WILD AT HEART NEXT and Myleene Klass Kids have now launched their brand new collaboration – a capsule clothing collection for newborns and children, designed and created exclusively with NEXT. The collection also boasts a selection of homeware including soft furnishings and nursery accessories.

I have shopped online with Next for as long as I can remember. Their emphasis is on online shopping which is essential nowadays and more so than ever, it’s a life line for parents, especially new ones that can’t often leave the house. Partnering with Next has also given me the opportunity to explore new fabrics and techniques in design that I haven’t been able to before. Exciting times!” – Myleene Klass Boasting over 140 lines for Spring/Summer 2021, the collection includes a variety of clothing and accessories catering for newborns to age 6 and prices range from £4 to £28. “I wanted the clothes to do lots of different jobs, I want them to feel good, look good, be practical, be unisex… look fresh but still classic and include all the elements that my customers know and want from my designs – and that my own babies have enjoyed growing up with.” – Myleene Klass Myleene has also designed a capsule collection of nursery accessories, starting from £14 that includes baby sleeping bags, rugs, throws and soft furnishings. The range combines statement animal prints with a Scandi aesthetic – appealing to style conscious mums.

I love the Scandinavian influences at the moment. The lighter, brighter, sleeker lines mixed with my signature leopard print. Fun, bold yet classic. – Myleene Klass

In fact, I can proudly look back and see that when I started designing kids clothes 14 years ago, my range was pretty brave and set the pace. Many of the designs were actually considered daring at the time. Black, monochrome and leopard for babies were all the staples of the collection back then and still continue to be now and it’s wonderful to see people embrace them more than ever.” – Myleene Klass

COVER INTERVIEW

GLAM GIRL

Victoria Secret supermodel-turnedmum Gigi Hadid discusses life after becoming a new mum.

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik welcomed their daughter, Khai, last September, and as of now, they plan to give her a quiet farm life in Pennsylvania. Motherhood has changed Gigi in more ways than one. After giving birth to baby daughter Khai, the 25-year-old supermodel says she’s re-examining her relationship with her body. “I know that I’m not as small as I was before, but I also am a very realistic thinker,” Hadid — who posed for Vogue’s March 2021 cover 10 weeks postpartum — told the magazine. “I straight up was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll shoot a Vogue cover, but I’m obviously not going to be a size 0,’ nor do I, at this point, feel like I need to be back to that.” Added the new mum, “I also think it’s a blessing of this time in fashion that anyone who says that I have to be that can suck it.” In a Vogue video demonstrating her skincare routine and makeup hacks that accompanied her cover, Hadid also said she experienced a change in pigmentation on her face, especially around her eyes, during pregnancy — and decided to “just let it happen.” “It’s natural; I knew it was going to go away after I gave birth. I think just to not be hard on yourself and it’s part of the process,” she said. The blond beauty also admitted that she has been struggling to pamper herself in the months since baby Khai was born. “I know that sometimes I’m not washing my face these days, I don’t brush my hair for a few days,” Hadid said. “I just want to remind those of you watching that this is not how I look every day. Sometimes I go a week without touching makeup and just putting on deodorant is like, we’re doing great.”

I know that I’m not as small as I was before, but I also am a very realistic thinker – Yeah, I’ll shoot a Vogue cover, but I’m obviously not going to be a size 0. 10 // Close Up Magazine

COVER INTERVIEW

The new mum said she doesn’t feel pressure to load up her schedule with modelling gigs either. “I’m veering toward things that feel more stable than being in a different country every week,” she explained. Instead, she’s swapping her jet-setting ways for a laid-back life on the Hadid family farm in Pennsylvania. “I think she’ll definitely be raised here,” the star said of Khai. “The greenery and the farm-y lifestyle are similar to what made me feel really centred as a kid, and I think that’s really important to Zayn and me.” “I think that just giving your child the opportunity to explore different interests is such a beautiful thing,” she continued, opening up about how they plan to teach their daughter about different religions. “My dad’s Muslim, and my mom grew up celebrating Christmas. I felt like I was allowed to learn about every religion when I was a kid. I think it’s good to take different pieces of different religions that you connect with, and I think that’s how we’ll do that.”

“I think that [Malik and I] both want our daughter to understand fully all of her background—and also we want to prepare her. If someone does say something to her at school, we want to give her the tools to understand why other kids would do that and where that comes from.” During the interview, Hadid also detailed Khai’s delivery for the first time. She opted against a hospital check-in during the pandemic, and instead planned for a natural home birth, setting up an inflatable bath in their bedroom. She proudly called herself an “animal woman” for braving through the pain, and said she wanted a “peaceful bringing to the world” for her first child. “When you see someone do that, you look at them a bit differently. I probably looked crazy, actually,” Hadid explained, sharing that Malik, mum Yolanda, sister Bella, a midwife and her assistant were by her side.

12 // Close Up Magazine

She also revealed that her former One Direction boyfriend caught their baby during delivery: “It didn’t even click that she was out. I was so exhausted, and I looked up and he’s holding her. It was so cute.” Hadid adds that Malik felt “helpless” seeing her in pain. “Z was like, ‘That’s how I felt! You feel so helpless to see the person you love in pain,’ “ she says. “Afterward, Z and I looked at each other and we’re like, ‘We can have some time before we do that again!’” Hadid said throughout her pregnancy, she relied on natural products like Oliveda’s olive leaf cleansers and oils to keep her skin glowing. But now that we’re in winter, she’s back to the products she’s been using “since high school.” And though her makeup and skincare routines combined for a price tag just above $500, it does include many supermarket staples, like Cetaphil. To achieve her signature illuminating skin, Hadid applies thin products for coverage, mixing Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow Face Primer and Maybelline’s Poreless Liquid Foundation together and applying the products with her hands. And, not super shockingly, as the face of Maybelline, she relies on Maybelline’s best-selling concealer to cover up dark under-eye spots. Though she showed the magazine a fairly intricate routine, Hadid ended her tutorial with a relatable twist, telling the camera that she most certainly is not doing this step-by-step process every morning. “I’m not a pro, I’m only coming on my fourth month of new mom-hood, but I would just say that we should all try to focus on taking time for ourselves,” says Hadid. “So just remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can, you’re doing amazing, and to just give yourself grace. And if you brushed your hair this week, I’m really proud of you.”

ALL IN THE GENES Fashion and beauty content creator Naomi Genes talks all things fashion!

GO-TO LOOKS THIS SEASON I personally don’t like to focus too much on trends but here are my fail-safe looks for this season: Grabbing a coffee: A simple monochrome puffa coat paired with vintage style jeans and some simple white trainers. Running errands: Black ribbed gym wear with a classic oversized coat and trainers paired with a mini rucksack and a statement cap. Lunch date: A statement chunky knit with leather leggings and some black biker boots paired with a mini cross body bag.

For more style inspiration follow Naomi Genes on Instagram @naomigenes

FAVOURITE CELEB STYLE It has to be Hailey Bieber! She is just so effortless… I love how she really mixes up her styling between girly, sport chic and glam. She is just absolute GOALS!

HOW TO NAIL ‘OFF-DUTY’ STYLE When I build an outfit I always try to make the first layer simple, so that could be leggings and a T-shirt, jeans and a bodysuit or some leather leggings and a simple turtle neck. The next layer I like to make things more statement. So this is usually a big puffa coat, an oversized coat or a cropped oversized leather jacket. I think it looks cool mixing a fitted silhouette with oversized items. My most important step is accessorising! You will never see me out of the house without my gold hoops and rings on. My favourite place to shop gold hoops and rings is currently Mejuri – they are amazing quality and are timeless pieces. I also love to wear hats. A hat can really bring an outfit together, I usually pop on a Yankee cap or a plain beanie to finish my look, it really helps to give my outfit that ‘just thrown on’ effortless vibe.

HEALTH

MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE Advice for businesses from experts PsycHR

O

ver the last year, the pandemic and restrictions have meant that there has been a massive change to work life. Whether that has meant changes to routine, having to set up a home office environment, using technology more, dealing with childcare whilst working, or unfortunately losing jobs entirely; undoubtedly for many people there has been an impact to their mental health. As an employer, whether you’ve noticed behavioural changes in your employees, such as low motivation, poor communication, or less productivity, effective management of mental health in your workplace can help you to attract, develop, motivate and retain your valuable workforce. 4 Top Strategies to improve mental health in the workplace: 1. Mental Health Awareness Informing your organisation on types of mental health, recognising the symptoms, how they can manifest in the workplace, onset and development – can be key to early intervention and prevention. Which can be a real commercial move, saving costs on absenteeism, presenteeism and attrition. Have you considered offering a low cost training course for all to attend? This can be virtual or onsite, and research tells us that it can provide a return on investment of £6.30 for every £1 spent.

2. Practical Skills for Managers Giving your managers the foundation and skills in absence management, communication, team and resource management – can be pivotal in mitigating legal, commercial and reputational risks. Did you know that 86% of discrimination claims could have been prevented at manager level? that the average discrimination award was £40,000? or that discrimination claims are uncapped in the UK?

3. Openness and Destigmatisation One of the biggest issues facing organisations is the stigma or perceived stigma around mental health in the workplace. This diminishes the willingness for employees to speak up and reduces your ability to make improvements. To challenge this, think about companywide communications which normalise conversations around mental health or share a commitment to making the workplace a safe and supportive place for all.

4. Champions Another low cost strategy is to introduce mental health champions, these roles are in addition to an employees’ primary job and voluntary. Champions attend specialised training, and then are responsible for developing initiatives throughout the year to promote mental health. These may be wellbeing days, support networks or fundraising. Champions have a vested interest in mental health and can maintain the momentum for diversity and inclusion for all to thrive. These strategies focus on business continuity and performance. Whether the pandemic is nearly over or not, experts have said that there will be long term and lasting effects on mental health, and so being ahead of the curve with competitors should mean that your company is able to rise above the challenges long after the pandemic ends. EDUCATION

LOCKDOWN LEARNING By Anna Pericleous Teacher and Leader of Early Years and Primary Education

I

t has been a year since we discovered bubbles were not just blown out of soap and water, clapping was not just for shows but for heroes and tiers were not just found on cakes.

It has been a year since we began this ‘new normal’ life and had a complete over haul in the way we conduct ourselves in society and in our work. It has been a year since school’s first closed down (except for key workers children) to try to stop the spread of Corona virus and keep children and adults safe. It has been a tough year (to say the least) for all, however what is predominant and notable is the resilience and adaptability our society has shown over this period. I have previously commended parents, carers, teachers and children and I will continue to do so especially through this lockdown which I am sure has tested the mental wellbeing of all. This lockdown was not expected by all but prepared for indeed. We had already had a taste of what lockdown would entail in March 2020 but were still finding our feet. Schools provision for learning adapted to teaching online and parents/ carers/ siblings became teachers over night. This time round, schools were able to invest more time in training for remote online learning and families were becoming used to supporting their children from home. Sutton Trust states that ‘Over half (54%) of teachers are now using online live lessons, compared to just 4% in March 2020’. When looking at those statistics we can truly see an increase in the ways in which we have progressed. (Although I would probably argue it is a lot more than 54%). There are countless platforms schools are using to teach through and if I do say so myself as being exciting new technological advancements! I have personally enjoyed using zoom, loom and Google classroom. (I will be recommending some educational teaching sites below) During this lockdown, learning has been more rigorous and systematic and hopefully children and families have found routine in their days. Ironically, we celebrated ‘Children’s mental health week’ and the theme was to ‘express yourself’ This was a fantastic way to encourage children to communicate more freely and choose ways in which to express their feelings. If you didn’t get round to celebrating the week you can always create your own celebratory week where you share how far you have come and enjoy noting all the new memories you have made during lockdown focussing on the positive. I have personally learnt how important family is and how being there for one another can pull you back from any hardships. I am also planning on making a memory board to document this lockdown (I am going to include photographs, drawings, recipes, quotes, books, planning for teaching and even receipts from the local shops).– why not give this a go yourselves! If you have experienced times where your children feel less motivated to complete their work and you are questioning

yourselves please know that this is common. My best advice is to try to switch up your days a bit and if that means focussing on more creative learning or even leaving the learning environment for a walk do it. At school when the children seem unfocused I do something out of the ordinary with them and these are called ‘brain breaks’. We play a quick game of Simon says, Follow the leader, Just dance or Quiz time. You can do this at home along with other activities such as ‘find it’ where you call out a colour, use of an object and material and see if they can get it. (See website ideas below) I would love to hear or see what you have all been up to during lockdown. You can email sayhello@closeupuk.com and quote ‘Lockdown Learning’ or share on your instagram and tag @the_magic_of_eyfs. (An educational idea instagram for younger children) I would like to end by saying ‘Lockdown learning’ does not just refer to education but engulfs a multitude of skills and developments we have made as human beings. Keep well and safe and don’t forget to recognise how far we have come. EDUCATION

WINCHMORE HILL

CHOOSING

a primary school Which type of school offers the best start for my child? Parents looking for a Reception place for their child ask themselves a number of important questions: 1. What type of school will suit my child best – small, nurturing, academic, sporty, musical, single-sex? What is the ethos of the school? 2. How will I get them to school – by car, walking or public transport? Is there good wraparound care provision? 3. Does the school offer a nurturing environment and good pastoral care so that my child can settle in quickly and make new friendships? 4. Does the school have excellent teachers who aim to instil confidence and nurture talents and treat my child as an individual? 5. Does the school offer a good range of extra-curricular activities, school trips, and sporting fixtures?

Wendy Kempster is Head of Palmers Green High School in North London.

They begin reading, writing and numeracy early on and make it fun! One of the school’s greatest strengths is the specialist teaching my daughter receives from Reception class. It assures me that my daughter is being pushed to recognise her full potential and is surrounded by likeminded individuals who are all seeking the same educational goals. I liked the small setting, just for girls, the small class size and felt that the academic standard was strong and would help our daughters achieve their full potential.

I know my daughter will achieve the most that she can at PGHS – I don’t believe any other school would be better for her.

• PGHS offers small class sizes and each girl is treated as an individual where all talents are nurtured. Girls are selected for entry based on their potential to learn and join like-minded individuals who are encouraged to achieve their full potential. • Girls are taught by specialist teachers with Reception having specialist PE, Music and Drama lessons each week. From Year 1, additional specialist teaching includes Art, Design & Technology, ICT and Languages.

As Headmistress of Palmers Green High School, I am very much aware of how important this decision is, and am confident that in choosing PGHS, you are giving your daughter the very best start you can.

• PGHS is the only all-girls independent school for ages 3-16 in the area. As a through-school, pupils don’t suffer from the anxiety of transition at the end of Year 6, but move with confidence to the Senior School.

In 1905 our founder, Alice Hum, chose the motto, By Love Serve One Another to reflect the very special ethos of our small and nurturing School. Located in the heart of Winchmore Hill, parents choose our School for a number of reasons:

• A wide variety of extra-curricular clubs are offered to girls in the Lower School, including Sewing Club, Marble Club, Cookery Club, Prep Choir, Speech and Drama, Gymnastics and Prep Violin Club.

• At inspection, every aspect of Palmers Green High School has received the highest grades of outstanding/excellent – from the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) all the way to Year 11.

• There are a wide range of trips and visits on offer, which have included the Tower of London, Gunpowder Mills and Shepreth Wildlife Park and visits from authors, poets and illustrators as well as a Shakespeare Workshop.

• The School has a reputation for excellence and is ranked Number One in The Sunday Times Parent Power national league table for small independent schools.

• Exclusive wraparound care is provided by M&M childcare who collect the children from both the Nursery and School and take them to nearby facilities. Our working parents can be reassured that their daughters are well cared for.

We loved the fact that it’s a cosy school with lovely staff who put the girls and their education at the centre of everything.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the PGHS family, please call Admissions on 020 8886 1135, email office@pghs.co.uk or visit us virtually at www.pghs.co.uk

**We are still receiving applications for Reception entry for this September.** Close Up Magazine // 31

Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! www.keepingupwithkaterina.com @keepingupwithkaterina

Hey all! How are you all doing? Feel like it’s been a while since I had a chance to write. One minute I’m submitting my write up for December’s column, getting excited for Christmas and our 4 day mixing bubble bonanza, then POOF... it’s 3 months later, 3 months of (yet another) lockdown and festive fun was a dream that never came true (funny how it goes isn’t it). Since December, my emotions have been all over the place, I’ve felt worried, anxious, bored, unmotivated and frustrated for the most of it, and dare I say it, fed up of this whole thing and very tempted to rule break. Not sure if it’s the weather, the fact that we’re doing this again or the fact that we’re approaching a whole year of this bastard pandemic which we all (very optimistically it seemed) never thought would actually last longer than a couple months. But nevertheless! Here we are, here I am, here you are! Me writing, you reading. How great is that? We’ve lasted a whole year of a pandemic – who would have thought?! In our lifetime, we’ve experienced something we’ve only seen in films (literally). Whoever you are, wherever you are – this lockdown undoubtedly has effected us all in some way shape or form, whether it be physically, emotionally or mentally (and I’m sure in many cases – a mix of all three). During this time I’m sure a lot of us have felt the sadness of losing people, the sadness

of missing people, battled with emotions of our own that sometimes felt like too much, had a complete change of routine and lost all sense of normality and even the feeling of guilt for all the times normal life just became too much (pat on the back for all the parents turned teachers). I’m sure there’s times that some of us may have just felt like giving up – but guess what – YOU didn’t. You’re stronger than this pandemic, you’re here, you made it. Hoping I don’t eat my words – but I do actually believe there is a light at the end of this never-ending tunnel in near sight and I hope by next March (God willing) I’ll still be here, writing in this wonderful magazine and all things pandemic would be a distant memory. I can’t wait for my Instagram feed to be full of the happiness captured of all the missed birthdays, the postponed weddings, holidays of a lifetime and full of the love and comfort that we all are so badly in need of. I hope wherever you are and whoever you are, that you are safe, well and damn well proud of yourself for getting here. Until next time lovelies

This month’s Business in Spotlight is the wonderful dog walking company, Poochez. All dog owners will certainly agree that their furry friends are like additional children in their families, and ensuring their care and safety when out is paramount. Having the pleasure of knowning the owner, Harg, personally – I can vouch for the pride she takes in her work – ensuring that each pooch is well looked after and loved in her care. She has kindly offered my readers 20% off their first walk when quoting my column! Essex Grazing Tables

E

ssex Grazing Tables was established in March 2020 when we entered the national lockdown and my work was no longer. I have always had a passion for food and presentation and knew I was hiding a hidden talent. VE Day was my first big day getting out over 70 food orders! Since then it has been a whirlwind of success. Not only am I offering grazers, we have been doing themed parties for our customers at their request. Some of our themes are Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins, Harry Potter and more. Essex Grazing Tables has been a real turning point in our lives, not just for me but for my children. I am now able to give them what I couldn’t before and that is all through hard work and determination.

In 2018 me and my girls were made homeless from our privately rented house and left with no option but to go to the council as homeless. After 2 weeks they then housed us in a temporary hostel where me, my 2 daughters and grandson shared a room. After lots of meetings and 12 weeks later we finally got a home to call our own! It’s taken me 2 years to get every room decorated slowly but I have now just been able to get a kitchen fitted thanks to my small business! I am forever grateful for all of my customers that have helped me reach this point in my life and will continue to offer the best service to you all! /essexgrazingtables

SPRING DINING Spring is here and whether it is casual grazing you fancy or a hearty meal, spices should always be featured. Spices are full of micronutrients and of course add wonderful flavour and depth to your dishes. One tip if you are using dried spices, if they have lost their scent, they will have also lost their flavour an their nutrient qualities.

AROMATIC LAMB CURRY When I’m making this curry at home, the whole house smells delicious. Using lamb shanks makes it look so pretty and gives it dinner party status. Serves 4 Ingredients 3 tsp dried chilli flakes 2.5cm piece of ginger, grated 2 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp black peppercorns seeds from 5 cardamom pods a pinch of salt 1 red onion, chopped 6 garlic cloves, crushed 1 lemongrass stalk, white part only, roughly chopped 2 tbsp coriander stems and leaves, chopped, plus a large handful of leaves, to serve 3 tbsp olive oil 4 lamb shanks (about 1.4kg) 400ml tin coconut milk 400ml water 1 tbsp caster sugar 1 tbsp fish sauce 400g new potatoes, halved 2 preserved lemons, sliced 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp roasted peanuts, chopped sourdough, to serve

44 // Close Up Magazine

Method Preheat the oven to 160°C/320°F/Gas Mark 3. Combine the chilli flakes, ginger, cumin seeds, black peppercorns, cardamom and salt with the onion, garlic, lemongrass, coriander and 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a blender and blend as finely as possible. Brown the lamb shanks in the remaining oil in a large flameproof casserole dish over a medium-high heat. Remove them from the pan and set aside, add the curry paste mixture and stir for 2 minutes. Return the lamb to the dish, add the coconut milk, water, sugar and fish sauce and bring to the boil, then remove from the heat. Add the potatoes and put in the oven for 1¾–2 hours, turning the lamb a few times while cooking, until the meat is tender and falling off the bone and the sauce has reduced by a third. Skim any fat off the surface and discard. Stir in the preserved lemons and lime juice, and scatter with peanuts. Serve with coriander leaves and crusty sourdough bread.

FIG AND ALMOND CAKE

WITH ORANGE BLOSSOM YOGURT When they are in season I use fresh figs, but if they’re not I use the soft organic ones instead. Serves 10 Ingredients 200g unsalted butter at room temperature 75g brown sugar 3 medium eggs 180g ground almonds 100g wholemeal flour ½ tsp salt 1 vanilla pod, split in half and seeds scraped out 1 tsp ground cinnamon 100g Greek yogurt 4 tsp ground cloves a pinch of saffron threads (optional) 12 figs For the orange blossom yogurt 100g Greek yogurt 25g icing sugar or 1 tbsp honey 4-5 tbsp orange blossom water Method Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. Line the base and sides of a 24cm loosebottomed cake tin with baking paper. Beat the butter and sugar together with a handheld electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Beat each egg separately, then, with the machine on medium speed, add them one at a time to the bowl, adding another only once the previous egg is fully combined. Mix the almonds, flour, salt, vanilla seeds, saffron threads and cinnamon together in a bowl, then fold into the cake mixture. Mix until smooth, then fold in the yogurt.

Pour the cake mixture into the prepared tin and level roughly with a palette knife or a spoon. Cut each fig vertically into four wedges and arrange in circles on top of the cake, just slightly immersed in the cake mixture. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 170°C/325°F/Gas Mark 3 and continue baking for 60 minutes, or until it’s firm to the touch. Cover with foil if it starts to brown too quickly on top. Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the tin. To serve, mix all the orange blossom yogurt ingredients together in a bowl and serve it with the cake.

FOOD

HOUMOUS SO MANY WAYS! This is the most basic houmous recipe, but I’ve also added some variations that I love. I’m very lazy so I make it all in the food processor. Makes enough for 6-8 people Ingredients 400g can chickpeas, drained and water reserved 3 tbsp tahini juice of 2-3 lemons 5 garlic cloves, crushed ½ tsp ground turmeric ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper a pinch of salt To garnish olive oil chopped parsley a pinch of paprika Method Drain the chickpeas, reserving some of the brine, and rinse under cold running water. Transfer to a large bowl. Process the chickpeas in a food processor or hand blender for a fine texture.Alternatively, mash by hand for a coarser dip. In a separate bowl, mix the tahini, lemon juice, chickpea water and garlic together to a runny consistency. Mix into the chickpeas with the turmeric and pepper, then season with salt to taste. Adjust the consistency and taste to suit with either extra lemon juice or chickpea brine. Chill for several hours to allow the flavours to infuse. Serve garnished with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkling of chopped parsley and a pinch of paprika. OR just put everything in to the food processor, starting with the garlic, then adding the chickpeas, liquid and remaining ingredients. This is such a simple way of making fresh houmous and it tastes amazing. Chilli and Cumin Houmous Just add 1 fresh chilli or 1 tsp dried chilli flakes and 1 level tsp of ground cumin. Beetroot and Aniseed Houmous Add 1 large cooked beetroot (roughly chopped) and ½ level tsp aniseed seeds to the blender.

ONION, PEPPER, FETA AND POMEGRANATE TART This dish is easy to throw together and so impressive on the table. Serves 6 as a main or 12 as a starter/meze Ingredients 5 large onions, sliced 50g butter 4 tbsp olive oil 1 red pepper, sliced 1 yellow pepper, sliced 1 courgette, cut into ribbons 1 tbsp sumac ½ tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp salt 200g cherry tomatoes 1 sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry (320g) 250g feta cheese 10 mint leaves, finely chopped pomegranate molasses for drizzling 75g pomegranate seeds (optional) 1 tbsp brown sugar 2 green chillies, finely chopped (and de-seeded if you don’t like too much heat) Method Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4 and line a baking tray with baking paper. Caramelise the onions in half the butter and oil in a pan over a medium heat for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and place on a plate. Add the rest of the oil and butter to the pan, then add the peppers and sauté for a minute. Add the courgette, sumac, turmeric, black pepper and salt, and continue to cook for a further minute. Remove from the heat, add the tomatoes to the pan and roll them in the oil mixture. Place the pre-rolled pastry on the prepared baking tray, rolling out a little more to go just over the edges, then fold them over to make a border. Evenly spread the caramelised onions over the pastry, then add the pepper and tomato mix. Crumble the feta over the top and sprinkle with the mint leaves. Place in the oven for 20 minutes, or until the pastry has browned. Remove from the oven, drizzle over the pomegranate molasses and sprinkle over the pomegranate seeds (if using). Serve immediately.

INTERVIEW

“IT’S QUITE A RIDE, so enjoy getting hooked on it!” Social Media and Strictly sensation Saffron Barker talks to Close Up about lockdown and a brand new Celebrity special of The Circle!

Hi Saffron! We are so excited to have you back on our screens, how did it feel to get back out there after being in lockdown? Ah thank you so much – I’m buzzing to be back! It feels so great to be on such a brilliant show to be honest. The Circle is such an interesting reality show, really fun, and this series raises money for charity [Stand Up To Cancer] – so it was a pleasure to be a part of it! It was the first time I’ve lived alone so was an experience, but I loved it! What advice would you give to people who may be mentally struggling in the current lockdown? What has personally helped me is speaking to someone about how I’m feeling. The situation at the moment, and over the past year is so unique and you only need to look at the stats on depression and mental health to realise you’re not alone. I personally find that appreciating those little joys lift me up – so going for a run, walking my dog Bella, listening to a funny podcast, facetiming my boyfriend – they’re lots of little lifts that can really impact my mood for the better. I’m really focusing on the future now, and so hopeful we can have some normality this summer.

You have been absolutely nailing the “Off-Duty” look, who would you say inspires you the most? Ah that is very kind! I love trying on different outfits and looks – and my job makes it easier to do that. I also have my own clothing collection with InTheStyle so I’m in the privileged position of being able to design what I like! I’d say my fashion inspo is Blake Lively though – she always look 10/10. This series will be The Circle’s first ever celebrity special, how has it been working with such a great group? It’s been an amazing experience – and what a line up! It’s going to be a great series, without a doubt. I played myself, but lots of others played other celebrities. It’s quite a ride so enjoy getting hooked on it – I can’t wait for the public reaction.

A huge congratulations on moving into your new home! Will you be showing us your renovation journey?

Can you tell us a little bit about what we can expect to see?

THANK YOU – yes, I moved into my dream home this week. I am officially a home-owner and it feels amazing. I feel so fortunate and grateful.

YES!! Drama, fun, friendships. It’s great TV whilst we’re still in lockdown – it’s not too serious. It’s watching a big mix of celebrities try to out play each other, all for charity. Who wins… that’s the question!

Of course. I am obsessed with interiors now – and can’t wait to get started on the reno – it’s going to be a big job but I’ll document the journey on YouTube and share my ups and downs along the way!

Between renovating your new home and appearing on TV, are you working on anything new?

Where have you been getting all your home inspiration from? INSTAGRAM AND PINTEREST – honestly, I spend hours and hours scrolling and making mood-boards. I am really enjoying the process though – it’s been a great way to fill time during lockdown for sure. It’s so tempting to purchase bits and pieces for the house but I’ve just needed to get in there first! The move was exhausting, so I’m still recovering from that, and have no idea where anything is!

48 // Close Up Magazine

I am still working very hard on my podcast with my mum, ‘Mum Made Me Do It’. Series 1 was so successful and Series 2 is out in March and we start recording soon – with some special guests! It’s such a passion project for me so for it to be a success is the best feeling! My mum and I had a billboard in Leicester Square – how cool is that?!

FILM REVIEW

WHAT’S ON NETFLIX The seemingly endless scroll of Netflix’s treasure trove of terrific shows and movies can be more than a little paralyzing when trying to choose something to watch. If you’ve just finished a good series and need a new one to fill the void, Close Up is assembling a monthly list of the best TV shows currently available on the streaming service, from classics of yesteryear to the hottest new titles. Below, we’ve rounded up the best shows on Netflix right now, so you can binge-watch without having to hunt for the right title.

MARCELLA Anna Friel returns for the third season of the gritty and gruelling police drama. Following the revelation at the end of the last series, it finds the titular detective (Friel) living undercover in Belfast as Keira Devlin, having infiltrated the notorious Maguire crime family while getting to grips with her mental health problems. We join the story as Marcella inches her way further into the Maguire clan and becoming increasingly entangled with the persona of Keira in the process.

MONARCA This Mexican crime drama series follows a family vying for control of their tequila company, Monarca, worth billions. Adult daughter Ana María has been abroad for the past two decades but she returns to Mexico at her father’s request. The series stars David Rencoret as ailing family patriarch Fausto Carranza, who picks Ana María as his successor over both her brothers (who understandably resent their father’s left-field pick).

GRAND ARMY This powerful, occasionally upsetting teen drama is set at Brooklyn’s largest public high school, and sees a suicide bomb detonate close to the school in episode one, resulting in a tense day for students stuck inside. Odessa A’zion plays our heroine Joey Del Marco, a popular, cool queen bee who’s known for her body positivity and who hopes to become the school’s dance captain – but instead endures a deeply harrowing storyline.

LUPIN

From executive producer Shonda Rhimes comes a period drama like no other that has become Netflix’s most watched series ever. Bridgerton is set during the Regency period in England and follows the powerful Bridgerton family as they navigate love, marriage and scandal. The show is based on a series of novels with each on focusing on a different Bridgerton sibling – this first series follows eldest sister Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and her turbulent marriage to one of London’s most eligible bachelors, Duke Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page).

Arsène Lupin, the belle époque burglar created by French novelist Maurice Leblanc in the early 1900s, is reinvented as Assane Diop, a first-generation Frenchman with a mania for Lupin books and a grudge against the powerful blackguards who decades ago framed his father for a theft he didn’t commit. Armed with drones, social media bots, and hacking skills alongside the traditional tools of the trade like fake beards, picklocks, and quick wits, Diop hunts down his adversaries one by one, on a quest for the truth about his father’s fate.

FIR EFLY LA NE

THE OFFICE (US)

Katherine Heigl’s new Netflix show Firefly Lane has been grabbing attention this month, thanks to its reflection of female friendships and bingeworthy plot. The story follows two best friends Sully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke), who have known each other for four decades. Despite their lives going different directions, they’ve always stayed close. But the series finishes on a major cliff-hanger, which has left many fans wondering whether a second season is inevitable.

Steve Carrell’s long-running workplace sitcom is widely regarded as one of the best American sitcoms of recent memory. While the first season suffers for playing a little too close to Ricky Gervais’ original, the show begins forging its own path from season two and quickly blossoms into something special. Carrell leads the large ensemble cast for most of the series, with hilarious supporting roles for the likes of John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson and Mindy Kaling. This is the comfort television we need right now.

Working as an estate agent

DURING A PANDEMIC! Describe some of the difficult challenges you faced? We all heard about the increase in domestic violence during lockdown and we had first-hand experience of this. A young couple who rented through us had a dispute which led to one party being hospitalised and the other being arrested. I then liaised with both sets of parents to arrange for the tenancy to be surrendered. This was a particularly emotional time, a very sad period for all. Also, some tenants were affected financially so were short on rental payments. I had to act as mediator between landlords and tenants to create manageable repayment plans, allowing tenants to feel comfortable that they still had a roof over their heads and reassuring landlords that they would still receive their rent. Caroline, Property Manager. When the property market reopened how did you find it?

A

s with many industries, we saw the housing market close in early 2020, however the boom which occurred in the summer kept estate agents extremely busy. I thought you might like to know some of the highs and lows of working as an estate agent during this time, so I asked the team for their reflections: What was your experience during the first lockdown? The majority of the staff were furloughed as we weren’t allowed to do viewings, myself and Caroline, the Property Manager, were the only two staff working. It was a huge concern what impact it would have on the business and as many will agree, it is difficult working from home and home schooling the kids’ as well. However, it gave us the opportunity to reorganise so many working practices that have been extremely beneficial in allowing safe viewings and which have simplified admin. So, stressful but also rewarding. Theo, Branch Manager.

The team came back to work with a new social distancing policy in place which was strange to begin with; definitely no lunching together. Extra calls were needed to clients and applicants to ensure no new symptoms before viewings and to allow essential maintenance to go ahead on rental properties. It was a frantically busy period with increased email and telephone queries. At times we were pulling our hair out at the number of viewings and the longer working hours that we had to do whilst always ensuring the extra safety measures where observed. Theo, Branch Manager. Have there been any positives? It’s been a challenge, stressful and a constant concern but it needs to be done to earn a crust and I’m so happy and grateful to be working. We have also seen so much kindness and cooperation amongst our clients and the very best of community spirit during the hardest of times. Captain Tom and our love of the NHS have really brought us all together. Bulent, Senior Lettings Negotiator.

INTERVIEW

STRICTLY STUD We caught up with Strictly heart-throb Giovanni Pernice to talk all things lockdown, mental health and more. Hi Giovanni! We were thrilled to see you standing up for your Strictly co-star Shirley Ballas against online bullies. Is this something you are passionate about? It’s such a shame people feel the need to lash out like that. Shirley is a legend in this industry and knows what she’s talking about. I completely respect people can have their own opinions and at the end of the day, it’s an entertainment show, but some people really take it too far and that’s not ok – I always say this is a reflection on them, not the person they’re trolling. I will always stand up for people and support what’s right. Online trolls and social media has been mentally damaging for a very long time, have you experienced this yourself? I have been very fortunate. On the whole, I haven’t had to deal with too much negativity online. For me, the focus is always going to be on my job. It takes a lot of dedication to stay in the best possible shape both mentally and physically, and that’s how I stay on top of my mental health – through training, exercise, eating right and spreading positive vibes! During lockdown, what has helped keep your mind active?

Who has been your favourite celebrity partner on Strictly?

I’ve been running my online dance classes which have been really motivating and has kept me active both mentally and physically. My students send me videos of themselves at the end and it’s so amazing to see them improving the more they learn – it’s been great getting to interact with people in this way.

Ah you can’t ask me that! I have been very lucky to have some incredible partners. I couldn’t possibly choose but I will tell you a couple of my favourite routines, how’s that? I loved ‘Fever’ the couple’s choice dance with Faye Tozer, and ‘Vogue’ with Michelle Visage was very cool. I love when get to mix it up and do something a bit different like that.

Other than dancing, what are your favourite hobbies?

Who would be your dream celebrity partner?

A lot of people don’t know this about me, but I play the drums – I love it! Anyone who’s seen me on my own tours will have seen me play, and I’ll be doing it again in my new show ‘This Is Me’. Before lockdown I was also having singing lessons, and I play football too.

That’s easy – it’s Elizabeth, The Queen. She’s a very popular lady isn’t she, so I think we’d be in with a good chance of winning.

It takes a lot of dedication to stay in the best possible shape both mentally and physically, and that’s how I stay on top of my mental health. 56 // Close Up Magazine

What are your thoughts on ‘The Strictly Curse’? Ah the Strictly Curse, classic question! To be honest, I know it’s naturally going to come up every year and I just laugh and take it in a light-hearted way. My priority on the show is always the dancing, the production and my amazing friends on the show. Being in the spotlight you have become quite the ladies man! Are there any new relationships on the horizon? At the moment I’m single but that’s ok! I’m focusing on my online dance-classes, eating well, watching great TV and making fun IG and TikTok content with my housemate Kai, getting as much exercise in as I can [safely.] Romance and relationships will come I’m sure, just not right now.

Giovanni is hosting exclusive online dance classes, Monday – Friday 5-6pm. Book now at www.lockdownclass.co.uk @pernicegiovann1
