LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY DO YOU WANT ONE? Erase the the stress of coping with bills & accounts! THE vast majority of us do not like to think about the possibility of losing our mental capacity, and consider how we would cope with our financial affairs in that eventuality. It is, therefore, eminently prudent to look to the future and plan ahead, in order to ease the potential burden on your relative, should this occur - by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney.
An LPA is is a legal document that allows you to choose other people whom you wish to make decisions on your behalf, including a time when they you lack the requisite, mental capacity to do so. It is crucial that an LPA is 'completed' while you are still mentally capable, well before you require it. There are TWO types of LPA:* Property and financial affairs (allowing an attorney to make decisions about paying bills, dealing with the bank, collecting benefits, selling your house etc.). * Health and welfare (allowing decisions on treatment, care, medication, where you live etc.). An LPA allows you to plan in advance the decisions you want to be made on your behalf if/when you lose the capacity to make them yourself; the people you want to make these sales: 01782 461711
decisions; how you want the people to make these decisions. Having an LPA is a safe way of maintaining control over decisions made for you because: 1) It has to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used (if someone else tries to register if you and your attorney[s] will be able to make an objection); 2) You choose someone to provide a 'certificate' confirming that you understand the significance and purpose of it; 3) You can choose 'people to be told' about your LPA when it is registered (so that they have an opportunity to raise concerns); 4) Your signature, and the signatures of your chosen attorneys must be witnessed; 5) From a legal perspective, your attorney(s) must follow the code of Practice of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 - if they don't always act in your best interests, the OPG can step in, and your attorneys(s) may be held accountable; 6) The OPG provides helpful support and advice.
DO YOU NEED A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY If you ‘lose capacity’ all of your financial arrangements will be ‘locked’. even those you held jointly. your bank and other institutions have no choice but follow the rules mCA and deny your spouse/family access to your accounts. to ‘unlock’ your accounts, and also be able to sign and act on your behalf someone has to either produce a previously arrange LPA or make an application to the Court of Protection. An application to the Court is neither cheap (£2,000 to £3,000 are typical) or quick (3-4 months) and this is no guarantee of success. the Court may reject your families application and instead appoint a local deputy (a local solicitor) who will take over all of your finances. From your estate, the deputy will deduct all court fees as well as his own fees and expenses, which in some cases has been known to run into £1000’s

CONTENTS DECEMBER 2015 11. Spectacular vocalist, Michael Brooks, is entertaining at Kidsgrove Labour Club on Monday, December 7th. He first realised his ability to sing at the age of eight, and began his professional career, when he joined forces with a fellow college student, and created the duo. Two in Harmony, which enjoyed great success, performing predominantly in and around the Midlands. In 1999, Michael joined Masquerade, a Carpenter tribute show on a national tour, performing as a backing vocalist. It wasn't long before his talent was recognised, and he was asked to be a 'front man' for his own show, Motown Magic, which, to this day, is still touring holiday circuits, theatres and large venues nationwide to great acclaim. 13. The ever-popular British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra brings a flavour of Christmas in Vienna to Crewe's Lyceum Theatre to get the festive season off to a flying start! The evening of music by the great Strauss family, with waltzes, songs and tunes that will live forever. There will be performances of 'The Blue Danube', Klipp Klapp Polka, Champagne Polka, Thunder & Lightning Polka, Radetsky March and many more. The concert is spiced up with music from other great Viennese composers, including Lehar, Kalman, Romberg and Stolz (The White Horse Inn', 'The New Moon', 'Die Fledermaus', 'The Merry Widow', 'The Gipsy Baron', plus 'O Holy Night', 'Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer', 'Chestnuts Roasting on An Open Fire (The Christmas Song)'. The Gala takes place on Sunday, December 6th. 24. Roberts' Bakery Band will be raising the roof at Tatton Park, in Cheshire, this Christmas, and coking up a seasonal selection of brass band music. Its concert in the stately home on Saturday, December 12th, is just one of a number of attractions. Guaranteed to banish those 'Winter Blues', Tatton's concert series has long established itself as one of the highlights of the festive season, making fantastic Christmas presents for friends and loved ones. The Northern Chamber Orchestra will be commencing festivities with an evening of classical Yuletide favourites and carols on Thursday, December 10th. Acclaimed trio in Newcastle THE much-lauded Moricosta String Trio is appearing at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre on Wednesday, January 27th, 2016. Internationally-acclaimed musicians, Lucy BakerStockdale (violin), Steven Burnard (viola) and Jessica Burroughs (cello), met at the BBC Philharmonic, and are all in great demand as chamber and orchestral performers, and as soloists. Since their inaugual concert in January, 2013, the Trio regularly performs at venues around the UK, including Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, and Blackheath Halls, London. They are currently Selected Artists for the Making Music Concert Promoters' Group 2015/16 season.

Shining talent MICHAEL Brooks brings his nationally-recognised talent to the stage of Kidsgrove Labour Club on Monday, December 7th. Michael first realised his singing-ability at the tender age of eight, and in 1999, joined 'Masquerade', a Carpenters tribute show, on a nationwide tour, performing as a leading vocalist. It wasn't long before his talent was seen to exceed by far that of being a mere backing-singer, and he was asked to be a 'front man' for his own show, 'Motown Magic', which, to this day, is still touring holiday circuits, theatres and large venues nationwide, to great acclaim.

Christmas in Burslem, Tunstall & Alsager Myriad festive attractions!! LOCAL residents and shoppers are looking forward to a 'night of entertainment', which will be taking place in Tunstall's iconic Tower Square on Friday, December 11th. This event replaces the annual Christmas Lights Switch-On ceremony (which fell on Friday, November 14th last year), held by Tunstall Chamber of Trade. The December 11th event has been jointly organised and funded by Tunstall Events Group and Stoke-on-Trent City Council, and the Tower Square will boast a Christmas tree and festive lights. Verity Hilton, widow of popular radio presenter and DJ, Sam Plank, will launch the proceedings, and the evening's attractions will include the jolly gentleman in red, Santa Claus, himself and a variety of entertainers. Readers can enjoy Christmas in historic style at Ford Green Hall, Smallthorne, on Sunday, December 13th, between 11am and 4pm. 'Christmas at the Hall' offers you the chance to visit the early-17th century farmhouse, and

On Friday, November 27th, 6 Towns Radio hosted this year's Christmas Lights Switch-On in neighbouring Burslem at 6pm, with the fun in Swan Square commencing an hour earlier at 5pm. Myriad activities for the whole family included a children's party, a short nativity play and, of course, an opportunity to meet (and enjoy a singalong with) Father Christmas, who was, needless to add, accompanied by his reindeers and attendant fairies! 'Doing the honours' at 6pm was Kevin Oakes, and live entertainment on the Swan Square stage was also provided. The event was organised by a team from 'Our Burslem' Community Group.
The annual festive show features mulled wine and mince pies, plus raffle-prizes, and takes place at St. Mary's Church, Alsager, with tickets by donation at the door. Alsager Civic is playing host to The Kaiser Monkey Killers Christmas Party Night on Saturday, December 12th, with tributes to The Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Coldplay, The Fratelles, Kasabian, Kings of Leon, The 1975, The Vaccines and Franz Ferdinand, commencing at 7.30pm; tickets are priced at £20 (including a hot supper and DJ).

'Messiah' launches the festive season The next concert in the Stoke-on-Trent Festival 2015/6 at Hanley's Victoria Hall features the most famous of works by Britain's favourite, adopted German, George Frideric Handel (1685-1759),
performed by the Armonico Consort. First performed in Dublin in 1742, Handel's 'Messiah' is arguably, the world's best-loved and greatest oratorio, with its inspirational text and an astounding collection of wonderful melodies. Armonico Consort's five-starrated choir and critically-acclaimed musicians will be playing instruments of the period to create the very finest start to the Christmas season. Armonico's founder and Artistic Director, Christopher Monks, is a dynamic and innovative conductor and keyboard-player; in addition to work for the group, he has conducted ensembles, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia and the European Union Chamber Orchestra. NORTHWICH-based Roberts' Bakery Band will perform on Saturday, December 12th.
ROBERTS' Bakery Band will be raising the roof at Tatton Park, in Cheshire, this Christmas and cooking up a seasonal selection of brass band music. Its concert in Tatton's stately Tenants' Hall on Saturday, December 12th, is one of a number Christmas concerts taking place this year. Guaranteed to banish those 'Winter Blues', Tatton's concert series has long established itself as one of the highlights of the festive season, making fantastic Christmas presents for friends and loved ones. On Thursday, December 10th, the Northern Chamber Orchestra, joined by St. Nicholas Catholic High School Choir, conducted by Helen McKenna, will be getting the festivities off to a sparkling start with an evening of classical, Christmas favourites (including Corelli's Christmas Concerto, 'Winter' from Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons', Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and The Dargason by Holst), along with carols and festive songs and a poem or two, read by compère, Karen Millward. This is followed on Friday, December 11th, by a new production by Arty-fact Theatre, 'A Christmas Carol', commencing at 6pm, when visitors can bring the whole family to meet Charles Dickens, telling his well-loved story, with puppets and actors; the author will be joined by some scary and lots of funny and
familiar characters. On Saturday, December 12th, an evening of brass brand music by Roberts' Bakery Band is, for many, the highlights of their run-up to Christmas. This is the eighth time that the Northwich-based , internationally-touring band will treat the audience to a repertoire of classical, traditional and popular music. Said Tatton Park Events manager, Rachel Morris: "This year, our mix of festive music and theatre performances is sure to provide something to suit the whole family. "We love this time of year here at Tatton; the combination of the beautifully-decorated mansion and the festive atmosphere created by the fantastic musicians and actors really brings the building to life. Another Christmas memory to treasure!" All concerts take place in the Tenants' Hall of Tatton's stunning neo-classical mansion.
