Packed with

POWER When putting together the pages of each edition, we have always had a clear vision of what we want Close Up to be. A magazine that is glossy, upbeat, funny and inspirational but with its head still planted in reality so that you could not only covet our glamour filled pages but know and understand what was happening in your local area. This edition points out two exceptionally important campaigns that mean so much to each individual person. So, this month, having Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson grace our cover shouts out so many words – bravery, courage, inspiration, power. Little Mix certainly proved they have the “power” when Jesy Nelson broke records for BBC with her courageous documentary attacking online trolls and bullying. The Little Mix singer revealed in the documentary that she once tried to take her own life in 2013 after being barraged with vicious social media uses abusing her everyday since winning The X Factor in 2011. Jesy’s bravery and courage has inspired others across the UK to speak out about bullying, cyberbullying and facing the dark side of social media. See page 9 to read more on Jesy’s journey.

COVER INTERVIEW

Jesy

NELSON Little Mix star Jesy Nelson goes on a journey of rehabilitation as she opens up about abuse she has suffered at the hands of cyberbullies and its effects on her mental health.

Close Up Magazine // 9

COVER INTERVIEW

Jesy Nelson has received a wealth of support from fans following the premiere of her ‘Odd One Out’ documentary, which aired on BBC One. ‘Odd One Out’ saw Jesy open up about the impact cyberbullies have had on her life and mental health after she rose to fame with pop band Little Mix on The X Factor in 2011, explaining in the first two minutes that getting social media had “completely changed [her] life”. “The whole world had an opinion on me, and they weren’t good ones,” Jesy said. “From the minute them comments started, it become the worst time of my life. It literally consumed every part of me.” Jesy was a barmaid in Dagenham, east London, who dreamed of becoming an entertainer. She watched The X Factor in the pub where she worked and thought, ‘I could win that’. In 2011, she entered the competition, became one quarter of a girl band, who became her best friends, and went ahead and won the whole thing. It was her dream come true. It was also the early days of social media morphing into what it is today. Even as Little Mix progressed through the weekly knockout stages, Nelson was receiving comments and messages from online trolls who criticised her weight and face, and told her, in a variety of creatively cruel ways, that she did not deserve to live. She was barely 20 years old. She talks candidly about how this onslaught chipped away at not only her self-esteem, but her sense of who she was. She can barely watch footage of herself from that time or look at pictures. She had been happy. As Jesy from Little Mix, she was miserable, constantly questioning herself and struggling with what sounds like an eating disorder. Eventually, she attempted suicide.

10 // Close Up Magazine

Throughout the documentary, Jesy reflected on the horrible comments and how they affected her self-worth, admitting that she started to believe the things people were saying about her online. “I felt embarrassed, I felt ashamed,” she said. “It got so bad that I couldn’t even bring myself to get out of bed in the morning and I just stopped turning up for work.” Bandmates Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall also appeared to discuss how Jesy’s torment affected the band, revealing that the trolls had taken away her passion for the job and it did cause difficulties in the group. “She is a little bit of a nightmare when it comes to video shoots and photo shoots and approving things and it has been a bit hard within the group,” Leigh-Anne explained. “People don’t realise the effects of what bully[ing] and trolling can actually do to someone. The trolls took away her love for it and her passion,” she continued. “But how does she get that back? How does she go back to feeling confident and feeling amazing from all that happened to her?” Perrie added: “It was a constant thing that just kept eating away at her and eating away at her and she got to a point where I think she just couldn’t handle it anymore.” As Jesy opened up about her suicide attempt, she also met with others who have been targeted by trolls, as well as family members of those like 16-year-old Sian Waterhouse who died by suicide as a result of cyberbullying. Viewers, including McFly’s Harry Judd, EastEnders’ Tilly Keeper and Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown, hailed the documentary as a heart-breaking but necessary watch, calling for it to be shown in schools because of its important subject matter.

It got so bad that I couldn’t even bring myself to get out of bed in the morning and I just stopped turning up for work.

Close Up Magazine // 11

COVER INTERVIEW

From the minute them comments started, it become the worst time of my life. Her mother talks movingly about how much she wishes she could have her pre-fame daughter back. Her boyfriend Chris Hughes, himself a product of the fame factory (in his case, Love Island), wishes she could be more comfortable in her skin. But this programme is about cyberbullying, not reality TV, and Nelson widens her scope to meet other young people who have been bullied online. The frequency with which the words “kill yourself” are used as a throwaway insult is a shocking indictment of our times. Most upsetting of all is a visit to the parents of a teenager, Sian, who took her own life after being bullied on social media. There is a deep seam of sadness running through her story, but Jesy explains that her openness is an attempt to reach out to others going through whatever version of this trauma they are experiencing. According to a sobering statistic at the end of the film, seven out of 10 young people have been cyberbullied. She meets a support group and sits in on a class provided by an anti-bullying organisation. In that workshop, they suggest that one might intervene if someone is seen to be receiving nasty comments, by saying something nice, to counteract the horror. It doesn’t seem like nearly enough, but perhaps it is a start. Surprisingly, Jesy doesn’t feel that social media is all bad. It allows her to interact with her fans, she says. When she posts a throwback image of herself in the old X Factor days, she seems overjoyed by the heart emojis that people leave in response. We would encourage anyone who identifies with the topics raised in this article to reach out. Organisations who can offer support include Samaritans on 116 123 (www.samaritans. org) or Mind on 0300 123 3393 (www.mind. org.uk). It’s a walk in the park! Jenny strolls out after robot-assisted knee replacement Sixty-seven-year-old Jenny was worried that severe knee pain would keep her from the hills she used to spend hours each day walking while at her holiday home in Barden in the Yorkshire Dales. Even strolls around Hampstead Heath, where Jenny lives with husband Alan, were being cut short as knee pain began to dictate distance and was even keeping her awake at night. Something had to be done! It was then that she visited Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Tim Waters at Spire Bushey Hospital and learned about the latest in robotic technology in the form of the NAVIO Surgical System. Designed and developed by internationally-renowned technology experts Smith and Nephew, the system allows surgeons to minimise the amount of bone removed from a damaged knee before positioning the implant in the exactly the right place to achieve optimum joint stability. Unlike other robotic-assisted tools, NAVIO takes away the need for a pre-operative CT scan to provide an image of the operation area. Instead a probe feeds a 3D ‘roadmap’ of the knee into a computer, providing the surgeon with all the information needed to create a specific surgical plan for each individual patient. The computer then feeds back information about the knee allowing the surgeon to accurately remove damaged bone to make way for the implant. If the tool is passed over a part of the knee that doesn’t need removing then the cutters automatically stop… not starting again until it reaches parts mapped out for removal.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Tim Waters explained: “Robotic assisted technology allows me to plan the surgery and restore natural movement making it more precise than ever before.” His views were echoed by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Richard Carrington, who carried out the first Navio knee replacement in Europe. He said: “It allows me to consistently optimise implant placement which, in turn, will give the patient a more naturalfeeling knee that will have a longer lifespan than replacements fitted using conventional methods.” As for Jenny, she is delighted with the end result: “I had been warned by friends that a knee replacement was very painful, sometimes for months afterwards, and much worse than a hip replacement, which I actually had in 2016. “I did suffer moderate pain for 10-14 days, but just three weeks after the operation I was walking without crutches or a stick and suffering very little pain indeed. “My knee seems to be getting stronger with each day and I’m already enjoying long walks in the park with my dog. I really do feel like this operation has allowed me to live the way I want to. “I am amazed at my recovery compared to what I have heard from other people who have had knee surgery and would encourage anyone thinking of a knee replacement to take a look into what the Navio system has to offer.”

HAIR NOTES

Your Hair

HERO

As summer 2019 comes to an end, we look at the best way to help prevent your hair from becoming a hair disaster this winter and combat the harsh effects the cold weather on your hair. @jasoncollierjc

Stylist to the stars Jason Collier shares his expert advice with Close Up readers

Top TIPS WASH YOUR 1 DON’T HAIR TOO OFTEN

On trend

There is a temptation to have squeaky-clean hair every day, but cutting back on how often you wash your hair can be a good thing. Too much shampooing can strip away the hair’s natural oils that are already there to condition and protect. Opt for a quality shampoo that suits your hair type, particularly if you have colourtreated hair.

2 ROOT OF THE MATTER

Celebrity STYLE Meghan Markle’s signature low-key updo continues to trend. You’ll feel royally elegant with this wispy style, which you can achieve by spraying your crown with hairspray before brushing it back into a bun. Pull a few pieces out to get the duchess’s wind-blown look.

When you’re washing your hair, and this may seem obvious but it’s easily forgotten when we’re rushing in the mornings, concentrate shampoo on the roots of your hair and conditioner on the ends. Again, look for a conditioner specific to your hair type. Squeezing excess water gently out of your hair before applying conditioner will help the conditioner penetrate the hair shaft. Leavein conditioners are especially good to use at this time of year to keep hair hydrated and healthy looking.

3 AVOID HOT SHOWERS

It’s tempting to turn your shower up to full blast when it’s freezing outside, but this can damage your scalp – and your skin, by stripping it of moisture. Instead, keep showers and baths to ten minutes and make sure the water is mid-to-lukewarm.

Product of the month

Baby it’s COLD OUTSIDE! During winter, wash and go becomes something of the past, and styling your hair with straighteners, tongs and blow dryers becomes more apparent. Protect the silky glow summer gave you with my product of the month and help prevent your hair become brittle and dull. TRESemme Heat Protect Spray 300ml superdrug.com £5.49

22 // Close Up Magazine

4 USE A HEAT PROTECT SPRAY

If you do use heated appliances frequently, the best way to keep your hair in the best shape is to use a good quality heat protect spray.

5 DRY SHAMPOO

Everyone uses dry shampoo, but very few apply it properly. Apply thoroughly at the roots then blast it out with a dryer. Most people rub it into the hair and leave it, but you need to remove the product to get rid of excess dirt and oils.

FILM INTERVIEW

Bryce

DALLAS HOWARD The Rocketman and Jurassic World star discusses getting into character, and what makes the film so special to audiences.

Having reached international stardom as part of the Jurassic World franchise, Bryce Dallas Howard deals with smaller – but no less dramatic – subject matter in Rocketman, the biopic of Elton John out on DVD and digital this month. She plays Sheila, the mother of Elton (played by Taron Egerton) who is not always a positive force in the young man’s life.

For Howard, the experience of making the film was unlike anything she had done before. “It was actually a really interesting process, because I came on board the project relatively late. I showed up not knowing what to expect – in one room people are dancing, in one room people are singing, and you’re like ‘oh this is a proper musical!’” she beams at a press conference for the film. “We have this enormous privilege to celebrate Bernie and Elton while they’re alive and well and performing. Normally when you’re telling the story of someone’s life, they’re gone! There was none of that loss, there was only celebration at the end. To hear Elton crying just a few seats away from us (at the premiere) was incredibly surreal. What an honour to be a part of that.”

To hear Elton crying just a few seats away from us was incredibly surreal.

The research was also something that required a different approach, as she reveals she didn’t turn to Elton John for advice on playing the part. “There weren’t things said to me directly, because no one wants to talk shit about their mother!” she says, laughing. “What happened was that there was a real passing of the torch to Taron (from Elton), and so I went to Dexter and Taron with questions. Of course, I was speaking to people who know Elton intimately, knew Sheila and observed their dynamic. But because (Elton and Taron) had such an intimate friendship I went to him.” Rocketman proved a huge hit at the cinema, and Howard believes what makes the film special are it’s cinematic elements. “It takes a giant spectacle to get people to go to the movies” she says. “People go to the movies for an experience, that are memorable and can be shared. Stories about musicians bring that spectacle and demand a united experience. It would be a shame to watch this Rocketman is movie alone”. out on DVD and Digital now.

HEALTH

Be proud of

YOUR SMILE

7 WAYS

your lifestyle can improve your dental health 1

Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Ensure you’re getting plenty of leafy greens which are high in calcium. Foods like apples and celery also act like a toothbrush, scraping excess debris from the tooth’s surface. It may be surprising, but cheese is also good for your teeth – the calcium and protein naturally help strengthen enamel.

2

Ditch the cigarettes. We all know that smoking is extremely damaging to our overall health, and the effects on oral health are especially detrimental. Tobacco causes bad breath, yellowing by staining the teeth, and puts you at high risk of tooth decay, gum disease and many other very serious illnesses.

3

Limit your sugar intake. Overindulging in sugar can lead to a number of health problems including diabetes and obesity, with the damaging effects on teeth ranging from cavities to full on periodontitis. Natural bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar, creating acid which leads to plaque which eats away at enamel, so go easy on the treats!

4

Cut down on alcohol. It’s best to avoid altogether, but many people aren’t aware of the alarmingly high sugar content in alcoholic drinks, particularly prosecco and cocktails. Alcohol is also a dehydrant, reducing bacteriafighting saliva in the mouth creating a higher risk of disease – not to mention bad breath!

5

Drink tap water. If you live in an area with fluoridated water, make the most of what comes out of your tap. Fluoride helps protect the teeth against harmful bacteria and acids. If this isn’t the case for your area, be sure to use a toothpaste that contains plenty of it.

6

Take supplements. Busy lifestyles can often mean we don’t always get the essential vitamins from food etc. Vitamin D and Calcium are essential for dental health, and I always recommend Co-Enzyme Q10 supplements for optimum support. Check out this month’s product recommendation for more info.

7

Maintain a good oral health routine. The best thing you can do for your teeth and gums is to look after them every day. Brush twice daily, rinse with a non-alcoholic mouthwash and floss in the evenings to ensure every section of your mouth, and all surfaces of your teeth are fresh, clean and free of debris.

Dr Richard Marques one of the UK’s leading celebrity dentists, known as ‘The King of Smiles’.

CASE STUDY We transform a lot of smiles and we never stop being blown away by a before and after! This patient underwent six months smiles (short term braces) followed by tooth whitening and composite bonding with Dr Mario Correia. Such a fabulous change.

PATIENCE JOURNEY EXPERIENCE I’d always wanted to get my teeth whitened however I was really concerned about my teeth being too sensitive to do it and that it might not work in my teeth. A free smile consultation was advertised and I thought it would be a good way to understand what options were available and cost. As soon as I met Mario I felt at ease and he was very knowledgeable. He put together a treatment plan with all options and costs and I selected what I wanted to progress and timescales were agreed. The whole process has been straightforward and I’m delighted with my new smile.

Why you chose us? I’d seen a lot of case studies about the cosmetic work Dr Mario and was interested to see how he could help me with my smile. How you feel about us? The level of care I received throughout the treatment was excellent, Dr Mario always explained exactly what would happen in the appointment, took time to let me ask questions and also dealt with my nervousness around visiting the dentist brilliantly. Do you recommend us? I’d definitely recommend Dentist on the Green, they are professional but very friendly and approachable.

FILM INTERVIEW

Joker

IN THE PACK Joaquin Phoenix discusses getting into character as Batman’s deadliest enemy, The Joker.

In a career spanning three decades, Joaquin Phoenix has earned a reputation as one of the most intense and impressive stars in Hollywood. Coming from the famed Phoenix acting family, he first broke out in the mid-90’s making quirky dramas To Die For, U-Turn and 8mm with Nicolas Cage. In the 2000’s, he established himself as a star and an Oscar winner, before pushing the boundaries this decade with films like Her, The Master, and his new film Joker. Directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover trilogy), the film is a dark and gloomy take on the origins of famous Batman foe, The Joker. Set in the 80’s Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a troubled comedian searching for happiness in a world that seems to delight in rejecting him. Fleck’s troubled mind, plus a series of unsettling incidents, slowly push him over the edge as he becomes Gotham City’s greatest scourge. The film also stars the great Robert De Niro as a TV host and Arthur’s idol, as well as Zazie Beetz as a neighbour he befriends.

We were getting into medication and what issues he might have, but (I thought) let’s step away from that. We want to have the room to create what we want”. Once he had the philosophy of the role he wanted to play, the transformation began. “The first thing was the weight loss, that’s really what I started with” he says, having lost 52 pounds (over three and a half stone) for the role. “As it turns out, that impacts your psychology, and you really start to go mad when you lose that much weight in that amount of time. There’s also a book about political assassins that I thought was interesting, and breaks down the different types of personalities that do those sorts of things”. The actor also kept a journal to build his character’s mindset. “That was really helpful but I wasn’t sure how to start… It became a really important part of discovery for me at that time.” The film has celebrated at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, with critics comparing the dark drama to the likes of Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. It also marks a return to dark comic book movies, after eleven years of the colour and spectacle of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, which has dominated over DC films in recent years. Yet, for Phoenix, the film is more than just a story about the decline of a psyche. “(I was) interested in the light of Arthur for lack of a better word” he explains. “It wasn’t just the torment, it was the joy, his struggle to find happiness and to feel connected. To have warmth and love. I don’t think of a character as tormented.”

I didn’t refer to any past iterations of the character.

A comic book movie is not normally associated with an actor of Phoenix’s background, which is mainly made up of dark dramas such as You Were Never Really Here or Oscar winning titles like Walk The Line. However, there was something different about this project that meant the 44-year-old just had to say yes. “The attraction to make this film and this character was that we were going to approach it in our own way, so, for me, I didn’t refer to any past iterations of the character” he says at a press conference for the film. “It just felt like something that was our creation in some ways.”

Indeed, it’s the elusive nature of the character that was something Phoenix worked very hard to protect. “I think what was so attractive is he’s so hard to define and you don’t really want to define him” he says. “There were times I would find I was identifying certain parts of his personality and then I would back away from that because I wanted there to remain a kind of mystery. Every day felt like we were discovering new aspects of the character. I wanted the freedom to create something that wasn’t identifiable. This is a fictional character. I didn’t want a psychiatrist to be able to identify the kind of person he was.

The role of The Joker has taken its toll on the actors who have played him over the years – Jared Leto famously came to set in character on the set of Suicide Squad, gifting his cast mates live rats. However, Phoenix remarks that working on the film was a pleasure, not a trial. “Throughout the course of shooting, every day felt like we were discovering new aspects of the character and shades of his personality, up until the very last day” he enthuses. “He was so many Joker is different things to me at different released in times… The more unpredictable it cinemas was the more inspiring”. Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! www.keepingupwithkaterina.com @keepingupwithkaterina When’s the right time? Is there ever a right time? When it comes to starting a family or even extending a family, there will always be a worry about timing (whether it’s from one party or both). I used to always say that there’s never a right time - which I kind of do stand by - I think if I was waiting for the right time to have Rico I would have definitely been without him for a few more years. But what I have learnt when it comes to having children, is that there are certainly better times. I don’t think you realise until they’re actually here just how much everything in life changes. You cannot leave the room anymore without having another little life to consider - let alone progressing in your career, earning your degree, start your own business or any other life goals for that matter. It’s not to say you can’t do it in all honesty having Rico has made me more passionate than I’ve ever been to make things work, and if it’s one thing parents are good at, it’s juggling all that life has to bring - but it just becomes that little bit harder (well a lot harder at times). The pressures that these little blessings put on you can be a lot - you want to do better, you expect to do better, you have to do better. I think if you are planning on taking a step to become a parent - it’s important to think past conception, past pregnancy

and past your maternity leave. Is where you are at in your career where you want to be when you return to work? Is this something that can support you and your family if you have to go part-time when returning? Are you happy to leave your baby to return to that line of work? Mum guilt is real and leaving your little ones to go back to work which isn’t fulfilling or something which you don’t feel as though you strive in is harder than anything. So make plans, consider yourself, find what makes you happy, what can fit into your new life with your family, plan your child care, wait them extra few months before trying for a baby if it means you’ll be more comfortable when they come - it really does make all the difference with making sure your time is the best it can be!

Steak with anchovy butter Flavoured butters are a great way to add an extra dimension to your meal. This rosemary and anchovy butter works so well with rich steak – its saltiness complimenting it perfectly. Preparation time: 20 minutes, plus resting Cooking time: 25 minutes Total time: 45 minutes, plus resting Serves 2 Ingredients 1/2 x 650g pack charlotte potatoes, halved or quartered 2 rosemary sprigs, plus 1 tsp finely chopped leaves 3 garlic cloves, 2 peeled and bashed, 1 crushed 4 tsp olive oil 2 x 150g sirloin steaks 100g Lurpak Slightly Salted Butter, softened a little 10 anchovy fillets in olive oil, drained and roughly chopped 200g Tenderstem broccoli spears Method Preheat the oven to 220˚C, gas mark 7. In a roasting tin, toss the potatoes with the rosemary sprigs, bashed garlic cloves and 2 tsp oil. Season and roast for 25 minutes, tossing halfway. Take the steaks out of their packaging and set aside on kitchen paper until they reach room temperature. Meanwhile, put the butter, chopped rosemary, crushed garlic and anchovies in a small food processor with a grinding of black pepper. Whizz until combined. Scrape onto cling film and roll into a cylinder about 4cm in diameter. Pop in the freezer to firm up quickly or make in advance and chill. Put a heavy frying pan over a high heat. Brush the steaks all over with the remaining 2 tsp oil. Season and, using tongs to hold the steak in place, cook the fat for 1-2 minutes, then fry for 2 minutes on each side, ensuring all surfaces of the meat are thoroughly cooked. Transfer to plates to rest for 5 minutes. Top each with 2 thin slices of the anchovy butter, reserving the remainder (see Cook’s tip). As the steaks rest, simmer the broccoli in a pan for 2-3 minutes. Drain and serve immediately with the steak and potatoes.

FILM INTERVIEW

Brad

PITT The Hollywood icon talks masculinity and Oscars.

Brad Pitt continues his storied career with Ad Astra, a sci-fi movie about an astronaut (Pitt) who ventures into space to stop his father (Tommy Lee Jones) who poses a threat to humanity. The film explores both our future as a species and also our very nature. “Having grown up in an era where we’re taught to be strong, not show weakness, don’t be disrespected” he says at a press conference for the film. “There’s a certain value in that, but there’s also a barrier that’s created with this kind of embracing of the self, because you’re denying, in a sense, those pains or the things you feel shame, whether real or imagined. We were asking the question, is there a better definition for us? Does being more open provide you with a better relation with your loved ones and with yourself? At the end of the day, that’s certainly what we were after.”

Every year I see amazing talent get acknowledged and I see amazing talent not get acknowledged. The filming involved a lot of vigorous stunt work, and Pitt turned to Ocean’s 11 co-star and fellow space movie alum George Clooney for advice and sympathy. “Doing a space film is a little bit like a Peter Pan stage production, hanging from wires” he says. “George and I exchanged some discomfort stories.” Pitt is directed in the film by James Gray (The Lost City of Z), with the two digging deep to get the best performance possible. “James and I don’t have the normal male relationship” he explains. “He would send really personal

48 // Close Up Magazine

emails, exposing ideas from his own life. That really would define the day’s work and the scenes were honed by it, and it’s something I still value. It was a unique experience”. Ad Astra has been met with positive reviews, with some mentioning a possible Oscar run. Pitt remains one of the biggest names to never win an Oscar for his acting (he has won a Best Picture Oscar as producer of 12 Years A Slave). “Every year I see amazing talent get acknowledged and I see amazing talent not get acknowledged” he says when pressed on the topic. “When your number comes up it’s great fun, and when someone else’s Ad Astra is in number comes up, they’re usually cinemas now your friends, and so I’ll leave it at that” he says, before joking “How’s that for a dodge??”

TRAVEL

Visit Idyllic

VIETNAM Head East for a taste of luxury and a cultural trip of a lifetime.

Offering the same wonderful ingredients as its near neighbour Thailand – tropical rainforests, white-sand beaches and exotic cuisine – Vietnam also boasts 2,000 miles of coastline, plenty of historic sights and French colonial landmarks. Since the advent of direct flights from the UK to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), the country is fast becoming a popular holiday choice. Where can I stay? Just an hour’s flight from the frenetic pace of Ho Chi Minh, The Anam, a newly-opened beachfront resort featuring 117 villas and 96 rooms and suites on the Cam Ranh peninsula. Backed by jungle-clad mountains, this tranquil oasis offers a luxury experience with all the mod cons you’d expect from a five-star hotel, but without compromising on providing an authentic taste of traditional Vietnam. The stylish hotel features colonial-inspired décor with white louvred shutters, dark wood, mosaic tiles and lantern lights, as well as hundreds of artworks from Vietnamese artists. After being shown to the garden view suite, complete with private balcony and spacious stone-walled bathroom, grab a fresh coconut drink and make your way to the beach. With a 300-metre beachfront, aptly called Long Beach, while away the hours sunbathing. As the sun sets, sip mai tai cocktails on the outdoor terrace at the Saigon Bar overlooking the vibrant green lawns, below the towering coconut trees. The resort boasts three infinity pools, including an adults-only option and one overlooking the beach for those who don’t like sand between their toes! As well as a beautiful Balinese-themed spa, the luxury resort is soon to offer a Greg Norman-designed golf course.

Where can I eat and drink? Overlooking the beach, the hotel’s Lang Viet restaurant is the place to go for sundowner cocktails and fragrant Vietnamese cuisine. We tucked into prawn spring rolls, followed by a zesty noodle salad topped with crispy beef. Be sure to head along to the hotel’s weekly Mama’s Cooking nights at Lang Viet, where mothers of the staff gather to create a buffet of Vietnamese food for guests using recipes that have been handed down for generations. Favourites are the pho noodle soup, crispy Vietnamese pancakes and bo nouong la lot (grilled beef in betel leaf). What else can I do? Take the hotel’s Art Trail, a private Vespa tour of Nha Trang’s thriving local art scene. You will be whizzed and weaved through the city’s busy traffic to visit several local artists at their studios, workshops and homes. You’ll be met with a warm greeting and home-made snacks as you browse the creations. Photography lovers will want to pay a visit to Mai Loc, a celebrated international photographer, who has risen from poverty after a Norwegian couple gifted him a camera, at his gallery on Nguyen Thien Thuat. After an adrenaline-pumping scooter ride, the perfect way to get your rate down will be a relaxing traditional Balinese massage at the hotel’s Sri Mara Spa. There are also sunset yoga sessions on the beach for further chill time. The Anam offers complimentary shuttle bus trips to Nha Trang, around 30 kilometres away, and it’s definitely worth visiting either the daily Dam market in the morning for souvenirs and local handicrafts, or the night market next to the Cultural Centre.

TRAVEL

This tranquil oasis offers a luxury experience with all the mod cons you’d expect from a five-star hotel, but without compromising on providing an authentic taste of traditional Vietnam. What are the must-see sights?

Which stars will I see?

Take in some of the main historical sites including Notre Dame Cathedral and other French colonial landmarks, as well as a quick browse of the boutiques along the pedestrianised Nguyen Hue Boulevard.

One of Angelia Jolie and Brad Pitt’s children Pax Thien was adopted from a Vietnamese orphanage and the family returned when they were a couple. On one trip, the couple ate at Vietnamese restaurant Cuc Gach Quan. Pay a visit to the courtyard set in an old renovated house and loved the stewed pork clay pot, soft shell crab and mango and chili salad. Marcella actress Anna Friel took her daughter Gracie to the ecofriendly island of Con Dao recently, while I’m A Celebrity – Get Me Out Of Here! Star Scarlett Moffatt headed to Vietnam with her best friend in May.

If you’re not afraid to barter, Ben Thanh Market is the place to head for a bargain. While the hustle and bustle of traders and hundreds of shoppers haggling over their ‘best price’ is an experience in itself, it’s also a great place to pick up souvenirs. Come home with lovely crockery, including ramen bowls and tea cups as well as colourful homemade jewellery and printed scarves. For those looking for more upmarket purchases, try the fashionable Dong Khoi Street where you can buy beautiful Vietnamese silk clothing at Thuy Design House and stylish lifestyle homeware at L’Usine Concept Store & Café.

How do I get there? Vietnam Airlines (www.vietnamairlines.com) operates the UK’s only non-stop scheduled service to Vietnam, with daily Dreamliner flights from London Heathrow to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Returns start from £464pp. Nightly rates at the fivestar The Anam, start from £157 for a balcony garden view room. For more information visit www.theanam.com or email info@theanam.com

FILM REVIEW

NEW IN THE MOVIES by James Luxford As we edge towards Christmas, we’ve got some dark superhero stories, powerful dramas, and exciting previews for you. Enjoy!

JOKER

4th October One of the most anticipated films of the year, Joaquin Phoenix stars in an origin story about Batman’s greatest foe. He plays Arthur Fleck, a struggling comedian in 1980’s Gotham who is pushed too far by an uncaring society, turning him into The Joker. After years of superhero universes, it’s refreshing to see a comic book movie with an adult feel, and one executed so perfectly by director Todd Haynes (The Hangover).

HHHHH AMERICAN WOMAN 11th October

Sienna Miller gives a remarkable performance in this drama directed by Jake Scott (son of Ridley). She plays a single mother forced to raise her grandson when her teenage daughter goes missing. Set over the course of a decade, this gritty and emotionally raw film is pulled along by Miller, who showcases a depth that suggests she’s been wasted in blockbuster roles. Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul and Christina Hendricks round out what is a surprising and rewarding drama, which is definitely worth seeking out.

HHHHH MYSTIFY: MICHAEL HUTCHENCE 18th October

A documentary in the style of 2015’s Amy, looking at the life and untimely death of INXS singer Michael Hutchence. Putting a human face to one of music’s most enigmatic tragedies, the documentary is a revealing look at the man behind the headlines, aided by contributions from former partner Kylie Minogue, his family, and his INXS band mates. A must-see for music fans who want to learn more about an infamous performer who, like so many others in his industry, left the world too soon.

HHHHH LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO 25th October

A sharp and funny story about a man named Jimmie (Jimmie Fails) trying to reclaim his grandfather’s house in San Francisco, only to find the rapidly changing city he once called home is slowly pushing him out. Addressing issues such as gentrification and America’s ongoing problem with race, there is something in this incredibly well-made movie that everyone will find relatable – the quest to find belonging. A sad and timely story told beautifully, this is an indie gem that will make you (and hopefully Oscar voters) think carefully about the world.

HHHHH 60 // Close Up Magazine

Also Out This Month... JUDY

4th October Renee Zellweger plays the late great Judy Garland in this drama about the Wizard of Oz star’s final days while performing in London. Filled with music and glamour, this film promises to chronicle one of the most infamous downfalls in the world of show business. It’s been touted as one of the frontrunners for next year’s Oscars, and received warm reviews so far, with special praise reserved for Zellweger’s star performance. Would it win your vote? Find out on the 4th!

GEMINI MAN 11th October

The world of special effects is taking movies in new and unbelievable directions, nowhere more so than this new action film from director Ang Lee. Will Smith plays an ageing assassin who finds out that the operative out to kill him is in fact his younger clone. Incredibly, Will Smith plays his present and younger self thanks to the miracles of computer animation, meaning we get to see who would win in a fight between modern-day and 90s versions of the actor! It’s all very new and spectacular, but Lee will have to deliver a gripping performance to match the eye popping innovations.

MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL 18th October

The Disney remakes of the last 10 years or so have been fairly below par, but one film that found a lot of success with audiences is 2014’s Maleficent, a new take on Sleeping Beauty starring Angelina Jolie. The star is back in the role, this time protecting her magical land from an evil queen (Michelle Pfeiffer) who threatens her bond with Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning). The first film was a billion dollar hit, but will have to offer a lot more than Jolie’s fabulous costume to repeat that feat.

ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP 18th October

Ten years after the hit action comedy, we rejoin the hilariously grouchy family of survivors (Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin) as they continue to navigate the post-apocalyptic frontier of America, killing many zombies along the way. The first film had laughs, gore, and one of the best cameos ever. This time the cast are joined by newcomers Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch and Luke Wilson as fellow survivors they meet along the way. While delayed comedy sequels are rarely successful (looking at you, Zoolander 2), retaining the incredibly talented cast should ensure that there’s plenty of fun ahead.

Wine tasting

IN BEAUNE Words by Tonia Buxton

My wonderful husband finally got himself organised and arranged for a trip away for us, I’m the one that normally does all of that so I was surprised and thrilled when he told me he had done it. He organised a tour of the Burgundy wine region, where the world’s most expensive wines come from, and just happen to be his favourite too Pinot Noir, mines a full bodied Malbec, but don’t tell the French. We arrived at the beautiful Hostellerie Le Cèdre, set in stunning grounds, and of course the first thing we did was have a glass of wine. The hotel is walking distance from the centre of the pretty and quaint town so we decided to go for a walk, there were lots of lovely shops but without a doubt my favourite was the Frommagery, full of local cheese, olive oils and spices. On the hotel’s recommendation, we had lunch at Caves Madeleine. We had the ‘menu fix’ which is like a 3 course dish of the day, and is something I would advise everyone to do when in France, it normally means that you are getting something freshly prepared, using seasonal ingredients from the region. It was lovely, rustic and full of locals which is always the best place to eat.

TRAVEL

We then walked to the first of our wine tastings, it was at Joseph Drouhin, a large winery set right in the middle of town. If you are there it is worth a visit and they have a wonderful cellar, but I prefer the smaller family run wineries. The next day we met Simon from Heritour Voyage (@heritourvoyagefr) and he is what made our holiday so special, he was our very own driver and guide, through his contacts we met and visited some of the most wonderful wineries and vineyards of the region over our two day stay. He is a complete historian with in-depth knowledge about the history, terrain, culture and gossip, that surround this amazing wine region. We learnt that 25 of the 33 Grand Cru vineyards of the region were there in front of our eyes on a strip of land that was 1.5km wide and 10 km long. We visited Morey-Saint-Denis, where Salma Hayek’s husband bought a small vineyard/winery for 300 million euros!! These wines are highly sought and you really have to develop a great pallet and nose to be able to differentiate between a Regional (the cheapest), Commune, Single vineyard, Premier Cru and Grand Cru, as the grapes for them are all grown on the same patch of land, just a bit lower or higher than the other. We did a lot of swilling, aerating and tasting, still not sure I quite have what it takes to be a sommelier, but I had fun learning.

We did a lot of swilling, aerating and tasting, still not sure I quite have what it takes to be a sommelier, but I had fun learning. Whilst in Beaune we were lucky enough to meet some amazing wine producers, I loved all their stories, some family run, handed down and evolving through the generations like Domaine Captain-Gagnerot (@capitaingagnerot) and some that were spiritually called to the land like Pascal Marchand, the Rock star/ poet of winemaking at Marchand-Tawse (@marchand_tawse) a film has been made about his journey called Grand Cru. We also got to eat and drink some wonderful food and wines, I loved that a sommelier would wine match my dishes, only problem with that is if we were having a 4 course meal, that was 4 glasses of wine too! Some of my favourites were, lunch at La Rôtisserie Du Chambertin which also has a Michelin starred restaurant attached. I just loved Le Bistro Du Bord De L’eau at Hostellerie de Levernois, which I will one day go back and stay there, as the grounds are just so stunning. I had the best liver salad at Ma Cuisine, a little bistro in town. We did also visit some classic style very formal restaurants like Loiseau des Vignes, which serve nouvelle cuisine but I prefer the more authentic experience and food. Of course you can’t visit all these wonderful vineyards and not buy wine, though I know I need to develop some patience as some of the wines we bought need 5-10 years to mature, thankfully we also purchased some ready to drink now. www.toniabuxton.co.uk @toniabuxton

Trust in an Employee Misplaced? THE LAW WILL HELP YOU PICK UP THE PIECES – Some thoughts from Employment Law expert Richard Stephens

In spite of the obvious risks involved, a great many businesses have no choice but to entrust confidential information to their employees. A High Court case showed that, where such trust turns out to be misplaced, judges have a range of powers to deal appropriately with wrongdoers and limit any damage caused (Quantum Tuning Limited v White). A company suspected that one of its employees had covertly misappropriated a large number of its confidential electronic files with a view to setting up a competing business. After he was suspended on full pay, the company launched legal proceedings against him, alleging fraud, breach of contract and wrongful interference with goods. A judge issued an injunction against him, requiring him to, amongst other things, deliver up all computer and electronic equipment in his possession on which he could have secreted the files. That action was eventually settled after he apologised and purported to comply with the order in full by delivering up various computers and memory sticks. The company, however, subsequently formed the view that it had been deceived and launched further proceedings against him. Analysis of digital footprints indicated that he had retained certain computers which should have been delivered up. A judge set the settlement aside and granted a further injunction in similar terms to the first. The company later applied to have the employee committed to prison for contempt of court on the basis that that order too had been disobeyed.

In upholding that application, the Court found that the employee had attempted to conceal his continued possession of certain laptop computers and, to that end, had lied to the company and the Court. His explanation that one of the computers had been damaged beyond repair when it fell in a puddle was condemned as a far-fetched invention. The Court resolved to hear further argument before deciding what sanction to impose on the employee for his contempt, the maximum penalty for which is two years’ imprisonment or an unlimited fine. He also faces a financial claim in respect of any loss or damage caused to the company and his assets have been frozen up to a value of £50,000.
