AROUND THE GREENS AUSTRALIA DOMINATE NZ; WORLDS TEAMS ANNOUNCED; OUR NEWEST CLUB CHAMPS CROWNED! Our Club hosted the 2020 Trans Tasman Series between Australia and New Zealand here on Tuesday, 4th February (with a practice day for both countries on Monday, 3rd February). Everything ran very smoothly and the event was enjoyed by both players and spectators. Our own Hawks players Aron Sherriff and Lynsey Clarke were part of the Jackaroos teams who won the Women’s Series 3 – 0, the Men’s Series 2 – 1 and the Overall trophy 5 – 1. A very successful event for the entire Australian team! Upon the completion of the Trans Tasman Series, the Bowls Australia selection panel met to compile the

ten strong contingent set to hold Australia’s hopes in the upcoming World Bowls Championships. In exciting news for our club, Lynsey Clarke and Aron Sherriff were announced in the prestigious sides, with Lynsey selected at Lead in the Pairs and Second in the Fours, while Aron will skip both the Triples and Fours combinations. Adopted Hawk Kelsey Cottrell was also selected for Australia, while Tahlia Camilleri has been selected for the Maltese side.

World Championships which we will host from 23rd May – 7th June, with the first weekend of finals action to be held on our showpiece Green 3. These finals will include Men’s Triples, Men’s Pairs, Ladies Singles, and Ladies Fours. I can’t wait for all those people from across the World to see our fantastic Club, play on our amazing greens, and meet our great members. So proud. It will definitely be a big buzz to have the Bowls World’s Pinnacle Event right here on our doorstep.

Bowls Australia have announced that there will be 36 competing countries and over 360 athletes and officials taking part in the

The Premier League, Q7’s, and Summer Nines interclub competitions are well in to their respective seasons. With four rounds to go in

PLQ our Premier team sits in third with our Reserve team leading their ladder. DON’T FORGET we’ll be hosting the finals series of this event right here on the weekend of the 14th and 15th March! I’m sure it will be another fantastic spectacle with great teams, sportsmanship, and bowls skill sure to be on display. Our six Q7’s have had some great results as well with all six sides still chances of making finals with four rounds to go. In our next edition I look forward to reporting on our teams who have made finals! And our two Summer 9’s teams have also had a couple of rounds played as well as a wash out game, but both sides have enjoyed some victories so far. Keep it up Hawks! The final of the men’s and ladies fours championships were played out in February. For our ladies it was the team of Gail George, Ann Holmes, Fran Ryan and Audrey Wheeler who reined supreme (our cover girls) with a gutsy, hard fought 24 - 12 victory over Chris Leeden’s combo of Angie Nobbs, Judith Snow

and Sandra Johnson. Chris’s team jumped out of the block early, however Audrey’s girls worked hard to string ten ends in a row together through the middle stages of the match to put themselves in the box seat. A fantastic final! For the men, our newest club champions are – Matt Bell, Reed Burgess, Darren Christie and Rohan Wilson after they won their championship final with a 31 – 20 victory over Brett Wilkie, Nic Gosley, Jayden Christie and Matt Lucas. Some high scores and terrific bowls were enjoyed during this ding-dong battle. Congratulations lads. Best of luck to both of our Fours Winners for the Champion of Champion stages later in the year. We look forward to cheering you all on. The sixth installment of our popular Jack Attack night bowls will commence on Wednesday, 4th March and run for six weeks. Always a fantastically fun tournament for all involved, please see Lynsey in the bowls office if you’d like to register a team for this season (1 bowler and 2 non-bowlers required).

Aron Sherriff will be recommencing his Thursday members coaching sessions starting from 5th March. This will be a 9am – 11am circuit training setup, 12pm – 3pm time slots available for one on one coaching (30 minute bookings), and 3.30pm – 4.30pm Hawks Junior Academy training. If you feel like your game needs some tweaking, or you’d love some advice, pop along and see Aron – he’s here to help! The Gold Coast Tweed District will be running an Umpires Course on Sunday, 29th March and Sunday, 5th April (please see attached.) We would love to see some more of our members become umpires! If this sounds like something you’d like to do, please see Lynsey or Pat Reely to register your interest. ENJOY YOUR FIRST MONTH OF AUTUMN EVERYONE - GO HAWKS!

CHAIRMANS REPORT First of all let me begin by congratulating our Hawks who as part of the Jackaroos teams took out the Trans Tasman Series in February. The event was such a fantastic success with Australia winning both the Men’s and Women’s Series and winning the Overall trophy. Great achievement for the entire Australian team, we couldn’t be more proud and it was great to see world class bowls on our greens yet again.

throughout the 12 days of competition including the host venue for some finals events. The event is free to all spectators so ensure you put it in your calendar - you don’t want to miss this once in a lifetime event held right here at your club.

I’m sure you were all as thrilled as I was to hear the exciting news that our very own Aron Sherriff, Lynsey Clarke & honorary Hawk Kelsey Cottrell will represent Australia in the upcoming 2020 World Bowls Championships. Our Club is hosting events

Did you attend the Let There Be AC/DC held at the club last month? I hear it was a fantastic night of classic rock, with a soldout event once again. Keep your eyes out for our next live show, which I’m sure is just around the corner.

It is usually good policy when drawing to save, to draw on to bowls unless the position of the bowls on the head makes such a shot impossible. Remember that if you rest on the shot bowl, or second shot which may be one or two feet short you are sure to reduce the score to reasonable proportions. Playing the open hand requires that you play the perfect bowl, correct pace, grass etc, whereas drawing on to bowls usually offers several alternative chances.

It is wise to reflect that you are trying to save, not necessarily get the shot. It is also important for the skipper or the director to indicate clearly an object bowl to beat. Drawing ‘inside’ a bowl is much easier than drawing to the jack, but do not lose sight of the necessity to REACH the head. When in trouble short bowls cannot be anything but a nuisance, so the importance of ‘always be up when the shot is against you’ is paramount when trying to save, particularly when drawing on to bowls. If you are having problems with your technique don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from one of our coaches. Naturally, this assistance is offered to all bowlers.
