WELCOME

HELLO AND WELCOME to The june edition of the cm17 connection As I sat down to write this month’s letter it occurred to me that the magazine is now 14 years old! What was once the Church Langley Monthly serving just, well you guessed it, Church Langley, has evolved over the years to serve Hastingwood, Potter Street, Newhall and Old Harlow. We now deliver to 9k homes in the CM17 postcode area... and have a sister magazine covering the WHOLE of Stortford! This anniversary made me reminisce about why I started the mag all those years ago. I wanted a job that would accommodate the needs of my 18 month old daughter so it had to be flexible and also had to be fulfilling - my work in the corporate world had left me disillusioned, what ever I did I wanted to make a difference! And being my own boss meant that I didn’t have to bow down to the pressures of the “bottom line”. As long as I wasn’t in the red that was fine by me (and still is!). So, a time for reflection. I think the mags have set out to do exactly what I wanted them to do - provide me with flexible and rewarding work and I hope, provide the community with a useful resource that supports both local business and community groups. Thank you for being a part of the journey x Here’s this month’s new and returning customers: Barracudas Activity Day camps, Be Naturally Healthy, Garolla Garage Doors, Harlow Baptist Church, Pilates with Danielle Rubery, Newhall Primary Academy School & Nursery, the Rhys Daniels Trust, Samantha’s Beauty Retreat, Cllr Sue Livings, The Odd Fellows and last but by no means least, Top Hat Stage School! Welcome one and all and as always, thank you for choosing CM17! Until next month, Lorraine

ADVERTISING FEATURE

A Letter from Robert Halfon MP Robert Halfon MP Working Hard For Harlow Dear Readers, This past month, I’ve been working on a number of campaigns to help cut the cost of living for hardworking Harlow residents. As part of my ongoing campaign to keep fuel duty frozen and ensure that motorists are no longer hammered at the pumps, I’m working with other MPs, the Treasury and motorist organisation, Fair Fuel UK, to establish a fuel price watchdog, known as ‘Pump Watch’. At the moment, when oil prices rise, the cost of petrol and diesel rocket, but when oil prices fall, prices at the pump take a long time to go down. This is wholly unfair on motorists and is adding to the mounting cost of living. An independent regulator would bring an end to this and help keep fuel prices down. I’ve also been making preparations for my eighth annual Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair which will take place on Friday 13th September 2019 at the Harlow Leisurezone. The Jobs Fair will offer Harlow job seekers and students the chance to network with employers and find out more about current vacancies in the area. If you would like to attend, or know of someone that would be interested, please do spread the word! All the details are available on my Facebook page - just search for @RobertHalfon. I’m also looking for local businesses to sponsor and exhibit their opportunities at the Fair. So far, we have some incredible companies confirmed, including Google, Samsung, Amazon, Pearson, Barclays and loads more. It would be fantastic to have some more local businesses so please do get in touch if you’d like to be a part of the day, via email at halfon4harlow@roberthalfon.com. It’s completely free!

Robert Halfon MP and Stephen Hammond MP with staff at PAH

In May, we were privileged to be joined by the Health Minister at our Harlow hospital. Following my recent debate in Parliament on the need for a new health campus in Harlow, the Minister, Stephen Hammond MP, committed to visiting the Princess Alexandra NHS Hospital to see first-hand the problems we are facing. Our NHS staff are outstanding in the care that they provide, but the hospital was built in the 1950s and is in urgent need of renovation. That’s why, I’m keeping up the pressure for Government funding for our new hospital. The delays on Edinburgh Way have been going on for far too long. I’m working hard to get to the bottom of this, as works continue to prepare for the construction of the new Junction 7A on the M11. This month, I wrote to Councillor Kevin Bentley at Essex County Council, who oversees infrastructure in our area, asking for a clearer picture and timetable for the roadworks to be completed. All updates on this and more are posted on my social media channels: Facebook (@ RobertHalfon), Twitter (@halfon4harlowMP) and Instagram (@halfon4harlowmp). Best wishes, Robert

in person Name and Business: Hi I’m Simon Groat and my business is called Harlow Salt Company. We deliver quality salt tablets to your door for use in your household or business premises water softener.

I set up my business because... We built our own house and wanted to make sure our new kitchen and bathrooms stayed in the best condition and knowing how hard the water is in our area we fitted a water softener. I soon realised that salt tablets are heavy and bulky and thought why wouldn’t everyone want to get their salt tablets delivered to their door! We’ve made it easy to order online or by phone and as we’re local we deliver free of charge and within 48 hours. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? Starting Harlow Salt Company and becoming my own boss. What’s your favourite one liner? Whilst out delivering leaflets we’ve seen some great one liners posted in peoples windows and on their doors. Our favourite is “A fisherman lives here…with the best catch of his life...” C

locals that launch: be naturally healthy Caroline Spindlow is a Registered Nutritional Therapist and the owner of Be Naturally Healthy. In her own words caroline tells us about her business......

Do you hold any qualifications? I studied at the prestigious, College of Naturopathic Medicine in London. Whilst there I completed one year in Biomedicine and two years in Naturopathic Nutrition which included over two hundred hours of clinic experience. I am a fully qualified Registered Nutritional Therapist. How would you describe your job? Put simply, my job is helping people to feel well again so they can get on and live the life they want! I take a whole-body approach with my clients, combining nutrition, lifestyle and medical testing to help them achieve their health goals. I use presenting symptoms as clues to discover any underlying concerns. It’s a bit like being a detective at times. This approach works for chronic conditions or if a client wants to optimise their health. Why did you decide to get into this profession? It became clear to me through my own health journey that we are making ourselves sick through how we eat, move and live. For many people, this is being compounded by taking more and more prescription pills, which is not always the solution - there is an alternative. I believe that what people really need is some guidance and to truly be listened too. Nutritional therapy provides this space and can be the health breakthrough that people need. What has been the most valuable lesson learnt so far? On a professional level, I have learnt that the person who knows the most about a health concern is the one that is suffering, they are most definitely the expert as they live and breath it, night and day, and

Tel:

that is very humbling. I have also learnt that you can’t help people if they don’t know about your business. What hurdles have you faced? I think the biggest hurdle is that of misperception - at the moment I think Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy is a misunderstood profession. It is not about making people feel bad about what they do and don’t eat, or some ‘out-there’ medicine, it is far from it. I also think people feel guilty about investing in self-care, especially when it comes to their health because we have the NHS for ‘free’. What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? I guess, like many business owners, it can be hard to switch off and not let the evenings and weekends become work-time, especially when there are so many clients that need help. When it comes to the human body the learning never stops so reminding myself to step away from the computer at night-time is a regular battle. I am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to social media, so getting my head around all the platforms has been a challenge, I’m getting there, albeit slowly! What has been the most rewarding aspect? What can be more rewarding than contributing to a persons health and wellbeing? It is an honour. How should potential customers contact you? They can find more about me on my website www.benaturallyhealthy.co.uk and/or visit me at my beautiful clinic room in The Coach House, Epping, or my home in Old Harlow I also have a virtual clinic via Zoom.

herts and essex community farm beehive project Herts & Essex Community Farm recently started a Crowdfunding to fund two new bee hives. They achieved their initial target of £750 quite quickly so decided to go for their stretch target of £1250 which would fund a third beehive and beekeeping equipment such as suits, tools and a honey extractor.

we can help to do this is by introducing more bee hives to our farm. Since the introduction of our first hive we have seen an increase in our annual harvest, which means more fresh produce for the local community.

Crowdfunding is where you make a pledge to fund a project and receive some fantastic rewards in return. In the Farm’s case this included a hands-on Beekeeping experience, jars of honey, fruit & vegetable boxes and lots more brilliant rewards. On 23rd May 2019 Herts & Essex Community Farm successfully raised in excess of their reach target raising £1,350 with 57 supporters in 28 days!

Herts & Essex Community Farm is a not for profit community growing site situated in Fold Croft, Harlow. Open to all for volunteering opportunities, the site promotes social inclusion and wellbeing in Harlow whilst also providing fresh and organic produce to the local community.

Bees are a crucial part of our ecosystem as without them the number of plants would rapidly decline and our vibrant biodiversity would be at risk, to the detriment of all life on Earth. Herts & Essex Community Farm are passionate about protecting the biodiversity and one way which

Gallery at Parndon Mill

BODY AND SOUL This exhibition presents Sculpture by John Farnham, based on human and animal forms, complemented by new paintings by Lotte Farnham, which draw on her memories of family and nature. John Farnham worked as assistant for Henry Moore until the sculptor’s death in 1986. He has exhibited widely in this country and abroad and his sculptures can be found in major collections. His latest commission was a large bronze for Pembroke College in Cambridge. John creates works in bronze, stainless steel, stone and marble. He is particularly passionate about carving. It is the process of elimination and “listening” to the stone which excites him. His wife, Lotte, Austrian-born, is a painter and printmaker. Although her work is generally quite abstract, she likes to tell a story. The paintings shown in this exhibition mirror her emotional involvement with nature, particularly the woodland (she grew up on the edge of a large forest), as well as the human condition. Her paintings are colourful and beautiful and John’ sculptures are very tactile. This is an appealing exhibition, to be enjoyed by all.

epping and ongar railway eor

Volunteering at EOR By Robert Good

The Epping to Ongar section of the Railway was completed in 1865 and initially operated steam passenger and goods services. It eventually formed part of the London Underground (LU), Central Line using traditional LU stock. LU ceased their operations 25 years ago this September and we will be organising a special event to mark their withdrawal and the eventual rise of the Epping Ongar Railway (EOR) – ‘25 Years in the Making’.

Class S160 at Ongar Station Photo: Andy Duncan

Today the Railway consists of just under 10km of standard gauge track running between the buffer stops at Ongar Station to a point just short of Epping Underground Station. Our heritage buses operate a regular service from the LU station to the EOR station at North Weald. The Railway operates a variety of both steam and diesel locomotives together with other heritage passenger and goods stock. We run regular events for both enthusiasts and families. Full details can be obtained by visiting our website: www.eorailway.co.uk Over 95% of the people who operate our Railway are volunteers. They are ably supported by a small number of paid employees. Now that our 2019 season is in full swing, we are seeking additional volunteers in all departments including: Station Duties, Permanent Way, Catering, Building and Rolling Stock repairs. After gaining experience in these roles, volunteers often move on to other operational duties such as signallers, drivers or guards.

Charity of the year Aspire support Learn Spring update from ASL By Michelle Tohill, CEO of ASL

Hello from everyone at Aspire, Support Learn. Spring was a very busy time for everyone at ASL, but we had lots of fun too! We’ve braved the colder weather and got out and about here, there and everywhere, including a great night out bowling and a lovely day out in Ware. We even took part in the Great British Clean Up around Harlow! Socialising is a big part of ASL and our regular outings help to build and develop relationships as well as increase personal confidence and esteem. We also had a brilliant time when our tea room was transformed into an Easter themed ‘egg-travaganza’ over the Easter school holidays recently! We had lots of delicious Easter themed makes and bakes on the menu and we even had a visit from the Easter bunny!

You can keep up to date with all things ASL, including our latest news, tea room availability and Saturday opening dates on our website and via social media: www.aspiresupportlearn.co.uk Facebook @ASL-Aspire-Support-Learn Twitter @aslharlow Instagram @aspiresupportlearn

We had so much fun that we decided to do something similar in the May half term! We held a customer vote on social media to decide the theme and “Prince and Princess” was thw clear winner! We dusted off our tiaras, polished our crowns and transformed ASL in to a magical kingdom fit for royalty! We’re open every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, as well as every other Saturday!

the rhys Daniels trust

providing a “home from home” for families when they need it most The Rhys Daniels Trust, based in Essex, is currently in its 25th year. The aim of the charity is to provide help for families who have a child in hospital having treatment.

Barry & Carmen Daniels, who lived in Epping, had the traumatic experience of their child, Rhys, needing potentially lifesaving treatment but discovered their only option for this was at Bristol Children’s hospital. Many miles from home and with no accommodation provided other than that for one parent, the family faced living apart during this most stressful time. Much fundraising was done locally to help them have somewhere to stay together in Bristol, and that’s when the need was found. To have a ‘Home from Home’ that the whole family can stay in, free of charge, near to children’s hospitals. The family started the trust in Rhys’ name, who sadly did not survive his illness but his legacy lives on in the most amazing way - with help provided to thousands of families over the last 25 years, all across the country. Fundraising over the years has resulted in homes purchased right near to children’s hospitals in which a family can stay in, without cost, for as long as their child is having treatment. A’ Home from Home’.

Please come along and support our next event The Supercar Sunday on 29 April at North Weald Airfield from 10-4. If you would like to hold an event yourself in aid of the Rhys Daniels Trust please call us on 01992-570550 where we can offer you advice on ways to support this small but very worthwhile local children’s charity.

Who we are The Rhys Daniels Trust is a UK registered charity that provides free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation at specialist children’s hospitals across the UK, which enable families to stay close to their child receiving treatment for a serious or life-threatening illness. All our facilities are self-contained and supplied free of charge for as long as the hospital and the Trust agrees the family needs them during the child’s hospital treatment. Some children are hospitalised for many months and some families return to our ‘Homes from Home’ as treatment progresses.

Throughout the year we hold fundraising events. Fundraising like this gives us the means to keep our homes up and running, and also gives us the funds to replace furniture, get the bedrooms decorated, buy a new cooker - you name it, we have to get it done!

Harlow Chorus season’s end with a programme of music from the movies Words by Mick Rumens

On Saturday 13th July we will be presenting a concert of music from the Movies and TV at St John’s Arts & Recreation Centre, Old Harlow. We will have two performances at 4.00pm and 7.30pm with refreshments at both. Accompanying us on piano will be Garry Beecher, and our very popular Musical Director, Dr Edward-Rhys Harry will be our Conductor.

the CM17 area and we look forward to the opportunity to entertain many new audience members at this final concert of our 2018/2019 season. On behalf of the Harlow Chorus I would like to thank CM17 Connection and its editor and staff for all their support throughout the season.

Many of the songs will be familiar to our audience with selections from films and TV programmes including Frozen, My Fair Lady, Schindler’s List, The Pink Panther, The Vicar of Dibley, Red Dwarf and many others. Mums and dads in the audience will no doubt remember the Audrey Hepburn films ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and ‘My Fair Lady’ from which we will feature Moon River from the former and a medley of songs from the latter including The Rain in Spain, I Could Have Danced all Night, and All I Want Is a Room Somewhere. All these joyous numbers are counter-balanced by the tender lament from Schindler’s List and “The Lord is my Shepherd” from the very popular TV series The Vicar of Dibley. There is much to enjoy for all the family in this programme with a very popular song from Frozen and The Seal Lullaby for the children. I am sure that this will an ideal event for our local supporters, especially families, in

You can discuss any concerns you may have or to ask questions, everyone is welcome. Monthly Update We have been conducting a proactive operation across Harlow to tackle the problem of off road bikes. This operation, named Op Salmon, sees officers from the community policing team targeting problem areas. During April, we issued three section 59 notices for driving that caused alarm, distress or annoyance in Latton Common. Should these riders be stopped for this issue again, their vehicles can be seized. You can follow this on Facebook and Twitter by searching #OpSalmon. Following reports of speeding in Church Langley Way, we conducted speed checks on Wednesday, May 1. A number of drivers were stopped and given words of advice. We have invested in training for a number of the community police officers so the team will

1. Record your valuables and property serial numbers by using immobilise.com - a free property recording website that helps the police identify owners of recovered property every day. On the site you can create a private and secure log of all your personal property including adding photographs. 2. Use property marking products like UV pens and forensic marking solutions to protect your valuables. This can help police in returning the item to you and could provide valuable evidence in court. 3. Use the stickers that come with the property marking products to deter thieves from targeting your home or valuables. Visit our website to find out more about property marking. 4. Download security apps like Find My iPhone to your mobile phone or laptop. They record, track and wipe your items of their memory, should they get stolen. Some even show you a photo of the person who’s taken it. Keep the app updated with the latest version.

St Clare Hospice

hospice partners with Nuclear Races to present Muddy Mayhem On the morning of Sunday 7th July 2019, you will have the opportunity to channel your inner mud-lover whilst raising vital funding for your local hospice, St Clare. The messy, mud-mad event includes a 5k mud run at the well-known Nuclear Races venue in Brentwood, and boasts many of the renowned Nuclear obstacles such as the Zip Wire and Deathslide. In total, there are 40 obstacles to take on throughout the run to challenge even the toughest mud-lovers! “Mud runs have really gained popularity in the last several years,” explains Challenges and Events Fundraiser at St Clare, Emma Broadbent, “and it’s no wonder why – because they really are so fun and exciting! “There’s no better feeling that gathering up your friends and taking part in a wacky event like Muddy Mayhem – and when you know its all to raise funds for charity, it makes it even more special.”

St Clare Hospice invites everyone in West Essex and East Herts to come and take on the challenge from 10.15am on the day, with the race setting off at 11am. Registration is £50 per adult and £40 per child (13-17) and St Clare suggests participants aim to raise £100 in sponsorship. Participants must be 13+ years to take part. Registration includes a St Clare t-shirt and medal. Once each participant has registered, they will be sent a link for the Nuclear Races Disclaimer which they must complete before the event.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING

STRAWBERRY & CREAM ECLAIRS 50g butter, chilled and diced 65g plain flour, sifted 2 medium eggs, lightly beaten 300ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 150g small strawberries

Filled

with sweetened whipped cream and fresh strawberries, these dainty pastries make a great treat for afternoon tea or can be served as a delicious summer dessert. Swap the strawberries for fresh raspberries or blueberries, if liked.

1. Place the butter and 150ml cold water in a small pan and heat gently until the butter melts. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil then quickly remove from the heat and add all the flour. Beat thoroughly with a wooden spoon until the mixture comes away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball. Leave to cool for 3-4 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 220C, fan 200C, gas mark 7. Line a large baking sheet with baking paper. Beat the eggs into the mixture, a little at a time, until smooth and glossy. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Pipe 8 x 10cm lengths, spaced well apart, onto the baking sheet. 3. Bake for 12-15 mins until the eclairs are well risen and golden. Remove from the oven, pierce each eclair with the tip of a small knife and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes. This allows the steam to escape and dries out the centres of each eclair. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. 4. Whip the cream and icing sugar in a bowl until softly peaking. Spoon into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Hull and slice most of the strawberries (reserving four for decoration). 5. Halve each eclair and fill with the cream then top with sliced strawberries. Sandwich back together and dust with icing sugar. Decorate each one with a swirl of piped cream and a reserved strawberry. TIP: You can make and bake the choux pastry eclairs a day in advance. If the pastry

goes a little soft simply reheat in a hot oven for a few minutes until crisp.

East Herts Wood turners Opportunity for young people to learn Woodturning

The East Herts Woodturners have started a Junior Section on a different night to the main club night. The Junior Section is open to young people aged between 13 and 18. The Section will be limited in number to enable as much time as possible to work on the lathe. No woodturning experience is necessary. The aim is to teach young people basic woodturning to enable them, if they wish, to take part in further training with professional turners as part of the AWGB Youth Training Scheme. The Section is open to both girls and boys and the catchment area includes: Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford or Sawbridgeworth. Following a brief safety talk the young people will work on a lathe initially under the supervision of an experienced Turner some of whom are AWGB approved and tested Tutors.

The Junior Section meets in Sawbridgeworth, 6pm to 8pm on the fourth Tuesday of most months. If you or a young person, you know is interested in learning this craft please contact John on 01279 657901 or email, details below. Setting up the Junior section is supported by the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (The AWGB which is the national association) and partially financially supported by the Stansted Airport Community Trust (SACT) and The Worshipful Company of Turners (The Company) which is a London Livery Company. For many years the East Herts Woodturners have been enabling young people to experience woodturning at Scout Jamborees and other events and enabled over 3500 young people to experience the craft.

The club is a member of the Community Voluntary Association for Broxbourne and East Herts.

The Henry Moore Primary School Dinosaur Work Shop Viking Visit for Year 4 Year 4 were very lucky this half term, as we were visited by a Viking! Thor came to the Henry Moore School to introduce our new topic, Battles and Beasts, teaching the children all about Viking invasions and their way of life. The children took part in a quiz all about Vikings, played a traditional Viking game called Fox and Geese and got to handle everyday Viking objects that could be found in a Viking home, including cups made from horn and combs made from antler! Thor even showed us a real axe and sword, demonstrating how Vikings would use them in battle to kill their enemies (thankfully, he used a melon). Thor wore traditional Viking clothing, including chainmail for battle and gathered trousers with lots of material to demonstrate wealth. We learnt about currency and how silver was used to trade - we even had to haggle with Thor, as he wanted to buy a goat from us! We watched him make coins and got to see them up close too. Thor even taught us some Viking words from Old Norse. By the end of the day, we were left feeling like real-life Vikings!

Newhall Primary academy school & nursery Another busy term At the end of the Spring Term, the children had a very exciting couple of weeks. We invited Mums, Aunties and Grans in to school for a roast dinner to celebrate Mother’s Day. Parents also came in to see their children learning during our termly Open Afternoon. The children have been learning about keeping safe and people who help us. We were very fortunate that the Fire Brigade came to talk to the children and showed them how a fire engine works. Both Reception Classes visited Pizza Express as part of their topic ‘Food Glorious Food’ and learnt how to make their own pizzas. They all had a great time and they were able to take their pizzas home to share with their parents for dinner.

that all children will have before they leave Primary School. The children spent an amazing day at Daisy May’s Farm, collecting eggs, learning about the different animals and riding a pony. To recognise Shakespeare’s birthday, we held a Shakespeare Week, where the children learnt the story of ‘The Tempest’. Each year we will focus on a different Shakespeare play as a whole school. We were really impressed by how well the children responded and engaged with the complex storyline. They created their own islands in the classroom and developed these as settings. They took part in a sensory walk and the children told us that they really believed that they were on the island when they walked through the different areas.

On the last day of term, parents were invited in for our Easter Assembly. We were so proud of how the children sang and took part in all the songs. The parade was a great success and it was lovely to see the children sharing their Easter crowns with the audience.

We are now starting to prepare for next year and have held our first meeting with parents whose children will be joining us in September. We are currently organising pre-school visits and we are looking forward to the upcoming transition sessions.

In the afternoon the Friends of Newhall set up an Easter Egg hunt for all the children in the Nursery and Reception. At the end of the hunt, they were able to collect a chocolate Easter Egg to take home.

The Friends of Newhall are continuing to fundraise for our trim trail and organised a Magic Show with Mr Happy for our current Reception, new Reception children and Nursery Bluebell Room. cm Connection volunteers’ week 1st - 7th June By Alison Runham

Volunteers’ Week is an annual event now lead by NCVO (The National Council for Voluntary Organisations, which marks its 100th anniversary this year). The event celebrates the contribution of millions of volunteers with hundreds of events across the UK and raises the profile of volunteering, something more important than ever in 2019. The benefits of volunteering – for organisations People volunteer with charities and also in the private and public sectors. In 2017/18, 20.1 million (38%) people in the UK volunteered formally at least once a year and 11.8 million did so at least once a month, worth a staggering £22.6 billion a year to the economy. Shaun Delaney, volunteering development manager at NCVO, said: “Volunteers are an integral part of our communities. In every direction you look there will be someone giving up their time for free. Many charities and community groups simply couldn’t exist without them and Volunteers’ Week is the perfect opportunity for us to give volunteers a boost, so they carry on making our communities a better place.” The benefits of volunteering – for you The benefits of volunteering aren’t limited to the gains of the organisations. Volunteering can have a positive effect on your life too.

50

Volunteering is great for: • Developing new skills. • Gaining confidence and improving selfesteem. • Giving you goals. • Giving your day or week structure, and you something to get up or go out for. • A less pressured introduction back into the working world after a break. • Filling (and providing a reference for) employment gaps: showing your keenness to contribute, develop new skills and commit to something, and that you have the self-discipline and motivation to do something meaningful and turn up when expected. • Offering the possibility of employment, whether through the organisation itself or through connections you make. • Expanding your social circle, preventing loneliness, and meeting new friends. • Knowing you’re making a difference. Volunteering opportunities There are hundreds of volunteering opportunities and something suitable for everyone. To find a volunteering opportunity right for you, visit www.volunteersweek.org/ get-involved or the websites of charities

special feature you’d like to support (volunteering for charity isn’t limited to working in a charity shop), and check local magazines. Or try:

Many charities and community groups simply couldn’t exist without volunteers

Libraries and museums. Over 500 of the UK’s 3,800 libraries are now solely or partially operated by volunteers. Libraries are community hubs and a vital source of internet access, quite apart from free access to books, DVDs, magazines and local and genealogical records etc. Many museums also welcome (and rely on) volunteers.

Buddying up. If you have mental or learning disabilities, going to events by yourself can be difficult and intimidating. The Gig Buddies Project matches these people up with volunteers, helping them access gigs and events. See www.gigbuddies.co.uk.

Offering a room. SASH www.sash-uk.org. uk is a charity that prevents young people from becoming homeless by offering them a short-term room in a volunteer’s home.

Food banks, Scouts, Guides, local litterpicking schemes, Health Walk leading: the choice is endless. So why not make June the month you make a difference?
