Bloomin’

JUNE T

he June issue has always been one of my favourite magazines. It’s filled with so much love. June is the start of what I like to call ‘The blooming season’; it’s supposed to be May but we live in the UK and we all know to expect a full month of rain! It’s not just the cherry blossoms that bloom at this time of the year, relationships bloom, and we’re entering wedding season with open arms. Having a room full of friends, family and love is something we’ve been longing for, for the past 2 years, so whether you’re planning your own wedding or attending multiple weddings this year, (because there’s never just one), we’ve got you! Think of our wedding supplement as a guide to getting you down the aisle. This coming season also closes the year on education, and new doors begin to open for families. If you’re a parent who’s experiencing a little extra stress about choosing a new school, or your child is going into a new school year, you’re not alone. In fact, your feeling is more common than you may think — especially if your kids are younger. A whopping 80% of parents

claim that getting kids ready for a new year of classes leaves them with serious anxiety. Use the coming months to spend some time with your children before they head off into the big world of learning, this month’s education supplement shines the light on some fun activities, educational games and quality local schools for you to consider.

COVER INTERVIEW

HAILEY BIEBER Hailey Rhode Baldwin Bieber is the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin, Hailey ventured into modelling in New York City, creating a significant impression later down the line when she walked on the famous ramp at London Fashion Week. Now, she’s in demand as one of the most recognisable faces in fashion and pop culture.

“I’M SHORTER THAN MOST OF THE GIRLS. EVEN THOUGH I’M FIVE FOOT EIGHT INCHES,

I’m not a runway girl and I totally used to feel inferior to some of my friends. LOOK AT KENDALL, BELLA AND GIGI [HADID]… THEY’RE ALL TALL AND DOING EVERY RUNWAY.”

COVER INTERVIEW

“I’m proud of myself

FOR BUILDING A MORE COMMERCIAL CAREER THAT WORKED FOR ME AND BEING

confident about it. SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE I’M STILL FINDING MY LANE, BUT NOW I KNOW

I’m going in the right direction.”

H

ailey first signed with New York Agency Ford Models. She initially appeared in magazines such as Tatler, LOVE and V. Her first commercial campaign was for French Connection in 2014, just before landing her runway debut in October 2014, walking for Topshop. With that, it’s no surprise Hailey is an A-lister and fashion icon in her mid-20s. To date, Hailey has walked the runway for designers such as Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and more. Hailey Bieber might be at the height of her success in her career, and happily married to Justin Bieber, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t suffer the same anxieties as the rest of us, having to work through the impostor syndrome she’s felt working in the modelling industry. Despite gracing the October cover of Vogue Australia, Hailey opened up about what it’s like to be in an industry where your co-workers are Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. “My burn in the modelling industry has been slow, and I’ve had to learn to be okay with that,” she shared “I’m shorter than most of the girls. Even though I’m five foot eight inches, I’m not a runway girl and I totally used to feel inferior to some of my friends. Look at Kendall, Bella and Gigi [Hadid]… they’re all tall and doing every runway.” Bieber shared that she felt disappointed about her modelling career for a long time—until she realised, she could enjoy her own journey too. “It was disappointing until I found my own lane. I don’t look short in photos. You can make it work and not have to do runway, and

12 • CLOSEUP

I’ve done a good job with that,” she shared. “I’m proud of myself for building a more commercial career that worked for me and being confident about it. I’ve hosted a show, I done major American campaigns, and a bunch of other things that I’ve really enjoyed. Sometimes I feel like I’m still finding my lane, but now I know I’m going in the right direction.” Bieber began working on Rhode Beauty two and a half years ago, she took dermatology courses online as an entryway to exploration but becoming a skincare expert overnight wasn’t on her agenda “I think that taking the courses was just something I wanted to do for myself, honestly” she says. “It wasn’t for me to be able to sound smart or know what I’m talking about. I was just genuinely interested” she knew that she would need to build a team, and with that realisation, she’s given herself permission to work on her strong suit: the creative of the brand. Hailey acknowledged she’s somewhat fearful about the venture “the market is so busy and so saturated and I’ve had to obviously have confidence in myself and in our brand to really feel like it’s going to be something refreshing and different.” Bieber is aiming for an aesthetic where Rhode is the gateway to natural beauty and the main priority: allowing the products to feel “cool and attainable”, she says, “I was really intentional about creating images that felt like they were drawing you in, in a way that felt like it looks healthy, it looks real, it looks inviting”. Despite that hesitation, Hailey is preparing for a summer launch, and to say her fans are ready would be an understatement.

“THE MARKET IS SO BUSY AND SO SATURATED AND I’VE HAD TO OBVIOUSLY HAVE

While Hailey no doubt would have made it to the top all on her own, marrying mega pop star Justin Bieber certainly didn’t hurt. From friends to fiancés, the pair officially tied the knot at an NYC courthouse in September 2018. A year later, the Biebs and the blonde beauty held an over-the-top ceremony for their friends and family at a stunning resort in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina. “The thing that was really cool about our wedding was that it happened a year after we were actually married, and we had gone through so much together in that year, so the timing just felt so perfect and it was right and we were both in the right headspace physically, mentally, and emotionally.” Justin and Hailey first met in October 2009 on the set of the Today Show where Justin was performing. At the time, Hailey was allegedly one of Justin’s biggest fans, so her dad took her to the show and introduced them to each other. Their paths didn’t cross until 2014. At the time, Hailey was 17 and best friends with 18-year-old model Kendall Jenner, whom turned out to be one of Justin’s closest friends.

confidence in myself and in our brand

TO REALLY FEEL LIKE IT’S GOING TO BE SOMETHING REFRESHING AND DIFFERENT.”

“I remember me being, like, 19 and him being, like, 21/22 and us talking about the future and him being like, ‘I always knew I wanted to be married young,’ and I was like, ‘me too!’ and he said, ‘I always wanted to have kids young,’ and I was like, ‘me too!’” “We always talked about it for so long and we ended up together and married, but the longer we’re married, the longer I want to wait to have a kid,” she continued. “I think people were expecting we were going to have kids pretty fast.” Ultimately, Hailey and Justin are still trying to grow as partners before they commit to being parents. “I’m a baby!” she laughed. “Being married is already enough and a lot for me. I’m at the point now where I always was like, ‘I want to be pregnant by the time I’m 25,’ but then I also got to the point where I was like, ‘I’m not going to plan it because life has changed so much in this past year… you never what’s going to come at you.’” The model has also spoken about how important her faith is to her. Both she and Justin have said their Christian faith is central and grounds their relationship. She told a podcast: “I think, for me, meditation a lot of the time means praying. My beliefs are a very big part of my life, and my faith is a very big part of my life. “Being able to share that with each other – to have that bond of faith and spirituality is so critical for us” Hailey said. “It’s the most important part of our relationship, following Jesus, being part of the church community together. Its everything.” “I think being able to take all of the burdens I feel and being able to release that and pray about it, and to have my own conversation with God, and being able to let it go that way, is extremely important to me and extremely helpful.”

“Gave the extra dark tanning mousse a go and I absolutely loved it, it only needed one layer to develop into a lovely even dark tan, dried within 5 minutes and took 5 minutes to apply, it didn’t have an overly powerful scent either which is a bonus, overall 10/10 and will be using again!” -Annie M-

Our new premium tanning mousse is created to moisturise & hydrate your skin whilst developing a natural healthy glow!

“I’ve used self tan on and off for the last 20 years! I have always gone for the higher end, well known brands as its so important to me not to be orange or streaky! Hue Glow has honestly blown the others out the water, I used the extra dark mousse, easy to apply, no stains on the bedding and the vanilla smell made it so much nicer to wear while it developed!

“I can’t recommend this tan enough, there’s no smell, no stickiness, it goes on lovely and doesn’t sit in my wrinkles, I went for the dark and it was perfect for me and looked really natural”

Summer 2022 Make Up trends

Summer is by far my favourite season when it comes to make up trends. Teamed up with the fact that we have been hiding our faces under masks for the last few years, I’m excited to finally be able to share with you, this year’s Summer make up trends. Simply put, Summer ‘22 is all about the natural, but glowy look. You may be surprised at just how simple these make up looks are to achieve by yourself at home.

Bronzed Glowy Skin

If there is one thing we want to achieve when doing our make up this Summer, it’s beautiful dewy skin, because glowing skin means healthy skin. Using a liquid based bronzer is perfect for that subtle, natural, sun-kissed look. Unlike cream bronzer, the formula is light in texture and won’t ‘cake’ up or sweat off after hours of wear. Best of all, they’re perfect for people with mature or dry skin as they won’t settle into fine lines. Try applying with a damp beauty blender or even with your fingertips, under your cheekbones, along your forehead and a little on your nose.

Fluffy Brows

Fluffy brows aren’t for everyone, but you don’t necessarily have to go to the extreme. You could gently fluff them to create wellgroomed brows and this will add shape and lift your face instantly. Use a waxy eyebrow pencil or pomade to gently fill in strokes, using an upwards motion. Fix them in place with the help of a sculpting gel and they won’t budge all day. REFY Brow Sculpt £16

Milk Makeup Bionic Bronzer £23

Cream Blush

Glazed Lips

NARS Liquid Blush £27

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb in Glass Slipper £13.50

Blush is back and better than ever! Using a cream blush creates a soft, seamless look. And brighter colour choices like baby pink or peach are taking centre stage right now. The key to this look is to use less product on your brush and the placement is equally just as important. Apply the product to the apples of your cheeks and pull it into the temple.

20 • CLOSEUP

Masks off… lip gloss on! Although lip gloss in general is a beautiful all-rounder, clear gloss specifically is making a comeback. With 90’s nostalgia in mind, think Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell, team it with your favourite lip liner to create a fuller lip look.

HEALTH

Stretch TO SUCCESS

ALL THE

Whilst yoga may be intimidating to some, it does incredible things to the mind, body, and soul. Add these yoga poses into your daily routine for the ultimate wellbeing kick.

Gear

Here’s what to add to your basket to feel like a pro and kickstart your yoga journey! Yoga Block Poundland £2.50

Be careful not to overarch the lower back. Lengthen your tailbone toward the floor and reach back through your left heel.

Crescent Lunge (Anjaneyasana) Targets – Quadriceps, ankles, hip flexors, core stability, spinal flexion. The Crescent Lunge is great for beginners since you can easily modify it depending on your flexibility. Backing off the depth of the front knee will give you a less intense stretch.

Mini Steel Water Bottle Daisy Park £20

Medium Support Sports Bra H&M £9.99

You can increase the quad stretch by bending your back knee and pulling your foot toward your glutes. Yoga Matt Poundland £5

Camel Pose (Ustrasana)

Remember to keep your chest raised, your core engaged, your spine long, your chin tucked and your shoulders back as you drop your hands toward your heels.

Targets – Quadriceps, chest, abdomen, back. Bump up your energy by bending back into the Camel Pose. Ustrasana counteracts slouching, improves your posture and relieves lower back pain with a generous, heart-opening stretch.

PROTEIN CHOCOLATE & BANANA

Frosty

Bored of the same old protein bars and shakes? This healthy homemade Wendy’s inspired frosty recipe is about to shake things up… literally! (excuse the pun) Blend

Downward Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

Remember to release your heels towards the floor. Being on the balls of your feet will shift the trajectory of the pose forward instead of back.

Targets – Hamstrings, calves, achilles tendon, oblique abdominals. Downward dog stretches and widens the hamstrings, the calves, and the achilles tendon. In downward dog, your head is lower than your heart, so it has the benefits of inversions and improves the blood flow through your body. When incorporated into a weekly yoga practice, it may even help relieve chronic back pain. The pose also helps increase the strength of the external oblique abdominal muscles.

1 whole cup of frozen banana (frozen is key) 2/3 cup of milk (soy milk makes it extra creamy) 1 serving of chocolate protein powder 1 tablespoon of cacao powder 1 teaspoon of nut butter 3 ice cubes (optional if you want an icier texture)

Why am I not good enough? This month’s column is all about my dilemma! A problem shared is a problem halved because no doubt, someone else is going through the same rigmarole I am.

I

’m writing this whilst eating a 15 pack of Nutella Bunuelos because I’m triggered unpacking these feelings again. Let’s go.

My ex and I had broken up a while ago but, as you can imagine, it was not a clean break up. A few columns ago I spoke about my second-hand jealousy when his best friend proposed. It wasn’t really jealousy; it was nail biting anxiety his friends are beginning to settle down, so he’ll want to do the same and it won’t be with me. Mutual friends of ours said ‘there’s no way, he’s not the type, he doesn’t want to be in a relationship’, but no one knew him as well as I did. I knew he had a fear of being alone and of being left behind. We hadn’t spoken since February. I walked away, as the mental torment of him popping up every now and then was stopping me from healing and moving on. It’s unfortunate enough that my cousin works with my ex. He sent me a picture of them both with the caption “we miss you.” It stirred some emotion. Later that night I called my cousin, for the tea, excited that he’d opened up and spoken about me. My cousin, instead, blurted out that my ex was dating someone. I wanted to throw up. From saying that he missed me, (clearly not, my cousin was on a wind up) to then telling me he’s been dating someone else, I felt my world implode.

Me being me, I called my ex and asked him. He lied. Through. His. Teeth… and I believed him. Why wouldn’t I? My cousin clearly has a warped sense of humour. I felt relief. Fast forward to May and it’s his birthday. The phone rings. “I’ve just seen your ex having pancakes with a girl” Fly kick to the jaw this time, it really hurt. I already know the answer in my head. He’s seeing her and it’s serious. He’s in love and that’s it, he’s found the one and he’s forgotten about me and it’s all over. So, I called him (again). “If I’ve asked you a question, it’s because I already know the answer, so don’t lie to me.” Silence. “Did you spend your birthday with her? Did you go to a hotel? Did she go out with you and your friends? Has she met your family? Do you love her?” A resounding, but hesitant, yes. “I don’t want to make the same mistakes again. I’ve taken onboard everything that hurt you and I’m trying not to hurt her. I’m trying to be a better person.” The knife is firmly lodged in my back. It’s excruciating. My heart stopped and I tried to choke back the tears. “Ok thank you. I wish you all the best. Goodbye.” I broke down and fell to my knees. My stomach was in knots. My heart feels like it’s exploding. I wasted six years on a man who did more with someone else in 6 months. I suffered for days asking myself the same questions over and over again. Why am I not good enough? What does she have that I don’t? Why did he not treat me that way? I spiralled. So, I got in touch with Big Mouth’s brandnew resident psychologist, on why I felt the way I did. In a short Q&A, we dig deep into insecurities and egos.

Why do I feel so insecure now that my ex has moved on? “A breakup with a boyfriend is difficult enough, as you are grieving the loss of a person you shared a romantic attachment with, these emotions are so intense that they have been referred to by some as a feeling similar to addiction, in terms of the withdrawal we feel when separating from them. These feelings are likely to be intensified when we are informed that our ex-spouse has decided to move on with someone new. This is likely to bring feelings of jealousy that a new partner will get the ‘better side of him’ and we form a new insecurity that we weren’t good enough to have ‘that side of him’”.

How can I tell the difference between fear and reality?

“Due to the emotional difficulty involved with breakups, it is common for our thought process to become illogical and negative. We plant doubts in our head about our worth and the actual value of the relationship. We sometimes turn these irrational thoughts into a false reality, i.e., ‘maybe I should have tried harder, maybe he didn’t love me enough’. These types of thoughts can cause a downward spiral, THIS IS NOT REALITY! Your subconscious is trying to make sense of a difficult situation. Every relationship has its ups and downs, and people have their flaws. It is completely normal to overthink when first hearing they’ve moved on. Try to remind yourself that this situation is inevitable. Soon enough, it will be you moving on. One theory based around this concept is that our ancestors would fight for and protect what was theirs, this theory implies that when seeing an ex-partner with someone else, instinctively your subconscious thinks ‘he’s mine’, even if they no longer are. This results in an automatic release of emotions such as jealousy, anger and sadness even if you thought you had moved on.”

Why do I feel the way I do, even though I’d accepted the break-up a long time ago? “Your ex moving on with someone new is a hard hit on your ego. We often feel empowered by the idea that our expartner still has feelings for us or is struggling to let go, so when they eventually do, it can sometimes make you feel like the relationship has been forgotten, and your ex-partner holds no value for your relationship, or that this new person has something you don’t or is better.

Another reason why it can be a hard pill to swallow is seeing your ex move on when you haven’t. This can make you feel unwanted or left behind. Why haven’t I met someone? Maybe nobody wants me? It’s important to remember that it is not a race, there is no time limit for meeting someone, take your time and remind yourself that the right person will come.

In conclusion, you can be the whole package, at the wrong address. You can give someone everything, but if they’re not ready to receive it, it will make no difference. Him moving on did me a favour. It’s allowed me to make way for a better future, because the reality is, I would have been miserable if he’d stayed. He couldn’t love me how I needed to be loved, and vice versa. In the words of Donnie Brasco – “Fuh-gedda-boud-it”

Big Mouth xx

Today, it is common to keep in touch with your ex-partner through social media, or even try to ‘stay friends’, this is likely to turn awkward when they meet someone new. When you’re in contact with your ex, even though you are not together, you are still keeping that attachment alive. This means that when the time comes to sever all communication, it can feel like breaking up all over again. My advice would be to cut ties as soon as you can after a break-up to help yourself in the long run. Social media also makes it more difficult to move on as keeping tabs on your ex-partner and his new girlfriend is so accessible. Social media makes these situations worse, as the temptation to pry is too difficult to ignore. This can lead to the formation of unhealthy habits, such as becoming a little obsessive with their relationship. Doing this will only make you feel worse, but don’t worry, it’s completely normal, a study found that 88% of people keep tabs on their ex’s social media. Word of advice, stay off his accounts, what you don’t know won’t hurt you!”

TRAVEL

GREECE

It’s time to turn those dreams of Greek weddings into a reality. All those pictures you’ve seen in films or on postcards of sparkling turquoise seas, hidden hilltop churches and private beaches… your eyes do not deceive you, that’s the beauty of Greece right there! Weddings in Greece can be as ‘OTT’ or as laidback as you like. Choose to marvel in the splendour of a Greek wedding venue set on a terrace overlooking the ocean in Santorini, the pond-like waters and majestic island mountains laid out before you like a scene from a tale of Greek mythology. Or maybe you’d like your beach weddings in Greece to be as simple as some chairs laid out on the beach in Halkidiki.

PACK YOUR BAGS! You’re tying the knot

If you're recently engaged, congratulations! It's now time to turn your attention to planning the big day. Maybe that involves seeking out the best venues near you or lining up a brilliant photographer first. Or, maybe you're planning a wedding abroad. If the latter is up your street, we've rounded up the best destinations for tying the knot abroad, whether you're looking for sun and sea or to elope in the US.

ITALY

Italy is perhaps the most popular place in Europe for a sophisticated wedding. The venues across the majestic Amalfi Coast, as well as in nearby Naples, are worthy of the Hollywood A-List, but without the film set budgets. The region’s gorgeous coastline, with its colourful towns set into the towering rocks, impeccably kept villa gardens, not to mention the incredible food, are all ingredients that make you think of a film star’s wedding ceremony. Tuscany’s another favourite destination in the summer months, thanks to fields of sunflowers and enviable climate. For the ultimate Tuscan experience, rent Villa Medicea di Lilliano, an 11th-century wine estate with courtyards, vineyards, olive groves and swimming pools.

LAS VEGAS

Weddings and Vegas truly go hand in hand. The city that never sleeps needs no introduction. It’s big, bold and brash, the perfect ingredients for a classic style American wedding. Getting married in Vegas is a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list activity, that’s for sure. It’s surprisingly affordable, a wonderfully kitsch affair with wedding chapels, neon lights and Elvis impersonators for ministers. You can even do a drive-thru wedding in Las Vegas in a classic muscle car, for that unique ‘married in a diner’ vibe that works so well in the US desert. Follow in the footsteps of Frank Sinatra, Joan Collins, Britney Spears and many more, who have all tied the knot at A Little White Wedding Chapel.

FRANCE

Cross the channel for some of the world’s most beautiful venues, from five-star city hotels to grand châteaux. One of the most romantic places to tie the knot is Chateau De Jalesnes in the Loire Valley. Built in 1620, it has extensive grounds with a pool, room for up to 65 friends and family and lots of ceremony choices - will you exchange vows in the tiny domed-roof chapel, in an ancient stone hunting tower, in a chestnut grove on the lawns or beside the moat? If you're after a seafront setting, stunning Cap Estel in the south of France is unbeatable. Its glamorous white tiers look remarkably similar to a wedding cake, while inside there are elegant function rooms that can cater for up to 80 guests, award-winning restaurants and bedrooms with balconies where the likes of Marilyn Monroe have gazed at the Cote d'Azur.

HAWAII

The blissful Hawaiian islands are a celebrity wedding favourite, thanks to their close proximity to Los Angeles. The Royal Hawaiian Resort on Oahu is a pink palace which has played host to the rich and famous over the last 80 years. With beautiful lush gardens, a seafront setting and dozens of ceremony choices, like the terrace of the King Kamehameha Suite overlooking iconic Waikiki Beach, or the ocean lawn or coconut grove for larger celebrations. Classic wedding packages include flowers, legal documents and decorated location. You can even have a honeymoon registry here, so guests contribute to experiences such as a postwedding sunset cruise.

EDUCATION

WINCHMORE HILL

Recognising all-round

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION At PGHS, we offer pupils an excellent academic education in a nurturing environment. Girls can join the School at age 3 in our Pre-Prep Nursery and continue their education right the way through the Lower and Senior Schools to age 16, when they leave us to join their chosen sixth form. We believe PGHS is a truly fantastic school and it is not just us that think that! This year, in our most recent Inspection, the Independent Schools Inspectorate rated us as “excellent”, the highest possible grade. They recognised the incredible work that the dedicated teaching and support staff do to enable all of our pupils to reach their full academic potential in a safe and caring environment in line with our School motto By Love Serve One Another.

We loved the fact that it’s a cosy school with lovely staff who put the girls and their education at the centre of everything. 46 • CLOSEUP

Recognising an excellent school PGHS is an EXCELLENT school but what does that mean? ISI said: ACADEMIC and OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS • Pupils make excellent progress overall with teachers providing additional support outside lessons. • The knowledge, skills and understanding of all pupils is excellent. • Pupils demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. • In all lessons the attitude of pupils was excellent and they respond eagerly to meticulously prepared activities. • Pupils achieve at a high level beyond the curriculum in a range of activities. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT • The pupils are very self-confident and exhibit high degrees of self-esteem and self-reliance and selfdiscipline. • Pupils’ behaviour in and around the school is excellent. • Pupils form excellent and productive relationships with each other which the school facilitates through strong pastoral leadership. • Pupils have a good understanding that the decisions they make are important.

So, what do we believe helps achieve an all-round excellent education? Should my daughter join a girls’ school? We believe so. • The environment gives the girls confidence to be themselves. With only girls in the classroom and on the sports field, both intellectual and physical confidence can grow. • You can customise the teaching to suit girls. There are no distractions. • All leadership roles are held by girls. • The academic achievement for girls in girls’ schools is higher than for those in co-educational independent schools. Are numbers important? We believe so.

What should you be looking for in the school of choice for your daughter? From our own experience, we know that the road ahead is full of opportunities which are both exciting and daunting in equal measure. When considering your daughter’s education, whether she is about to start Nursery, join Reception at “big school”, or is entering Senior School in Year 7, you should fully consider all of the options available and determine what is important to you. When you have a tour of the school you will get a true feel of the school. At PGHS, we are here to guide your daughter along her way to success in an environment where she is well-known, understood and looked after as an individual.

PGHS has small class sizes throughout for reasons which include: • maximising the time a teacher can spend with each pupil; • ensuring that all work is marked in detail; and • enabling everyone to be both supported and challenged. Should my daughter join a school with clubs and teams? We believe so. We encourage high levels of participation in activities beyond the curriculum to ensure that all girls leave us with a wide range of skills to complement their academic results. All girls have the opportunity to be creative, musical, artistic and sporty. Is exercise at school important for my daughter? We believe so. PGHS dedicates a significant amount of time to physical activity to ensure that the girls are developing excellent habits for the future. We have exclusive use of the sports facilities at The Walker Ground and Years 3-7 swim at Southgate Leisure Centre. To maintain interest in the later years, girls in Key Stage 4 have lessons at Southbury Leisure Centre where they can play badminton, swim, trampoline, spin and so much more.

Should you come and visit us to learn more? We believe so! PGHS can offer your daughter an excellent all-round education, giving her the very best start to school life. For more information, to join one of our Open Mornings or to book a personal tour, please visit www.pghs.co.uk or call us on 020 886 1135.

Motherhood #NoFilter

Katerina talks all things motherhood, family life, relationships, work, and trying to do it all at once, with of course, #NoFilter @keepingupwithkaterina @keepingupwithmyclassroom As I’m sat writing this blog for June, I’m thinking about our Queen and her Jubilee. I’ve always been interested in the Royal family and always looked at the Queen as this quite serious, mysterious and gracious woman. Having watched a few episodes of The Crown, being madly obsessed with Princess Diana and now being a teacher and teaching my children about the Queen and the Monarchy, I feel as though my feelings towards the Queen have strengthened – even more so since becoming a mum.

imagine having to put your job role (which is a 24 hours, 7 days a week, no annual leave position) before any natural decision you might make as a parent. It must be hard, and actually, that serious and mysterious woman probably has had to deal with so much privately, that I know I would personally struggle with.

It made me think, I’m sure many of us would love to be Royalty if we had the chance – thinking about all the things they have that’s better than our own lives. But how about all the things in Thinking of our Queenie, (I love our lives that maybe the Queen calling her that), she is the epitome she had? We’re so quick to of the ‘working mum’. Regardless “Count it all joy, my brothers, when wishes compare ourselves to others, from of the help that you have at home, financial positions, career choices, whether it be having a nanny, living you meet trials of various kinds, bodies, houses, cars, the lot. Let’s start to focus on the good experiencing popping to the park for a little picnic with some in our journeys, even if they’re not perfect in our eyes, because, of the mums from your child’s class after school on a nice day, spoiler alert, nothing is perfect, we just have to make discussing the struggles of being a parent, any concerns about the best of it. your child, hoping they feel the same about theirs for reassurance, So, thank you Queenie, for 70 years and of course, what they’re cooking for dinner that night and how of being the ultimate boss! stressful it is trying to think of something different to cook. Imagine being such a high-profile figure in this society and having every part of your life and your children’s lives under scrutiny, not because you’re a reality star trying to hit the jackpot, but because you are the ruler of a nation. Imagine every silly mistake your children make being in the public interest,

Puritas. Veritas. Probitas. We are immensely proud of our school and our boys: they are our greatest ambassadors. Keblians are respectful, responsible, hard-working, fun-loving and well-rounded children, who thrive in a school which inspires and supports them to discover their strengths, take risks in their learning and challenge themselves. At Keble, we encourage each boy to think independently, to be continuously inquisitive and reflective. We are proud of our ethos and our core principles; Puritas (Consideration for others. Self reflection) Veritas (The importance of honesty. Keeping promises. Being selfreliant/resilient) and Probitas (Respecting the rights and property of others. Working hard) These are at the heart of everything that we do and believe in as a school community and we encourage all our staff, parents and boys to be aware of them and uphold them every single day. We value each individual pupil, helping them to uncover and nurture their talents, whilst celebrating their achievements. As a result, our boys move on to their senior schools with the confidence and the self-belief to build on their own strengths and enjoy success both academically and in other pursuits. But don’t take our word for it. We invite you to come and see for yourself by booking a visit so that you can meet our highly-motivated boys and staff – and experience the warm, inclusive atmosphere of our school environment. Including helpful questions and answers, this handwriting book provides reassurance whilst supporting your child’s learning at home through a fun and motivating way. Combining useful English practice with engaging, colourful illustrations, this handwriting practice book helps to boost your child’s confidence and develop good learning habits and skills for life. Each fun activity is designed to give your child a real sense of achievement.

From #1 international bestselling author Jeff Kinney, Greg Heffley and his family hit the road for a cross-country camping trip, ready for the adventure of a lifetime. But things take an unexpected turn in the fifteenth fantastically funny Wimpy Kid as the Heffley’s find themselves stranded at an RV park that’s not exactly a summertime paradise. When the skies open up and the water starts to rise, the Heffley’s wonder if they can save their vacation— or if they’re already in too deep.

No Worries is an interactive selfcare activity book for children aged 7+ to colour and doodle their way to happiness, calmness and confidence. The encouraging and simple activities and exercises tackle anxiety, sadness and stress; children will enjoy using their creativity to combat negative feelings, understand why they feel worried and how to put stress back in its place through writing, colouring, doodling and drawing with the help of the quirky illustrations along the way throughout the pages.

When Tomas discovers a strange old tree at the bottom of his grandad’s garden, he doesn’t think much of it. But he takes the funny fruit from the tree back into the house – and gets the shock and delight of his life when a tiny dragon hatches! The tree is a dragon fruit tree, and Tomas has got his very own dragon, Flicker. Tomas soon finds out that life with Flicker is great fun, but also very unpredictable… Yes, dragons are wonderful, but they also set fire to your toothbrush and leave your pants hanging from the TV aerial.

Years ago, the Emperor used dark magic to steal all the colour from the world. Now he keeps it for himself, enjoying its lifegiving power while everyone else must exist in cold shades of grey. That is, until a miracle baby is born – everything she touches turns to colour. But the child’s life is in danger from her very first breath. Soon the Emperor’s murderous Ripper Dogs and Black Coats come hunting. Can the girl and her adopted father survive in the forest – and what will it take to return colour and hope to the world?

Why Choose Mount House We have seven pillars of success

5. Foster Individuality and Self Confidence At Mount House we recognise that each student is unique and our aim is to encourage and develop this individuality, whilst nurturing any talents and building upon them. We also look to recognise and reward success, knowing that it leads to a growth in self-confidence.

6. Preparing students for Life 1. A Small School Mount House is committed to maintaining small class sizes. This is, undoubtedly, the best way to maximise the learning of each individual student. Everyone knows that a good teacher makes all the difference to a child’s enthusiasm for a course. All the teachers at Mount House are experienced, highly qualified professionals with a strong track record of success.

2. Strong Academic Performance Mount House has produced some excellent, and rapidly improving, public examination results in recent years. A vibrant classroom environment and an enriching academic and cocurricular programme ensures that students leave with a love of learning, confidence, a firm value system and fully prepared for the challenges of their future life.

3. Bespoke approach to Maximise Potential In the Mount House environment every child is motivated, enthused and supported to maximise their highest academic potential. Whatever their academic starting point, students are challenged with work that will extend and stimulate.

4. Serious about Co-Curricular Success Art, drama, music and sport promote individuality, personality, self-confidence, self-discipline and team work. All Mount House students will have compulsory lessons in these subjects until the end of KS3. Opportunities in choirs, orchestras, ensembles and school productions will be available to everyone.

52 • CLOSEUP

A Mount House education extends beyond the confines of the classroom. Our leadership programme begins in Year 7 and continues until they leave us to go on to university. Students are expected to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and other extra-curricular activities as they move through KS4. In the 6th Form, all students will take our unique ‘Life Skills’ course that will lead them through their subject choices and UCAS applications.

7. Outstanding Pastoral Care Mount House caters for those of all faiths and none. Its environment fosters mutual respect and tolerance. Mount House instils a sense of right and wrong and promotes excellent behaviour in all areas of school life. We provide a happy, secure environment where students enjoy their schooling and feel that they belong. Communication with parents is a high priority and the excellent relationships between school and home are a key factor in the school’s popularity; this was recognised by the ISI school inspectors. I would like to invite anyone who doesn’t yet know Mount House to come along to our Open Days on 25th June and 24th September, where we’ll be able to show you around the school and you can meet teachers and students as they demonstrate science experiments, drama, music, art and more. It can be challenging to keep kids occupied sometimes. Today's kids are spending a good chunk of their days on tablets, phones and other electronic devices and finding apps that provide kid-friendly, developmental content in bite-sizes pieces can be difficult. Curious about Primary Maths?

Sara Tilley from Curious Maths shines a light on the best primary maths practice

Primary maths is more important than you might think. It provides the foundations for secondary maths to be built on and if those foundations are not solid then maths becomes trickier and trickier. It’s at primary that children form their ideas about how good a mathematician they are, and these attitudes can stay with them for life. I’m primary maths consultant and have worked in Enfield schools for 23 years. Put simply, I teach teachers how to teach maths. Primary maths is taught differently now to when we were in school – it’s moved away from pages of calculations and silent classrooms. I teach teachers how to make maths more practical, engaging and accessible, so the learning sticks and children enjoy maths. When the pandemic hit parents were thrown into supporting their child at home and I realised that parents need more support. Life is ‘back to normal’ now but many children have gaps in their learning and schools are simply running out of time to teach the full curriculum. This inspired me to create ‘Curious Maths for Parents’ subscription service – a one stop trusted website, for parents, to show them the best primary practice so they can replicate it at home with their child. The subscription package includes a growing library of 68 videos, organised into ‘how to teach’, ‘definition’ and ‘maths games’ video collections. Also included are maths resources and access to my private Facebook group. It’s easy to use, available on demand and gives parents the confidence to fill those gaps and be part of their child’s learning journey. As a teacher, I know the impact great support at home can have.

FOOD

Cook’s tip To peel a kiwi fruit, it’s best to top and tail first, then remove the skin using a vegetable peeler (this works best on firmer fruits). Alternatively use a sharp knife to cut downwards, around the fruit.

Gold kiwi and lime

TRAYBAKE Vegetarian

Preparation time: 25 minutes + cooling Cooking time: 25 minutes Serves: 15-20

Ingredients 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 225g caster sugar • 3 British Blacktail Free Range Medium Eggs • 250g self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • ½ tsp fine salt • 5 tbsp whole milk • 4 unwaxed limes, zest

For the topping

75g unsalted butter, softened • 75g icing sugar, sifted • 150g soft cheese • 1 unwaxed lime, juice • 4 Waitrose Gold Kiwi fruits, peeled and sliced

56 • CLOSEUP

Method Preheat the oven to 180oC, gas mark 4; grease then line a 33cm x 22cm cake tin with baking parchment. In a large mixing bowl, use electric beaters to cream together the butter and sugar for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy. One at a time, beat in the eggs, then lightly beat in the flour, baking powder and salt until just combined. Add the milk and zest of 3 limes to the bowl and beat gently until just combined. Tip into the cake tin, level the top, then bake for 20-25 minutes

until golden and risen, and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Set aside to cool in the tin. For the topping, use electric beaters to beat the butter and icing sugar in a mixing bowl for 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Beat in the soft cheese until combined to a thick, creamy frosting, then beat in the lime juice. Spread the frosting all over the cake, then arrange the kiwi fruit on top. Scatter over the remaining lime zest and slice to serve.

Cook’s tip

No-churn avocado & lime

ICE CREAM

If you freeze the ice cream for longer than 8 hours, you will need to remove it from the freezer and leave it at room temperature for 10-15 minutes until it reaches a good consistency for scooping.

Preparation time: 20 minutes + freezing

Method

Serves: 6-8

Put the avocado, condensed milk and lime zest and juice in a small food processor and whizz until smooth and combined. Scrape this into a large mixing bowl.

Ingredients 1 Waitrose & Partners Perfectly Ripe Extra Large Avocado, flesh scooped out (about 200g flesh in total) • 397g can condensed milk • 2 unwaxed limes, zest and juice • 300ml whipping cream

Recipes and images courtesy of Waitrose. Thousands of recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com

Put the cream in a second mixing bowl and use electric beaters set to a slow-medium speed to lightly whisk until just holding soft peaks. Gently fold the cream into the condensed milk mixture, 1/3 at a time, trying to retain as much air as possible in the mixture. Tip into a freezerproof container (about 1 litre in volume) and freeze for 8 hours, then scoop into bowls to serve.

WHAT’S ON FILM REVIEW

The seemingly endless scroll of Netflix’s treasure trove of terrific shows and movies can be more than a little paralyzing when trying to choose something to watch. If you’ve just finished a good series and need a new one to fill the void, Close Up is assembling a monthly list of the best TV shows currently available on the streaming service, from classics of yesteryear to the hottest new titles. Below, we’ve rounded up the best shows on Netflix right now, so you can binge-watch without having to hunt for the right title.

1 2 3 GOD’S FAVORITE IDIOT

MAN VS BEE

SEASONS: 1

When lovable, but bumbling dad Trevor lands a new job as a house sitter, his first assignment is a luxurious mansion filled with priceless artwork, classic cars and an adorable dog called Cupcake. But when a bee lands on the scene, can Trevor keep everything under control, or will their raucous rivalry just lead to increasingly disastrous consequences? See the chaos unfold in this watchtogether zippy comedy series of short-sized episodes.

Mid-level tech support employee Clark Thompson finds love with co-worker Amily Luck at exactly the same time he becomes the unwitting messenger of God. Sweet Clark seems like the last person God would tap to fight evil. He’ll need his office crush and good pals to help spread the word and save the world.

SEASONS: 1

MY NEXT GUEST NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION WITH DAVID LETTERMAN SEASONS: 4 David Letterman returns to the host seat with My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, combining humour, curiosity and indepth conversations with extraordinary people. The new season will welcome another round of guests, including Cardi B, Kevin Durant, Billie Eilish, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ryan Reynolds, and Will Smith.

NETFLIX 4 5 6 VIRGIN RIVER SEASONS: 4 Netflix has unveiled a new look at Virgin River along with confirmation season 4 will arrive in July. That’s not all, Netflix has answered a huge mystery left over from last season with its synopsis – Annette O’Toole’s Hope survived the car crash. While Virgin River has already been renewed for a fifth season, Alexandra Breckenridge confirmed earlier this year that there would be a delay in filming more episodes.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY

PEAKY BLINDERS

SEASONS: 3

It’s been a long and windy road for Peaky Blinders headed up by Cillian Murphy and the series, at least, will be coming to an end with the arrival of the final season. All is not lost, however, as a movie is on the way too. Netflix UK won’t be the recipient of the final season of Peaky Blinders until either late 2022 or 2023 based on previous editions of the series. Until then, you’ll be able to watch the newest season exclusively on the BBC iPlayer.

After putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse. But after a brief moment of celebration, they realise things aren’t exactly how they left them. Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart and stylish, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off. All they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong.
