Clone TV: While I was doing some research on you I noticed that Schreiber, your last name, is the German word for Writer. Is this just a fun coincidence or do you think you were meant to be a writer?

Just a coincidence, but it is kind of funny, isn't it?

Clone TV: And about Star Wars, have you always been a fan? What memories do you have of your first contact with the Star Wars universe?

Well, I'm 42, which is pretty old, so I saw the first Star Wars movie in 1977 when I was seven years old. I remember arriving late to the theater with my parents and entering to see Vader towering in a doorway filled with blaster smoke. I was terrified and enthralled at the same time.

Clone TV: Death Troopers was your first book for Star Wars. How did the opportunity to write it appeared?

I had written several horror novels for Random House/Del Rey Books, who also publish the Star Wars Expanded Universe novels. There was some in-house discussion about

ENTREVISTA CLONE TV - JOE SCHREIBER doing a zombie Star Wars novel, and my name came up as someone who might do a good job. They called my agent and my agent called me, and I said yes.

Clone TV: Were you ever afraid that the concept of zombies mixed with Star Wars, with all the gore that it usually takes, wouldn’t be well accepted by the fans or even by LucasFilms?

Since the idea came from Random House, and was vetted by Lucas, I wasn't particularly worried about pleasing the powers that be. As a fan myself, I thought it would be cool and a lot of fun, and as long as I could manage to entertain myself, I thought the book would go along fine. Gore has never been all that important to me, but since it was a zombie novel, I felt obligated to put in a certain amount of the red stuff, and it didn't seem too out of place, weirdly.

Clone TV: Death Troopers was a big hit: it was a New York Times Bestseller and appears in almost every list of “Must Read Star Wars Novels”. In 2010 “Red Harvest”, also written by you, came out. Did you feel some extra pressure due to the success of Death Troopers?

ENTREVISTA CLONE TV - JOE SCHREIBER Not really. When I write, the pressure is all internal -- it all comes from me. Until I figure out how to crack the story and make it work for me, I tend to be a very difficult person to live with...you can ask my wife. Once I get all that worked out, I relax into the story and everything's just fine. I've never felt any pressure from anyone else when it comes to the book.

Clone TV: Star Wars has always been a source of innumerous fan fiction. Dou you have any advices to give to anyone who might want to take their skills to a new level?

Not only to write about SW, but any other kind of stories.

I suggest that you write what you enjoy, read everything you can get your hands on, and press on in spite of any and all inevitable rejection. So much of successful writing is just refusing to quit, so it helps if you love the process.

Clone TV: About zombies, when it comes to the living dead, who or what are your main influences?

I enjoyed the original Night of the Living Dead, as well as 28 Days Later. I also like Fulci's Zombi 2, the one where the zombie fights the shark.

Clone TV: As a zombie fiction fan myself, I have to ask you this: do you think that a zombie outbreak will ever happen? If it does, do you have any plans about it?

Given enough time, I'm sure that a zombie outbreak is inevitable. If so, I'll probably one of the first ones to be eaten, though I don't know how I'll taste.

ENTREVISTA CLONE TV - JOE SCHREIBER Clone TV: What will you do next? Any plans for a new Star Wars book or will you focus on some other stories for now?

I would like to write another Star Wars book -- we'll see if I get that opportunity.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty busy with non-Star Wars novels. I have two of those coming out in the next year or so.

Clone TV: Any last words to those who are following us at Clone TV and never read any of your books?

I loved having the opportunity to write in the Lucasfilm/Star Wars universe, and I just want to say that I'm very grateful to everyone who's ever picked up a copy of my books. If they helped you pass some time on a long flight or an afternoon on the beach, then I've succeeded.
