The Formation and History of the Pauline B. Grant Status of Women Department
It was at the 15th QuadrennialAssembly of the Women’s Missionary Council that convened in Charlotte, North Carolina July 2003 when a resolution was passed to change the name of the Status of Women Department to the Pauline B. Grant Status of Women Department. This honor was bestowed under the presidency of Dr. Judith E. Grant.
As a trailblazer and advocate for women, Mrs. Pauline B. Grant served as the fifth President of the Women’s Missionary Council and championed advocacy for women of all age groups. As an Ecumenist and Missionary leader, she envisioned and encouraged women to reach for the top while serving or working in Religious, Non-Profit, Corporate, and Entrepreneurial positions. She urged women of the C.M.E. Church to serve as delegates to national and international meetings and to participate in making policies for effective leadership goals. As a motivator and educator, she advanced the role of women in a global society. She encouraged young women to use their talents to become committed leaders. She inspired all women that she encountered to display their gifts and graces to further uplift the kingdom of God.
Crystal Lewis was elected the tenth PBG Status of Women Secretary at the19th QuadrennialAssembly held in July 2019. Sister Lewis is also a visionary building upon the solid foundation laid by Mrs. Pauline B. Grant and the past secretaries. The Committee immediately began to work toward achieving departmental goals and initiatives. The Committee decided to observe International Women’s Day and held the first Celebration in March 2021, wherein Region Presidents were honored. In 2022, the second Observance featured the female aspirants for bishop. In 2023, the Celebration honored the First Ladies of the Episcopal Class of 2022, Judicial Council member, Dr. Terri Dyer, and paid special tribute to Dr. Theresa Duhart.

ADRIENNE C. SPEAS
Missionary Region President Carolina Region
7th episcopal District
Adrienne C. Speas spearheaded many events at St. John CME Church which brought the church exposure in the community. During the pastorate of Rev. Bobby R. Best (the late Bishop Bobby R. Best), Adrienne organized a community parade. Bands from local schools, the Winston Salem State University band, and local youth Drill Teams led the parade from the church throughout the nearby communities. Rev. Bobby Best and Mrs. Jacqueline Best and their children were introduced to nearby communities as they rode atop decorated cars. The parade culminated at the church where community leaders, including the Mayor and other dignitaries Spoke. Local Gospel Choirs performed and many food stations prepared by members fed those present. Perhaps the greatest display of Sister Speas’ love for the church and people was shown when she served eight years as the 7th President of the Carolina Region. Her leadership skills, creativity, and monetary contributions reached new heights during the Lena Jones Rice Missionary Marches throughout her tenure. Many do not know how often Sister Speas visits the sick & shut-ins, assists with driving persons to doctor’s appointments, purchases needed personal items, donates clothing or just assist those in nursing facilities with grooming.

Mrs. Sarita Hafford-DeMoss - Region President
She is a member and Vice President of the Missionary Society at the oldest black church in Nashville, Tennessee, Capers Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Mrs. Whitney worked for the Metropolitan Board of Education Nutrition Services during a very special time in Nashville history, during the pandemic. Her responsibility was simple, “to feed the children”! The Pandemic was very brutal for many families and Mrs. Whitney along with other Metro staff provided breakfast and lunches to families with 2-3 kids or more. They provided meals even into the summer until the kids were able to return to the school’s full time. Buses and or parents would come to pick up prepared meals and take them to the homes. And if the parents could not make it, Mrs. Whitney would drive food to the families and place the food on the porches so that the families could eat. Servitude and love were definitely expressed during this time to these kids and to their families.

Our mother was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She is the eldest of six siblings. Laura has four children, five grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Mother was married to the late Rev. Erwin Heard. Some of her favorite things she enjoys are reading, exercising, walking and listening to music. In 2007, she worked on the campaign for President Barak Obama. Laura worked her way through college earning a BS in Secondary Education and a Master in Business Administration from Wayne State University. Through all of her accomplishments, the one thing she loves the most, beside her children, is the Lord and Womack Temple C.M.E. Church. At one point in time of mother's life, she was not financially able to tithe, but she did it in other ways devoting her time to Womack Temple. Through the years, she was church secretary, Sunday School Superintendent for eight years, Director of Christian Board of Education for ten years, Missionary President for eight years, and District Missionary Society secretary for four years. Laura was over the Holy Saturday Prayer Breakfast for several years and she was the person who started the Annual Missionary Hymn-O-Rama that has been going on for many, many years. Laura Heard is on several prayer lines and has been a Sunday school teacher for over fifty five years! This year, in 2023, she just passed the baton to someone else. One thing I can say about our mother is she is a faithful member of Womack Temple C.M.E. Church. When you drive over 45 miles one way through snow, rain, and/or sleet to worship at Womack; that is faithfulness. Just think of how many churches she passed just to get to Womack! Mother has been an awesome mentor, advisor and faithful member. To this Phenomenal, Virtuous woman that loves the Lord, we salute you. May God continue to Bless you Mom!

She was A virtuous woman, A dedicated wife, and the glue that bonded her family together. As a loving Mother she cared for not only her own children, but the community and neighborhood children also. She was well respected by everyone, and known as a God fearing woman. One of her Passions was Vacation Bible School. She would load her van with all the children on her block as well as surrounding blocks and any child that wanted to attend, and take them to church to learn about the Lord. Not only did she raise her children, but she adopted children and raised them in her home. And if her life wasn’t already busy, she made time to volunteer at Children’s Hospital while obtaining her degree. She had a passion for children and made sure every child she came in contact with felt loved and appreciated. Doris was known for exploring with her children and neighborhood children to adventures they could have never imagined. Many summers were spent going camping, attending plays, musicals, and traveling to many different states. She loved singing in the Church choir and served as the Church Secretary for many years. Doris was a devoted Sunday School Teacher and had a special gift of teaching children about the Lord. She served as a Missionary and supported all ministries in the church. Doris lived a life of service and has left a lasting legacy that is unmatched Her favorite scripture Proverbs 22:6 KJV –Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Annette was a very faithful Missionary. She walked in the footsteps of her mother Missionary Lucille Clark Wright, St. James CME church, Lumber City, GA. Annette genuinely loved and cared for all with a smile and right tone of voice. She prepared and delivered meals on wheels, served the sick and shut-in. Annette enjoyed cooking, exercising, gardening, learning, and sending cards for any occasion. She was a proficient Bookkeeper for the Richmond County schools. Annette had an article written for her accuracy at Lucy C. Laney High School in the Augusta Chronicle. Annette prayed for and loved her family and grandchildren. Gone but never forgotten. Love you Mom. Karen (daughter), Eric, Haven and Erin Searcy, Power of Good News Community CME Church, Lithonia, GA

Liz, as many of her friends and family members called her, was a hard church worker. She was a devoted woman who believed in helping others. She served as the secretary of the Central CME Church Missionary Society as well as the secretary for the MichiganIndiana Region Missionary Society for many years. She loved music and sang in the choir and served as a Stewardess.
Liz was a very frank person, so she had no problem telling you just what she thought, but yet in a nice way. If she thought things were right she told you but also if she thought things were wrong she told you that as well.
Her favorite scripture of which she repeated often is “Vengeance is mine says the Lord, I will repay” which is found in Romans 12:19.
You are not forgotten, Loved One
Nor will you ever be, As long as life and memory last We will remember thee, We miss you now, our hearts as sore As time goes by we’ll miss you more
Your loving smile, Your gently face, No one can fill Your vacant place.
