Il concetto di indipendenza, creativa e musicale, è centrale rispetto al cartellone artistico di Club To Club, il festival internazionale di musiche e arti elettroniche di Torino. Club To Club ha creato per gioco la propria moneta (il Tuxel), banconote (in quella da 5 Tuxel
campeggia Stockhausen), francobolli, passaporti, la propria bandiera e l’inno eccezionalmente composto da Teho Teardo, oltre a promuovere la costituente di uno stato immaginario, naturalmente pacifico, chiamato appunto State of Indepen/Dance. La sfida di Club To Club 09 è quella di definire un immaginario indipendente rispondendo alla domanda: da chi o cosa essere indipendenti alla fine degli anni zero? Club To Club ospita showcase internazionali, partnership e progetti esclusivi, anteprime nazionali, proiezioni, installazioni sonore, performance pensate appositamente per il festival. The concept of independence -creative and musical- is central in the programme of Club To Club, Torino’s International Festival of Electronic Music and Arts. Un’atmosfera da village con un tocco cosmopolita, questa è la vita notturna di Bruxelles.

Il 2010 sarà per Torino l’anno delle tre «T»: «Talento, Tecnologia, Tolleranza». Su questi tre punti cardinali, su cui si basa anche uno sviluppo più sostenibile per il territorio e per le sue fasce giovanili, il 2010 si aprirà entusiasticamente sotto la sigla di «European Youth Capital», un titolo che è stato assegnato a Torino lo scorso anno, e che adesso verrà trasmesso da Rotterdam, Capitale Europea dei Giovani in questo 2009, nel passaggio di Capodanno durante un evento di piazza di largo coinvolgimento per il pubblico. Ma sono le visioni e la creazione di opportunità, aldilà degli appuntamenti di spettacolo e di intrattenimento specialmente rivolti a giovani e giovanissimi, che per altro saranno numerosi, a dare un senso a questa grande sfida che Torino e il Piemonte hanno deciso di raccogliere e di portare fino in fondo. Ripartire dai giovani, insomma, è più di una necessità: è urgente. E in questa prospettiva del 2010, il ruolo di Torino, città modello in Italia per le politiche giovanili, e della regione con la sua rete di campus, può influenzare l’orientamento e la potenza degli interventi degli enti pubblici sui temi più cari a giovani quali la precarietà, la ricerca di una prima occupazione, il reddito, il diritto alla casa, e ovviamente anche il tempo libero.
Bruxelles di notte è qualcosa di davvero particolare… La capitale dell’Europa è indubbiamente anche una delle 3 capitali più piccole e ciò contribuisce a creare un’atmosfera da “village” dove alla fine tutti finiscono per conoscersi un po’. Ma a Bruxelles uno si sente benvenuto, accettato… e questo si deve senz’altro all’influenza delle istituzioni Europee, che regalano alla vita notturna di Bruxelles un tocco molto cosmopolita. La festa è dappertutto. Ci sono così tante cose da fare... Il miglior club della capitale è senza dubbio il Libertine Supersport: la programmazione è di altissima qualità e i migliori Dj di Bruxelles sono suoi resident Djs. Durante quelle serate, le maschere cadono, le emozioni esplodono, il sorriso regna sovrano, e tutto questo vive sui suoni della migliore musica elettronica che il mondo possa produrre… Ci vediamo là.
2010 will be remembered in Torino as the year of the three Ts: «Talent, Technology, Tolerance ». Based upon these three cardinal points, on which is also based a more sustainable development for both the territory and the young people, in 2010 Torino is thrilled to celebrate the title of «European Youth Capital» which was assigned last year, and which will be passed on from Rotterdam, currently the European Youth Capital, on New Year’s Eve during a big display in the square with a massive participation of the general public. Yet, beyond the very many scheduled shows and side events addressed to the young people, the true meaning of the challenge that the city of Torino and Piedmont decided to take up and carry until the end, are the visions and the creation of opportunities. In other words the resolution of starting from young people is more than a necessity, it is an urgency. In the perspective of year 2010, the role covered by both Torino, a role model for the rest of Italy in matter of youth policies, and the Region with its network of campuses have the ability to influence the orientation and strength of the public bodies’ intervention on the issues concerning young people, such as job insecurity, first job search, income, the right to set up one’s home and obviously free time.
Brussels by night is rather particular… Indeed, the capital of Europe is undoubtedly also one of the 3 smallest capital of Europe… This creates an atmosphere of “village” where finally everyone knows everyone a little. But in Brussels one also feels accomodated…accepted…That is undoubtedly the influence of the European Institutions…they give Brussels nightlife a very cosmopolitan touch. Party is everywhere…there are so many things to do... The best club of the capital is without any doubts the Libertine Supersport. The programation is super qualitative and Brussels best Dj’s are there the residents. On these nights, the masks fall, the emotions explode, the smiles dominate, and this on the sound of the best electronic music the world can propose…See you there.

Concorso: La Musica Elettronica Italiana nel 2061 Contest: Italian Electronic Music in the 2061 di Paolo Verri
La Regione Piemonte da sempre sostiene Club to club e il mondo della sperimentazione che lega musica e tecnologia. Cercare nuove musiche dai migliori talenti europei del mondo dell’elettronica - e non solo - è un’azione che nasce nel 2009 in coerenza con l’anno europeo della creatività e l’innovazione promosso dall’Unione Europea. Promuovere tale azione in previsione dei 150 anni dell’Italia significa anche mettere in stretta connessione l’idea di creatività con l’immagine stessa del nostro Paese come cuore culturale dell’Europa contemporanea.
Da marzo a novembre del 2011 a Torino festeggeremo i primi 150 anni dell’Italia. Dell’Italia nazione, perché l’Italia della cultura, l’Italia della musica, nasce molti secoli fa, forse con Dante e con Giotto e con le laude che accompagnavano le loro letture e le loro pitture. Forse anche prima, con i canti dei monaci che trasmettevano la tradizione classica e che guardavano a quelle radici con la certezza che conservarla nei secoli avrebbe prodotto innovazione, speranza, divenire. Ecco perché cercare le musiche per il 2011, per i festeggiamenti del 150° dell’unità d’Italia è una sfida che ci appassiona. Torino sarà il centro dei festeggiamenti, con quattro grandi mostre, una dedicata all’arte, una al cibo, una alla storia, una al futuro. In un mondo che cambia, in una nazione che diventa sempre meno uguale a se stessa, immaginare musiche che possono aiutare i visitatori a com-
prendere dove sono capitati, ovvero un luogo insieme di riflessione e emozione sul passato e di apertura su quanto deve ancora accadere, a loro e ai loro figli, è fortemente necessario. La musica è lo strumento migliore per avvicinare le menti e i corpi al concetto di identità e di diversità, concetti che convivono e che ogni giorno, nel nostro paese, si rafforzano reciprocamente, al di là delle attese. Spostare il traguardo ai duecento anni dell’Italia, come concordato con gli amici di Club To Club, è poi la sfida finale. I monaci della musica elettronica, in perenne peregrinare tra le consolle dell’Europa contemporanea, sapranno certo raccogliere sonorità e farne patrimonio comune. Aspettiamo i loro segni, i loro segnali, stimoli al movimento, stimoli alla corteccia cerebrale, agli abitanti delle città, agli abitanti del mondo.
Regione Piemonte has always supported Club to Club and the world of experimentation linking music and technology. The search for new music strands by the best European talents on the electronic music scene – and not only – came about in 2009 and is consistent with the European year of creativity and innovation promoted by the European Union. The promotion of such action in view of Italy’s unification 150th anniversary marks all the more the will to create a close connection between creativity and the country’s very image as one of contemporary Europe’s cultural heart.
From March to November 2011 Torino will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. The unification of Italy as a nation, that is, as Italy of culture and music was born several centuries ago, perhaps with Dante and Giotto and with the praise which came for each of their compositions and paintings. And perhaps even before then, with the monks who transmitted the classical culture through their chants and looked back on those roots with the certainty that preserving that very culture throughout the centuries would have produced innovation, hope and evolution. That is why looking for the right music to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification in 2011 proves to be an exciting challenge. Torino will be the heart of celebrations, with four great exhibitions, one dedicated to art, one to food, one to history and another to the future. In an ever changing world and in a country which looks progressively less similar to itself, to imagine the music
which can give visitors a better understanding of where they have ended up - i.e. a city which is both a place for reflection and sentiment over the past and an outlook on what has yet to come – is felt as strongly necessary. Music is the best tool to draw nigh the mind and body to the concept of identity and difference, notions which live together and which in our country reinforce day by day beyond expectations. To move the milestone further to the two hundredth anniversary as agreed with the friends from Club To Club is but the final challenge. The monks of electronic music in an eternal pilgrimage among the decks across contemporary Europe will certainly know how to collect the sounds and make them a shared heritage. We are waiting for signs, for a boost to move, a boost for the cerebral cortex and for the inhabitants of the city and the world.

Stepping out of the Past Uscire dal passato di Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner
Un gruppo di studenti del corso di Sound Design dello Ied di Milano sarà guidato da Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner e coordinato da Painè Cuadrelli nella produzione di un PaesaggioSonoro e di una performance. Seguendo il claim di Club To Club 2009 ”State of Indipen/Dance”, il lavoro verterà sui temi dell’identità nazionale e culturale, affrontandoli attraverso la produzione e l’elaborazione di suoni. Doppia performance a Torino e Milano. Talvolta immaginare il futuro può essere una futile distrazione. Dove sarete tra cinque, dieci o venti anni? Che cosa starete facendo? Come sarà cambiata o migliorata la tecnologia, come avrà migliorato, assistito o anche preso il posto delle cose che fate? Solo vent’anni fa ci godevamo i nostri media: la televisione analogica, la radio FM, le musicassette e i Walkman con quelle ingombranti cuffiette. I computer suonavano coraggiosamente file di musica MIDI con dei sequencer molto basici, mentre una primitiva forma di campionatore ci offriva un generoso 1MB o forse un minuto di tempo, il tutto comunemente salvato su floppy. I cellulari promettevano un futuro di comunicazione mobile istantanea ma erano grandi come mattoni e assurdamente costosi. Facciamo un fast-forward: va da sé che oggi viviamo in uno scenario del tutto diverso. Il concetto di multimedia sembra essere un tale luogo comune, ma in realtà è ancora sorprendentemente nuovo e pieno
di possibilità. L’innovazione delle nuove tecnologie dischiude strade verso mondi inimmaginabili. Ci sono opportunità e prospettive pronte per essere colte e divorate. Non passa neanche un mese che una televisione, un registratore compact, o un lettore MP3 non vengano superati, in una continua battaglia di seduzione e desiderio. Le idee sono state liberate dalle sintesi e dai processi dei software. La Native Instruments ha aperto mondi musicali accessibili e dinamici di altissima qualità grazie ai suoi software Kontakt, Reaktor e Kore. La GForce ha imitato i sintetizzatori classici dell’età d’oro, dove ora l’amato Mellotron dei primi anni ‘70 può essere vostro per un prezzo inferiore a un volo per Milano. Gli artisti di tutto il mondo possono collaborare globalmente senza lasciare le loro case condividendo il loro portfolio con il resto del mondo. ‘Photoshoppare’ un’immagine è entrato nel gergo comune mentre Flash, HTML, CSS sono termini conosciuti ai meno
A group of students of the Sound Design class at Ied in Milan will be led by Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner and coordinated by Painè Cuadrelli in the production of a sound landscape and a performance. Along the lines of Club To Club 2009’s claim, “State of Indipen/Dance”, their work will broach the themes of national and cultural identity by the production and the elaboration of sounds. Navighiamo in una moltitudine di possibilità e ciò incoraggia e offre promesse che oggi come oggi non possiamo neanche immaginare. Io, per esempio, desidero ardentemente il futuro ma chiedo anche un altro po’ di tempo per godermi il presente.
Il concetto di multimedia è ancora, a sorpresa, nuovo e pieno di possibilità. The notion of multimedia is still startlingly new and full of possibilities.
Imagining the future can sometimes be a futile distraction. Where will you be in five, ten or twenty years? What will you be doing? How will technology have altered, enhanced, assisted, or even replaced some of the things that you do? Just twenty years ago we were experiencing our media on analogue television sets, FM radio, cassettes and Walkmans with bulky headphones. Computers bravely ran MIDI music files on very basic sequencers, and an early form of music sampler would generously offer 1 MB or perhaps one minute of sample time, commonly stored on a floppy disc. Mobile phones suggested a future of instant mobile communication but were the size of building bricks and absurdly expensive. Fast-forward and it goes without saying that we are in a very different place today. The notion of multimedia seems so commonplace but it’s still startlingly new and full of possibilities. Innovation in new technologies constantly opens up avenues towards almost unimaginable worlds. Opportunities and prospects are ripe for devouring and embracing. Barely a month passes when one item
– television, compact recorder, MP3 player – is surpassed, in an on-going battle of seduction and desire. Ideas have been liberated by software synthesis and process. Native Instruments have opened up accessible, dynamic, impossibly high quality music worlds with their Kontakt, Reaktor and Kore software. GForce have emulated classic synths of the golden age, where now the beloved Mellotron of the early 1970s is now available for less than a flight to Milan. Artists can collaborate globally without leaving home and share their portfolio with the world. ‘Photoshopping’ an image has entered general conversation, whilst Flash, HTML, CSS are terms known to some but experienced by many in new media productions. Cinema and gaming industries have in particular embraced these developments to enable worlds of sound and image design that are dynamic, illusory and hyperreal. We swim in possibilities and that encourages and offers promises that we can’t even imagine at this moment. I for one long for the future, but ask for just a little more time to enjoy the present too.

Prospettiva09 è il risultato di contaminazioni di generi - teatro, musica, danza, arte - riuniti in due mesi di programmazione che aprono la nuova stagione del Teatro Stabile di Torino (18 ottobre - 8 novembre ‘09). Trecento artisti, cinquanta appuntamenti, quattro gli spazi coinvolti: Carignano, Cavallerizza, Gobetti, Fonderie Limone. Gruppo nato nel 2004, Pathosformel lavora a creazioni prive di tutti quegli elementi che compongono uno spettacolo teatrale, recuperando ciò che ne determina l’essenza: suono, forma, immagine sonora. La timidezza delle ossa e Concerto per harmonium e città sono i due spettacoli della compagnia che vanno in scena alla Cavallerizza Reale per Prospettiva (3 novembre 2009). Il 4 novembre al Teatro Gobetti la nuova creazione di ConiglioViola: Concerto senza titolo è un’antologia di canzoni che indaga poeticamente il più grande tabù della cultura contemporanea, la morte, riattualizzata dagli arrangiamenti di una crew internazionale di musicisti elettronici di culto e dalla magia dell’interpretazione live di Antonella Ruggiero. Prospettiva09 is the result of fusion of genres - theatre, music, ballet, art – reunited in two months’ programme opening a new season of Teatro Stabile di Torino (18th October – 8th November ‘09). Three hundred artists, fifty events, four venues: Carignano, Cavallerizza, Gobetti, Fonderie Limone. Born in 2004, Pathosformel creates performances devoid of all the elements that compose the traditional play, retrieving all the elements that determine the essence: sound, form, sound image. La timidezza delle ossa and Concerto per harmonium and città are two shows the company will be performing at Cavallerizza Reale per Prospettiva (3rd November 2009). On 24th November Teatro Gobetti Nuova will be staging Coniglio Viola’s new creation: Concerto senza titolo is an anthology of songs poetically investigating the greatest taboo of contemporary culture, death ritualised by the arrangements of an international crew of cult electronic musicians and the magic of Antonella Ruggiero’s live performance.

Le parole si sgretolano liberando la loro anima, la voce. Il linguaggio è quello dell’imprecazione, ma la sua violenza non passa attraverso il significato delle invettive, che si tratti dei versi della Bibbia o delle note degli attentatori dell’11/9. Si scaglia ad un livello sotterraneo ed universale seguendo le infinite potenzialità espressive delle emissioni vocali e sonore. Cosi la voce di Chiara Guidi si intreccia con la partitura che Teho Teardo ha creato a partire da essa e la voce teutonica di Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten) si deframmenta e si espande dialogando con le sonorità graffianti del violino di Alexander Balanescu. Qualsiasi apparato scenico scompare, unico protagonista è il suono che nella sua matericità crea immagini vivide stimolando tutto il potere immaginifico della nostra mente. Words crumble liberating their soul and voice. The language used is curse language, but its violence does not come from the meaning of the insult, whether verses from the Bible or the footnotes of 11/9 terrorists. The abuse is flung at an underground and universal level following the infinite expressive potentialities of vocal and sound emissions. Thus Chiara Guidi’s voice intertwines with scores created by Teho Teardo starting from it and Blixa Bargeld’s (Einstürzende Neubauten) Teutonic voice which defragmentating and expanding dialogues with the scratching sounds produced by Alexander Balanescu’s violin. All theatrical scenery disappears, the only protagonist being the sound which in its consistency creates vivid images stimulating al the immaginific power of our mind.

Volendo, è sempre la vecchia storia. Volendo, uno (Dorian Concept) alla fine si rifà sempre a Prince, pur facendolo con un laptop e una piccola tastiera da due soldi, l’altro (Culoe De Song) porta avanti la fiamma della house più soulful e venata di sfumature afro, e questa da Osunlade in giù non è certo una novità. Sì: sulla carta, è la solita storia. Ma dal vivo, li vedi e cambi completamente giudizio e prospettiva. Questi due ragazzi poco più che ventenni hanno dentro di sé l’energia della contemporaneità. Hanno la forza mentale di teste che sono nate in un ambiente in cui il computer, lo stare connessi con tutto (storia, stimoli, visioni) e il pensare istantaneo del web sono come l’aria che si respira. Questi due ragazzi rileggono le basi di noi appassionati di ritmi attraverso la forza dell’iper-presente. E le stravolgono. Magnificamente. It is somewhat the usual old story. One (Dorian Concept) somewhat takes his cue from Prince, even though just by means of a laptop and a cheap small-sized keyboard, the other (Culoe De Song) carries forward the flame of a more soulful house music criss-crossed with Afro nuances, and this from Osunlade down is certainly not a first. True, on paper it is the usual story, but wait till you see their gig and both your judgement and perspective change. These two boys, only twenty something, have the energy of contemporaneousness inside. They have the mental strength of minds which thrive on computers, being connected to everything (history, stimula, visions) and the web’s instant thought as though it were the air they breathe. This twosome reinterprets the basis of us people with a passion for rhythms through the force of the hyper-present. And they twist them. Magnificently.

Ascoltarlo in religioso silenzio, oppure lasciarsi strapazzare dalle sue onde, ballando fino all’alba. E’ duplice l’approccio che si può avere alla musica di Carl Craig, il «Miles Davis dell’elettronica» come qualcuno l’ha ribattezzato (anche se per altri l’accostamento appare forzato, perché Craig può vivere anche di luce propria...), figura di spicco e di pregio assoluto nella produzione di un suono che, al pari dell’auto, ha fatto la storia di Detroit. Dalla capitale mondiale della techno, infatti, arriva il musicista e dj al cui nome si legano momenti irripetibili e dalla forza trascinante, come la partecipazione ai grandi e affollatissimi festival estivi dal Sonar in giù, ma anche dimensioni più lievi e intellettualmente seducenti, come la sua ultima apparizione in Italia nell’ambito di Mito Settembre Musica, con il live di Versus insieme all’orchestra Les Siècles e a Moritz Von Oswald. Listen to him in religious silence or let yourself be smothered by his sound waves by dancing until dawn. Twofold is the approach allowed by the music of Carl Craig, electronic music’s answer to Miles Davis, as defined by some (although others deem the comparison a tad strained, because Craig can shine in his own light...), an absolute prestigious high-figure in the production sound that, like cars, has made the history of Detroit. As a matter of fact techno’s world capital is hometown of this musician and dj whose name is linked to irrreplicable moments of enthralling force, whether at the big crowded summer festivals from Sonar downwards, or smaller softer and intellectually seducing venues, such as his last appearance in Italy within the Mito Settembre Musica festival, with the Versus live performance together with the Les Siècles orchestra and Moritz Von Oswald.

Fino a spingersi con audacia ai confini della musica colta (la “ricomposizioni” di Ravel e Mussorgsky insieme a Carl Craig) e del jazz (le ascese verticali compiute in trio con Sasu Ripatti e Max Loderbauer). Nato nel noiosissimo Luxembourg 28 anni fa, Francesco Tristano Schlimé, pianista classico dai boccoli biondi e dal faccino efebico, ora è diventato Francesco Tristano nella frenetica Barcellona, a un passo da Ibiza, praticamente dentro il Sonar, adorato da Murcof, Carl Craig, Moritz von Oswald, ovvero dall’aristocrazia della techno elevata a composizione contemporanea. Interprete di Bach, ha cominciato a improvvisare. Francesco Tristano, il barocco tra i bpm, s’alza in piedi e caccia le mani dentro il pianoforte, lo usa come una tabla, graffia e schiaffeggia le corde: fa techno acustica. «Il piano è una macchina, con filtri, oscillatori, flangers, o altri effetti direttamente techno. John Cage ha dimostrato che ogni rumore, o suono, è musica. Quando entro con le mie mani dentro al pianoforte cerco un’altra cosa. Ogni volta che suono, suono una cosa diversa». Born in boring Luxembourg 28 years ago, Francesco Tristano Schlimé, a classical pianist with blond locks and a delicate baby face, has now become Francesco Tristano in hectic Barcelona, a stone’s throw away from Ibiza, practically inside the Sonar, worshipped by Murcof, Carl Craig, Moritz von Oswald, i.e. the aristocracy of techno viewed as elevated contemporary composition. Performer of Bach, he started improvising. Francesco Tristano, the baroque among BPMs, stands up and places his hands inside the piano, he plays it as if it were a tabla, he scratches and slaps the strings: he plays acoustic techno. «The piano is a machine, with its filters, oscillators, flangers, and other straightforward techno effects. John Cage has proved how every bit of noise or sound is music. When I put my hands inside the piano I’m looking for something else. Every time I play, I play something different».

A festeggiare nel programma di Club To Club 09 il ventesimo compleanno Warp ci sono due artisti altrettanto innovativi ed eclettici, a testimonianza dell’originale identità dell’etichetta di Sheffield. Nato a Detroit nel 1983, Jimmy Edgar è un artista il cui linguaggio musicale è stato influenzato da jazz, funk e dalla cultura dei beats. Oltre a produrre i sui acclamati dischi solisti (come Color Strip, uscito nel 2006), è coinvolto in innumerevoli altri progetti, tra cui una collaborazione con il cantante electropop Almamy in una serie concettuale di cinque EP, un alias electrofunk (Her Bad Habit) e i Plus Device, che incidono per la Hefty Records. Tra i produttori che invece stanno letteralmente ridefinendo le coordinate stilistiche dell’hip hop (nel senso più trasversale e nobile del termine), lo scozzese Hudson Mohawke, già parte del collettivo LuckyMe, si è ormai guadagnato un ruolo di assoluto prestigio. Le architetture sonore che contraddistinguono il suo nuovo album Butter testimoniano di un approccio sempre sperimentale e geniale ma accessibile e ricco di possibilità. Born in Detroit in 1983, Jimmy Edgar is an artist whose music language is influenced by jazz, funk and the beats culture. As well as producing his acclaimed solo records (such as Color Strip, released in 2006), he is involved in scores of other projects, among which a team up with electropop singer Almamy in a conceptual collection of five EPs, an electrofunk alias (Her Bad Habit) and Plus Device, who records with Hefty Records. Among the producers who are literally redefining hip hop’s style coordinates (in the breadest transversal and noblest sense of the word), the Scotch Hudson Mohawke, already part of the collective LuckyMe, has by now gained absolute prestige. The sound architectures marking his new album, Butter witness an increasingly experimental and genius approach which is at the same time accessible and full of possibilities.

Invece della faccia scura e il sorriso beffardo ecco due occhi spalancati e niente bocca per parlare. Ognuno ci legge le metafore che preferisce riguardo un paese come il nostro che fa sentire poco la propria voce e passa molto tempo ad osservare gli altri, nello schermo della tv o dal buco della chiave. Il grande malinteso è questo: credere che la creatura di Bob Rifo sia la cosa più esterofila possibile quando invece è prodotto interno lordo allo stato puro. Abbiamo esportato la loro elettronica scureggiona così come abbiamo fatto con la pasta Barilla e i baffoni di Super Mario Bros. Per crederci conviene guardare l’azzeccata copertina del loro esordio Romborama firmata Tanino Liberatore. Oppure fate caso al doppione nella tracklist: lo stesso pezzo cantato da Cool Kids (per il resto del mondo) e Marracash (per l’Italia). Proprio come insegna Arlecchino scaltro e inimitabile servo di due padroni alla volta.
Designer Turbokrapfen has created a limited edition jacket for 55DSL to celebrate the collaboration between the brand and Bloody Beetroots. The jacket is part of the 10.55 project, a series of limited editions through which 55DSL gives the opportunity to new artists and designers to create and to propose in total freedom the graphic work of some tees created in just 1055 pieces. On the 55DSL.COM website you can watch the video produced for this new collaboration, download the ghettoblaster and all the icons from the video. What if Bloody Beetroots were the new Italian stock character? Say like Pulcinella and Co. without the sinister face and the mocking smile but with eyes wide open and no mouth to speak from instead. Each one of us may want to see their favourite metaphor of a country like ours which hardly makes itself heard at all and spends a lot of its time observing others from either the television or the keyhole. The great misunderstanding is to think that Bob Rifo’s creature is the most xenophile thing possible, when in truth it is the gross domestic product. We exported their farty electronic music as we did with pasta Barilla and Super Mario Bros’s moustache. To believe so, you want to take a look at their Romborama debut album’s spot-on sleeve by Tanino Liberatore. Or note the duplicate in the tracklist: the same tune twice first performed by Cool Kids (for the rest of the world) and Marracash (for Italy). Just like our national stock character Harlequin shows us - a shrewd and inimitable servant of two masters.

Le novità arrivano dalla periferia, molto più spesso di quanto non raccontino le cronache ufficiali. E se chi segue i corsi sotterranei della musica sa che Glasgow proprio periferia non è, le quotazioni di colossi come Londra, Berlino o New York paiono irraggiungibili. Eppure è lassù in Scozia che Jonnie Wilkes e Twitch (già creatore di Pure, primo club in Europa ad invitare Jeff Mills e Richie Hawtin!) hanno lanciato nel 1997, con le loro leggendarie serate Optimo, un approccio da allora imitatissimo alla pista da ballo. Un vale tutto con controllo qualità attivato, e selezioni inaspettate che pescano senza barriere di genere dall’intera collezione dei DJ. Collezione della quale fanno parte sicuramente gli Hot Chip, pesi massimi dell’electro-pop mondiale: Joe Goddard è il loro cantante e tastierista, e seleziona dance eclettica dal sapore indie con la medesima attitudine divertente e divertita. D’altronde, la fonte della poetica da cui il musicista inglese trae ispirazione per costruire musiche elettroniche di estrema e dilaniante dolcezza, non è altro che la sua sensibilità di essere umano. Elegant vibrations and delicate hypnotic loops intertwine in a sensitive environment designed by the architect of contemporary electronic music, i.e. Jon Hopkins, self-taught composer, pianist and producer, whose talent emerges in his live performances with an overflowing light. Thus his Club To Club gig will avail itself of the added value collaboration with the Italian-Dutch collective of audio-visual researchers «Optofonica» who will surround Hopkins’s dreamy sounds with a net of optical segments and perspective which will enhance or unhinge their lyricism. L’ho già vista questa scena: prima arriva un nuovo genere dall’underground londinese, “roba che suonano soli neri” dice il commesso del negozio di dischi di Soho.. Poi comincia ad occuparsene la BBC, e lo senti anche nell’aria, semplicemente passando davanti ad un negozio di sneakers in oxford street. Poi esplodono le produzioni. Quasi tutti realizzano il genere in maniera ortodossa ; ma ad un certo punto qualcuno inizia a distinguersi dal mucchio inventando dischi meno terra terra, più illuminati, allargando l’orizzonte. L’ho già vista questa scena. Era la Drum’n’Bass e riaccade per il Dubstep.. Martyn ( olandese) nasce come dj Drum’n’Bass , ma approda all’attenzione del mondo in un momento in cui la Dubstep entra nei salotti, non più nicchia ma coolness, quando non è più solo “roba che suonano i neri”. La forza di Martyn è di mettere il genere in comunicazione con le atmosfere sexy di Flying Lotus, le citazioni dal Two Step di Burial, i misteri notturni di una certa Deephouse. Martyn elabora tutto. E costruisce “ suono del momento”. Been there, seen that: first a new London underground genre comes about, “stuff that black people would play” says the sales assistant of the record shop in Soho. Then BBC starts talking about it, and you can feel it in the air, simply by walking by a trainers’ shop in Oxford street. Then productions explode. They all deal with that genre in an orthodox fashion; but suddenly someone stands out of the crowd and invents less ordinary records, more illuminated, and broadens its horizon. I’ve seen it all before. Back then it was Drum’n’Bass and now it’s all happening again with Dubstep.. Martyn (Dutch) was born a Drum’n’Bass dj, but catches the world’s interest at a moment when Dubstep enters into the living rooms; no longer a niche but coolness; when it stops being “stuff black people would play”. Martyn’s strength is to put the said genre in communication with the Flying Lotus’s sexy atmospheres, Burial’s Two Step quotations, a certain Deephouse’s night mysteries. Martyn processes it all and builds the “sound of the moment”.

A Club to Club per recarsi oltralpe non sono necessari tavole da snow né tantomeno maglioni che pungono. Non è neanche necessario varcare i confini, tutto converge allo State of Indepen/Dance. Laurent Garnier, ad esempio, sarà Primo Ministro dello Stato del clubbing la notte del 6 al Supermarket. La sua carriera diplomatica è nota ai più: conta la presidenza onoraria del French Touch, e il titolo di Lord conquistato all’Hacienda, dove scoprì che fare il dj significa assemblare tutto quel che ti passa davanti, senza escludere generi e stili. Aggiungeteci il perfezionismo tecnico, et voilà il suo programma di governo: manco a dirlo, il ballo è il primo e unico punto. Do you know that last stretch of the cableway on the Mont Blanc, the one that takes you into French territories? Well, forget it. With Club to Club to go beyond the Alps you won’t need snow boards or itchy woollen jumpers. You needn’t go beyond the border either, because everything will merge into the State of Indepen/Dance. Laurent Garnier, for one, will be the Prime Minister of the State of clubbing from the night of 6th at the Supermarket. His diplomatic career is known to most: his French Touch honorary presidency counts, and so does the Lordship title achieved at the Hacienda, where he discovered that being a dj meant to assemble whatever came by without dismissing genres and styles. Add technical perfectionism, et voilà his political manifesto: dancing is the first and only point il va sans dire.

Vent’anni dopo la caduta del Muro, Berlino è una città viva, giovane e all’avanguardia. È l’emblema della metropoli contemporanea e soltanto in una nucleo così febbrile poteva nascere un locale come il Berghain/Panoramabar. Club techno numero uno al mondo, è un concentrato di musica, arte e trasgressione. La struttura è quella di una ex centrale termoelettrica, con spesse mura in cemento e soffitti alti diciotto metri, un tempo sede del mitico Ostgut. Marcel Dettmann è dj resident dal 1999 e ha all’attivo svariate produzioni sulla Ostgut Tonträger, etichetta sorta all’interno del club e divenuta un culto per gli appassionati del genere. Shed ha firmato con Shedding The Past l’album migliore del 2008 mentre Steffi è cofondatrice della label Klakson: insieme sono gli alfieri nel mondo del nuovo sound berlinese. Twenty years after the fall of the wall, Berlin is a bustling young and forefront city. It is the symbol of the contemporary metropolis and only in such a feverish centre could a venue like Berghain/ Panoramabar be born. The world’s number one techno club is a concentrate of music, art and transgression. The building is an ex thermoelectric power station, with thick concrete walls and 18-metre high ceilings, once the headquarters of the mythical Ostgut. Marcel Dettmann has been the resident dj since 1999 and under his belt he has a score of productions with Ostgut Tonträger the club’s label , now a cult among the enthusiasts of the genre. Shed has signed up with Shedding The Past 2008’s best album, whilst Steffi is co-founder of the record label, Klakson: together they are Berlin’s new sound advocates in the world.

Di fronte a personaggi del calibro di Dj Pierre la tentazione di liberarsi della trita definizione che lo vuole dj-musicista e archiviare il personaggio alla voce “inventori” è fortissima. Sì, perché Nathaniel Pierre Jones è prima di tutto un curioso Archimede sonoro, uno dei pochi musicisti portatori di un sound nuovo, un suono “padre”, da cui sono partite infinite derive della musica elettronica. Tutto inizia nel 1987 nella Chicago della proto-house, quando Dj Pierre, smanettando un Roland TB 303, fino ad allora un ordinario sintetizzatore per basso, tira fuori un suono acido, urlante, alieno. Nasce l’EP Acid Trax, il motore immobile della house a venire. Ma Dj Pierre non si fossilizza sui gorgoglii del 303. Nella sua carriera ha prodotto di tutto, dai proclami anti-cocaina come “Rise From Your Grave” alla più raffinata house vocale (come la celeberrima “The Horn Song”, con lo pseudonimo The Don). Un ingegno multiforme dietro la consolle merita i migliori passi in pista. With characters of Dj Pierre’s stature you are highly tempted to get rid of the trite dj-musician definition and file them under the word “inventors”. Yes, Nathaniel Pierre Jones is first and foremost a curious sound Archimedes, one of the few bearers of a new sound - a “source” sound generating scores of electronic music spin offs. Everything started in 1987 in proto-house Chicago, when Dj Pierre, messing with a Roland TB 303, before then an ordinary bass synthesiser, pulls out a screaming, alien acid sound. Thus the EP Acid Trax - motionless engine of house music to come. But Dj Pierre does not dwell on the 303 gurgles. In his career he produced all sorts of things, from anti-cocaine proclaims, such as “Rise From Your Grave”, to the more refined vocal house (such as the very famous “The Horn Song”, by the alias, The Don). A multiform genius behind the deck who deserves nothing less than your best moves on the dance floor.

C’è stato un preciso momento storico nel quale Nathan Fake e il suo socio James Holden sembravano destinati a comandare il mondo. Con quelle faccine da bravi ragazzi di buona famiglia, uno avvertiva che gli idioti stavano vincendo e si sistemava ai controlli, l’altro proponeva la soluzione definitiva: annegare i suddetti idioti in un oceano d’amore. Erano tempi nei quali ti aspettavi di vedere la bandiera della Border Community su ogni balcone, più o meno. Non è andata proprio così. Ma intanto Nathan quest’anno ha tirato fuori il suo secondo disco Hard Islands, decisamente più dritto e techno, e sul palco sa perfettamente come mettere in riga coloro che hanno deciso di presenziare al suo rito. E per ora basta e avanza, visto che a 26 anni c’è sempre tempo per prendere finalmente il comando del mondo. There was a precise historical moment when Nathan Fake and his partner James Holden seemed to be meant to rule the world. The good family’s good guys’ faces, one warned that the idiots were winning and sorted himself out at the system’s deck, whilst the other proposed the ultimate solution: to drown the above mentioned idiots into an ocean of love. Those were times when you more or less expected to see the Border Community flag waving on each and every balcony. It didn’t quite turn out that way. But in the meanwhile, this year, Nathan has come out with his second record, Hard Islands, definitely a more straightforward and techno creation. On stage he perfectly knows how to keep in line those who have decided to attend to his function. And for the time being this is more than enough, given that he is only 26 years young and has all the time to take over the world.

Il genio. Totale. Quello che anzichè ballare lo stai a guardare a bocca aperta mentre cambia i dischi in consolle, e due ore passano in un secondo. Jeff Mills che ha quadrato astrazione e tribalità. Ma anche Jeff Mills l’esibizionista, come titolava un suo dvd del 2004 (“Exhibitionist”: oliatissimo esercizio ginnico di vanità e telecamera fissa sulle sue mani che toccano i dischi, aggiustano i beats, scratchano). Nessun dj ha mai avuto un profilo così vicino al lato più puramente gotico della classica. Il Wolfgang Amadeus della techno (Robert Hood il suo Salieri?!?). E come nei negozietti di Vienna la faccia di Mozart è finita sulle stagnole dei cioccolatini, così lo sguardo profondo di Mills abita ormai in migliaia di foto amatoriali, brancicato dai fan sudati, divorato, santificato. A total genius. The kind you stare at agape while he changes records at the turn tables, instead of dancing; and two hours go by just like that. Jeff Mills the one who squared abstraction and tribal sounds. But also Jeff Mills, the “exhibitionist”, as he himself entitled his 2004 DVD (“Exhibitionist”: debonair work out of vanity and fixed camera on his hands whilst they touch records, tweak the beats, scratch). No other dj has ever had a profile so close to the most gothic side of classical music. Techno’s Wolfgang Amadeus (might Robert Hood be his Salieri?!?). And just like Mozart’s face appears on chocolate tinfoil in all the little shop windows in Vienna, so Mills’ penetrating look dwells on thousands of amateurs’ pics, fumbled by his sweaty fans, devoured and sanctified.

Da 17 anni nella scena musicale elettronica europea, Robin Rimbaud è più attivo che mai. Dai suoi esordi in cui intercettava le conversazioni dei cellulari, alle sue ultime produzioni, è sempre più focalizzato su progetti trasversali e mixmediali: dal sound design per Philips e Samsung, alle collaborazioni con compagnie di danza ed artisti visivi, alla didattica, alle colonne sonore per film, musical, installazioni, videogames, eventi sportivi e culturali. Sempre in movimento (e in viaggio), Scanner è uno sperimentatore sonico che continua a rinnovarsi, mantenendo una forte identità. Che si sente in ogni sua creazione. Già batterista dei bizzarri ¡Tchkung!, originario di Seattle ma ora residente a Barcellona, Filastine ha sviluppato negli ultimi anni un proprio percorso a base di industrial hip-hop e breakcore. E’ la Soot Records, etichetta di DJ/Rupture, ad aver pubblicato i suoi album Burn It e Dirty Bomb, lavori di spicco nell’arte del collage sonoro, tra ritmi urbani e suggestioni mediorientali. On the European electronic music scene for 17 years, Robin Rimbaud is more productive than ever. Since his debut when he used to intercept mobile phone conversations up to his latest productions, he is more and more into transversal and mix-media projects: from the sound design for Philips and Samsung, to collaborations with ballet and visual artists companies, to teaching, to composing movie sound track scores, musicals, art installations, videogames, sport and cultural events. Always moving (and travelling), Scanner is a sonic experimenter who continues renovating, yet maintaining a strong identity, which is felt in each of his creations. Once the drummer with bizarre band ¡Tchkung!, originally from Seattle, now living in Barcelona, in recent years, Filastine developed his own path based on industrial hip-hop and breakcore. Per Soap&Skin gli aggettivi sono sempre di tipo romantico. Sofferta, glaciale, fragile, introspettiva. Quasi una versione laptop di Cocorosie o Bat For Lashes. Ma tutto ciò si può evitare: la sua musica va presa al contrario, non facendo caso ai dettagli. La melodia è il centro di tutto. The Present è invece il nome del progetto di Rusty Santos con Mina e Jesse Lee di Gang Gang Dance e White Magic. In base ad un sillogismo, Rusty Santos dovrebbe essere un bravo musicista. Ha prodotto per tra gli altri: Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Ariel Pink e GGD. La trama musicale è proprio quella: una ragnatela impalpabile di suoni e rumori di chitarra, tastiere e percussioni. Ma qui, quel contrasto abbagliante tra organico ed artificiale, esce ancora di più. Li definisce flussi di coscienza registrati. The adjectives used to describe Soap&Skin are often of the romantic type – endured, ice-cold, fragile, introspective. An almost laptop version of Cocorosie or Bat For Lashes. But all this can be avoided: his music should be enjoyed back to front, without dwelling on the details. The melody is at the centre of everything. The Present is the name of Rusty Santos’s project together with Mina and Jesse Lee from Gang Gang Dance and White Magic. Therefore, according to a syllogism, Rusty Santos should be a good musician. He has been a producer for, among others, Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Ariel Pink and GGD. The music texture is this: an impalpable spider web of sounds and noises made with guitars, keyboards and percussions. But this time that dazzling contrast between the organic and the artificial are more blatant than ever. According to his own definition - recorded streams of consciousness.

Without the useless hue and cry, Marlene Kuntz have established themselves thanks to an irreproachable musical consistency and credibility as one of the most important Italian rock bands of the last two decades. Even this year Club To Club’s programme and its preview give space and visibility to some of the artists who have taken part in PiemonteGroove, a project designed and coordinated by Regione Piemonte and Associazione Culturale Situazione Xplosiva aiming at promoting the Piedmontese dance/electronic music scene (www.piemontegroove. com). Together with passEnger + xluve and Davem’s experimental techno character, Federico Gandin’s sound skills, Francesco Stella’s deep accents and Vaghe Stelle’s psychedelic ones, the playbill comprises young producers with international recognition such as Rills and Step, as well as the most different styles, from De La Cuerva’s breaks to di Ale Di Maggio’s funky house, from Repeater’s global-tech attitude to Dr.
No’s lounge music, from ConiglioViola’s hybrid language to Giorgio Valletta’s eclecticism, all representing a scene worthy of being recounted also during this edition.
