We believe that happiness is truly feeling at home. Knowing a product is produced sustainably makes you enjoy it even more.

This is why we set high standards for the quality of our range and always aim for long lasting relationships.

This is how we delight people worldwide with beautiful products for a cosy home.

Nostalgia:

A

warm feeling of home

Certain scents, tastes or images instantly take you back in time. The aroma of fresh coffee in grandma’s kitchen, endless summer days spent in the garden when time seemed to stand still, or the moment you first decorated a house and it truly became your home. In this edition of the Bunzlau Castle magazine, we celebrate that feeling: nostalgia.

We explore how people experience 'home'. TV chef Sharon de Miranda takes you into her culinary world, where family recipes rooted in her heritage blend seamlessly with a contemporary twist. She demonstrates how the warmth of the past can be brought to life in today’s dishes. We also dive into the power of herbs. Madeleen, a herbalist at Het Blauwe Huis, explains how herbs can serve as sources of strength in everyday life,

just as they did in the past. Furthermore, we continue our journey to Sweden, where Patrick and Caroline have created a new home after emigrating. They built an extraordinary tipi village in the heart of nature. They share their story and reveal why this is a place you simply must visit. We also take a look inside the home of Marije Knevel and her partner Jelle, who embarked on the renovation project of their lives. They transformed their Amsterdam home into a colourful, inviting space meant to be truly lived in. And we speak with Lydia from the USA, who shares insights about mindful living through her Instagram page.

Also in our newest collection, we continue to seek a balance between old and new. We introduce seven unique designs, each telling its own story. Romantic floral motifs evoke memories of blooming summer gardens. The new heart pattern radiates warmth, playfulness, and love. For those who enjoy surprises, there's a graphic design that's fresh and modern, yet with familiar elements

of our trusted style. Alongside these new patterns, we are expanding our collection with kitchen textiles in beautiful colours and designs, sustainable, stylish, and perfect for adding warmth to your kitchen.

For us personally, nostalgia means warmth and connection. It lies in the small things, the details we consciously choose to cherish. Like gathering around the table, where a beautifully set table and a homemade meal brings the ultimate sense of coming home. By carefully selecting details like an beautiful tablecloth or fresh flowers from the garden, we create precious moments with our loved ones, moments that become treasured memories. It’s exactly this feeling we wish to bring to life in this edition.

We hope this magazine inspires you to reflect on your own memories, traditions, and moments of calm. Perhaps you'll recognise something in the stories of others or discover a piece of tableware that reminds you of the days gone by. Nostalgia is not just about looking back; it’s also about cherishing the present: the people around you, the traditions you create, and the atmosphere you cultivate in your home. Because ultimately, this is what makes 'home' truly special. Discover surprising recipes, explore our newest collection, and find tips to create your own warm and welcoming home. Pour yourself a cup of tea, leaf through slowly, and uncover all the beauty Bunzlau Castle has to offer.

Inside the Amsterdam home of Marije & Jelle

Marije Knevel already demonstrated her creative talents as the former editor-in-chief of Vogue.nl and LINDA.nl. Combining this creativity with a healthy dose of courage, she and her partner Jelle decided to undertake the renovation of a lifetime. They transformed their Amsterdam home into a vibrant, warm family space designed to be genuinely lived in.

From rental to dream home

What started as a rental house evolved into an extensive renovation project. Jelle, who now uses his skills as a contractor, planned the entire project himself. “A renovation on this scale is complex. Lots of preparation, drawings, Excel sheets, conversations… and arguments,” he adds with a laugh. “Fortunately, we always managed to reconnect. It was actually excellent relationship therapy.”

Marije nods in agreement: “Jelle has the technical insight, I don’t at all. He made the drawings, and I ensured we kept laughing together. And hey, we made it! And we’re still happily together.”

Doing the renovation together? “Yes, secretly, that was the best part,” Marije admits. “We put up walls, did caulking, sanding… basically everything. I'd almost forgotten how much we did ourselves.”

The biggest challenge? “Realising that you'll eventually come out on the other side.

At a certain point during the renovation, the dust gets so bad you start to forget there were ever walls to begin with.” But now that we live here, I'd do it again in a heartbeat,” says Marije. Jelle adds: “For me, the main challenge was keeping everything and everyone moving forward. But gradually, something emerged that truly fits us. You see our personalities throughout the entire house. It genuinely feels like ours now.”

Both have since found their favourite spots. For Jelle, it’s undoubtedly the kitchen. “Between the island and the stove, right in the middle of the kitchen. Stirring pans, pouring a glass of wine, pottering around. Lovely.”

Marije’s heart belongs to the cosy corner at the centre of the house, where she starts each day with a cup of coffee. “Whether I'm working, reading or doing nothing, that’s my favourite place to be.”

Atmosphere, character, and a touch of chaos Marije and Jelle’s interior is anything but standard. “We didn’t want our home to look like a showroom,

but a place full of life. Warm, cosy, timeless, with room for a little chaos.”

Their style? Marije describes it herself: “Colourful and cosy. Think of a bright pink toilet (Jelle is colour blind, which might be lucky for me), pomegranate wallpaper with monkeys in the hallway, and surprises around every corner. That makes us happy, not restless. A white, sleek house? That’s definitely not us.”

Making decisions about colours, materials, and wallpaper was surprisingly harmonious. “We both had clear ideas but always found a middle ground. We wanted warmth reflected in colours and materials, and this became the foundation of our interior.”

Their tableware is also an essential part of their home’s atmosphere. “The role of Bunzlau Castle in our interior is indispensable,” says Jelle. “Not hidden behind cupboard doors but proudly displayed: in the kitchen, office, coffee corner… everywhere.”

Marije adds: “We even have a shelf above the kitchen counter that we regularly change. For us, those mugs and bowls aren’t just functional but real eye-catchers. They add warmth, colour, and personality.”

Bunzlau Castle: the common thread at home Jelle was in his early twenties when he first discovered Bunzlau Castle through a friend's mother. “I fell in love

instantly,” he recalls. “With the designs, but also the shapes. They're timeless and continue to appeal to me every time.” Marije also vividly remembers her first encounter: “I was fourteen and saw the Farmer Mugs at a friend's house. During my student years, I began collecting them mug by mug.” By now, they have both been enthusiastic collectors for years. “When we moved in together, we merged our collections,” says Marije.

Each piece has its own story. “I remember exactly who gave us what,” says Marije. “Jelle less so, but then I do have an extraordinary memory.” Some designs immediately take her back to specific periods in her life. Jelle describes his connection to Bunzlau Castle differently: “It's mainly a feeling. It makes me think of a table filled with lovely people, good food, and laughter. That's what it evokes for me.”

What makes the tableware so appealing? “The craftsmanship, the fact that it's hand-stamped,” says Marije. “Every piece is unique.” And their favourites? Jelle: “The 200 ml tumbler. Nice and sturdy in your hand, perfect for a strong coffee.” Marije: “For me, it's the large Farmer Mug that can hold half a litre of tea. And I love all the different bowls; mixing and matching adds warmth.”

In short, Bunzlau Castle is more than just tableware to us. It represents memories, atmosphere, and a sense of home.

At home in Sweden

The story of Förland

For Patrick, Caroline and their children, their new life in Sweden is an adventure full of change and connection. In August 2022, they swapped their lives in the Netherlands for the peaceful village of Sunnemo, where they are now realising their dream together: the tipi village Förland. Here, surrounded by Sweden’s expansive nature, they have created a place where guests can escape the bustle of daily life and reconnect with each other, nature, and the simplicity Sweden has to offer.

@forland_sunnemo

A new beginning

The decision to move to Sweden wasn’t easy, but for the family, it felt like a step they had to take together. "We wanted to do something different for years, and after several holidays in Sweden, the right moment finally arrived," Caroline says. "It was now or never, especially given the children's ages." The transition wasn’t without its challenges, but the natural surroundings and peaceful landscape helped the family quickly feel at home.

For Patrick, it was love at first sight. "I immediately felt right at home," he says. However, Caroline and the children experienced some difficult moments, especially saying goodbye to family and friends and adapting to a new culture and language. Slowly becoming accustomed to their beautifully renovated home, the animals on site, and building initial connections in the neighbourhood, they found their way. "At first it was a process of small steps, but now it increasingly feels like home," says Caroline.

A growing dream

The idea for Förland emerged during a skiing trip when the family saw a tipi in Sunnemo. From there, their plan to create their own tipi village took shape. What began with one large tipi has now expanded to five, accommodating a total of 20 beds. "The tipis blend perfectly into the landscape, and we selected and purchased them locally with great care," Caroline says. "We wanted to create a place where people can rest and enjoy nature."

For the family, Förland is more than just a place to stay; it’s a way of life. "The connection to nature, simplicity, and harmony is what we want to pass on to our guests," Patrick explains. Guests can experience the tranquillity of the surroundings, swim in the refreshing lake, or enjoy cosy evenings around the inviting campfire.

Craftsmanship and sustainability

What makes Förland unique is not just its location, but also the craftsmanship involved. Patrick, skilled in woodworking, has completed numerous projects, from building a greenhouse for the vegetable garden to constructing a new sauna. "We use as many local and recycled materials as possible, from old window frames to wood we process ourselves," he explains. "It’s wonderful to see everything come together, blending new and reclaimed materials."

Sustainability plays a significant role for the family, though it is a process of continuous improvement. They use water sparingly, sort their waste, and utilise Sweden’s popular second-hand shops, known as 'Loppis'. "We hope to keep learning from Swedish culture and their approach to sustainability," Caroline adds.

A place for community

Förland is all about community. "We wanted to create a small-scale retreat where people have space for solitude but can also connect with others," Caroline says.

"The connection to nature, simplicity, and harmony is what we want to pass on to our guests,"
"It’s wonderful to see people chatting and enjoying evenings around the campfire,"

The communal kitchen is an important gathering place where guests can cook, eat, and spend time together. "It’s wonderful to see people chatting and enjoying evenings around the campfire," she adds.

Completely unplugging at Förland

For those seeking serenity, fresh air, and simplicity, Förland is the ultimate escape. Here, your day begins with birdsong, coffee brewed on a woodfired stove, and stunning lake views. Then, embark on a hiking trail with a backpack full of treats, marvelling at wild waterfalls and perhaps even a surprise encounter with a moose.

After a day outdoors, nothing beats relaxing in the warmth of the sauna or hot tub, followed by dinner at a beautifully set table and a comfortable bed awaiting you. At Förland, you’re welcome exactly as you are.

Bunzlau Castle

At Förland, every meal is a cherished moment. Beautifully set tables, cooking together, and enjoying each other's company create the warm, homely atmosphere the family strives for.

The colourful Bunzlau Castle crockery, selected with love and care, sets the stage for meaningful encounters. Guests are welcomed with a steaming pot of tea and a tray of cheerful cups, preferably adorned with hearts. "Guests often remark, ‘But this is far too beautiful to use!’" Caroline laughs.

That’s precisely the intention: to make you feel at home at Förland. The tableware reinforces this, transforming every meal into a celebration, a memory to take home.

Pride and future

The family takes pride in what they have achieved at Förland. "It was a big step, but one we wouldn’t have wanted to miss," Caroline says. "We hope our children will look back on this adventure with as much pride as we already feel." Their dream is for Förland to continue growing, welcoming more guests while enjoying the outdoors and new adventures.

The Bunzlau Castle x Van Gogh Museum collection has grown to become a cherished part of our range. This special line brings together the craftsmanship of Bunzlau Castle with the world-renowned art of Vincent van Gogh. We are proud to continue this collaboration.

Wall Plate Ø 32 cm

A shared love of craftsmanship

The partnership with the Van Gogh Museum is founded on shared values. Both the museum and Bunzlau Castle stand for quality, creativity, and a deep appreciation of craftsmanship. Van Gogh’s paintings served as inspiration for designs that are recognisable, yet never directly copied. We translate Van Gogh’s brushstrokes into lines, patterns and colour accents that complement our ceramics. These patterns are applied by hand, stamp by stamp. In our Unikat designs, certain flowers are even painted by hand, making each item truly unique and precious.

Art for every day

The designs are based on works found in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Each one is iconic from the strength of the irises to the gratitude of the sunflower. By transforming Van Gogh’s paintings into tableware and accessories, we’ve created a collection that is not only practical in everyday use, but also visually inspiring. Every item tells the story of a world-famous artwork, which can now be experienced daily.

Owning a piece from this collection means owning more than just a plate, bowl, or mug. You bring a touch of art into your home, a conversation at the table, a memory of beauty. This collection shows that art does not to remain distant; it can find a place in everyday life.

A collection with a story

The Bunzlau Castle x Van Gogh Museum collection consists of five designs, each inspired by some of Van Gogh’s most iconic works. Every painting is recognisable, yet reinterpreted in a way that fits the DNA of Bunzlau Castle. The designs appear on a wide variety of products, from mugs, plates, bowls, and teapots to vases, soap dispensers, and magnets.

A collection that not only looks beautiful on the table but also makes for a wonderful gift, for a loved one, a collector, or anyone with an eye for art and atmosphere. Each piece is something special: inspired by Van Gogh, translated by Bunzlau Castle, and a joy to give and receive, every day.

Irises

The stunning purple irises symbolize wisdom and strength. However, due to the fading of the original painting, the irises have now turned blue. In the decor, we have combined blue and purple for a playful effect.

Sunflowers

Who hasn’t heard of it? Sunflowers is one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings. For him, sunflowers symbolized gratitude. He therefore included these bright yellow flowers in several of his paintings.

Old Vineyard with Peasant Woman is one of Van Gogh's last paintings and was the inspiration for a setting with infinitely curled vines. The wavy lines often make an appearance in later paintings.

Vincent's Flowers

For its anniversary, the Van Gogh Museum has developed a unique and new design inspired by seven different flower paintings by Van Gogh. The rich colours and detailed flowers are the inspiration for an extraordinary décor in which an additional painting technique is applied, making it even more unique!

Almond Blossom

Van Gogh immensely enjoyed large blossom branches against a blue sky. His painting Almond Blossom was a gift for the birth of his nephew, who was named after Vincent. For the Van Gogh family, this painting has remained the most treasured work.

At home in textiles

At Bunzlau Castle, you’ll find sustainability in everything we create. Not only in our tableware, but also in our textiles, you can feel the craftsmanship and the attention to detail textiles to tablecloths, and from oven gloves to plaids: every piece is carefully designed a warm, atmospheric touch to your home.

Crafted with care and sustainability

Our textiles are produced with expertise and care in Portugal, a country with a centuries-old tradition of textile craftsmanship. We deliberately choose organic materials, such as 100% cotton free from harmful substances or chemicals. All of our textiles are GOTScertified, meaning the entire production process, from plantation to finished product is independently inspected.

But for us, sustainability is also in the details. Fabric remnants from cutting tea towels and kitchen cloths are reused to make pot holders and oven gloves. Many of the factories run on solar energy and are equipped with wastewater purification systems. Even our office and warehouse in Nijkerk are fully energy-neutral. The result: textiles that not only feel good, but are also good for people, the environment and the future.

Colourful classics

Our kitchen textiles are more than just practical, they truly bring atmosphere into your home! With more than 94 different sets, you’ll always find a design to suit your kitchen and personal style. Whether you choose floral patterns, geometric designs or playful animal motifs, each one adds instant charm to your space. Switch things up with the seasons or coordinate with your tableware. Even hanging out the laundry becomes a joyful occasion.

Organic Home textiles: pure nature indoors

Especially for those who love peace and natural materials, we’ve developed our Organic Home Textiles line (p.140). This collection is made from 100% organic cotton, featuring a soft colour palette and an extra fine weave. Perfect for anyone who appreciates a serene, sustainable look in the kitchen, at the table, and in the living room.

Your home, your style

We believe every home is unique and deserves its own personal atmosphere. Our wide range of textile products is designed to reflect your individual style and help you create a warm, welcoming space. With respect for people and the planet, and with a focus on quality and detail. So you can enjoy beautiful textiles every day, each with a story worth telling.

Tea Towel Daydream

Bas and Francis have been using Bunzlau Castle kitchen textiles with love for nine years. “I still remember receiving my first tea towel and kitchen cloth set from my mother-in-law,” says Francis. “Since then, I’ve started collecting all sorts of colours and patterns. The quality is excellent, sturdy, and they dry so well that I wouldn’t use anything else. And that very first set? I still use it today!”

The power of simplicity

Although Washington, D.C. is known for its constant bustle and virtually non-existent work–life balance, Lydia is determined to show that you can carve out a peaceful life for yourself anywhere. As a graphic designer and the woman behind the Instagram account @bloom_and_build_, she reminds her one hundred thousand followers to seek out beauty in the everyday. Not rushed, but room for tranquillity, beauty and meaning. With a steaming cup of coffee, homemade bread baking in the oven and a good book laid out on the table, Lydia adopts a rhythm that suits her and encourages others to do likewise.

“I don’t see myself as a minimalist, but I do try to live with moderation. Sometimes, simply asking yourself why you want something is enough.” Lydia’s life isn’t about collecting as much as possible, but about making choices that truly make sense. In this interview, she shares how she learned to choose with intention.

Choosing consciously

Lydia’s journey toward intentional living began at an unexpected moment. Each time she closed her social media apps, the feeling lingered that sense that something was still missing. As if one more purchase might finally make life feel complete. But that sense of fulfillment never came. What remained was the question: What truly brings me peace?

The answer was not in collecting more, but appreciating what was already there. These days, Lydia chooses with care for things that are functional and beautiful, that last, and enrich her daily life.“That’s exactly where sustainable quality fits in. Not more, but better. No impulse purchase, but conscious love for what you choose.”

For Lydia, satisfaction lies in making everyday items herself: from granola and face oil to homemade laundry detergent. Still, for her, living consciously does not mean you’re not allowed to buy things. On the contrary. It’s about choosing what you truly value, what suits who you are, and what you use with joy. A soft cashmere sweater that lasts for years, a good bed, or a dish that adds something special to daily life. Lovingly chosen, and cherished all the more.

A table with intention

Lydia finds joy in moments shared around the table, surrounded by good food and kind people. Her lifestyle is reflected there as well. To her, hospitality is not about perfection, but about feeling. A table does not have to be elaborately styled to radiate warmth. “With a simple but thoughtful table setting, you show your guests they are valued.”

That philosophy aligns perfectly with what Bunzlau Castle stands for. Our products are made to be used, not to sit on a shelf. They make everyday moments special, shape memories, and bring generations together.

Bunzlau Castle

Lydia’s love for Bunzlau Castle is rooted in her heritage.

"It’s about choosing what you truly value, what suits who you are, and what you use with joy."

“My mother is half Polish and encouraged her daughters to build their own tableware collections. For me, it had to be Polish pottery. Blue, sturdy, and something that tells a story about who I am.”

Her favorite item is the 370 ml Farmer Mugs, which she uses every day. “The shape fits perfectly in my hand and keeps my drinks warm a little longer. Which is helpful, because I often forget to drink while I’m working.” She feels most drawn to patterns that tell a story, like Sunflowers and Irises from the Van Gogh Museum collection. “Van Gogh’s art and letters move me deeply, that’s what makes this collection so special. And as my Instagram name suggests, I love flowers, so ‘English Rose’ is another favorite.”

The values of Bunzlau Castle align seamlessly with her lifestyle. “I love the dedication to craftsmanship. A lot of my content is about slowing down and appreciating beauty, and I see that reflected in the process of handmade ceramics.”

Our fans about their favourite products

Your unique Bunzlau Castle collection says something about who you are and what you love. There is no one with the same items as you, which is what makes your collection so special. In "My Bunzlau Castle", our fans talk about their passion for tableware.

Mother and daughter Marlies and Melissa not only share life’s ups and downs, but also a great love for Bunzlau Castle tableware. They both adore cooking and are passionate about expanding their collection. Melissa’s journey started over ten years ago when she first spotted the iconic Farmer Mugs at her cousin’s house. “I instantly fell in love and decided I simply had to start collecting them too.” Eventually, Marlies couldn’t resist the charm of the playful shapes and vibrant décors: “We were ready for a new dinner set at home. Something of good quality that would last. When my husband pointed out that we should just go for Bunzlau Castle, we decided to replace all of it in one go! I now have everything I need for daily use, but always seem to find something new to add to my wishlist.”

“The table is always set so beautifully, and it creates such a warm atmosphere...”

Melissa & Marlies (daughter and mother), number of items: 188

Where many families go all-out for Christmas dinner, this is actually a weekly tradition in Marlies’s home. All five children gather around the table, beautifully set with their favourite tableware. “Mum is a fantastic cook, and when everything is presented so nicely, it truly feels like a celebration,” says Melissa. “The table is always set so beautifully, and it creates such a warm and cosy atmosphere with everyone together.”

For Marlies and Melissa, Bunzlau Castle is far more than just tableware. Their collection has become part of the family story, woven into shared memories of togetherness, a love of cooking, and a table full of stories.

“Sometimes I give someone a piece as a gift, and they can hardly believe it’s dishwasher safe…”

Cooking, pottering around in the garden… Bunzlau Castle fan Arjan has many hobbies, but one passion stands out above the rest: tableware.

“I’ll admit it, I’m completely obsessed with crockery,” he says with a smile. The Tulip Royal design stole his heart years ago. “I love the whole mix & match concept of Bunzlau Castle, but as soon as I see something with little tulips, I just have to take it home.”

His wife Tessa, however, has quite different tastes. “She prefers more subtle designs,” Arjan explains. “But in the end, our mix of styles actually results in a colourful and unique collection in our cupboard.”

So what makes him so enthusiastic about Bunzlau Castle? It’s all in the combination of design

and quality. “The tulips always win me over, but the quality of the tableware is also exceptional. Sometimes I give someone a piece as a gift, and they can hardly believe it’s dishwasher safe. They think it’s far too pretty. But it really is! Perfect for everyday use.”

His favourites? “Without a doubt the different bowls and Farmer Mugs. They’re constantly on the table at our house. The 240 ml Farmer Mugs are just perfect for a good cup of coffee, not too big, not too small. And I use the bowls for everything: a handful of nuts with drinks, biscuits with coffee, dessert after dinner… everything looks instantly festive.”

In the heart of Turnhout, Belgium, Caroline Verdick has been running her cookshop Kooktijd for 15 years, a dream come true for cooking enthusiasts, with a wide range of Bunzlau Castle on offer.

“Our customers can literally walk among the prints,” Caroline says. She herself has been a devoted fan and everyday user of the tableware for years.

“In our home, Bunzlau Castle is used every single day. From breakfast to dinner: everything can go in the dishwasher, the microwave and even the oven.

Even when I take my lunch to the shop by bike, it’s always packed in a Bunzlau Castle bowl. And believe it or not, nothing has ever broken en route.”

Her love for the brand began in a small coffee house in Turnhout, where she first discovered the tableware.“What immediately appealed to me back

then was the huge variety of patterns and the excellent quality.”

Her family and team share the passion too.

“My mother is collecting as well, my colleagues use it at home, and visitors to the shop are always excited.” Her most-used item? That one’s easy.

“The 1250 ml serving bowl is absolutely essential for me. Salads, pastas, nachos... straight from the oven to the table.” A daily favourite that adds a little something extra to every meal. Because for Caroline, Bunzlau Castle doesn’t just bring colour to her shop, it brings warmth to her home.

“What immediately appealed to me back then was the huge variety of patterns and the excellent quality.”

of herbs The power

From ancient wisdom to everyday tradition

Some things instantly evoke a warm sense of nostalgia. The scent of lavender, a steaming cup of chamomile tea, a sprig of rosemary crackling in the oven. For centuries, herbs have been interwoven with memories, traditions, and care. At the same time, they feel surprisingly contemporary. They fit perfectly into a conscious lifestyle that seeks a closer connection with nature. At 'Het Blauwe Huis', herbs are cultivated with dedication and expertise.

Madeleen is a herbalist. That means she studies the healing properties of plants. “When I began studying herbs, it completely changed the way I saw the world. I no longer saw weeds, but beautiful sources of strength. It’s a craft rooted in feeling, observing, and being in tune with nature. I love sharing knowledge about plants and their effects, so it becomes part of daily life once more.”

Where herbs and people grow together

'Het Blauwe Huis' is located in Ruinerwold, in the Dutch province of Drenthe. For nearly fifty years, biodynamic herbs have been grown here with care and craftsmanship. It’s a place where herbs are nurtured with love, but also in connection with people. Around thirty colleagues work on the farm, each with a different background. Some are building a fresh start, others are rediscovering their rhythm after a difficult time. It’s a place that offers space to catch your breath, find meaning, and grow together.

The herbs harvested here are 100% pure, coarsely cut, and blended with care.

“This preserves their scent, flavour, and active properties to the fullest,” Madeleen explains.

“Everything begins with the soil and the balance of nature. You can feel that in every herb.”

Herbs as a source of strength

Herbs are special. They often grow in the most unexpected places between paving stones, along ditches, or roadside verges and are bursting with power. Take nettle, for example. Often seen as a pesky weed, it’s actually a fantastic natural pick-meup. Or rosemary, Madeleen’s personal favourite.

“It supports digestion, boosts circulation, and helps you relax. At the same time, it sharpens the mind.

I use it in tea, in cooking, or as an oil on the skin.”

One of her favourite stories is about a friend’s daughter who used rosemary while studying for exams. “I told her that Roman students used to wear rosemary wreaths to enhance concentration. She loved the idea, so much so that she and her friends tied sprigs of rosemary to their pens during exams. An old tradition in a new guise.”

Living in rhythm with nature

Herbs have long been connected with the seasons, cycles, and traditions. And that rhythm is something we risk losing in modern life. “When the dandelions bloom, it’s time to cleanse the body,” says Madeleen. “In winter, roots are especially potent, and at nightfall, calming herbs are ideal. They help keep you in balance.”

At 'Het Blauwe Huis', you’ll see this rhythm reflected in the herbal tea blends. The seasonal teas made from herbs grown right here in Drenthe bring each time of year to life. Summer, autumn, winter or spring: every tea has its own colour, scent, and effect. And you can truly feel the difference.

Scent, colour, and conversation

Herbs are not only good for the body, they bring atmosphere too. They awaken the senses, create calm, and invite connection. A morning cup of tea, a comforting moment after a meal, or simply sitting down together to chat. Madeleen tells us about their ‘Good Evening’ tea, which helps the body relax while also creating space to share the day. “Sharing helps you process experience just like food, our experiences need to be ‘digested’ too. Sharing becomes a ritual in itself.”

The herbs from 'Het Blauwe Huis' pair beautifully with Bunzlau Castle’s tableware. “Our ‘Good Morning’ tea with pink rosebuds looks stunning in your deep blue ceramics. It turns any breakfast table into a celebration. Just as your tableware brings a seasonal feel to the home, our teas add a seasonal flavour. We also share a love for craftsmanship and a deep connection with nature. Where Bunzlau Castle finds inspiration in the shapes and colours of flowers, nature is quite literally the source of every product at Het Blauwe Huis.”

How to get started yourself

The beauty of herbs is that you can begin using them straight away. Add a drop of lavender oil to your evening routine. Sprinkle some cardamom on your porridge. Brew a pot of calming tea to ease into your evening. And if you’re feeling inspired, this magazine includes two lovely tea recipes for you to try at home.

Because herbs are not just healthy they’re also simple, beautiful, and full of meaning. A warm nod to the past, with all the vitality of the present.

Recipes

Using loose herbs, you can easily make your own herbal tea blends. Use 1–2 teaspoons per cup, steep for 8 to 10 minutes, and cover the cup to retain the scent and potency. These two blends from 'Het Blauwe Huis' are a great place to start.

Little moments of indulgence in your favourite mug

A small moment just for yourself. It’s those little pauses that matter most. Whether alone or together. Your hands wrapped around a warm mug and a touch of calm.

To give those moments a little something extra, I went in search of simple twists on the coffee and tea recipes we all know. Familiar, but with a small surprise. Something that makes it just a bit cosier, tastier, or more unexpected.

There are times when the day feels like it’s holding its breath. A quiet morning with rain tapping at the window. A sunny afternoon break. An evening when something warm simply feels right.

Crème brûlée coffee with caramel crumbs

How to make it:

Ingredients:

1 cup of espresso or strong coffee | frothed milk | vanilla syrup |

3 tablespoons caster sugar (for the hard caramel)

Place 3 tablespoons of caster sugar in a heavy-based saucepan. Optionally add 1–2 tablespoons of water to help the caramelisation process along gently. Heat the sugar over medium heat. Do not stir. You may carefully swirl or tilt the pan if the sugar is melting unevenly. Use a damp pastry brush to moisten the inside edge of the pan and prevent sugar crystals forming. Once the sugar has turned golden brown, pour the hot caramel onto a sheet of baking paper. Leave to harden completely. Break into pieces and grind finely using a food processor or pestle and mortar.

To make the coffee:

Brew your coffee and optionally add a dash of vanilla syrup. Pour over with warm, frothed milk in a Tulip Mug (200 ml). Sprinkle the milk foam with the fine caramel powder. Use a kitchen blowtorch to caramelise into a crisp topping.

Nostalgic spiced biscuit Coffee

Ingredients:

1 cup of lungo or filter coffee | 1 cup of frothed (plant-based) milk | ½ tsp speculaas spice mix | 1 tsp maple syrup or coconut blossom sugar

How to make it:

Brew a cup of lungo or filter coffee. Stir in the spice mix and sweetener. Add warm, frothed milk. Top with a generous swirl of whipped cream and crumbled speculaas biscuits. Serve this warming drink in a Farmer Mug.

How it feels:

Rustic and homely, with a creamy dollop nearly spilling over the rim. A nostalgic taste of days gone by.

Warm matcha latte with rose water & rose petals

Ingredients: 1 tsp matcha powder | 2 tbsp hot water | 1 cup oat milk | 1 tsp maple syrup | ½ tsp rose water | dried rose petals

How to make it:

Whisk the matcha powder thoroughly with the hot water to avoid lumps. Warm the oat milk and stir in the maple syrup and rose water. Gently pour in the matcha. Garnish with a pinch of dried rose petals. Serve in a 400 ml cappuccino mug.

How it feels:

Soft, earthy, and floral. The delicate scent of rose adds a refined touch.

At the table with Sharon de Miranda

Sitting down at Sharon’s table offers more than just a good meal. In her kitchen, cultures, customs and memories come together to create something that feels like coming home. “Sometimes I don’t cook a dish just because it tastes good, but because it reminds me of something, of the past, of someone, or of home. For me, cooking is a way to keep stories alive.”

Nostalgia with a modern twist

Sharon’s cooking style is as versatile as her background. “My kitchen is a blend of everything I am,” she says. “Dutch, Surinamese, Indonesian and living in Curaçao has also left its mark.” Her dishes reflect her roots: roti with yardlong beans, saoto soup, or traditional Dutch fare with a personal twist. “I cook by intuition. No complicated recipes, just tasting, smelling, and adjusting as I go. Some dishes I make exactly as my mother did, but I’m also not afraid to experiment.

Sometimes I’ll add an unexpected ingredient or give a classic dish a modern twist. That’s how cooking stays lively and creative for me.”

'BinnensteBuiten'

For over ten years, Sharon has been a familiar face on 'BinnensteBuiten' (a Dutch public broadcasting programme about cooking, nature and sustainable living), where she shares her passion for food with the audience. “This programme means a great deal to me,” she says proudly. “It’s about love for the product, for craftsmanship, and for genuine stories.

Mug Farmer 240 ml
"Tableware is like the canvas on which I paint my flavours and with Bunzlau Castle, it looks like a true work of art.”

That’s exactly how I view cooking.” While travelling around the country, she meets people who work with care and dedication farmers, gardeners, home cooks. “Everyone has their own vision, and that inspires me. There’s no ‘correct’ way to cook. What matters is attention and making conscious choices.”The story behind 'BinnensteBuiten' aligns seamlessly with her own approach to food: local, seasonal, and with respect for the maker. “It’s taught me that real cooking begins with truly observing nature, people and yourself.”

Memories on a plate

Many of Sharon’s dishes are deeply rooted in memory. “The smell of frying onion and garlic instantly takes me back to my childhood. At our house, you could smell it from the hallway.” Some recipes have become true family traditions. “Like saoto soup. Everyone had their own way of garnishing it at home: one person used lots of madame Jeanette chilli, another added extra egg or bean sprouts. It wasn’t just about the food it was about being together at the table. If I could pass on just one family recipe? My mother’s nasi with chicken. Not only because it’s unbelievably delicious, but also because it’s a dish that anyone can make.”

Tableware as a canvas

For Sharon, the dining table should feel just as personal. She’s a big fan of Bunzlau Castle tableware. “What appeals to me is the combination of craftsmanship and elegance. Each piece feels handmade, with love and attention. You can see that but more importantly, you can feel it. The patterns are timeless, yet playful. They bring character to your table without being loud or overbearing.” Her favourites? “The deep plates and the Farmer Mugs. The mugs feel so good in your hand perfect for a cup of tea while I’m cooking. And I use the deep plates for everything: stews, soups, curries. They really make a dish shine. Even after heavy use, they still look great. And believe me, in our home, tableware gets a lot of use!”

For Sharon, the experience is in the details. Not just what you taste, but also what you see completes the dish. “Because I cook with a lot of colour and texture, the visual aspect of food is really important to me. After all, we eat with our eyes too. A beautiful plate enhances the overall experience. Tableware is like the canvas on which I paint my flavours and with Bunzlau Castle, it looks like a true work of art.”

Discover Sharon’s nasi with chicken

To make the nasi (fried rice):

Ingredients nasi (fried rice):

• 500 g brown rice

• 200 g sweetcorn kernels

• 1 onion

• 2 cloves of garlic

• 1 bunch of celery leaves

• 5 tbsp ketjap manis (sweet soy sauce)

• olive oil

Ingredients chicken:

• 600 g chicken thighs

• 1 stalk of lemongrass (sereh)

• 10 g fresh ginger

• 2 bay leaves (salam)

• 1 red chilli

• 2 cloves of garlic

• 1 onion

• 1 tomato

• 2 tsp ground coriander

• 2 tsp ground cumin

• 2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder

• 2 allspice berries

• 1 stock cube

• 6 tbsp sweet ketjap olive oil

Rinse the rice until the water runs clear, then cook it according to the instructions on the packaging. Meanwhile, finely chop the onion and garlic. Heat a little oil in a wok and gently fry the onion and garlic until translucent. Add the cooked rice and stir-fry briefly. Mix in the sweet soy sauce (ketjap manis) and add the sweetcorn. Stir-fry everything until well combined. Finally, season the nasi with finely chopped celery leaves.

To make the chicken:

Cut the chicken thighs into pieces of around 3 cm. Finely chop the onion and garlic, dice the tomato, and slice the red chilli. Grate the ginger. Heat some oil in a pan and gently fry the onion and garlic until soft and translucent. Add the tomato and grated ginger, stirring well. Then add the chicken pieces along with the ground cumin, ground coriander and Chinese five-spice, and cook for about a minute. Pour in the ketjap manis and add enough water to just cover the chicken. Add the stock cube, allspice berries, bay leaves (salam), and lemongrass (sereh). Let it simmer until most of the liquid has reduced. Serve the dish with slices of cucumber and red onion.

The story behind Bunzlau Castle

At Bunzlau Castle, everything revolves around craftsmanship, authenticity, and timeless beauty. Every piece of tableware you hold is a symbol of tradition, paired with a contemporary vision. But what exactly makes the story behind this tableware so special? Let us take you through the unique creation process of our stunning Polish ceramics.

Authentic production process

Bunzlau Castle tableware is entirely handmade. The process begins with clay, which is left to dry in pre-formed moulds. Once the clay has sufficiently hardened, the moulds are removed and any imperfections are carefully smoothed. After several hours of air drying, the signature blue rim is applied, and the tableware is placed in the kiln for the first firing.

At this stage, the clay is biscuit-fired, making it ready for decoration. Using sponges, the unique patterns are stamped by hand, with fine details added using a brush. This authentic technique ensures that each piece has its own character no two items are ever exactly the same. Once the patterns are complete, the tableware is glazed and fired again at a staggering 1250 degrees Celsius. This high firing temperature makes the ceramics durable and perfectly suited for everyday use.

Exceptionally strong and long-lasting

Anyone who uses our tableware daily knows it is not only beautiful, but also remarkably strong. That strength is the result of expert craftsmanship, premium materials, and a meticulous production process. Our ceramics are fired at high temperatures and made from robust types of clay. The result is exceptionally strong tableware, safe for the dishwasher, oven, and microwave. Bunzlau Castle pieces are designed to last a lifetime.

Mixing and matching collections

Our current collection includes over forty different designs, each carefully hand-stamped with the utmost attention to detail. Whether you prefer cheerful floral motifs or graphic prints, there's always a design that suits your style. Thanks to the iconic blue rim, all patterns complement one another beautifully, making it easy to combine old favourites with new additions. The result is your own personal and sustainable collection, built up over the years.

A warm welcome

Bunzlau Castle helps you create that warm feeling of home. The tableware you choose mugs, plates, bowls, says something about who you are. Our wide range allows you to shape the atmosphere in your home entirely to your own taste. Your patterns, your colours, your combinations. All of the highest quality, because your home deserves nothing but the very best.

A sustainable choice; for now and later

We believe that, when you know a product is made in a fair way, you enjoy it more. At Bunzlau Castle, sustainability is one of the most important core values. For us, an important part of sustainability is our choice of materials, but we find it equally important to make the right choice regarding production, people and transport. By making sustainable choices, we can truly make a difference. For now and later.

Materials

High product quality is essential to us, as it ensures long-lasting performance. Our choice of materials plays an important role in this. We always aim to make realistic choices. For us, it is important that the products are suitable for daily use as well as for special occasions, without compromising on quality. After all, a product that lasts for years is also more sustainable.

Bunzlau Castle tableware is made from raw materials from the factory's surroundings. As many as seven different types of clay are used. The paint used on the ceramics is made from natural materials as well. The different collections mix and match perfectly, making them less susceptible to trends. This way, you can collect the tableware for life.

For our kitchen, table and home textiles, material choice is incredibly important. For this, we consciously choose to produce within Europe. The cotton we use is 100% organic, without any harmful substances and chemicals.

To give you more certainty and clarity as a consumer, all of our products have official GOTS certification. This means that an independent party has audited the entire chain, from plantation to wholesale.

Production

Our production is done with great care. Every detail has been thought through, and you can see and feel that. All the remnants created during the production process are reused. Kitchen cloth fabric is made into oven mitts and potholders.

Our factories have their own wastewater treatment plant and many of the spinning factories run entirely on solar energy. Our warehouse in Nijkerk is also gas-free and runs on solar energy.

People

Before our product reaches your home, many people have worked on it with great love and care. We visit our factories regularly to keep on top of proper working conditions. Wages and working conditions throughout the chain are good, safe and verified by independent parties. That feels good!

Transport

Because all our products are produced in Europe, they do not have to travel a long way to the Netherlands. With our warehouse centrally located in the Netherlands, we can supply our sellers quickly. We ship our parcels with DHL. They offset their carbon emissions and guarantee a go green delivery.

This way, we consider the impact on both people and the environment throughout the entire process, from production and procurement to your doorstep.

You can find Bunzlau Castle retailers all over the world. Our retailers are located in various countries where you are more than welcome to find the right products that will complete your collection.
