What more can we do?

Excerpt from An Essential Role, An Essential Site: A Palm Sunday Meditation by Sr Bishop L. L. Reddick

“. . . We can make ourselves essential to the parents of children we know or who we have been around us. Many of them are challenged with children at home now needing to be home schooled and guided. At the least, we can check on them, encourage them, thereby raising the spirits of care givers who may be otherwise exhausted, and just glad to know that they are thought about.

As I asked, in conversation with another bishop, “What more can we do?” he told me of the church in his district – the Allen Metropolitan CME Church in Chicago, Illinois – and said that they have been classified officially as “an essential site.” He added, “They provide meals for children, elderly, as well as the patients and staff at a community hospital. They are soon to use their parking lot for a virus testing site [and] they sign people up for utility assistance.”

Obviously, Allen Metropolitan and Pastor David Bryant asked the question, “What can we do to be essential?” long before this coronavirus came along. Jesus had foresight to see them, just as Jesus saw the donkey and her colt – a colt “on which no one had sat” – and told his disciples, “Untie them.” Allen Metropolitan has been untied.

Imagine today – while you are stretching to see how you can reach your people in this “shut in” time, while you are doing more than you thought you could do, using technology that you were afraid to use – imagine what ministries you can start when this is over so that you, too, will be declared “an essential site”.”

Lawrence Reddick In our Passover days, 21st Century communication keeps the blood of the Lamb over our thresholds. Our preachers and teachers are electronically bringing to our remembrance that the Passover Lamb of God covers and protects us, I Cor. 5:7. As the ‘death plague’ (Coronavirus) passes over stay inside, ‘take low, saw wood, and plan’ (Miss J. B. Wilson, 1906 GC Memphis).

When we emerge the marginalized will be epidemic. (the women and girls, children, youth, victims of human trafficking; unemployed people, people of low socioeconomic status; immigrants, refugees, and migrants, people of a particular ethnicity/country of origin; developmentally delayed, physically disabled, or mentally ill people; incarcerated people (and their families), people released from incarceration; and people with a differing political orientation. Matthew 25:35-36).

The answer to the call ‘whom shall I send’ will be urgent. In the meantime we do what we can as safely as instructed by the COVID-19 sources—the CDC, NIH, WHO, and others.

On a lighter note it’s back to basics—more kitchen time, diy beauty and barber shops, salons and parlors, more Netflix and creative entertainment, homework for the whole household, etc., but it’s all good! Especially if we are able to remember the barbers, beauticians, and others by sending a tip! ‘til we get back!

The President Speaks Greetings Missionaries:

May is the fifth month of the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and the third of seven months to have a length of 31 days. It is the third and last month of the season of Spring.

The birthstone of May, the Emerald, symbolizes success and love. May was once considered a bad luck month to get married.

The month of May is named after Maria, the Roman Goddess of Fertility, and it’s a month that celebrates the blossoming buds of flowers as nature prepares itself for Summer.

Mothers Day is one of the most celebrated holidays of the year. It is an annual holiday celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Mothers Day recognizes mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well as the positive contributions that they make to society.

It was established by Anna Jarvis, with the first official Mothers Day celebrated at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia on May 10, 1908. Americans spend approximately $2.6 billion on flowers, $1.53 billion on pampering gifts, like spa treatments and another $68 million on greeting cards.

The most traditional Mothers Day flower is the carnation. Pink represents gratitude and love, red represents admiration and white carnations are given or displayed in remembrance of a mother who is deceased.

Mothers Day is May 10, 2020. Attend church with your Mother and wear a white carnation. Go out to dinner and purchase a beautiful gift for your Mother. Place a bouquet of flowers on her grave if she’s no longer with you. We are all praying that the Coronavirus is gone on Mothers Day.

Proper and good education is very important and a must. It facilitates quality learning through life among people of all age groups, creeds, religions, regions, etc. It is the process of achieving knowledge, values, skills, beliefs, and moral habits; and effective ways of communicating the same.

Leadership involves establishing a clear vision, and sharing that vision with others so they will follow willingly. In order to ensure that the vision becomes a reality, leaders must be clear and articulate in their communication, while providing relative and current information, shared knowledge and proposed methodology for accomplishing the task associated with the vision.

Fall 2019 School Update LaBoris D. Perry

Greetings!

To the Women’s Missionary Council of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. I am writing this letter to you all to serve as an update on my current college experience. My first year of college at THE Illustrious Alabama State University has been going great! My classes are going great as well as my grades. Due to me taking some of my dual enrollment classes in high school, I am ahead of the game a little bit and already starting to take some of my sophomore year courses.

I have involved myself with one of the organizations on campus which is the Alabama State University Mighty Marching Ho r ne t Band. Being in the band has exposed me to a lot of opportunities such as being able to perform at an Atlanta Falcons football game and more to come.

I am still in constant contact with my church family at Bailey Tabernacle CME and I make sure that I visit them every chance when I go home.

Again, I am so thankful for this opportunity that you all have given me, and I pray continually that God blesses you all.

Senior Missionary on the move, writing second book

“Encouraging Stories and Essays” Mrs. Jessie Lourine Crockett, a member of the Women’s Missionary Society has written many articles through the years for the Missionary Messenger.

Today’s older adults are redefining what it means to be a senior. They are more demanding in where, when, and how they spend their retirement years.

Presently in her golden years she continues writing. In a variety of ways, representing both avocation and service, Jessie writes for an areas’ seniors group called Pensters, for her CME Church, and for local newspapers.

Author Crockett has always loved to write since exploring word building, especially poetry, as a young girl in WinstonSalem, North Carolina where she lives.

With chapters titled A Work of Art and Heart, Standing in Line and Standing in Need, A Spark, A Flame, A Fire, and The Beat Goes On—Crockett says this book is inspired by God, people, memories, everyday incidents, and experiences. Being observant has given her insight and helps her write with sincerity. Her poetic expressions will bring smiles to all. Friends and family members have been giving her positive feedback so far, often times telling her they can’t put the book down.

Once again, she has attempted to carry the reader to the places or times of which she writes. Her hope is that this book will be as enjoyable and inspirational as her first book, Expressions from the Heart.

The Coronavirus has hit and impacted the world globally. It literally has gone “viral” meaning something that spreads rapidly through a population by being frequently shared with a number of individuals. The numbers continue to grow quickly and exponentially. The state and local authorities are increasingly ordering their residents to stay at home as a strategy to mitigate the pandemic. The fear of the unknown and uncertainty over how long we’ll have to resort to limiting our daily lives, fear of contracting COVID-19, worry about the financial impact to our households, and viewing 24/7 media coverage has heightened feelings of anxiety, depression and isolation.

Each day the number of cases and deaths continue to climb. Tests, supplies, and personal protective equipment are limited. Healthcare workers have become soldiers on the front line in the war against the pandemic. The Coronavirus does not discriminate on ethnicity, age

Stress can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior. Stress that is not managed, can cause health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Effective stress management helps you break the hold stress has on your life so you can live happier, healthier, and be more productive. It is important to experiment and find out what works best for you because everyone is not the same.

There are several things you can do to manage your anxiety and fears, but I will focus on four.

check the news. It is important to stay informed so you can follow the advised safety precautions and do your part to slow the spread of the virus. Be cautious of misinformation that only feeds your fear.

Focus on the things you can control. There are so many questions and scenarios that might occur which can leave you feeling drained, anxious and overwhelmed. Shift your focus to things you can control and take slow deep breaths until you feel calmer.

Stay connected—even when physically isolated. During this time of social distancing, it is important to stay in touch with friends and family. Text, schedule phone calls, Skype or FaceTime dates, and utilize social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, or YouTube.

Take care of your body and spirit. Be sure to practice self-care during these unprecedented times. Although you may be under “stay at home” or “shelter in place” orders, try to maintain your normal schedule or routine. Do activities you enjoy like reading a book, cooking, crafts, games, and exercise.

Remember prayer changes things and God is in control. Practice hygiene and sanitation guidelines set by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Be safe and stay home.

MISSIONARY EDUCATION STUDY COURSE 2020-2021

Brown Memorial CME Church I attended a few days of the 2020 Women’s Missionary Council Executive Board Conference hosted in Atlanta, Georgia from February 25-28 (dates I was present). I was on a mission to help provide support and to be a generational guide for my aunt during the Thelma J. Dudley Missionary Education Presentation.

I was super excited, nervous and anxious that the day my aunt, the Missionary Institute Directors and I planned for was finally here. The education presentation held a special place in my heart because I come from a long line of educators and also work in a university setting, so I know the importance of being a lifelong learner, and I was happy to join in. I wanted it to be perfect, not for me but for my aunt (Ida Suggs) who I know dedicates her life to the service of others.

It had started months before the presentation, when one day I was visiting with my aunt at her house

where we often have lengthy conversations about almost anything. But on this day while visiting, she asked me a very specific question, “Ashley, what can us ‘old folks’ do to make your generation interested in the church again?” She then said, “The reason why I ask is because I would like to put some of those ideas into a presentation I am giving.” I thought about the question, even asked myself, “What is it that my generation likes?”

Then I began to name several things I thought she might be interested in: Vision Boards, TEDtalks, using technology (Podcast), etc. My aunt, as she always does, began to write them all down and from there her journey became our mission.

I knew the presentation itself had two main focuses: the skit and the presentation on the study guides.

My main focus was on the study guides being sure to make a “generational connection” to the material. Conversations between my aunt and I continued as we discussed the meaning of each book, what it might offer to the audience, and how we could expand on some of the ideas within the book. What I want my aunt to know (one of the biggest takeaway) is that we do not have to do this all ourselves…that is what GOOGLE is for.

Some of the overall themes from the book were: growth, development, acceptance, and perseverance.

The whole purpose of the mission is to provide information for every age group of the local church which is where the “study, the learning, discussion, sharing, and

the understanding take place. Keeping that in mind, I know that Millennials - Z generation like information that is quick, easy, and at our fingers tips. Using such things like a streaming platform (i.e. Podcast or YouTube) would serve as perfect tools to help blend such generations together. The ideas were not only ‘can you read the book’ but you could ‘use the platforms (i.e. Podcast or YouTube)’ to find supplemental materials/videos to help continue the conversations and engage the younger ones.

We also noticed that goal-setting was another point of emphasis from each of the study guides and dedicated to incorporating the activity for making vision boards. The concept derives from the practice of visualization – the art of creating clear, colorful and compelling pictures in your mind of exactly what it is you want. In the same way that you can visualize just one goal or spend time visualizing all your goals, the same is true in creating your board. Rather than being a picture of your goal or goals in your mind’s eye, it is a hard copy, physical picture.

Once the presentation was over I truly felt valued and heard. I found that people wanted more ways of how to connect and even felt inspired to ask a younger person in their life to help them. But most importantly I think my aunt was proud! Everything she had worked and planned for came full circle. Everyone enjoyed it and I was happy to be part of it! We want to continue to close the gap as we continue on this journey and learn from one another. Ω

TJD MESSENGER MISSIONARY EDUCATION INTRODUCES APRIL

RECOMMENDED BOOKS Ida Prewitt Suggs Secretary Missionary Education Wednesday, February 26, 2020, 8:40 am, the TJD Missionary Education Department rolled out the Study Books for the 2020-2021 year. After many conference calls, searching bookstores and the internet, and other booksellers, the books were decided upon and introduced to the 300+ persons in attendance. This presentation was made possible with the help and positive support of the Department Secretaries along with the Missionary Institute Directors. The selection of the books went through a process that included monthly conference calls, discussions, and a final vote was taken to ensure that voices were heard and recognized in making the final decision.

The month of May has several special days of celebration and recognition. These days include May Day, graduation day for institutions of higher learning and some high schools, birthdays for those of us born on one of the month’s 31 days, Memorial Day, and probably the day observed by almost everyone in the USA, Mothers Day.

As I reflect on the significance of this day, I am in awe as to how God gives each mother a unique child or unique set of children. Some mothers have been blessed with physically and mentally healthy children. Others have been blessed with children who are mentally and/or physically challenged. There are mothers whose children grew up to be socially successful adults who continued in their faith journey. While other mothers have children who have strayed away from God and are not making positive contributions to society. There are even mothers who have been blessed to have a child who fits into each of these scenarios.

You are probably saying ‘how can one call a mother who has a child with challenges or a child who has challenged all the rules blessed?’ She is blessed because no matter the physical, mental, moral, ethical, or spiritual status of her child or children, we know from Jeremiah 29:11 this was God’s plan for His daughter.

God’s plan for every mother is to love, nurture and “train up her offspring in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Yes, every mother has been woven into God’s plan before she even knew she would be a mother.

God’s plan also called for children to laud praise on their mothers. One way we laud praises on our mothers is to celebrate them on Mothers Day. So to every mother who has endeavored to carryout God’s plan whether you gave birth or assumed the responsibilities, kudos! And may your Mothers Day be filled with accolades from each of your children!

Thought of the month: Each day of this month take time to remember something special about your mother.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for weaving into your tapestry my loving mother and all the women of wisdom who influenced my life. I am grateful for their love, nurture, and prayers, and for starting me on my Christian journey. Amen.

LBM CIRCLE MET THE NEED The Leora B. Myers Missionary Circle of Trinity CME Church Indianapolis IN, discussed what we would do for our outreach in our June 2019 meeting. It was decided that we would do a "sock project" which would consist of donating women's socks with toiletries inside the socks.

We reached out to the Wheeler Mission Shelter for Women & Children by email and waited for a response. The representative emailed back and said that they always receive an abundance of socks and toiletries but were in dire need of new women's underwear. We responded and said that our circle would comply and donate new underwear. We made arrangements for the representative to attend our worship services on Sunday September 29, 2019 to pick up the donated underwear. This gave us three months to ask for and collect the donations. We asked our church members, family members, and friends to donate. The response was great.

On September 29, 2019, Tammy Caldwell, the engagement manager for Wheeler Mission Center attended our worship services and we donated a U-Haul moving box that contained over 250 pairs of new underwear, all sizes, for women.

It was during Tammy's acceptance speech that she told us that several churches that their agency works with are known for donating one particular item year-round, but they did not have an "underwear" church.

She asked if we could become a sponsor by donating underwear year-round. Our circle gladly accepted the task and told her we would collect new underwear, all sizes, every quarter and make the donations.

On December 15, 2019, we delivered a U-Haul moving box that contained 194 pairs of new underwear.

This go-round one church member, who is not active in the WMS, truly blessed us by donating over 95 pairs of new underwear to our missionary circle. Tammy was very excited to receive this second round of underwear and stated that the underwear donations are truly a blessing.

As people we take the smallest things for granted such as underwear. We assume that everyone has access to underwear which is an essential needed for daily living. We must always remember that just because we have necessary items for daily living, not everyone is as fortunate. There are people who struggle daily just to obtain basic necessities. I am so thankful that our circle saw a need and accepted the call to answer. It is my hope that our next quarter of giving will triple what we gave this quarter.

African Haitian Jamaican Festival Program Saturday, February 9, 2020

The WMS of Greenwood-Jackson District hosted the African, Haitian and Jamaican Festival Program Saturday February 9, 2020 Pastor Danny Willis and First Lady Mrs. Rose Willis and members of Washington Temple CME Jackson MS hosted the annual event.

Committee members Sandra Berry, Faye Foster, Frances Sanders, and Vanessa Keys did an excellent job planning and executing the event.

It included the history, culture and food of Uganda through a display of pictures. Bethel CME and Pastor Jeffery Powell and the local Missionary President, Doris Powell, presented the history, culture, and food of Haiti.

Jennings Temple CME’s presentation was done by local Missionary President Charlene Flagg, District Vice President Ruth Gillian, and Ruth Jones. They presented a pictorial display on the history, people, and culture of Zimbabwe.

The host church, Washington Temple CME represented Egypt. The Rossie T. Hollis, Mattie E. Coleman, Phyllis H. Bedford, and adults presented a display of artifacts from Egypt. There was a discussion on the history and culture of the country. The Adults sang a song native to Egypt.

Little Bethel CME, whose Pastor is Rev. Dr. James Loftin, represented by members of the Rossie T. Hollis department and Local President Mrs. Gealean Gibson did a presentation of the Country Tanzania; the history, culture, foods, and a display pictures.

St. Paul of Bentonia CME, Pastor Nathaniel Lias, represented by local President Mrs. Bobbie Blanche and the children of the Mattie E. Coleman and Rossie T. Hollis Departments, presented an African dance, culture, foods and History.

Young Chapel CME, Pastor Johnnie Smith, was represented by Mattie E. Coleman and Rossie T. Hollis Departments, and local President Ms Peggy Samuel. Their presentation was on the Country Rwanda, its history, culture, picture display, and foods. The children had a Q&A session for the congregation on the country of Rwanda.

Overseas Mission Ministry The Missionaries of the NCA Region provide donations and supplies to Overseas Missions and Haiti Ministries. The Huntsville District and Tuscaloosa District Societies made 430 Pillowcase Dresses for Haiti families.

Memorial Gift in Honor of Corey Justin Kirk We, the members of St. James CME in Jasper, Alabama, are deeply humbled by the magnanimous gift of support received from Cynthia Kirk, daughter of the late Sarah Farris, a former Annual Conference WMS President, and her son-in-law Johnny Kirk.

In a time of membership decline and financial challenges, this amount of $1500 given in memory of their son, the late Corey Justin Kirk, was such a blessing and truly a support of our ministries and obligations.

Seats at the Table for Women

Women make up essentially half of the world’s population, but hold an average of only 25 percent of positions in national parliaments around the world. In the United States, women are just 24 percent of the 116th Congress.

While both of these are the highest on record, they are clearly far from equal. Bread for the World argues that more women in political leadership positions would significantly advance the cause of ending hunger in the United States and around the world.

In 2015, Bread for the World wrote about how when women flourish, we can end hunger. We reported extensively on countries that reserve shares of seats in parliaments for women – more than 80 do so. In 2003, Rwanda set a quota of 30 percent for women in elected positions. By 2019, 61.3 percent of seats in Rwanda’s parliament were held by women—the world’s first female-majority legislature

Surviving the

Stay at Home

Most of us are caught in the middle of the tug-of-war that mandates us to stay at home while yet attempting to attend to those responsibilities that take us out of the home. I don’t know about you but trying to stay at home is a tough challenge! The good news is that we’re becoming accustomed to it and it seems that our staying more at home is working!

One of the challenges I had to address was the emotional burden borne from this crisis. Needing to keep up with the issues of the day required me to monitor reports from the various news outlets and the enormity of the pandemic and its associated impact on our economy added to my emotional burden. Like many others I too have had up days and down days. Yes, I’m admitting my humanity and the realization of the simple fact that this is a dangerous time that can only be faced with our faith.

However in my reflections, I remembered a 2017 news article in my hometown weekly newspaper drawn from the internet titled “Tips to help deal with burdens of life” and I thought I would share a few that might during such a “time as this” bring some reflective thought or humor to you as it did for me: • Drive carefully. It’s not just cars that can be recalled by their maker.

• Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.

• When everything’s coming your way, you’re probably in the wrong lane.

• • • • • • • • • •

Always keep you words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

Remember! It’s the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Never buy a car you can’t push.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue.

You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.

We can learn a lot from crayons… Some are pretty, some are sharp, and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors. But they all must live in the same box.

I hope these nuggets have been helpful. We may not be able to change the time in which we are living, but with a grounded faith and little humor, we can do something about the way in which we live. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me …

Editor Report Greetings, in the name of Almighty God, Father of our Savior Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit who is always with us.

In honor of black history month displayed on the PowerPoint is the African Diaspora map. The African Diaspora has a population of 140 million while Africa has a population of 1.2 billion. The most populated countries in the African Diaspora include Brazil, Colombia, America, Dominican Republic, and Haiti. There’s a connection among the descendants of slaves in the African Diaspora as their ancestors came from similar areas in Africa and survived a similar fate; slavery and colonization.

Essentially, they were taken to different countries around the world, disconnected from one another and their homelands—but, look at the children: Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Colombian, Afro-Dominican, Afro-American, and the refugee children of Darfur Sudan Africa—the connection among the descendants of slaves in the African Diaspora. Celebrate our heritage as often as possible.

I thank God for my capacity to serve Him, our Great Zion, and my missionary sisters and brothers as your editor of our historic magazine. Thank you for your faith and trust, your calls, greetings, and correspondence. All inspires me to work steadfastly for you while Glorifying our Lord.

I am very grateful for past editors who laid and built upon the Messenger’s solid foundation. Thank you Juliet Waddell Pittman for making my transition to editor seamless. I am thankfully beholden to you.

Thank you Bishop James B. Walker! Bishop Walker with his busy schedule said to me “I can do that,” when I asked him to contribute the cover story each month. One of the words for patron is donor. Thank you Patron Bishop for your generous donation of the Word each month.

I must recognize and thank God for Emma Reagor, Past President Oklahoma Region, for being there at the 11 th hour to help with each issue, readied for print. Thank you Emma. Thank you Karolyn Ruffin, my District President, and others across the regions for your articles and contributions.

I thank you all for blessing me with your prayers, encouragement, and especially for reading the Messenger! We all make our magazine great when we subscribe, contribute, publicize our works, and share our love for one another in the Messenger.

The Messenger is well, and will continue to be, with a few operational procedures put into place to expedite circulation.
