CLEAN SWEEP FOR CLUB HELENSVALE AT THE 2018 BOWLS AUSTRALIA AWARDS NIGHT

News from

AROUND THE GREENS To say Club Helensvale was successful at this year’s Bowls Australia Awards Night is a complete understatement! We walked away with 3 from 3 awards. It was a magnificent night for our Club. What an epic night of bowls achievements! On the night of Thursday 26th October, Bowls Australia held their annual Bowls Awards Night at The Mantra on View, Surfer’s Paradise. There was an array of talent on display including some of our very own. We had Geoff O’Meagher up for Volunteer of the Year, Jessie Cottell for U/18 Female Player of the Year and Brett Wilkie up for International player of the year. We are very proud to announce that all three of our nominees won their categories. Congratulations to Geoff, Jessie and Brett on all your achievements and your win! Well deserved for all.

Massive congratulations to QLD State Champ of Club Champ pairs team of Brett Wilkie and Aron Sherriff and fours team of Sam White, Mark Casey, Mat Lucas and Aron Sherriff who took out top spots in each discipline. Both our pairs and fours teams played exceptionally well and earned their first place win! Well done Hawkies we are super proud of you!! We have a date set for our annual Bowls Presentation Night. December 1st will be the night we celebrate our Hawkies achievements over the 2017/2018 season. Be sure to grab yourself a ticket, and enjoy a two course meal . Good luck to Georgia, Aron and Nathan, we are sure you will do us Hawkies proud.

October 31st marks our first week of Jack Attack night bowls. This event runs for six weeks and attracts quite a number of participants with both bowlers and non bowlers. It follows a quick and exciting format of bowls . With its quick format its the Lawn Bowls version of TWENTY20 cricket - for all the cricket fans out there! Congratulations to two of our Hawkettes, Amanda Haevecker and Sarah Duffield who teamed up to win the Ladies Gold Coast District Pairs competition that was held at Coolangatta Bowls Club from 29th - 30th September. It was a nail biting battle going into the last end with the Helensvale girls down 19-16. Sarah played a cracker of a bowl to trail the jack back for three and with Amanda’s final bowl siting in for fourth shot saw them come out on top beating the Broadbeach duo. Well done girls on this awesome achievement! We are very proud of you both! In junior news we had a number of our academy stars play at this year’s Pine Rivers Junior Senior Day. It was a successful day with one of our stars Jessie Cottell taking out top spot with her partner Brendon Egan from Enoggera. Well done also to

COACH’S CORNER Drawing to a Spilled Jack

Bob Hill

There can be many occasions in the course of a game when a jack is touched by a bowl and so moved off the centre line. Hence the term ‘spilled jack’. On many greens it is not uncommon to see a spilled jack travel up to a metre or more off the centre line.

Wherever the jack may come to rest it should not cause concern to the player who has established reference marks. After calculating the distance the jack has moved, carefully assess the changed line from the original focus point. If the jack is within a metre of either side of the centre line, be careful of length control because the rink normally will run faster for the last 5 metres near the ditch, since this is the area continually walked on. A draw into the ditch is a wasted bowl! Should the jack finish near the side boundary line, give extra thought to line and length. The bowl originally must pass over grass that has had very little use and thus will be a little slower, but for the last 5 metres, if near the ditch, will run faster. One must if possible play the widest drawing hand for this shot, as you have less chance of ditching with the wide draw.
