People, planning and particpation The best events on Cloud 9 Ranch are when people who work well together plan events for other to participate in. These types of events are almost always Ranch fundraisers for a good cause. All involved, whether planning or participating, are winners because the benefits received go right back into Cloud 9 Ranch. One of these events that have been proven on both levels, people working together for people to participate in together, is Casino Night. Over the last two years, Casino Night has been held during holiday weekends when it was the hope that there would be a high participation, thereby bringing in the highest amount of contributions that can be made to the Ranch for specific projects. Casino Night is a club event that is open to the entire membership. The Cloud 9 Cruisers plan the event, and many people not club members help with the event. It is held in the Clubhouse where “casino” type games are played with Cruiser Cash which you receive when you pay a $10 donation at signup. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL. From donations and club dues, each Casino Night has approximately $1,000 in prizes, which are all given away at a Cruiser Cash Auction held after 3 hours of playing the games and building your Cruiser Cash. Casino Night is not only a fundraiser; it is a way for the members of Cloud 9 Ranch to meet each other, to have a night of fun for a nominal donation, to enjoy a chance to be a part of something that is upbeat and doesn’t require anything but a night where you can experience a network of friends working together for the good of all. The Cloud 9 Cruisers decided to try Casino Night at a different time than a large holiday weekend. OCTOBER 6th (Columbus Day weekend) will be a trial weekend to see if participation will be as beneficial as it was during large holidays. Another change is that there will be a Pirate Theme, wth a lot of new ways to build your CRUISER $$$$. There will be a PLINKO board, horseracing is also a favorite – more races, more mystery drawings, AND A LIVE BAND that is ready to take your requests. There will be food available and the TEXAS HOLD’EM TOURNAMENT WILL HAVE A SESSION that Cruiser Cash will be awarded to those players. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE CLUBHOUSE AROUND 7:00 P.M. ON OCTOBER 6TH – THAT’S WHEN THE FUN BEGINS

The Rest of the story~ The Hidden Gems of Cloud 9 How many of you know the names of the people behind the scene that keep Cloud 9 running? By this, I mean the Maintenance staff. We’ll start with Steve Booth; he is always the first called and the last one to leave when there is a problem. It just adds to my enjoyment whenever I see his big smile and he always says “Hello, Mr.Kevin.” Then we have Halsey Taylor; he tests our water wells 7 days a week and with his many other responsibilities he still finds time to volunteer for many things on the ranch. He also helps our folks with his knowledge of ATV and camper repairs. He is very reasonable and honest. Then there’s Benny Collins; he is all over the ranch doing whatever he needs to do. He always has a story to tell me. He loves his grandkids so much he bought them a membership so they could come to the ranch to visit him. Ben Mitchell is a carpenter at the ranch; he and his wife Carmen both work at the ranch and he is working hard to finish the new cabins. Ben does the upkeep on other rentals and keeps them available. He and Carmen always volunteer all over the ranch and they always bring the family and have a good time. Dave Parvin is at the Garage; he is always working on some kind of Cloud 9 equipment or vehicle. When you talk to Dave about C9R equipment it’s just like talking to a grandparent about their children. He can tell you what he had to do to get it running and what he needs to do to keep it going. Chase Williams is one of a kind; he always steps up to do what the little ones love. He’s all over the ranch doing whatever needs to be done. He and Tressa are members and will soon have a new baby girl. I‘ve never seen him without a smile. He may be quiet but he will do anything you ask of him. We have some new maintenance employees that I have not gotten to know; Johnny Johnson, Darrell Wayne and I’m sure there are some new ones I may have left out. But I plan to get to know all of them and want to talk with them about how they feel about C9R. Mainly, I want to tell the maintenance department that I appreciate what they do for C9 and all us members. Kevin Willis~ Cloud 9 Ranch Board of Directors

Who is jim Crosby? Jim Crosby, Gas Station Supervisor, is a senior employee with a lot of life to talk about. I’ll do my best in this short article to tell his story and how he came to be an employee of Cloud 9 Ranch. Jim is an only child, born in Chula Vista, CA on May 30, 1938, to T.A. & Patsy Hensley Crosby. T.A. was in the Navy and served during WWII. He was aboard the aircraft carrier Lexington when it sank during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942. Surviving the battle, he returned to San Francisco. Jim can remember his Daddy’s homecoming as his first real road trip in their 1941 Ford. Jim stood up by his mother driving the entire trip. Jim’s parents were both from Arkansas and in 1950 they moved back. Jim loved Mountainburg, Arkansas, where this city boy was quickly introduced to country life. Jim said he was in “hog heaven.” Having a .22 and his own horse, Jim hunted everything that moved in the woods. That lasted three years, then a move to Kansas City had Jim enrolled in Wentworth Military Academy at Lexington, MO. One of his best memories was in the summer of 1956. He got to know former President Harry S. Truman while working a summer job as a parking attendant at the Club Garage in Kansas City. President Truman parked in the garage almost daily and Jim was his attendant. He remembers President Truman as a man with integrity who treated everyone with respect. Several of these stories are worth hearing, so ask Jim to tell you more about President Truman. In 1956 Jim enrolled at the UofA-Fayetteville, but college life was short-lived. Jim decided to join the Navy and told his friends. Six college buddies convinced him to go with them the next day to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps together. He did and then married a Marine while serving 4 ½ “uneventful” years during peacetime from 1957 to 1961. When discharged, Jim landed back in Kansas City. He has three children from that marriage, worked 30 years at Western Electric, retiring in 1991. But he didn’t stop working. After being hired by a salvage company who bought and disassembled the General Motors Leeds Plant, he then managed the Leeds Industrial Park near Kansas City for seven years, which is still at that site today. At age 50, after a divorce, Jim began a fitness regime with running, tennis and cycling. At his children’s insistence, Jim also kicked his smoking habit. Then Jim one day went on a blind date with Danita, his wife now over 20 years. They founded the Rubber Duckies International Touring Team and participated in numerous MS-150 cycling tours that took them from Wichita, TX to Grand Rapids, MI. During a biking tour, Jim and Danita were married in 1991, in Sedalia at a log cabin at the Missouri State Fair. The reception was attended by 4,000 State Fairgo’ers. The Rubber Duckies had a party they will never forget. In 2004, Jim and Danita first learned of Cloud 9 Ranch as guests of family members and visited several times, renting every size camper the Ranch had to offer. Becoming members in 2005, Jim was offered a Ranger position; the couple purchased a ‘79 Royals International (which they still own), and became fulltime residents at Cloud 9. His first job as a Ranger was running the gas station. Jim has seen several managers come and go and his job titles changed over the years. Many strange turn of events happen at Cloud 9 when it comes to employees. Jim, Head Ranger at one time hired Luke Long, who is now Head Ranger and Jim’s supervisor. Jim’s job is a small part of their life at Cloud 9, compared to his volunteerism. He is a First Responder, Firefighter, Conservation Committee member, and a member of Cloud 9 Cruisers Club, which Jim says keeps him busy during his spare time.

Jim and Danita are members of The Promised Land Church in West Plains and enjoy their church family and the Cloud 9 life. With 8 children, 19 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandkids, their lives are very full. Well, and, of course, let’s not forget the Pekingese, Minnie, who has her own swimming hole named after her at Sheriff’s Hollow. Minnie “expects” daily rides and sometimes goes to work with Jim. Jim chuckled when asked how members can help him in his job. “Show up earlier than 5 minutes before closing time would help.” “Seriously,” Jim says, “the gas station is not like where people come in and are obnoxious because their grass isn’t cut. They get their gas and go. There’s always a few that want us to make phone calls when something bothers them. That hasn’t changed over the years.” Jim’s big goal at Cloud 9 is a simple one. He said with a laugh, “One day I want to see the fireworks display instead of being down there lighting them. I’ve never seen it.” He wants to continue being useful as long as he is able and it doesn’t look like he’s got plans to slow down. I do believe next year we should arrange for Jim Crosby to enjoy the fireworks. We owe him that, don’t ‘ya think?
