3 Special offer: microchipping reduced to £15!

AS you are probably aware by now, the microchipping of dogs will be compulsory in England in 2016. But what is microchipping and how can we all ensure that the system works?

A microchip is a tiny radio frequency device contained in a glass case, which is the size of a grain of rice. The microchip is implanted between the shoulderblades, and is read by a microchip scanner. When the chip is read, it gives a unique number (such as 9810000012345). The unique number is linked to the animals and owners' details on one of two databases in the UK: Petlog and Anibase.

Currently 60% of the 10.5 million UK dogs are microchipped, which still leaves over four million dogs to be microchipped in the next, three years.

So, what are the potential faults with microchips? The two, main issues are migration and failure. Migration is where the chip moves from its original location to elsewhere on the body and is more common in very thin-skinned, slender dog because the chip remains in place, owing to the body forming a reaction in the fat layer surrounding it and anchoring it in place.

However, a correct scanning technique should find a chip wherever it's located.

The other fault can be a microchip failure. Currently, it is reported that one in 10,000 microchips fail at some point in the life of the animal, so it is a rare event, but seems to be more common with cheaper brands of chips. The actual microchip costs the implanter anywhere from 99p. to £15, depending on the brand used, and you do get what you pay for, the cheaper chip brands have a higher rate of migration and failure, so it is worth ensuring that your dog is given a well-respected brand of chip, such as Tracer.

The main problem that we find, though, is people's failure to update their chip details. Dog wardens last year reported that 40% of the microchipped dogs they collected were unable to be reunited with their owners, due to out-of-date or incorrect details. After your dog is microchipped, you will receive a certificate with your pet's details on it and the contact-details that the database hold for you.

Keep this safe and ensure that, if you move house or change 'phone-number, you contact the database to update your details.

At Shiresvets, we also recommend that you ask us to check your dog's microchip every year at vaccination, and you can also ask us to check the database for you, should you need to double-check that the details are up-to-date.
