EDITOR'S LETTER

Let’s

GIVE BACK It’s fair to say that Summer is officially over! You might be sad to be packing away your shorts and sandals, but bring on the trench coats and knee high boots, my favourite style season of them all! With Autumn in the air and the weather turning crisp, we must praise those doing everything they can to support the homeless. We caught up with TOWIE’s Georgia Harrison, who is volunteering with Buses 4 Homeless, a charity that offer food, deodorant, tampons, baby wipes and so much more to help support those in need. Being in lockdown for 3 months may have been difficult for some, but embracing the time spent with family is what’s important. This month’s cover star, the incredible Katie Piper, talks all about her lockdown experience with her family, raising awareness for the Katie Piper Foundation and how embracing her faith gave her the strength to help others on her latest venture, host of BBC’s Songs of Praise. We may not be able to be in big groups or go to the pub past 10pm, but we can always check in on our neighbours, give what we can to our charities and to our community and do our part, big or small, to make our world a better place.

COVER INTERVIEW

Katie

PIPER Katie Piper has made her first appearance as a presenter on Songs Of Praise where she spoke to a farmer whose wife took her own life after a battle with mental health. The 36-year-old presenter, author, activist and model, first appeared on Songs Of Praise as a contributor with her mother Diane in a special Mother’s Day edition in March, in which she shared her experience of finding faith. Here, we caught up with Katie to discuss finding faith, behind the scenes emotions and how she coped through lockdown.

I really feel like it’s God’s Plan for me.

COVER INTERVIEW

Faith can be whatever you want it to be, in the way it works best for you.

Congratulations on becoming the new host of BBC’s Songs of Praise! Can you tell us a little bit about how the role came about for you?

You have been working extremely hard on podcasts, books, product releases and collaborations. Have you had any time during lockdown to spend with family?

Thank you so much, it really is a dream come true – and actually, without sounding ‘cliché’ – I really feel like it’s God’s Plan for me. It has given me a brilliant opportunity to travel the length of the UK, to meet some incredible people and hear their faith related stories. I am so looking forward to this new role with the BBC, and I can’t wait to give it my all.

I met a lovely man called David when filming in Wales. He had actually become a volunteer, helping his local church and mental health service for farmers, after the loss of his wife to suicide. He uses his faith to help others, and give to others. He has turned his grief into healing and help, and I admire that immensely.

I have had such great quality time with my family – it’s been wonderful to spend so much time with my two daughters. For me, it’s been a positive outcome of a very tough time for many. I am usually up early and home late working in London so it’s been really special to be at home for meal-times and bed-time. We were able to appreciate the simple things in life – lots of outdoor walks, crafts, and cooking together. We loved clapping for the NHS every Thursday as a family, and I am so happy the NHS have been applauded on the level they have – the real heroes. That said, technology has allowed me to continue working from home – I have discovered a new love for ‘Zoom’ for meetings, and I’ve been able to record a lot of great podcasts and do lots of writing.

Hearing such stories are sure to cause a strain on you emotionally, what helps you to find peace and clarity?

We love your book ‘Start your day with Katie’, what is your favourite affirmation from the book and why?

I really love listening to others, and learning from others. I have my own coping mechanisms for peace and clarity which include running, mindfulness exercises, weight lifting, meditation and reading. I think over the past decade, I have gradually learnt to find more coping mechanisms which is part of growing up and moving through life! But above all, I really enjoy hearing people’s stories – it’s something I’m so passionate about and ultimately guided my decision to launch my podcast, Katie Piper’s Extraordinary People. It’s literally all about different stories and how these amazing people overcame adversity, challenges and different events in their lives.

Oh wow – how to pick just one?! One of my favourite affirmations is, ‘worry is a total waste of time – all it does it steal your joy and keep you very busy doing nothing at all’. This is a quote which helps me every day, and I think will help others.

Is there a specific story that really resonated with you?

We know that faith is a big part of your life, what advice would you give to someone who is in the process of finding faith? Faith is a very personal journey, and I am very cautious to not push this on others. I would encourage them to find what works for them, and their way of life. For example, years ago I went to church a lot. I still go now, and encourage faith activities with my children, but I follow lots of faith accounts on Instagram for example. Faith can be whatever you want it to be, in the way it works best for you.

Do you have any other exciting ventures coming up before the end of the year? I have some amazing projects ahead, including working with Pantene, Asics and bringing out my very own product line, including a fragrance. So that’s hugely exciting and takes me into a new genre! I am as busy as ever with my charity, The Katie Piper Foundation. We have had to adapt during lockdown / COVID and have lost a lot of funding, so we are coming up with lots of ideas there. We are still as active as ever for the people we help with burns and scars, it’s just where BBC Songs possible a lot of the mentoring Of Praise and physio for example has Sundays 13.15pm had to take place remotely rather than face to face. It’s Katie Piper Extraordinary a challenging time for many People Podcast charities and we are Available to stream on no different. Apple, Spotify and other streaming services

The Smart way to look

AFTER YOUR SKIN YouTube sensation Niomi Smart has done wonders for awareness on how we can be more sustainable. Following the huge success of Smart Swap, Niomi is now launching her own Skincare range. Powering through these unprecedented times, she tells Close Up about her new and upcoming ventures.

Hi Niomi! It’s been such a crazy year, how has 2020 been for you?

Has sustainability and being eco-friendly always been a subject of importance for you?

It’s been absolutely crazy! I’m launching Smart Skin, started a yoga course (don’t know what I’m thinking haha) all at the same time. And I’ve moved house too! Doing a lot at once.

I wish I could say yes but actually no, I think it was something I hadn’t considered much about. It must be about 5 years ago now that my eyes were opened to how we need to look after our planet and have respect. Being more aware and more conscious. Our day to day decisions can really impact that. I would love to say I lived my whole life being eco-friendly and sustainable but it’s only as I’ve grown up as a person that I’ve understood that we all play a part and our decisions make a difference.

Can you tell us a little bit about your journey and how you start vlogging? I started about 8 years ago on YouTube. I had graduated from University, studying law, and I realised that law wasn’t the career path for me. Instead I somehow fell into this world of social media and back then it wasn’t what it is today, it was very different, more like a hobby to be creative and talk about the things I am passionate about like beauty and a plant-based lifestyle. Over the years it has changed, I still only talk about my passions, beliefs and ethos but it’s more about the well-being like conscious beauty, sustainable fashion and learning to love yourself. Its been quite a journey and it’s opened so many doors.

Smart Swap was hugely successful, do you think industries and brands themselves are becoming more conscious on how they’re spending? Absolutely. I think now, there’s such a big loud conversation about fashion and our choices with our purchases. I created Smart Swap because I realised that fashion and the high street is just so unbelievably convenient that we have almost been programmed to not think twice about purchases. We kind of lost that connection to fashion and our style and sustainability because clothing is seen as disposable. So Smart Swap came by because I wanted to encourage people to think more about their clothing and if there’s nice things in your wardrobe that you don’t love, don’t think about throwing it away think about ‘ok, well, someone else can find so much joy from that piece’. So, the event Smart Swap is this lovely evening where you can have a glass of champagne, bring clothes you no longer love and get swapping. Your next big venture is Smart Skin, what made you want to develop your own skincare brand? I’ve been living a plant-based lifestyle now for many years so skincare being cruelty-free and vegan is incredibly important to me. I just felt like I wanted to create my own brand that was exactly what I was looking for. It ticks all of the boxes, everything I’m passionate about; being vegan, made in the UK etc. I came up with a list of things that I love and I created it. I’m so happy and proud of it and one of the most important things with it is that it actually works, so that’s why it took 2 years to create the formulas. Is there anything else coming up for you, are there other areas of sustainability that you want to raise awareness for? My other venture that I’m working on is my yoga teacher training course, and even though that’s not specifically in the area of sustainability, the whole purpose of developing your yoga practise is to become more aware of your surroundings. We all need to really respect ourselves and the planet. So, it’s been great to align the skincare brand with that.

YOGA FLOW In today’s world we do a lot of sitting in front of a computer, driving and lack of exercise which can all be detrimental to the glutes (the butt muscles). It can lead to “gluteal amnesia” (a.k.a “snoozy glutes”) – meaning our glutes are overstretched, underused and underdeveloped. The muscle group stops firing, causing other muscles to compensate and producing issues like back and knee pain.

alignment. We will run through a variety of postures and flows to hit this muscle group from all angles and really get your lower body firing. We'll have some fun in the process too! This flow has been taken from my NEW app, Hannah Barrett Yoga (http://onelink.to/hannah-yoga-app), and is part of the Yoga Strength Fundamentals series. At the moment you get access to ALL content for 14 days for FREE.

If this sounds familiar, or if you just want a strong and toned derrière, this flow is for you! It is designed to to build lean and happy lower body muscles with proper activation and

BRIDGE LIFTS WITH BLOCK SQUEEZE

DEADBUGS

These hit the glute max, medius and the hamstrings!!

Start on your back with the knees over hips and shins parallel to the floor. Bring the arms straight up ahead of you. Keep the spine neutral so there is a gap between your lower back and the ground – be mindful that the spine doesn’t overarch, try and keep the gap the same size. As you move, the core is strong, lower belly hugging up and in, pelvic floor lifted and ribs drawing down. Slowly exhale and extend opposite arm and leg, inhale slowly back to the start. Repeat ten times on each side. Be mindful that your stomach doesn’t dome and that you can control your abdominals. Modify by keeping the knee bent and just dipping the toe down or keeping the opposite foot on the floor.

If you don’t have a block then a cushion or box with do. You want the spine to be long, core engaged as you move. Squeeze the block between the calf and thigh (hello hamstring!). As you exhale lift the hips, keeping the pelvis neutral and hips aligned, inhale to slowly lower back down. Repeat ten times on each side!

22 // Close Up Magazine

Great for the core and hip flexor strength!

HEALTH

LEG PULSES

SIDE PLANK LEG RAISES

Changing the position of the leg hits the glutes from all angles. You will REALLY feel this sequence in the butt!

Really targets the glute medius which is one of the main pelvic stabilisers and such an important muscle.

Start in all fours with wrists under shoulders and knee under hips. Extend the right leg back straight behind you, use the glute to lift the leg and keep the pelvis neutral by hugging the lower belly in. Pulse the leg up and down ten times (an inch or so) using the glute, not tipping in the pelvis.

From tabletop with knees under hips and wrists under shoulders, lift the right arm opening the body to the right hand side. Stack the hips and shoulders and lift the waist away from the floor, engaging the core. The left hand grounds down and slightly dials out to stabilise the shoulder blade on the back. Turn the right toes slightly downwards (internal rotation) and exhale as you slowly lift the leg as high as you can without moving the pelvis. Inhale to release back to the mat. Repeat 10 times on each side.

Now bend the knee to 90 degrees and take 10 more pulses. Now bring the knee down and directly out to the right hand side keeping the 90 degree angle at the knee. Pulse ten more times, keeping the core hugging in. End by either holding the knee still or by extending the leg out. Stay here for five deep breaths!

SIDE PLANK CRUNCHES Hit the glutes and obliques with this fiery side plank variation. In the same position as side plank leg raises, reach the right arm over the ear so you’re drawing an imaginary line from your fingers through to the right toes. Keeping the core engaged and pelvis stable, bring the elbow and knee in towards each other as you exhale and inhale to lengthen back out. Repeat ten times on both sides.

INTERVIEW

From Beaches

TO BUSES

We caught up with Ex on the Beach star Georgia Harrison to discuss volunteering with Buses 4 Homeless, a brand-new Eyelash Serum and her aspirations for 2021. Hi Georgia! 2020 has been one hell of a year, how’s it been for you? Hi! Well, it’s definitely been up and down for everyone, I’ve been lucky enough to establish a business in the beauty industry which is my new eyelash serum! I’ve also spent time with my family but like everyone else, there are negatives. I’m so grateful for the business though I know so many people have been affected financially by what’s happened, but I’ve also realised that it’s definitely a time in my life where I want to do more for charity and other people. Congratulations on launching on your eyelash serum! Can you tell us a little bit about it? It will grow your eyelashes in under 4 weeks, and it’s been selling out within 3 days of it arriving from the USA! I had such a good reaction from my followers and I’ve realised the beauty industry is something I want to concentrate on. I can’t wait to do a launch party! Aside from eyelash serum, what else would you be looking to work on in the beauty industry?

It was fantastic to have Georgia with us for the day to raise awareness and donations for our project. Homeless people need our help, and we can’t do it without your support.

– Dan Atkins, Founder Ask me about lip-gloss or eyeshadow and I will make you look like a clown! Haha. But when it comes to eyelashes… I will definitely soon be manufacturing my own mascara and I would like to do a remover too and just really concentrate on growing natural eyelashes. Credit: Backgrid (Photographer: Brett Cove)

You faced a few challenges in your time in Marbella and now working with Buses 4 Homeless, tell us about your journey? I have been put in a position before where unfortunately, I have been left with nowhere to go, I have been homeless and I had to reach out to charities similar to ones like Buses 4 Homeless. It’s definitely something I can really relate to because I think there’s such a stigma around people being homeless and they’re looked

of Buses4Homeless

down on like “why don’t you just try to get a job” but what people don’t understand is, sometimes you can try your best and still get stuck in a situation where you really are on your own and I want to change that, I want people to not be judged. When you visit the homeless shelters and see the people and hear their stories, for me I know what it’s like and now I’m going to be that person who can help make it better for them. What is your involvement in the charity?

There are 4 Buses, one for sleeping, one for eating, one is specifically just for changing their mind set such as teaching them how to get a job and reiki which I’m a massive believer of. They help people who are willing to get themselves on their feet, but to see what they’re doing is amazing. It’s the most supportive charity I’ve ever seen. The 4th bus is the one they take around London as a soup kitchen, so coronavirus has really affected the way people can go into homeless shelters, they cant have tons of people in and out so this bus can go anywhere and people can wait outside so it doesn’t affect regulations. It’s not just food they are also offering deodorant, tampons, baby wipes even haircuts. What are your plans for the rest of the year? My main plans are to pursue acting, it’s something I really enjoy. Definitely as much charity work as I can do, I really want to try and give back for the rest of my life. I also want to move to America! I love it there. BLOG

Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! www.keepingupwithkaterina.com @keepingupwithkaterina Since becoming a mum, I have met and connected with so many different mums and mums to be and shared many experiences, advice and recommendations. You meet mums who have different approaches to parenting, single mothers, mothers of twins, mothers with similar anxieties and so on. Sometimes though, you meet mums who have struggles you couldn’t imagine, the pages that bring tears to your eyes when you look deeper into their family and their lives through those little squares, only imagining, but also trying not to imagine, what their lives must be like. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a very emotional person. I’ve always been an empath, but since having Rico, my emotions have been even more heightened to everything child related, thinking ‘imagine if that was Rico’ and remembering how grateful I should be for Rico’s health, for his eyesight, his hearing, him being able to breathe unaided to his ability to scream (even though sometimes I wish he wouldn’t). I connected with a lovely mum called Vickii on Instagram who is mum to two beautiful children, her daughter Zareiya and son TJ. Her son TJ suffers from a very rare condition called Menkes. After putting a poll on my instagram to ask what some of my followers would like me to write about in my blogs and columns and Vickii replied for more awareness on rare diseases in children, I asked her for some more information on Menkes, what it was, how it effected TJ and the effect it has on their lives as a family. After reading her reply, my eyes had welled up and I had a lump in my throat. Vickii’s positivity throughout her messages were so inspirational and humbling; I cant stop worrying when Rico comes home with a cold, it really does put into perspective the lives that other parents live, the constant worrying, battles and pain that you are unable to alleviate from your child.

It is easy to try to block out all the horrible things that are happening in the world, but how will anything ever change? Since talking to Vickii, I have managed to find out so much about Menkes, what children that have Menke’s suffer with and how to spot it in your young child. When you’re pregnant, you become fixated with the birth, what you need, how you feel, what to name your child, decorating their room etc, but no one prepares you for what might come, what happens if your child does have a rare disease, what to look out for and when to act. Luckily, Vickii’s motherly intuition kicked in when she noticed changes in TJ’s behaviour from a new born baby and wouldn’t stop until she had found out what was wrong with her baby and how she could help him. Without being educated on what’s going on in the world, how can we face them and change things? How can we help and support fellow parents? How can we understand the behaviours of children that we are all so quick enough to judge in the supermarkets or restaurants (I’m sure any parents with children who are on the autistic spectrum or have a child who suffers from ADHD can relate to this). TJ’s mum, Vickii, is raising money for the awareness of her sons condition, please visit her instagram page (@_these2andme) for more information and ways to donate, I know that I sure will! Until next time lovelies

Now Boots are offering the opportunity to gain points when you bring products back after use, yes you read that correctly! In partnership with beauty brand No.7, high street store Boots has just announced the exciting recycling scheme that will make disposing of hard-to-recycle beauty and health products easy and beneficial. The new scheme encourages customers to bring their empties into stores, even if they didn’t purchase the product from Boots. In return, customers will be awarded 500 Boots Advantage Card Points for every five products they recycle. However, it’s worth noting Advantage Card Points will be capped at 500 per day, even if you return more than five empties. All you have to do is scan your empty products on your mobile phone, via the Boots Scan2Recycle website, and take them to a recycling point at any participating Boots store. When ‘I Do’ becomes

AN EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME… We find out why Cater Express is the UK’s go to Wedding service.

Cater Express turns Wedding dreams into reality

The 5* star food from Cater Express is out of this world!

Mention the word “Wedding Planner” to any married couple and you will hear the name Cater Express. Edward W Shaw & Pamela Naidoo are the UK’s most famous wedding planners and event specialists. But they don’t just create events, they create unforgettable experiences. And because of this, they are much sought after and in high demand with an incredibly long waiting list, you will have to book them way in advance to get a spot with these experts. In 2018 they created their company, Cater Express, specialising in events planning and introducing the notion of “the events and weddings designer” to the British market. Lovers of detail, Edward & Pamela are famous for adding a tailored touch to their events and taking care of every detail to ensure everything is just perfect. We met Edward and Pamela at their Chiswick, London Office to talk about why they are so popular and sought after by eager future weds.

Pamela Naidoo is the UK’s Wedding Guru

“I think the essence of our success is to listen more and talk less. We understand that each couple has their own unique wedding dream and our job is to turn that dream into reality. We also have an incredible team of expert event specialists who are highly experienced at what they do with decades of experience”. “We listen to our client’s plans and their hopes, digest that information and mould that abstract into practice. Our inspiration has come from us travelling to many beautiful places all over the world, from Venice to Paris, we draw on what we know can work in conjunction with what our customers are looking for.” I wanted to know a bit more about what made them different from every other wedding planner and event company.

Renowned Wedding Planner Edward W Shaw being interviewed by the press.

Incredible, unique and creative decor

Cater Express has a wide range of bars for every event

“Well, firstly, we are not just wedding planners, we are also event specialists that execute the whole job from beginning to end by providing all the necessary services from catering and mobile bars all the way to entertainment etc. One of the biggest challenges couples face is having to deal with multiple vendors for their big day and they turn to wedding planners to arrange the overall wedding detail and coordination for them. However, at Cater Express we are a one stop shop from assisting with the wedding planning plus executing all the services on the day. Weddings are stressful already, so we ensure we run the whole day seamlessly and provide all the services effortlessly”. “We take our clients big day very seriously; it is important to us to ensure that the bride and groom is not worrying about anything on the day apart from enjoying this special day with their close family and friends creating memories. Our main responsibility is implementing a smooth process that provides transparency, professionalism and a hassle-free relationship” I was starting to wonder how much this would all cost, Cater Express is renowned for doing celebrity events including Ferne Mccann, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Top Gear’s James May, amongst many others.

“We are indeed very grateful for the constant demand! We believe that our approach is not from a business angle but more of a responsibility of scope that all comes down to one day, it has to be just perfect. At the same time, it needs to be affordable, reasonably priced and it must be in sync with what our clients have in mind for their magical day. I suppose we are easy to work with and we have the most amazing team behind us. Ultimately, our client’s happiness is everything, that’s what we work towards.” Tell me a bit about your award-winning food?

Cater Express delivered everything I dreamed of and we really appreciate all the hard work you guys did. You made our day more special than we could ever have hoped for, thank you!

“2 simple words, ingredients and Chef. We only provide the best of the best, our food is locally sourced, organic and supplied from Selfridges. It is cooked by our highly experienced team including one of our Chefs who is the private cook for David & Victoria Beckham.” I suppose that comes with a big price tag? “Well, actually we provide a premium service at pretty much the industry standard average prices. That’s why we stand out”

That is amazing. From what I’ve seen from your portfolio of – Lisa Clarke events, you guys know how to create magic, I am simply blown “The sad truth of the industry is that some companies will away looking at your past events. I can’t believe you can literally charge customers a lot more because of the word ‘Wedding’. do anything. This is quite sad really. Although we provide a premium service, “We don’t just do events; we create unforgettable experiences. we know that everyone’s budget differs, that’s why we feel We theme each Wedding as inspired by our clients and work it’s essential to work with our clients closely to achieve their towards their dream vision of the day, whether it’s a Blossom dreams, after all, everyone deserves a perfect wedding, it just Tree forest theme or a Winter Wonderland Christmas Wedding, doesn’t have to cost the earth.” we always go the extra mile to provide that necessary ‘wow’ Cater Express has won several awards of excellence and your factor that we know our clients and their guests will enjoy and reviews all talk of an exceptional service. LOVE-IN Choosing your honeymoon destination is one of the most pleasurable parts of wedding planning – you get to travel the world without leaving your laptop! We’ve rounded up the best honeymoon destinations to suit different priorities, whether you’re looking for an amazing all-inclusive holiday, a unique adventure or an affordable getaway.

QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA Why we love it: While Sydney and Melbourne may draw most of the overseas tourism, in-the-know Aussies have long been heading to the Gold and Sunshine Coasts in Queensland for their beach breaks. And aside from the sun-and-sand culture the country is famous for, Queensland has much to explore, from semi-deserted Fraser Island to the razzle dazzle of Brisbane, where the redeveloped wharves have become cultural and foodie hubs. When to go: June-October Where to stay: The W Hotel Brisbane has cool and quirky accommodation, as well as one of the city’s best restaurants, Three Blue Ducks – the breakfast buffet there is epic. If Insta-worth interiors are what you love, you have to check out The Calile – from the rooms to the rooftop pool, everything is immaculately designed. Outside the city in Maleny, Spicers Tamarind Resort is a soothing retreat known for its excellent Asian food and cooking school.

SIARGAO, PHILIPPINES Why we love it: Tiny, teardrop-shaped Siargao was voted best island in Asia last year, and it remains a favourite with travel industry insiders. It’s a well-loved surfing destination, but it’s also won fans as a less-obvious beach break location. The island is right on the cusp of hitting the wider tourist radar, so now is the time to go to appreciate its laidback vibe, idyllic white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. As well as blissing out, you can also go on trips to nearby islands, as well as to the enchanting Sohoton Cove, where you can swim with stingless jellyfish. When to go: March-September Where to stay: Nay Palad is the island’s only five-star resort, and is barefoot luxury at its best. The L’Osteria Penthouse is also worth a look, for its excellent location and pared-back, contemporary-chic aesthetic.

40 // Close Up Magazine

THE MALDIVES Why we love it: The Maldives are the most popular honeymoon destination for a reason. Actually, make that several reasons: soft white sands; crystal-clear waters; swaying palm trees. If you love nothing more than chilling out on a beach with a good book, you’ll be in heaven, but there’s also plenty to do if you prefer to be active, from cookery schools to diving, catamaran tours to paddle-boarding. What’s more, the country’s resorts tend to have excellent dining options, making The Maldives one to consider if you’re looking for a foodie honeymoon destination – the top resorts are good at luring leading chefs. As they’re set on private islands – so you can’t easily go off-resort for dinner – packages tend to be all-inclusive. When to go: November-April Where to stay: Kuramathi is a serene and stylish resort with beautiful accommodation – the Deluxe Water Villas are our top pick for privacy. There are nine à la carte restaurants, three buffet restaurant and six bars. LUX* South Ari Atoll is perfect for a tranquil escape, and has innovative dining options including a gourmet night market.

ANTIGUA Why we love it: We challenge you not to fall in love with this gorgeous island. There’s something here to suit all holiday styles, whether you’re taking a trek through rainforest, diving with turtles, chilling out on the beach or exploring iconic sites such as Nelson’s Dockyard. What’s more, it’s an eight-hour direct flight from the UK – still long-haul, but you shouldn’t arrive feeling too exhausted. When to go: December-May Where to stay: Sandals Grande Antigua is located on Dickenson Bay, the island’s most renowned beach, and has excellent facilities. The all-inclusive package is one of the most generous around. Curtain Bluff is an elegant option with fabulous beach front rooms.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Why we love it: This collection of idyllic Caribbean islands used to be a honeymoon hotspot. That ended with Hurricane Irma in 2017: as well as the tragic loss of life, the tourism industry was decimated. Now, these glorious islands are coming back into their own, and they certainly deserve a visit. The vibe is barefoot luxury at its best, with stunning resorts set against natural beauty. When to go: February-May Where to stay: Guana Island is a must-visit – this private island resort is all soft sands, swaying palm trees and rustic-chic accommodation. It’s a nature-lovers’ paradise, with giant iguanas, flamingos and much more. For glamping with extra luxury, it has to be Anegada Beach Club, which has beachside tents with en-suite bathrooms, Wifi and private decks.

Since I was a young girl, I’ve always been drawn to to crystals, and I loved the magic and mystery of them. Now I love to work with crystals during healing sessions, and have noticed what a positive difference they have made, not only in my own life, but other people’s lives too. It still amazes me how crystals have the ability to shift the energy of whatever environment they are in, and the energy of peoples lives too. I’ve always dreamt of having my own crystal store. and on Saturday the 29th of August, my vision came true, as I officially opened ‘The Crystal Company London’. By Holding crystals, or placing them on the body, they emit an energy, or frequency, which can help with physical, emotional and spiritual healing. This happens because Crystals positively interact with your body’s energy field and chakras. Each crystal has different properties and benefits, and your chakras are also associated with different crystals. At ‘the crystal company’, I hand select each piece of crystal that enters the shop, as it is very important to me to see and feel the quality and energy of each piece. Some crystals can alleviate stress, some are good for uplifting your mood, some work at improving concentration or creativity, and some eliminate negativity. They can help with many different issues, and can be purchased for many different reasons, but one of my favourite things to do as a healer and crystal lover, is to create bespoke pouches for each persons individuals needs. I do this by intuitively connecting with the person, which then allows me to pick the crystals best suited for them. Some may need crystal energy for fertility, some may need them to attract love or abundance into their life, or some may need them for recurring headaches! Having crystals around your house or workspace, can also create a better environment. Some crystals bring a calming effect, some help concentration and focus, and some can simply lift the vibe and energy of a room. For me, crystals are a sacred gift from Mother Nature, and their healing properties never cease to amaze me. I feel very blessed and honoured to work with them.

Orange, Cardamom & Almond Cake When I bake this cake, the kitchen fills with the warming smell of cardamom. I serve it on it’s own or with Greek yogurt that I have mixed with a little icing sugar and rosewater to make it even more aromatic. Serves 12 Ingredients Grated zest and juice of 1 large orange 1 small orange finely sliced to decorate. 250g chopped dried pitted dates 200g butter softened 150g light muscovado sugar 4 large free range eggs 250g spelt flour 1 tsp bicarbonate soda Seeds from 10 cardamom pods, crushed. 100g ground almonds 50g pistachio nuts bashed (more to decorate) 2 tbsp icing sugar Method Preheat the oven to 140°C, gas mark 1. Line the base of a 21cm loose bottomed cake tin with baking paper. Set aside 2 tsp orange juice and a little of the zest then place the rest in a small saucepan with the dates and heat together for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Using an electric hand, whisk beat together the butter and light muscovado sugar in a bowl for 3 minutes until pale and creamy then beat in the eggs, one at a time add a tablespoon of flour, to stop it from curdling. Fold in the remaining flour, bicarbonate soda, cardamom seeds, ground almonds, pistachios and a pinch of salt. Stir in the cooled dates and juice and spoon the mixture into the prepared tin. Level the surface & decoratively lay the small orange slices around the cake mixture and bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes until a knife inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool in the tin for 30 minutes, then take out and cool on a wire rack. When the cake has cooled completely, mix the reserve orange juice and zest into the icing sugar. Drizzle over the cake and serve.

Chickpea Filled Filo Triangles This is one of the dishes that’s on my vegan menu for The Real Greek. It has proved to be very popular as it has the perfect balance of aroma and spice. If you fancy trying them but don’t want to cook them yourself, you could always pop in to The Real Greek and give them a go! Makes 12–16 Ingredients 1 pack filo pastry Olive oil, for brushing For the filling 2 x 400g tinned chickpeas, drained 1 onion, cut into quarters 1 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp ground turmeric 40g sundried tomatoes 1 small red chilli, very finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed Zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil 30g flat leaf parsley, finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper Black and white sesame seeds for sprinkling (optional) Method Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4 and line a baking tray with baking paper. Place all the filling ingredients except from the sesame seeds into a food processor and blitz into a coarse paste. Remove the filo pastry from the wrapper and unroll onto a clean work surface. Cut through the centre vertically so you have two even sections. Place one on top of the other. Use two sheets per triangle. Place 1 heaped tsp (do not overfill) of filling at the bottom of each strip and then start folding the pastry around the filling. Seal the triangle with a dab of olive oil. Lightly brush with olive oil (you don’t want the pastry to be oily) and sprinkle with a little salt. Place the pastries on the lined baking tray, under damp kitchen paper, and continue until you have used up all the filling or pastry sheets. Sprinkle them with dark and light sesame seeds (if using) Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden.

INTERVIEW

An interview with

PIERS MORGAN Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan discusses going back to the studio for Life Stories and the emotion behind each interview.

Are you pleased the new series has returned and you’re able to go back in the studio? I think everyone who works in television, has, for the last six months, been concerned about the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the ability to actually make TV shows. And whether that’s from GMB to Britain’s Got Talent, to something like Life Stories - everyone has been having the same conversations. Can you have an audience? How many people can you have in a studio? How does it work with production crews etc? For me, it’s just great to be able to get to back doing Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and to have an audience, albeit a much smaller one. Do you think Piers Morgan’s Life Stories can adapt easier than some of the shows to have a reduced or no audience? Ultimately it’s just me and the guest, one on one. The fact there are people in the studio and at home watching usually gets forgotten about very quickly by me, and the interviewee. So, the actual content of the interview is completely unaffected. But obviously, anyone who’s done these things in front of a live audience, the audience gives you an energy that you just don’t have without it. I think for Vinnie Jones and Captain Sir Tom Moore, who are two such extraordinary characters, you can imagine an audience reacting really well to both of them. You could do it without having an audience, but it helps to have some people there. Are you looking forward to speaking with Vinnie Jones again?

I think that the chances of ‘Arise Sir Piers’ coming out of her Majesty’s mouth are at the lower end of the probability spectrum.

Vinnie’s the first time we’ve ever had a return guest. And the reason we decided to do this with Vinnie is he has this remarkable book that he has brought out about his wife Tanya, who very sadly died quite recently. I knew Tanya for a long time and observed at first hand the extraordinary marriage that they had, through thick and thin for many years, and then ultimately their wonderful love story ending in complete tragedy. I felt when I read this book that Vinnie has done, it’s just so powerful. So eloquent, so moving, so inspiring. The last time I interviewed Vinnie on Life Stories, Tanya was sitting in the audience. But as he says, his life has now been two lives. One with Tanya, and one that he is trying to build now after Tanya. And I think that’s going to make for a very powerful show. You’ve known Vinnie Jones for 30 years, how did you meet? Gosh, I’ve known Vinnie since I was a Showbiz Reporter on The Sun doing the Bizarre column. I first met him when I was

54 // Close Up Magazine

a local reporter on the Wimbledon News and he was playing for Wimbledon as part of their infamous Crazy Gang. He is just this extraordinary life force and one of the most charismatic people you’ll ever meet. A bundle of energy, always working incredibly hard and always socialising just as hard! Over the years I’ve employed Vinnie as a columnist, then had to fire him – he talks about that in his previous autobiography at great length – and I’ve been in a nightclub when someone has come up behind me and nearly throttled me to death and I’ve suddenly realised it was Vinnie. So it’s fair to say we’ve had our ups and downs, but in the last few years I’ve got to know Vinnie really well by playing golf with him in LA where we both play at the same course regularly together and we’ve become great friends. I’ve interviewed him a few times on Good Morning Britain [GMB], and on other platforms, and he is honestly one of my favourite interviewees. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Very funny, very warm and an inspiring kind of character. His life story is amazing. He went from being a hod carrier, to winning the FA Cup and captaining Wales. Then becoming a movie star who has made over 60 or 70 movies with some of the biggest stars in the world. He is a remarkable character, but it will be a very different Vinnie who I interview ten years on from our first Life Stories encounter. He has now been tee-total for seven years, and his beloved wife has so sadly died, he has a very different life now. Most people do get emotional at some point throughout the interview, why you do think that is?

I think it would be very surprising if someone talked about their entire life and at no point felt emotional about it. That would be very odd. I think everyone has had difficult moments in their lives which they find emotional to discuss. Sir Michael Parkinson was a great example of that. I never thought he would get tearful. I don’t think he ever thought he would either. But we talked about his dad who had died 50 years earlier, and to my complete surprise he got very, very emotional discussing it. In fact he was so surprised by his reaction, he has now written a book about his dad. So you never know, you can never predict it. Sometimes you think a certain interview is going to be emotional. I’m sure Vinnie’s will be, I know when I did Cheryl Cole, at the time that we did it just after her marriage break-up from Ashley Cole, that it was going to be emotional. However, there are other people that surprise me like Parky did. Some people don’t get emotional at all, they are just not that type of person. But most do at some stage in the interview and I think that that is perfectly normal and natural.

INTERVIEW You were a champion of Captain Sir Tom Moore from the very start, are you proud to have been a small part in his story?

You campaigned Captain Tom’s Knighthood, do you think we’ll have Sir Piers soon?

I’m very proud, yes. He’s such a remarkable man who nobody had ever heard of six months ago, and now he is one of the most famous people in the world. He has been knighted, he has been promoted to Colonel, he’s received a Pride of Britain Award, he’s had the world’s great and good ring him up and write to him. And he has done it by walking 100 laps of his garden up to his 100th birthday, and in the process raising over £30million pounds. It’s one of the most extraordinary stories I’ve ever encountered in my journalistic career. I feel very proud I’ve got to know Captain Tom and to have become quite friendly with him. He rings me up and we have chats and it’s great. He is just a really funny, warm, smart Yorkshire man and he can’t believe what’s happened to him. He wants to ride the wave of it and do as much as he can to raise money and awareness for causes and it’s fantastic. He said he can’t believe his luck at this stage in his life. He is a great guy. He has a book coming out and he approached us about doing Life Stories and I’m just touched that he would want to do that.

I think that the chances of ‘Arise Sir Piers’ coming out of her Majesty’s mouth are at the lower end of the probability spectrum. In the same way I wish I had rushed out and put a bet on Captain Tom being Knighted, I would probably put a bet on me not being. It would be a safer bet.

Some of your family have a military background, do you think that’s why you had an immediate connection to his cause/campaign? The military background to Captain Tom is well known now. He was in Burma in World War II and my grandfather was a Commando in Burma around the same time. I don’t know if they even met each other, but they were both there serving their country. I know when I was campaigning to get Captain Tom a knighthood - which turned out to be very successful very quickly! - when I did that, I asked him what he would say to the Queen if he met her? He said he’d say: ‘this is a marvellous moment, you are a magnificent lady and we both served in your fathers army’. It means a lot to him I think his military background. I have a brother who is a serving Colonel, my brother-in-law was a Colonel, one of my uncles was a Major, my grandfather was a Commando and my great uncle John won the George Medal for his valour in World War 2. So, there’s a lot of military in my family. That’s definitely a notable link we have.

56 // Close Up Magazine

Do you think it’s more difficult to interview someone you know well, rather than a celebrity you’ve never met? Actually, I prefer interviewing people I know well because I think you immediately have a rapport, that can be a really powerful connection between the interviewee and the interviewer for this type of programme. With Life Stories, you’re not really grilling people like a Politician where you think they’re possibly lying to you and you’re trying to get to the truth. You’re really just getting them to open up about their lives. That’s a different technique and a different atmosphere. The more comfortable they are from the start, the better actually. And I’ve got no problem in looking someone in the eye that I’ve known for 20 years and asking them a difficult question, as they know! Who would you love to get into the Life Stories chair to interview for another series? We have a few more lined up for early next year, which I can’t reveal at the moment, but which I’m really pleased about. I did have a great moment in a restaurant the other week when one of my number one targets, Sir Michael Caine, was sitting on the next table and I did not let the opportunity pass by without making one last push. He actually said he is going to watch the Captain Tom interview and he is going to see if he likes it and if he does, he is going to do Life Stories. So… there’s a lot of pressure on Captain Tom’s shoulders now!

If someone was to interview you for Piers Morgan’s Life Stories with Piers Morgan, who would you want it to be? Well, I actually interviewed myself once for GQ magazine over eight pages. And I’ve got to say, it was a great interview! So maybe I’d have to interview myself in a virtual scenario where there is two of me. I think the public would quite like that. I actually gave myself a hard time in the GQ one. I’d get the secrets out of me! If you did a ‘Piers Meets Piers’ Life Stories, what story do you think people would be surprised to learn about you? I was once offered a record contract by a record executive in a Barbados club at 3am in the morning, after stripping off to the waist, putting on a bandana and singing Live and Let Die - the Axel Rose version. That was one of the more surprising moments of my career. He was deadly serious. But it turns out, I could only sing it as well as I did that night, after about a bottle of Jack Daniels. Which I don’t think would be conducive to a long career in the music business. Which has been your favourite Life Stories interview so far?

He is a remarkable character, but it will be a very different Vinnie who I interview ten years on from our first Life Stories encounter.

I’ve had so many that I loved from Ronnie Corbett, Bruce Forsyth and Elton John to Joan Collins, Burt Reynolds and Rod Stewart. The Parky [Michael Parkinson] one was one of my all-time favourites because a) he is a master interviewer, b) I had tried to get him for 15 series and finally landed him. And c) I think it was a great interview and we had a remarkable moment. It has real repercussions for him where he has now gone back to his relationship with his father, who he loved hugely and lost him when he was quite young. And I think it’s opened up a whole new world for Parky in terms of his family and wanting to go back to that time. I’m really pleased about that. That’s what you want to do with Life Stories. You want to take people back to great moments in their lives, sad moments in their lives, important moments and get them to relive it. Maybe for good and sometimes sad reasons but to really think about what’s been important in their lives. For Parky, that relationship with his dad has obviously been a pivotal thing in his life and even talking about it five decades later made him very emotional. That was a very powerful thing. Which has been your most nerve-wracking interview on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories? Sharon Osbourne. Whenever you interview her there’s always quite a high risk of being physically assaulted at some stage. I think I pushed a few buttons with her. She’s like one of those Pomeranian dogs she’s got, one false move and they start fighting. But she’s also one of my favourite people in the world. Love her. Have any of your interviews had a lasting impression on you? I think a lot of them have had lasting impressions on me, yes. I think when I interviewed Simon Cowell - who I owe a lot to for my career in many ways, especially in America because he took me to America’s Got Talent - I interviewed him, again he

technique over 15 series?

got emotional about his father who died on the happiest day of his life – the day he had his first number one hit. He rang to tell his parents he had his first number one and his father had died the same day. There, right there, is what life can be like. You have this tremendous moment of happiness and it can be met by a crushing moment of tragedy, within an hour. I think that really defined Simon and made him realise that life’s short and you’ve got to get on with it. I was reminded of that with his crash recently. You just never know. He was just trying out this new motorised bike and you just never know when something can happen. Thank god he is alright. How do you think you’ve change or improved your interview

I think what you learn on Life Stories is there’s a real power in silence. It’s a totally opposite discipline to GMB where you might only have a few minutes with someone and you feel you’ve got to get to the truth, especially Government ministers. It’s a different technique and I’m obviously much more aggressive sometimes in that environment. But with Life Stories, that doesn’t work. Really you want to use silence. People tend to fill silence so if you just stay quiet at crucial moments, people tend to speak and say what you want them to say. I think the power of silence is key. Long term fans of mine might be slightly bemused to hear that silence is golden for me! But it’s something in Life Stories I’ve learned can be a powerful weapon, just let the guests talk or fill the silence. Who of the Arsenal team, past and present, would you love to interview for the show? Ian Wright would be number one. I’ve been trying to get him for years. We’re great mates but he has always resisted. But I think when the time’s right, he’ll hopefully want to talk about it. But it would be Ian Wright, definitely. An absolute legend, on and off the pitch.

FILM REVIEW

What’s on

NETFLIX The seemingly endless scroll of Netflix’s treasure trove of terrific shows and movies can be more than a little paralyzing when trying to choose something to watch. If you’ve just finished a good series and need a new one to fill the void, Close Up is assembling a monthly list of the best TV shows currently available on the streaming service, from classics of yesteryear to the hottest new titles. Below, we’ve rounded up the best shows on Netflix right now, so you can binge-watch without having to hunt for the right title.

OR PHA N BLAC K Looking for hidden gem on Netflix? Look no further than Orphan Black. The sci-fi drama grew in prominence after an Emmy win for leading actress Tatiana Maslany in 2016 but never quite cracked the mainstream fanbase like Black Mirror and Doctor Who did. After witnessing the suicide of a woman who looks just like her, outsider and orphan Sarah Manning (Maslany) assumes her identity. But she soon uncovers a conspiracy that will haunt her past and define her future. It’s difficult to explain Maslany’s powerful performance(s) without spoiling the plot altogether, but it’s one of the most unique and impressive turns in science fiction TV. Though sometimes a little out there with plot devices and characters, especially in the later seasons, Orphan Black is a great watch for any sci-fi fan craving excellent female-led drama and comedy.

C HE F S TA BL E Don’t watch this when you’re hungry. Each episode of this mouth-watering series goes into the kitchen of one of the world’s top chef’s and looks beyond their creations. With restaurants still open in limited ways because of the pandemic, Chef’s Table is the perfect way to get inspired and passionate about food. What’s more, there are six seasons to get your teeth stuck into. The most recent of these involves Sean Brock, who is dedicated to reviving lost flavours and Tuscan butcher Dario Cecchini who is trying to change how the world things about meat. If you really want to get your mouth watering, the entire of season four is dedicated to pastry.

T HE A SSA SSINATI ON O F G I A N N I V E R S AC E From the same team behind The People v O.J. Simpson comes the true – if slightly embellished – story of the life of Andrew Cunanan, who, in 1997, shot dead the world-famous fashion designer Gianni Versace outside his home in Miami Beach, Florida. This darkly stylish series, which debuted on the BBC in the UK but has now been picked up by Netflix. The narrative jumps around to build up Cunanan’s character, revealing an eccentric, enigmatic and ultimately darkly twisted individual who is superbly played by Darren Criss – best-known as Blaine Anderson in Glee. From start to finish, this show is compelling, binge-worthy viewing.

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE

NE XT I N FASHI ON

It’s based on a film of the same name, but Dear White People is a Netflix-original American comedy that’s worth your time. The series follows a group of students of colour who attend a mostly-white Ivy League college. It shows their struggles against racism and discrimination and covers the same ground as the film. However, each episodes tells the story of one different character and lets you dive deeper into their lives and individual personalities. There’s also some laughs along the way.

Next in Fashion is a perfect binge for Project Runway fans, offering Netflix’s take on the tried-and-tested fashion competition format. Eighteen designers draw, cut and sew for the chance to win a cash prize and the opportunity to sell their line on Net-a-Porter, designing looks from red carpet dresses to sportswear under unrealistic time conditions (but minus the surprise ‘twists’ that made Project Runway so mean). Hosts Alexa Chung and Tan France keep the mood light, but the real draw is the sheer talent of the designers, most of whom are already very accomplished and manage to magic up some truly impressive catwalk showstoppers.

SE X E DU CAT ION

COBRA KAI

The second season of this raunchy teen show is the biggest highlight on Netflix in 2020 so far. Although it has a distinctly American glow, with jocks, Acapella groups and mean girls, Sex Education is set in the UK and filmed in Wales. Asa Butterfield stars as an awkward teenager who starts giving sex counselling for money, and Gillian Anderson plays his mother in her typical graceful style. While the titular topic is used as a source of comedy, Sex Education also explores issues related to intimacy and identity issues in a smart way that will dredge up your emotions.

Once a YouTube original, Netflix recently snapped up the rights to Karate Kid continuation TV show Cobra Kai. Set 34 years after Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) was defeated by Danny LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), the former opens the Cobra Kai dojo once more to teach a new generation of kids how to fight. This sparks Johnny and Danny’s old rivalry. If you love Karate Kid, this show is a lot of fun, and both its leads are in surprisingly great condition considering they’re each performing fight stunts in their fifties. Cobra Kai season 3 is on the way to Netflix in 2021, but for now you can get caught up with seasons 1 and 2 – it’s one of the best new recent Netflix shows.

HEALTH

Top things you need to know

ABOUT BREAST HEALTH Miss Tasha Gandamihardja, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast and Reconstructive surgeon at The Holly Private Hospital talks about the Top Things You Need to Know about Breast Health. You can read the full article here.

The best way for a woman to know her breasts is to check them regularly. If you are familiar with how they look and feel, any lumps or changes will be more noticeable. What are the signs to look when checking your breasts: • • • • • • • •

Lumps or thickening that feels different Changes in the shape of the breast Skin changes, such as redness or a rash Dimpling or puckering of the skin The nipple pulling inwards (inversion) Liquid or a bloody nipple discharge Swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone Constant pain in the breast or armpit.

What should I expect if I am referred to a breast clinic? If a woman notices any of the symptoms listed above, she should see her GP, who will refer her to a breast clinic. Ideally, the clinic should be a ‘one stop shop’, where examination and imaging are undertaken during the same visit. The surgeon will take a detailed history of the symptoms and perform a thorough breast examination. Imaging will then take place – either an ultrasound scan or a mammogram, or both. The results will be discussed with the patient immediately afterwards, so by the time she leaves the clinic, she has had a full check-up. This not only saves time, but minimises the anxiety that comes with having to wait for results. In a small proportion of women, an abnormality may be found, in which case a biopsy may be taken. For these women, the results will be given at a separate follow-up appointment. What are the treatment options for breast cancer?

Lumpectomy If the cancer is relatively small compared to breast size, a lumpectomy – where just the lump is removed – followed by radiotherapy is normally advised. Scar placement, achieving symmetry and efforts to minimise breast defects are also taken into consideration. Mastectomy and reconstruction If a mastectomy (removal of the breast) has been recommended, the surgeon will offer breast reconstruction. This can be undertaken at the same time as the cancer operation or at a later date. Depending on the patient’s breast reconstruction preference, an implant may be placed under the chest wall muscle or tissue from another part of the body, such as the back, abdomen or inner thigh, might be used. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and endocrine treatment The need for these treatments depends on the type of cancer and the extent of the disease. After detailed discussion between surgeons, pathologists, radiologists and oncologists, a suitable treatment plan will be recommended. Don’t wait… Most breast symptoms are not worrisome, yet it is always best to be safe. If you have any concerns about your breasts, please see your GP as soon as possible so they can refer you to a breast clinic if necessary.

Breast cancer treatment and surgical techniques have advanced significantly in recent years. While treatment remains the utmost priority, emphasis is also placed on the aesthetic outcome. Oncoplastic breast surgery is a relatively new term that refers to when plastic surgery techniques are used, alongside breast cancer surgery, to ensure best aesthetic surgical outcome is achieved.

Miss Tasha Gandamihardja is a consultant oncoplastic breast and reconstructive surgeon. She incorporates plastic surgical techniques during breast cancer surgery. Miss Gandamihardja has clinics at The Holly Private Hospital on Mondays and Fridays. To book an appointment call 020 3925 1323. 66 // Close Up Magazine
