Have you noticed that the mornings and afternoons are slowly getting lighter? Snowdrops have been flowering for a while now (spotted a lot in Sawbo whilst I was out delivering in February!) and it won’t be long before the Bluebells are carpeting our woodland. Gotta love spring time!

I’m a mum so it seems only right that I use my editorial privilege to remind you about Mothering Sunday - it’s a little earlier this year on Sunday 11th March... forget it at your peril and remember the greatest gift you can give anyone (but especially mums!) is your time. So make time for yours whether it’s a phone call or a visit - these are the gifts that are truly priceless!

Don’t forget if you have an event coming up or belong to a group that could do with a little boost please do get in touch. sawbridgeworth Town council

sawbobus Most people in Sawbridgeworth will have seen Sawbobus. It’s a Community Transport initiative that the Town Council has been providing since 2009. It runs for five and a half days a week out of its base in Budgens car park. The service covers three routes, to Bullfields, to Lower Sheering and to High Wych.

We currently operate under a special permit which allows us to carry people living in the Sawbridgeworth area who are holders of concessionary passes. We pay for the service by a combination of a grant from the District Council and commercial sponsorship.

This may change however as funding dries up and we are having to look at a different approach which may mean carrying a wider range of passengers from a wider area and collecting some fares. More of that another time but we’ll give any new arrangements plenty of publicity.

Our current bus is now a year old and was provided by the Department for Transport under a special grant scheme. These buses are extremely expensive so thank goodness none of the cost fell upon our local taxpayers!

General advice for ‘Flu sufferers is to stay inside, drink plenty of fluids, take Paracetamol as directed on the packet to reduce temperature or fever. sawbridgeworth Lawn tennis club one of Hertfordhsire’s best tennis clubs

Sawbridgeworth Tennis Club shares delightful grounds, in the middle of the town, with the local Cricket and Bowls clubs.

Club facilities include three astroturf, two hard and an artificial clay court plus four specialist mini-tennis courts for juniors. Five of the courts are floodlit and the clubhouse benefits from free car parking accessed via Springhall Road.

The Club welcomes members of all ages and levels of experience from beginners to performance players. The Club enters mens, ladies, mixed and junior teams in national, county and local leagues with something for all players looking to play competitive tennis.

The weekly program at the Club caters for social tennis, match practice, junior and adult coaching.

There is a thriving junior section ranging from tots to teenagers with opportunities for social play, match play as well as coaching from our team of experienced coaches. The coaching team is led by Head Coach, Ian Zellner, who is supported by four other qualified coaches

with both group and individual coaching sessions on offer for juniors and adults.

The Club is friendly and welcoming to new members and there are many opportunities to get involved in one of the many club teams, as well as join in with social playing sessions.

Social tennis, coaching and matches continue all year-round and prospective members can come along to try a game or two for free. The Club is busier in the summer months when at least two weekends of Try Tennis for Free will be arranged – giving the public the chance to come along to see what is on offer.

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice former leventhorpe pupil set to run throughout 2018 in memory of best friend Throughout 2018 Ray Cogan, a dedicated St Clare supporter from Stansted, will be lacing up his trainers and setting off on a “marathon” 13 races in 12 months running challenge in aid of the Hastingwood-based hospice. The father of two is undertaking the year-long running challenge, taking part in a race each month for the whole of 2018, after his best friend received care from the charity in 2015.

Ray Cogan (age 35 years, from Stansted Mountfitchet) ran his first marathon in 2009 whilst serving in the Royal Engineers. His best friend, Dave Ramm, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in September 2015 and was admitted to St Clare Hospice in October. Dave died on 25th November 2015 at the age of just 35 years, just 7 weeks after being diagnosed.

Ray and Dave were friends for nearly 20 years.

Ray said: “Dave and I both went to Leventhorpe School in Sawbridgeworth and that’s where we became friends. After school I joined the army, so I lived away for a while, but we still stayed in touch. I was one of Dave’s ushers at his wedding. We were never out of touch with each other. Some friendships you dip in and out of, but that was never the case with me and Dave.”

Ray secured a place in the London Marathon 2018 after he applied to St Clare Hospice for one of their six Gold Bond places. On attending a marathon evening event at the hospice, and hearing from a past participant, Ray was inspired to expand his St Clare running to a year-long challenge including a run or a triathlon each month of 2018.

was inspired after hearing from a challenger called Clare Gallagher who ran 12 races in 2017 for St Clare, and I thought, I want to do that! I went home and started planning straight away – mapping out what challenges I could take part in each month. I am most excited about London Marathon, this will be my third time running it and it’s incredible, but I am also really looking forward to doing the Paris Marathon too. They are both in April, only 2 weeks apart, so I am bit crazy taking on two marathons so close together.

But I know how much St Clare helped Dave and his wife Sophie, and that will spur me on to complete the challenge.”

Ray’s challenge will see him cover over 250 race miles throughout the year, plus an estimated 1,500 in training miles. Ray has even decided to add a bonus 13th race by aiming to complete the St Clare 5k Santa Run when it returns to Debden in December 2018.

Emma Broadbent, Challenges and Events Fundraiser at St Clare, said: “Ray is undertaking a huge challenge for us this year – 13 races in 12 months is no mean feat! this year – so he is not only a marathon runner, but a marathon fundraiser too – a hospice hero!”

The owners were at home at the time and house lights were on.
