Bluebells in Bergholt There are bluebell woods all over Hertfordshire and Essex so it might seem silly to drive for an hour to West Bergholt near Colchester, but it’s worth it. Hillhouse Wood is small but perfectly formed with flowering valleys and clear steams, nightingales, woodpeckers, patches of wild garlic and – of course – bluebells.

For a short, sweet walk take the path from end of Firmins Court across fields to St Mary’s old church just outside West Bergholt village. The church is open every day and serves tea and cakes to visitors for an annual “Bluebell Weekend” in April.

Take lane beside church and follow it left to wood’s main entrance.

There are many paths through Hillhouse, where getting lost in May is a pleasure; one scenic route is to fork left near pond, through valley, and follow any way-marked path through woods until all ways converge to cross two little bridges and climb up to gate in SE corner of wood. Follow path ahead along edge of field. Reaching brick cottage, follow Cooks Hall Road past paddocks towards West Bergholt. Turn left at crossroads and go on over Lexden Road to find the unpretentious Queen’s Head pub, reflected in the village pond.

charity fundraising

scumrun: team flying mavericks Mark Stevenson and David Oliver are undertaking a rather unique challenge to raise funds for Together For Short Lives. A fantastic charity whose mission is to secure the best quality of life and best end of life care for children who will have short lives. Mark of Bishop’s Stortford and Dave of Dunmow are aiming is to raise over £3000 by taking part in the Scumrun charity car rally.

Their challenge is to by a car for less that £500, prepare it in as unique a way as possible and drive it 3000 miles around Europe in 5 days between May 11th and 15th. Each day they will be set a destination by the rally organisers with checkpoints along the way in front of which the car must be photographed. The cost of the car, car preparation, insurance, rally entry fee and travel costs are all completely met by Mark and Dave. All funds raised will be going to the charity.

The birchanger wood trust

What’s happening in the woods...

From time to time you have read little bits and pieces about our hedgehogs in the Birchanger Wood Compound. Their wooden hut is specially designed. Inside it has a separate sleeping area, which has to be regularly cleaned and refilled with suitable bedding material and the hut itself is directly connected to a large natural outside run. The Trust’s Warden works closely with Herts Hogline.

Hedgehogs had always lived in Birchanger Wood but, as with other swathes of our countryside and in many back-gardens, the population has seen a sharp decline over the last 10 years. As part of the Trust’s commitment to improving the biodiversity of Birchanger Wood, our Warden contacted the Herts Hogline, the local hedgehog rescue centre, to see if our ancient woodland could be repopulated. So, in conjunction with Herts Hogline, a purpose-built ‘forever’ home was installed into a quiet corner of the Birchanger Wood Compound.

Working with Hogline, several underweight hedgehogs, which would not make it through the winter hibernation without assistance, were placed into this secure environment and were fed and looked after, every day.

In Spring, when these hedgehogs achieved the necessary weight-gain, they were released into Birchanger Wood. In addition to underweight animals received from Hogline, there are now two disabled hedgehogs, which can never be returned to the wild, owing, to, the loss of a limb or an eye, as they would be unable to forage properly and in

consequence would be vulnerable to predators.

These hedgehogs will remain in their ‘hut and run’ in the Birchanger Wood compound’. They will hibernate there and never be released.

Hedgehogs are wild animals. They hibernate over winter. They are not pets. They are nocturnal and should not be disturbed during the day. Indeed, handling then can cause them a great deal of distress and can cause health issues. Those that are temporary residents, that is those due for release in Spring must not become tame, as they need to be afraid of humans, so they can survive in the wild.

The Trust is indebted to Herts Hogline and to all those local residents who regularly leave tinned dog and cat food for their meals - super-meat, or meat in jelly - please no gravy and no fishy meals.

Cat nuts are also great, but again, please no fish based ones. The food collection point is in the Birchanger Wood compound.

The Trust is also indebted the local shopkeeper at Snowley Parade who regularly donates income he receives from sales of poly-shopping-bags which supplements the donations of food and finances the costs of bedding, cleaning products and the occasional vet bills.

It’s a SLEEPOUT designed to raise awareness and funds for the Streets2Homes day centre for the homeless and vulnerably housed. We assist by helping with meeting basic needs and support to rebuild lives by accessing accommodation and improving opportunities.

This year’s event is taking place on 26th May and will take place in the church grounds of St Marys-atLatton, Harlow, CM20 2JP. All monies raised will go to Streets2Homes to support the homeless in Harlow and those that come to us from the surrounding area.

Unlike so many who find themselves on the streets, we have the luxury of being able to plan our Sleepout and make sure that we have all the provisions we need. We’ve drawn together a simple fact sheet about the event, to answer some questions should you wish to take part.

When does it start? The event starts at 9.30pm and will finish with a hot breakfast at 6.30am in the church hall.

Who can take part? Anyone over 18, anyone over 12 as long as a responsible adult who is present, supervises them and they also have their parent’s or guardian’s consent.

What to bring: Your registration form and your sponsorship form so that we can stamp to certify completion on Saturday morning. A sleeping bag or bags and blankets - bring more rather than

less! Wear warm clothing – layer up! Some like a cardboard-box (waterproofed) for over their head & a sleeping mat. A waterproof groundsheet or heavy plastic that goes both under & over you - vital!

What not to bring: Pets, a tent, a football, valuables & CDs, mp3’s or alcohol!

Timetable: 9.30-10.30pm - refreshments and introductions, 10.30-11pm - out to sleep, or the church will be open for prayer from 10.30 to 11pm.

Parking: There is ample parking around the church people park on the grassed areas around the church. But please, if possible, avoid parking outside people’s homes in The Gowers. There is also plenty of parking in Muskham Road leading to The Gowers.

What happens overnight? You sleep in the grounds.

Toilets will be open all night. Security will patrol.

What happens the next morning? You get up from 6.30am onwards, get your sponsorship form stamped, and, if you wish, have something to eat and drink, a breakfast will be provided. Remove cardboard etc. Leave nothing behind. Then go to a cosy home!!

What to do after that: Talk with friends and family about the experience, tell them about Streets2homes and collect your sponsorship money.

This event is not for everybody but you can still support us by following the live Facebook streams that we share as the night unfolds. Most importantly we would like your sponsorship, there is no minimum amount, every single penny is most gratefully received. Harlow sea welcome Aboard new recruits & helpers Did you know there has been a thriving sea cadet unit in Harlow for over 50 years?

We meet every Tuesday and Thursday. Junior Cadets 10-12, Sea Cadets 12-18 and Marine Cadets 13-18.

At the Remembrance Sunday Service in the Harlow Town Park last year, you would have seen our cadets proudly on parade. A central part of our calendar – taking part in the service is very important, the cadets get to show their community a face of local youth - many believe sadly to be missing these days.

One of our many aims is to try and install a greater sense of community within the cadets.

We passionately believe in our cadets, actively encouraging them to achieve their potential.

It’s the combination of Royal Navy tradition within a structured regime bringing together their energy and drive that has kept the unit going for over five decades. Our cadets go on to become many things in life, not necessarily anything to do with the military. Being a cadet

teaches our young people self-confidence, teamwork, better coping mechanisms and life skills.

In addition to learning Seamanship – our cadets get involved with five a side football, swimming, cooking, shooting, sailing, we also offer weekends away with other local and national units. In summer months they also participate in boating activities. There are also many weekend boating, swimming or camping activities too. We are also active out in the community; the cadets regularly help with events held by St Clare Hospice, Cancer Research and both Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford branches of the British Legion, helping to raise money for the local community.

As a charity we do not get financial help from the MOD so are self-funding. Fundraising is an important part of the unit management team’s job; it’s also one of the most fun. As well as welcoming new cadets we would really like to welcome new volunteers to strengthen our team

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING RICOTTA STUFFED CHICKEN

75g ricotta cheese 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 2 tsp finely grated lemon zest 4 large skinless chicken breast fillets 12 thin-cut rashers streaky bacon 5 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 1tsp Dijon mustard Pinch of sugar

This

recipe is a great way to turn chicken

fillets into something special.

You

can

prepare them a couple of hours in advance

100g baby spinach leaves

and keep covered in the fridge, then simply

2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

cook when needed.

1. Use a sharp knife to make a deep pocket in each chicken fillet, making sure not to cut right the way through. Place the ricotta cheese in a bowl and stir in the thyme leaves and the lemon zest. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

2. Place one-quarter of the ricotta mixture in the pocket of each chicken fillet. Use the back of a knife to stretch the bacon rashers. Wrap 3 rashers around each chicken fillet and secure with a metal skewer. Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C Fan, Gas Mark 4.

3. Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken fillets over high heat for 2-3 minutes until the bacon is browned, turning once. Transfer to a roasting tin and cook for 35-40 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Cover and leave in a warm place to rest for 10 minutes.

4. To make the dressing, whisk the remaining oil with the vinegar, mustard and sugar in a small jug and season to taste. Slice each chicken fillet into 6 pieces and arrange on the salad leaves. Scatter over the toasted pine nuts and spoon over the dressing. Serve immediately.

TIP: Instead of ricotta you could use low-fat soft cheese such as

Philadelphia or a mild and creamy goats’ cheese.

How did the group begin?

It began life in 1994 when Jim Peel, our teacher, retired from full time work and wanted something to do. Jim had an interest in art from an early age and studied the subject under Anthony Devas ARA, during his evacuation to Sawbridgeworth during WW2. (You can read more about Jim’s time as an evacuee from the book he wrote on the subject, extracts from which were published in CM17 Connection 10th anniversary edition 2005 – 2015.)

So Jim started the art group about 22 years ago and some of the original participants are still active in the group today.

What do you do?

We are essentially a Watercolour Class that learns about the basics of painting. Jim has a particular speciality in teaching about the rules of perspective, not only in the drawing but also in how colour affects the final result, for example warm colours for close subject matter, cooler colours for objects or scenery farther away.

We learn how to apply washes, wet on wet and wet on dry paper, depicting clouds and cloud formations, composition and the rule of thirds.

Also, we learn about the mixing of colours, the colour wheel, colours that are permanent and those that can be removed or reduced in effectiveness or removed altogether.

How does the group operate?

Each of us does our own thing in relation to what we paint with Jim offering advice on anything that we are having difficulty with.

Occasionally we will have a particular subject or a human model for us all to paint. Many of us

Do you exhibit your work?

In times past we have exhibited our work at Artists in the Square which, at one time gathered in the Harlow Town centre. Now we have our own exhibitions, twice annually, in the ARC lasting 2 -3 weeks, which is open to the general public. Often visitors will be invited to vote for the paintings they like best and from those votes we can see the sort of subject that appeals and a “Best in Show” winner.

Most years we produce a calendar that includes 40 to 50 paintings completed by the group.

From the sales of these calendars we are able to make a donation to the St Clare Hospice, for which they are very grateful.
