the Oliver Lee State Park. Situated south of Alamogordo in the Sacramento Mountains, the park lies at the mouth of Dog Canyon, where a trail takes you to a perennial stream and a retreat beneath shady cottonwoods. The Dog Canyon Recreational Trail offers striking views of the Tularosa Basin to the west and the Organ Mountains to the south. The park offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, camping, picnics, and wildlife sightings.

Three Rivers Petroglyph Site and Recreation Area

Three Rivers Petroglyph Site offers direct access to more than 21,000 glyphs of birds, animals, fish, insects, plants, and humans as well as geometric and abstract designs, all scattered across 50 acres of the northern Chihuahuan Desert. The petroglyphs date to between 900 and 1400 AD and were created by the Jornada Mogollon people, who used stone tools to remove the dark patina on the exterior of the rocks. Pick up a petroglyph guide at Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, which also offers hiking and backpacking trails as well as picnic and camping areas.

Heart of the Desert Pistachios & Wine

Eagle Ranch is the home of New Mexico’s first and largest producing pistachio groves with approximately 13,000 trees. Wines were added to the product line in 2002. The seven different varieties of grapes harvested each year make the production of a wide range of wines possible. George, an Air Force officer, was stationed at Holloman AFB in 1969. A long time family goal, was to return to agriculture after his military career. Rather than return to the Midwest, where both George and Marianne had been raised, they had grown to love the desert and wanted to stay in the Tularosa Basin. The search for a crop that would grow in the desert environment, began. The study of desert crops found that this particular desert had all the same essential elements as the pistachio growing regions of Iran. The decision was made. Pistachios would be the crop!

McGinn’s Pistachio Tree Ranch & Country Store

The World’s Largest Pistachio was built in honor of Pistachio Land’s founder, Thomas McGinn. After his passing in 2008, his son, Timothy McGinn erected this 30 foot sculpture in memory of his father. Tim wanted everyone who passed by PistachioLand to take note of what his dad created, a 111 acre pistachio orchard and vineyard, started from bare desert land in 1980. From the first trees planted to today, PistachioLand now is home to over 12,000 pistachio trees and 14 acres of wine grapes, McGinn’s Country Store and Arena Blanca Winery. #VisitAlamogordo 11

Alameda Park Zoo

ome to nearly 300 animals representing 90 species, the 12-acre Alameda Park Zoo offers an education center, picnic area, playground and gift shop that’s perfect for families and visitors of all ages. With a mission to promote education in the environmental fields of study, conservation, recreation and biological research, the zoo connects humans with animals through audio, visual and tactical experiences. Visit the Species Survival Plan Captive Facility for the Mexican Gray Wolf, take a guided tour, enroll in a docent program, or attend a lecture. Check the calendar for the annual Earth Day celebration, concerts and other events. Open daily 9 a.m to 5 p.m. (except Christmas and New Year’s Day)

Alamogordo Parks & Recreation

The Alamogordo Parks Department maintains 32 locations throughout the city, approximately 440 acres, 180 of which are irrigated. Many of these locations support community Youth and Adult Softball Leagues, Youth Baseball, Youth Flag & Tackle Football, Youth Soccer, Adult Roller Derby, tennis and more. The City has a great skate park, numerous covered playgrounds including the brand new Kids’ Zone, which offers handicap accessible equipment, parkour course, pavilions, grills and multigenerational areas of play. The City also recently added a 9-hole Disc Golf Course in Alameda Park. There are many great trails along our foothills and throughout town, and Alamogordo is home to the Pecos League Pupfish, an Adult Semiprofessional Baseball Team. 12 alamogordo.com

The Alamogordo Family Recreation Center meets the needs of the community through a variety of recreational opportunities including fitness, sports for adults and youth, childcare programs and more. The facility features a large pool and splashpad with slide, and swimming lessons are offered throughout the summer. The facilities are well maintained and improved continually for an inviting space for citizens to enjoy. The library continues to serve as a community center, historical archive, and valuable information resource for citizens of Otero County. The mission for the Alamogordo Public Library is to provide educational, informational, and recreational multi-media resources to all residents of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. The library’s collections are vast and offered in a wide variety of formats. In addition to books, movies, and music the library offers digital books, music, and databases that can be accessed from anywhere.

Wine, Pistachios, Pecans & more

New Mexico has a long history of wine production, starting with the mission grape brought here by the Spanish Colonists. The fertile soil, high altitude and dry moderate weather make the Tularosa Basin a perfect place to grow not only grapes but pistachios and pecans as well. You can explore numerous vineyards and nut farms, minutes from Alamogordo. Many locations have beautiful gift shops, gorgeous views, wine and nut tastings and tours daily. Visit these amazing locations to learn more about the rich history of farming in New Mexico, and don’t forget to pick up a bottle of wine and a burlap bag of your own nuts to take home.

Our annual Banquet is a popular event with usually over 500 attendees. Chamber and community members alike, come together to take a look at the great things that have happened throughout the year and also to discuss our vision for the future. This event is always a wonderful opportunity to network with fellow community leaders, entertain topics such as economic development, the successes of our members businesses, and new information for the coming year.

Sip into Spring Wine Festival- March

Formerly known as Spring Fling, the Chamber invites you to sip into spring and enjoy an amazing selection of wines; over 50 arts, crafts and agricultural product vendors. Enjoy a nice selection of food vendors and listen to live music from local bands. This event will take place over St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, March 16th and 17th at the Willie Estrada Civic Center.

Earth Day- April

This year will be the 25th annual celebration of our planet. This event takes place at the Alameda Park and Zoo in Alamogordo. The Earth Day celebration always takes place the last weekend in April.

Chamber Board of Directors Change of Command Banquet- June

Every year in June we wish our outgoing board members farewell and welcome our incoming board. This year’s event will be June 22 at the Willie Estrada Civic Center.

United We Stand Memorial- September

Our community unites to remember those who lost their lives and suffered due to the unimaginable tragedy that took place on September 11. We honor the fearless rescuers and recovery workers who put their own lives in jeopardy to save community members’ lives.

White Sands Balloon Invitational- September

Join us at the glistening White Sands National Monument for a beautiful hot air balloon event that many of the pilots use to prepare for the International Balloon Festival in Albuquerque. Music Festival, Food Vendors, Corn Hole Tournament and much more, this event is replacing the Red, White & Blue Brew & Music Fest where Bart Crow and Micky and the Motor Cars preformed their Red Dirt Country music hits. #PlayAlamogordo

he Flickinger Center for Performing Arts is a 612-seat theater in historic downtown Alamogordo. The auditorium hosts a wide variety of shows and events year round. Fall to spring is the Premier Series with eight to ten professional productions. These shows are unique, diverse and represent a vast array of genres from all over the world. Shows for the 2018-19 season include an Eagles Tribute, Hawaiian Swing Band, Artrageous, Mariachi Christmas, Robin Speilberg, Teresa Walters pianists, Blues Brothers Revue, Masters of Soul, Richter & Uzur, Vitaly an Illusionist and the family show “Toying with Science.” The February 14th show includes a special tribute to love with an extensive Chocolate Buffet. The theater contracts with many professional artists to do special performances for thousands of public, private and home-schooled children. The Flickinger stage hosts the Alamogordo Music Theater and Academy of Ballet shows several times a year. The “Miss

Alamogordo, Otero County & Miss Outstanding Teen, Sertoma Scholarship Pageant,” is held at the Flickinger. The stage showcases our outstanding local talent and is available to schools free of charge for their musical and theatrical programs. After the dynamic Premier Season ends, the Flickinger hosts the Tailgate Summer Concert Series in the parking lot of the NM Museum of Space History. On six summer nights, June through August, audiences enjoy beautiful sunsets and views, music by regional bands and spending time with family and friends under the stars. The Flickinger theater is available for rent by organizations or individuals for meetings, seminars, parties and other events that require a large comfortable space. Numerous local non-profits like the Center for Protective Environment and Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center Auxiliary rent the theater for fundraisers and concerts. Public community gatherings also use the Flickinger.

“Flickinger Films” is a new program. Thanks to a LEDA fund grant the theater has a new state of the art digital projector, sound system and a 13’ X 30’ movie screen. The film series brings organizations and families together to view teaching films and favorite movies. The Flickinger also partners with the Desert Lights Film Festival to bring local and regional middle and high school students’ films to the big screen. In the summer free movies are offered to local children. Next door, at 1106 New York Ave. is Patron’s Hall and Heritage Gallery. This is an art gallery, coffee shop and event center that supports the Flickinger. Specialty coffees and teas, ice-cream, light breakfast and lunches are served Monday through Friday. Every Tuesday evening Patron’s Hall hosts local musicians and Friday is Acoustic Open Mic Night. Come and enjoy food and entertainment. GCRMC is a 99 bed Det Norske Veritas accredited acute medical facility. Having served the citizens of Otero county and surrounding communities since 1949, GCRMC, a shared facility with Holloman Air Force Base since 1999, is now the largest non-government employer in Alamogordo with over 1,000 employees. The medical staff consists of 180 affiliated physicians and 80 active staff members practicing in the community. Year after year GCRMC continues to expand its services. • In 2015 GCRMC completed a joint venture with The Hospitals of Providence of El Paso, Texas, to bring a 24/7 Cardiac Cath Lab to our community. • As of January 2017, the GCRMC Cardiac Cath Lab has done over 1,000 procedures.

olloman AFB is the area’s largest employer, and the cornerstone of its economy. The base is home to the 49th wing, which operates and maintains the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted vehicles, all are synonymous with the most advanced aerospace technology the United States has to offer. Holloman is also the location of the 46th Test Group, which tests many of the Department of Defense’s latest technologies – radars to weapons systems. The high-Speed track used by the 46th Test Group to test missiles holds the land speed record of over Mach 9.

Healthcare

The healthcare industry is also a major employer here. Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center (GCRMC) is a joint venture with Holloman Air Force Base; it’s a model of Department of Defense and community collaboration. Tourism

Tourism is a multi-million dollar industry in Otero County. The flagships of the region’s tourism destinations are the Lodge in Cloudcroft and the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino. These two facilities employ over 1,000 hospitality workers. The Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino completed a multimillion dollar renovation, including work on the casino, championship golf course, world-class hunting operation and the winter play area, Ski Apache. Otero County is also famous for its pistachio groves and wineries, which attract thousands of visitors each year to taste local products grown in the Tularosa Basin.

Film

Filmmakers have long been taking advantage of the pristine beauty of the White Sands, the desert scenery, as well as the high-mountain streams and forests as backdrops for modeling shoots, TV movies and full-length feature films. In fact, cast and crewmembers from Dream Works-Paramount Pictures were in the area for months as they shot a major portion of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Not only did they find many of the services they required right in Otero County, they incorporated local structures for locations, found “extras” and were also made welcome on the local military bases.

The Otero County Film Office (OCFO) operates under the New Mexico Film Office as a participating member of the NM Film Statewide Liaison Network. OCFO is also one of only five New Mexico accredited and registered AFCI membership offices serving the world’s studio industry through the Association of Film Commissioners International. It serves as a one-stop shop for all connections to film, video and multimedia industry resources. OCFO wants to provide companies and citizens with a positive film production experience. Film Office goals are to facilitate productions in Otero County and to promote its cities and communities as film locations and increase economic impact countywide.

Holloman AFB & White Sands Missile Range

Our city is closely linked to Holloman Air Force Base. Holloman is just six miles southwest on the U.S. Highway 70 and is a unique national asset. With more than 52,000 miles, Holloman is an exciting, evolving center of research, development, cutting- edge technology and combat power. It’s history dates back to 1942 as a WWII Bomber training base. Since 1947, Holloman has been a center of research and development. Its contributions to America’s space programs are legendary, such as the training of America’s first two astronauts, chimpanzees Ham and Enos. Among its unique facilities are the world’s premier, record-setting, high-speed test track; a powerful centrifuge; the Air Force’s central storage facility of materiel for equipping bases in remote locations; and a national radar cross-section lab. The economic and cultural impact of Holloman AFB on Alamogordo and the surrounding area is massive. Holloman AFB is the largest single employer in the area. Around 11,000 people make up the daytime population at base. Its Economic Impact Statement estimates that the base contributes $411,743,040 to the economy through payroll, job creation, and contract expenditures. Holloman AFB recently added two F-16 units, representing an increase of 200-400 employees, and had a mission change converting aircraft maintenance to contract employees, resulting in 600 additional employees. Increasing the number of civilian employees and their dependents represents an increase in spending and tax dollars for the City.

White Sands Missile Range

White Sands Missile Range, located west of White Sands Missile Range 47 miles from Alamogordo, is the premier test range in the world. The Army installation range is committed to testing for government agencies, the Department of Defense and both private entities and foreign countries. The Range covers two million acres (3200 square miles).

The Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), Patriot, Army Tactical Missile System and the Theater High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD) are tested at the range on a regular basis. Also located on the Range is Trinity Site, where the world’s first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945. McDonald ranch house, where the plutonium core was assembled, remains at the site. Trinity Site is open for public viewing on the first Saturday in April and the first Saturday in October. “Since taking command of Holloman in July of 2018, the city of Alamogordo has been exceptionally welcoming to my family and me, providing the same great hospitality as seen by Holloman’s 10,000 service members, civilian employees and their families. Alamogordo and Holloman have a long history of mutual support and cooperation. OF THE YEAR Teresa Ham??? This year’s honored citizen was born in a small town near Columbia, SC, and grew up in Savannah, GA. She received her nursing diploma at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, GA in 1966, and after 25 years of nursing, decided to return to college, to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from New Mexico State University. One of the delights of her life was graduating with her degree, the same day as her daughter graduated with her degree. That was a special day! She worked at MD Anderson in Houston, TX, while putting her husband through medical school at Baylor College of Medicine. Moving to Holloman AFB in 1972, they quickly came to love the area and the people who lived here. They temporarily left Alamogordo to live in Los Angeles, while her husband completed his residency, but returned in 1976 to help establish the Alamogordo Eye Clinic. That busy clinic remains today as the Fillmore Eye Clinic. Alamogordo residents were delighted to have eye care and cataract surgery without having to travel out of town! Later, in the mid 80’s, the couple established the very first “Outpatient” Cataract Surgery Center in New Mexico. There she was the head nurse, manager of the practice, O.R. supervisor, and jack of all trades, all while raising a family.

Part of the Rotary Club’s Mexico Medical/Dental Project for 12 years, she assisted the doctors on trips to many remote places in Mexico. They provided much needed eye care to those in desperate need. She learned to speak Spanish and even obtained a pilot’s license in order to help the team. From 1989 to 1991, she was a section chief at the Royal Hawaiian Eye Meeting, in charge of training over 300 medical assistants.
